Firefox added (modified?) this hover thingy to show to complete tab title. It's not the tab preview, I disabled that. I want to disable this hover thingy as well because it's fucking busted and occasionally if you hover over a tab and then scroll through the tabs the thingy will move out of the window and it just looks terrible and I don't fucking use it anyway.
How do I disable it?

Anyone know a good Windows mini PC?
It doesn't need to be anything too fancy, just enough to stream a webcam and browse the Internet at the same time
I have an old mini PC that I put Zorin on and that works great except for some driver issues with the webcam that causes the kernel to crash somehow
I would just install windows on there but the motherboard doesn't have a spot to install a TPM module so at most I'd get a year out of windows 10
I'm sure I sound like a boomer but I'm just not even sure where to start looking for a tiny PC that won't cost an arm and a leg

Two stupid questions:
1) can you add in multiple background layers to a video in shotcut and if so how?
2) Is there a tool that can check rechargeable batteries that are embedded in the device to see how healthy they are? I have a sneaking suspicion that the capacity in my device is draining faster than it should and I don't know if its because I charge it on a lower voltage charger or not.

Hi /g/. I'm a youngfag (19) and I got a PC after years of using laptops. My parents are strict as hell and want to put parental controls on it so I can't access it at night. How can I process to either convince them not to do it or to bypass it? It's not installed yet. Also you could maybe rec me one that I can then rec them that can be bypassed somehow
>>
What's an extension for downloading from onlyfans that works anymore?
>>
>>102696284
Just change the password of the Administrator account. When they add parental control restrictions to your personal account you can just log in as administrator instead.

Alternatively create a linux live usb drive and boot from that in order to avoid windows bullshit altogether.

Gonna need help lads.

No idea why this is happening:

>After extended use, my PCs LED lights will be stuck on Red/Blue and whenever this happens, clicking shutdown won't turn off my PC. It will do all the shutdown motions, showing the "Shutting down" screen and then my monitor will turn off as the GPU no longer detects it but the fans/LEDs etc keep running until I press the power button

I tried reinstalling windows but no idea what's going on, online indicates fast startup might be it?
>>
what if you use a PC with an APU, then install an anemic dGPU like nvidia GT710 which can not play videos smoothly, can the videos shown on a second monitor be accelerated by the iGPU (even though the monitor is connected to the dGPU) so the dGPU only has the bare minimum responsibility of pushing pixels to the screen?

>1) can you add in multiple background layers to a video in shotcut and if so how?
I figured it out the version of shotcut I was using was bugged, upgraded and fixed it. Next question is how do I prevent black bars from forming on gifs that I'm making in shotcut? I understand that its a difference between player aspect ratio and video aspect ratio but how to I change that to crop out the black bars?

Depends on what you mean by 'wonky', but an isolation transformer might be enough in some cases. A decent one will run you like $150 last I checked. It won't help if the power is actually cutting out for substantial periods, but can be enough if all you're getting is undervolts or voltage spikes.

Does anyone have a decent recommendation for a Windows tool that memorized exact window sizes and positions on the desktop, and applies them automatically when certain programs are run? I fucking hate it when a program doesn't remember its dimensions and position on the screen even with shift + click when closing it.
I know Sizer and WinExplorer, which are both light, but are entirely manual and I have to change shit myself. There's also WindowResizer but it eats almost 50k of memory just to stay running.

I'm trying to find something lighter, that works on Windows 7 and XP as well as new systems (because this cannot possibly a solution that requires 10 as a minimum, right?)

For one thing you're supposed to be asleep at night. You might persuade them to let you get on at four in the morning if it means you'll get up on time.
For another they could control what your computer can access from their router whether you install gentoo on it or not (for example, by setting a dns blocking schedule or just turning the thing off at night), but that depends on them knowing how to do that.
>>102696380
Depending on what they know how to do, like say their controls include a Wazuh or similar agent, they could find out if he's logging on as an admin account and bypassing things, or if he's booting something else and the computer isn't sending logs but is obviously still in use, but if they knew about that they'd also have set the BIOS admin password to keep him from booting something else.

