My theory is that Anthropic was training opus 3.5 and new sonnet at the same time. But when they finished training sonnet, they realized that the training data was wrong (which is why it messes up formatting). They decided to cut their losses and publish new sonnet and haiku 3.5 anyway, but since opus is their flagship model they decided to redo its training.
