My motherboard burned. Anyone can say what happened based on the location? It was AsRock A520MBeforehand my PC would turn off randomly when playing video games. The FPS would never dip, it would just turn off instead.I got lent a GPU to test if that helps. I tested it and it helped with the turn off. I put in the old GPU to see if maybe it was inserted wrong. It still turned off so I took it out and put in the borrowed one and then the burn has happened.I also checked a PSU before the burn as some stuff I read suggested PSU but it had no effect on the turning off, whereas changing GPU did but then the motherboard burned.I've no clue what's going on. I'm tired and I lost my desktop access. Can a wise anon help? This is not a new build but a new issue.

>>102984875you will
>>102984906Not now, anon.Anyone knows stuff and could help?
>>102984824Cards like the RX480 overdrew power from the PCIE slot, coupled with a trash tier motherboard and a PSU running near it's limit.
>>102985210My GPU is RX 6600 which uses about 100. My PSU is 550. I don't think ram and CPU could've used 450. But does it mean only the MoBo died?
>>102984824old pc had an asrock motherboard, bricked itself after I changed the CPU. was still under warranty, RMAed it. never got burns on it, though. probably still worth seeing if you can get a refund or replacement with yours
>>102985394I messaged the two companies I bought parts from when building this PC because idk which I got the MoBo from as if was slightly over a year ago. Are you suggesting avoiding AssRock? If so, what else is more reliable? I have two RAM sticks, one GPU, don't like RGB, no integrated WiFi, Bluetooth or GPU. I use M2 SSD for storage only. I hope the local IT fix store may have a MoBo compatible with my CPU. Getting desktop parts in Ireland especially on short notice is pain.Sorry if I make typos but I'm not a phone poster normally.
>>102984824Looks like a blown capacitor to me. Most likely it had a dirty solder on one end or the other that was causing it to overheat, thus causing it to eventually pop. I've seen it happen before on power boards for restraint control systems and the like. I would absolutely avoid ASRock in the future, they're not the worst boards out there but they seem to have a higher than average failure rate, so odds of you getting a lemon like this are higher.
>>102985770You gave me hope back. I hope I can get a new MoBo tomorrow morning. :3
>>102985780Hope so too anon. Best of luck to you.
>>102985248Bullshit, the RX660 has a TDP of 132w
>>102985815It defaulted to 100 on my PC and max possible with overclock shown as 120. It is from Sapphire. No need to get so angy, anon. *boops your nose*>>102985809Thanks. I am too tired of this shit.
>>102985770>I would absolutely avoid ASRock in the futureall the dogshit brands of the 2000s are the best ones now
>>102987224although our 2000s msi board lasted a solid decade and typical 2000s cap plague killed it
>>102984824>>102985770it's a blown mlcc cap.there is a posibility that it cracked during card insertion, as the board flexed.when cracked, they tend to short circuit.this can happen to any board.>>102985770>I would absolutely avoid ASRockI had a low power pc based on the AMD Sempron with an asrock board. 7 years no failure.now i have a ryzen 5 with a asrock board for two years. no problems.i'm using top-blower cpu coolers and i'm not overclocking
>>102988690Wow that's a precise info. Thank you so much!
>>102988705you're welcome anon.pic related:my ryzen build i mentioned before
>>102988744I like the nuclear power generator looking cooler.I hope a PC store opens soon and I can get something.
>>102988793it's a boxed heatsink (the bigger one). it comes with a 92mm fan. i replaced that fan with a 120mm high pressure fan. the silver/gray adapter you see is 3d printed.the fan is able to suck air in thru the roof of the case. it's perforated and filtered by a mesh.>I hope a PC store opens soon and I can get something.godspeed
>>102987233>>102987224>although our 2000s msi board lasted a solid decade and typical 2000s cap plague killed itkekMSI still lives rent free and I avoid them where I can because in 2006 I bought an AM2 board for my X2 3800+ that had a bug where it would shut down if you used the onboard LAN. I seethed so hard at needing to use an add in card that I hated them for 10+ years.Only to get one of their GPUs because it was significantly cheaper on sale, only to find they used a non standard layout and I'd need a specific waterblock over a standard one.At this rate, I'll trust MSI again in the year 2056.
>>102988884
>>102988867All seems closed on Sundays and tomorrow is a bank holiday and then I work. I hate this shit so bad.Do you guys think a new MoBo will resolve the entire thing or is there no chance the MoBo was causing the turn-offs?
>>102984824Looks like I'm a bit late to the party. I looked at the boardview, and apparently, the component that blew up is PL40 which is a filtering inductor for the input of PU21, which is an MPS NB691 buck converter. My guess is that PU21's internal MOSFET got shorted. Since PU21 provides the DDR4 VPP rail, your system can't boot without it. I don't think the GPU did anything as it's not connected in any way to this voltage rail. It's more than likely an internal failure of the IC. It could also be a bad RAM stick, but I doubt it, as most modern buck converters have some form of OCP, which should prevent them from failing when their output is shorted. The motherboard is probably not too hard to repair of you already have a hot air station and a soldering iron, but it may not be worth it considering that this is a pretty shit motherboard.
>>102989015not to go into much detail, the caps are used to buffer the power tracks.the power supplies have build-in short circuit protection.when a short circuit (like your possibly broken mlcc cap) occurs, the power supply shuts off.tl:dr you should be fine with a new mobo
>>102987224ASRock used to be the low-end brand of Asus but they got spun-off into their own company at some point and they're now a respectable brand of their own
>>102985844Old AMD cards famously don't report total board power. Only core power. You can easily add 30 to 50 watts of extra power drawn to what it reports.
>>102989194Where does one acquire board views for DIY motherboards?Didn't think they would exist as mobo companies are insanely secretive

>>102989784I just typed Asrock A520M boardview into google lol.
>>102989197>>102989194Is it possible it was affecting the GPU the way I described?>>102989526Oh.A few places open today at 12. I hope they may have a MoBo to sell.
>>102988884I bought an msi r9 380 and the little nigger killed its ports out of the blue. Fortunately someone loved the idea of giving me a ps3 in return for it, and so I got my money's worth.MSI is a garbage company and its cooling solutions suck as well.
Eh, the few shops open don't pick up the phone and they don't look like they sell mobos. I will probably have to order online and wait. :(
B550 is better than A520, right?I have the choice between two Gigabyte B550s.One is M K, the other M DS3H. I'm partial to M K because I only run one GPU. Price difference is less than 10 so not really relevant. Anyone wanna chime in?
>>102991196I bought an ASUS B550 PRIME B550M-KMy CPU is AMD Ryzen 9 5900 so it should be fine.
>>102988690I didn't know ceramics could blow like that, I thought it was just electrolytics
>>102993680Sure can. Like I mentioned upthread, I've seen this type of failure with SMCs on control boards for dock restraints before. In fact I just swapped one on Thursday for this problem, but in that case it was triggered by water damage.
>>102996166Could've storing the desktop in a box lead to this? I moved and it was in the boxes for quite a while.
>>102996382Seems unlikely. Either it was a bad bit of solder that worsened over time or flex in the board cracked it like another kindly anon suggested.