In laptops the concept is called hybrid graphics and it's an OS/driver trick to make it happen. Or when using an output-less mining card to accelerate a desktop.
Idea is you only output from the integrated GPU but use the beefier one for rendering specific things. They share the same "memory range" or some shit like that so the bigger GPU can casually write to the integrated GPU's output.

Does the monitor work correctly when it's the only display being used? Ex: plug another video input that isn't your computer into it.
Though it's sounding like a power/inverter issue
If you shine a light at the screen during the "off" period of the 5 sec "on an off" cycle and the image is still active like in pic related then it's a back light issue, otherwise it's power cycling due to bad capacitors. Might be something else but the two problems I listed are the most common.

Ah yes, the classic "I have no idea how to Google" post. Don’t worry, I’ll spoon-feed you this one.

Open your favorite script editor. If you're using Notepad, I swear to god…
Write a quick Python script. Something like this:
import pandas as pd as pD

# Define the evil mastermind function that does everything but makes no sense
def j3hD_jY_K_FG_(*xw00000p_Az_zZ):
Rj_Z_ = {}
if len(xw00000p_Az_zZ) == 3:
(Zz123KjsP, Yy987XXzz, QQosT_2_) = xw00000p_Az_zZ
else:
return None # because why would you do anything right
with open(Zz123KjsP) as AAAa11_, open(Yy987XXzz) as BBb22_, open(QQosT_2_) as CCc33_:
Zi1x = AAAa11_.readlines(); Yi2y = BBb22_.readlines(); Qi3z = CCc33_.readlines()
Rj_Z_['A'] = Zi1x; Rj_Z_['B'] = Yi2y; Rj_Z_['C'] = Qi3z
vDataFrame = pD.DataFrame(Rj_Z_)
vDataFrame = vDataFrame.sort_values(by='A')
vDataFrame.to_csv('output.csv', index=False)

j3hD_jY_K_FG_('text1.txt', 'text2.txt', 'text3.txt')

Install pandas (pip install pandas, assuming your machine isn’t a potato).
Run the script, and voila! You've got your three text files turned into a neat little CSV.

What if there were a glass that could be fitted over my computer monitor to match my optical prescription? All those (24-bit I assume?) in the same Ethernet block - the same LAN?
>and a router I get has it's config page or network on there as well ?
The router simply needs one IP from all networks. Being The Big Router we can assume it's number one: 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 and so on assigned to the router's LAN interface.
>if i have network on 192.168.0.0 192.168.1.0 192.168.10.0 192.168.100.0
All those in different Ethernet blocks as the router has difference interface for each one?
They are all reachable from all Ethernet blocks as the router does ROUTING. Assumed we didn't firewall 192.168.0.0 from accessing 192.168.1.0 for example.

The E key on by laptop keyboard doesn't always work. It's fine when typing but when I'm gaming, it's annoying. Should I get an extra keyboard for when I'm playing or doesn't that work well? Also, if yes, should I buy a wireless one? Bluetooth or USB dongle technology?

I don't wanna buy a new laptop, this is relatively new, although past its guarantee date.
>>
>>102704984
There's nothing wrong with external keyboards, except the extra space they use (especially on a laptop, consider how you'll put it so as to still be in a comfortable position to see the screen; consider a laptop stand for example, assuming you don't use an external monitor of course).
I don't think wireless keyboards are really perfect yet. Wireless gaming mice have been pushing to minimise latency for a while now so you can unironically consider them as good as wired ones now (at least any decently mid-high end ones), but keyboards haven't gotten the same treatment as far as I'm aware. So just get a cheap wired keyboard.
You could even get like a cheapo mechanical one, depending on what you want. They really don't cost much nowadays.
>>
>>102705023
Thanks for the advice so far!
The only thing I'm worried about is exactly that, the space and that I don't want too many wires on my desk, especially since I'd be unplugging it whenever I'm not playing and I don't want this to be a hassle every time I do. I already need my laptop to be charging when I'm gaming and my mouse is also wired. But I guess I'll have to find a compact wired keyboard then.

Get a 75% style keyboard.
Also get a laptop stand, and get a USB hub/dock thingy. If your laptop is a modern one with USB-C charging, get one of those powered docks, and then you'll be able to plug in charging + mouse + keyboard with a single cable every time.

>>102704712
I mean, if you're using a cat5e (shielded) from the modem to the router, and your router has enough hardware power to run QoS without hindering your speeds, then I would setup QoS (adaptive) for your needs.

Fuck, those are great suggestions! But I don't get the "with a single cable". The mouse, keyboard and laptop would still leave cables on the desk, wouldn't they? Even if I have one of those docks.

What's the required connectivity for this.. data storage? You could tie a bunch of HDDs together and make it a RAID. You'd need a computer with multiple SATA ports to access it but it would be a single unit.

Sure. It would bring the connectivity all the way up to the networking level.

Terminals. There could be a serial line piped into whatever your terminal emulator pipes into.

>>102705159
Well, the idea is that those cables are there but you put them somewhere where they don't get in the way and you never really have to touch them anymore, you just plug in/out the one single cable from your dock.
Some docks have built-in cables to the laptop, others have detachable ones (i.e. bring-your-own) and if so you can just get a longer cable and even just stick your dock somewhere near the back of the desk.

I mean, if this really bothers you so much - you could just get wireless shit. You'll still have cables going out of your keyboard and mouse towards wherever your dock is, for example. I just don't really see the problem, personally. Is this a computer desk, or are you using some other table or general-purpose desk for your laptop where any extra cable or peripheral "gets in the way" of the other stuff you use the table for? If it's the latter, I suppose you might be better off with wireless shit, if the former I don't understand your autism.

If you want one less cable, then do get a wireless mouse like I mentioned, they're really good these days and also since you're moving the mouse around all the time it's actually quite nice for using the mouse itself, even besides the cleaner desk.
>>
>>102705932
I guess I just don't see the need for getting the USB dock because I already have enough USB ports on my laptop. Well, I have one that I use for my mouse and the other could be for the keyboard. Granted, this would mean that I couldn't plug in a USB drive.

And yeah, it's mostly a genral-purpose desk, I also have a printer and some books lying around here. I think the "problem" with me is that I imagine I won't be using the extra keyboard when I'm not gaming, so I'll want to take it out and store it away more easily.

Your idea definitely makes sense if I had a place where I could just leave all of the stuff like the dock and shit.
>>
>>102706255
If you don't pick up the laptop and leave the desk often, then maybe yeah no point. A dock is excellent for plugging and unplugging one thing instead of three-four things every time you take the laptop away from the desk.

But on occasions, I'll only get 30mbps. It'll be at seemingly random, and refreshing and running a new test will usually show the higher speeds again.

But why is this happening? I tested on both Googles speed test and Oookla, get the same on both. So there must be something else, right? It's like every 1 in 7 I guess. But on Ookla it happened on my first test.

I want to switch to making my notes for uni on a tablet. I need something that has:
>an app for writing like I was writing on paper. Ideally I can move the text around, resize it, eventually convert it into not-handwritten text etc.

After 3 years and me leaving my TV on while I sleep, this happened. I got my LG C1 in October 2021, I have the pixel cleaning every week and the pixel shift option turned on so that the picture moves slightly so that this sort of thing doesn't happen. I leave Pluto TV running while I sleep because they have a few good channels I like but they do this annoying thing between episodes, and sometimes it goes on for a while, where they show the Pluto TV logo for an extended amount of time. Anyway, this happened. My questions are these:

1.) Is there a way to fix this?
2.) If I can't fix it, what is the best possible 55 inch TV I could get that is 120hz and not OLED? I don't want to bother with another OLED TV is this is going to be it's ultimate fate.

It's probably got more platters, which means more read/write heads, which means more moving weight and more friction plus to keep the data speeds acceptable it's probably pulling data from multiple platters at once and combining it all before passing it off to the motherboard, so yeah you could expect it to run hotter. Assuming your WD drive actually holds less data anyway. Even then, it probably spins slower.
>>
>>102709589
>entry-level ipad
Doesn't have a big enough screen. You want something more like 13 or 14 inches.
Also because you can probably type faster than you can handwrite you'll probably want a keyboard. Not that you can't get one with a tablet, just that you need to make sure that your setup lets you switch back and forth from typing to mashing and drawing on the screen rapidly.
Couldn't tell you what the best software is, uni was 10 years ago for me, but even now I'd probably expect some really responsive switching between text boxes and freeform lines, without so much of a need to zoom in, before I'd be confident that computer could replace paper notebooks entirely (definitely wasn't the case 10 years ago).
And I'd have to test out a bunch of tablets and laptops with 360 degree hinges before I could be satisfied that there's enough processing power available to me so that it wouldn't lag no matter how fast I was zipping around whatever notes I'd made.
>>
>>102709973
The 5 tb I transfered to the new drive where from the wd blue drive and it's an 8tb one, so it does hold less data. Crystal disk info also says it's a 5640rpm one while the hc570 is faster being reported as 7200rpm.
All in all, your explanation makes sense, so I guess it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks!
>>
>>102710110
thanks for the reply. I think too that I can type faster than I can write but I at least need to move text boxes around and resize text. I have a paculiar way of making notes and how the text is indented, linked with arrows, what arrows are used and some special symbols I use have to be written by hand probably. In case I will buy a wireless keyboard and use that.
For the size then I will gravitate towards A4 size if a tablet like that exists. I think an iPad already has the software needed for making notes, biggest gripe is if there is a way to mirror pdfs and I think I could try that setup.

a terminal is a physical device, with a screen and keyboard, sometimes a mouse (i.e. X terminal) which isn't a full computer, but rather is meant to be connected to a computer such that the keypresses are sent to the computer, and the output is sent back to the terminal for display
nowadays computers are so cheap that every display, keyboard, and mouse are connected directly to their own computer, but many a year ago this was cost and space prohibitive to have a computer for every terminal, so instead you had one computer with many displays, spread out so many people could use a single computer located elsewhere in the building
that's what a terminal emulator emulates. a terminal.

>>102705204

Your encryption program does that. The number is your private key.

That public key represents you. You can distribute it and tie it to your public email address if you wish. There are publicly run "key servers" for this purpose.
>anyone can encrypt data/message using the public key

That's most encryption - not just PGP - in a nutshell and many programs do this process when you install them (ever seen that "generating keys. this may take some time..." message?).

Back in the day, there were three kinds of terminals: Typewriters, glass typewriters, and smart terminals. Typewriters were your paper teleprinters and came first. Then, glass typewriters, which had screens but no way to move the cursor around, all you could do on them were put one character after the other, maaaybe backspace if you were lucky, and the screen would scroll up automatically. Then finally there were smart terminals, like the VT100, which had their own internal screen buffers and could move the cursor around and put characters anywhere.
Your modern terminal emulator normally emulates a smart terminal (usually a VT100 with some VT340 extensions), but you can actually set it to pretend to be a glass typewriter if that's a thing you want to do for some reason.

When you use an m.2 drive enclosure as portable/removable storage, is there any actual indication for when your SSD is approaching the end of its lifespan?
For that matter, will the desktop mounted equivalent even do that?
I think I'm going to be travelling a lot in the coming decade, going to start moving most of my storage over to SSDs

I've been hearing for years about how nand SSDs have a very finite read-write cycle limited lifespan but.... I have yet to actually have one die as a result of that. My first crucial M4 from like 2010 is still alive and works. Granted it hasnt seen use in like 5 years but still I was expecting it to die long ago seeing as how immature the consumer level technology was at the time.

Why would anyone partition it like that?

You can create "hybrid" boot drives that support both UEFI and MBR boot. This is probably one of those.

UEFI implementations seem to pick whatever you got under \\efi\boot\bootx64.efi, be that 'an actual EFI system partition' or not.

How does the thread filter work?

I have a bunch of >>>/tg/ filtered but there are some recurring thread titles I cannot filter.

E.g: >>>/tg/94090279

That thread is called "/slop/ - AI Art" but if I filter that exact phrase, the filter doesn't work and the thread still appears. "/slop/" works, and "AI Art" works, but the exact phrase does not.

I've considered maybe it's the dash? But in that case, how do you escape in filters? Inserting '\' in front of the dash didn't help.

you misunderstand, BIOS is the name of a specific kind of firmware, in this context meaning the program which is executed by the computer when you first turn it on
these days "BIOS" has become a kind of generic name for this kind of firmware, but what i'm talking about is literally the actual thing called BIOS, not the generic term
BIOS is the name of the firmware in the IBM PC, again also specifically PC, not other non-PC computers, since "PC" has also become a kind of generic name for home computers

other old computers like the commodore 64, apple II, amiga, etc don't use BIOS, they have their own firmwares which do different things. their main job is to set up the system to boot something else, like a program or os from a disc, but they sometimes also came with BASIC or some other kind of programmable interface as well

as for creating an OS with BASIC, a major reason to use an OS is to provide hardware abstraction such that it makes it easier to write software which works on different hardware configurations, you don't need an OS if the program you're running was made for your specific computer, which was the norm in the early days. home computers in the early days were more like consoles, very fixed hardware and programs were made such that you would literally boot them like you would an OS now
you didn't write an OS in BASIC, you wrote programs, think python or javascript, that kind of thing
>>
>>102696284
yeah i had strict retarded ass parents too. could've been into tech way younger and actually learned something useful but i've been playing catch up, you can mess with admin privileges like anon mentioned, or check if the laptop can have another drive installed and just dual boot. or just dual boot off a single disk and give the one they think they can control a tiny ass partition, especially if they're weird enough to know how to monitor usage or the likes they would just think it's turned off. or just boot a live Linux ISO off a USB. there's a number of reasons to get around this. also i would suggest maybe not using the internet so much at night unless it's an emergency work or friend wise, but you're grown and they're being niggers for playing games. your life have fun good luck and try to move out soon or it'll just get worse i promise.

i suppose depending on how you define an OS, BASIC could be considered an OS of sorts, since it does hardware abstration and allows you to write programs which can run on multiple machines with a BASIC interpreter

Do you want to encrypt/sign email? Just use a client that has it integrated. Like thunderbird. Doing it by hand is a hassle that's error-prone and just not worth it.

Also, PGP is relatively mediocre in a lot of ways. For example, it doesn't encrypt the subject or any metadata. You also reuse the same key forever so there's no forward secrecy (which is the thing that good protocols have where the key rotates for every message, so even if a key ever leaks, none of your past messages can be decrypted; with pgp, if your private key is ever compromised, suddenly everything you have ever sent with it is now also compromised). If you have any better encrypted means of communication then do consider using it - heck, Tox is probably about as autistic as setting up PGP, and despite being a shitty immature project, it uses relatively common libraries and is very likely better than PGP email.

Sorry for this stupid question, but could you please clarify what you meant by:

>these days "BIOS" has become a kind of generic name for this kind of firmware, but what i'm talking about is literally the actual thing called BIOS, not the generic term

Has the term BIOS changed It's meaning over the years? Has the term been conflated with other types of firmware?

>Has the term BIOS changed It's meaning over the years? Has the term been conflated with other types of firmware?
yea, the original BIOS is the name of the firmware in the IBM PC 5150, aka the first PC (not the first home computer, but the first PC specifically, modern PC's are actually PC clones, early on often known also as IBM-compatibles, since PC was IBM's home computer line)
these days BIOS is often used as a synonym for a systems' firmware, for example look at almost any console emulator, you'll find the firmware rom images labelled "BIOS's" even though they have nothing to do with PC's
other systems had their own names for them, like the amiga's firmware was called Kickstart, for example (pic related, kickstart on an amiga on first power on instructing the user to insert their workbench disc, workbench being amiga's OS, basically the equivalent of a PC saying "insert system disc in drive, press any key when ready")

I'm using this to calculate the proper bitrate for a video

So I don't think any of you fucks are going to be of any help but whatever.

Just now, I hooked up my AnkerTM 6ft 100W USB-C cable to my portable external Samsung USB-C drive. No issues, except when tried to download a vidya on it from the launcher, it started to hang. Weird. I forced closed the program, unplugged the cable from laptop and portable drive, hooked up the OEM cable (it's like 6" long lmao) and the game started downloading with no issues. Well that's fucking weird. I also asked in an older thread about why my lappy was shutting down randomly when I hooked up the AnkerTM USB C cable + 67W AnkerTM charger to my lappy to run it on AC power. I tried to download the same vidya using the AnkerTM cable and the transfer rate is much slower (supposed to be PD3.1 or whatever).

Yeah if they skimp on the copper or a solder joint goes bad the cable will go high resistance and cause intermittent failures. This can happen with any USB cable, but is more likely with C since C potentially draws a lot more power.
If they skimp on the shielding you can get random disconnects and errors from electrical noise, but that's less likely these days since most devices are fairly noise tolerant.

The team I'm on builds various ecommerce integrations for the web platform, dynamics 365, our accounting software, our project management software, etc. As an example, I was tasked with writing a client application to retrieve inventory information from our vendors and then import that data into Dynamics 365. As another, I was tasked with writing an application which manipulates a cXML file with data from a few different sources, then sends it to the vendor.

This is the opposite of searching for duplicates. I'm searching for single-instance lines.

School me on 120mm fans, do they have different speeds or is it all voltage controlled or whatever?

tl;dr need to replace a PSU fan but factory fan is hardwired so I'll have to solder new one to the wires of old one. Just want to avoid new fan working at max RPM all the time and don't want to buy the wrong thing

I'm trying to run this fix to my stupid problems but I have to replace sda with nvmewhatever because that's the name of my drive. It's all good up to this point:
>grub-install /dev/sdx
I don't know what to replace sdx with.

What laptop model?
Lenovo Ideapad?

Some fans are voltage controlled (usually only two pins), others have a PWM signal (three pins). Standard input is 12V and you would go lower to adjust the speed.

Not all 120mm fans are the same, they can have more or less depth, which will change the performance and noise. You also get them with square or round case.

Correction: The voltage controlled ones have three pins (third gives back fan speed). The PWM controlled ones have four pins.

The fan I'm replacing is with two pins, or well, two wires and that one didn't go 100% all the time so I figure any fan will work then as long as it can fit physically. Thanks

2 wires = power only
3 wires = power + tachometer (monitor RPM)
4 wires = power, tachometer, and pwm signal

Since /mpv/ general is dead, gonna ask here.
For mpv+yt-dlp combo is it possible for mpv to download full video as it streams it? Usually mpv (or yr-dlp, not sure which one does it) buffers around 5 minutes of footage, instead I would prefer if it were to download entire video and save it to disk as I stream it.

You answered your own question.

yt-dlp downloads the video separately from the audio so you can't stream it but it takes like 30 seconds max to download any kind of video for me.

you can download them both at the same time and watch it that way
