Thoughts? Worth picking up as an IDE?https://alternativeto.net/news/2024/10/jetbrains-is-making-webstorm-and-rider-ides-free-for-non-commercial-use/>JetBrains has expanded its free non-commercial licensing model to include its WebStorm and Rider IDEs. This move follows the company's recent introduction of a similar model for RustRover and Aqua. If you don't know these software, WebStorm is an IDE for JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and frameworks like React, Angular, and Vue, offering features such as a smart code editor, integrated tools, AI assistance, and collaborative capabilities. The other one is Rider, an IDE designed for .NET, ASP.NET, .NET Core, Xamarin, and Unity development, which provides code quality tools, cloud development environments, and a data science platform, supporting Windows, Mac, and Linux.>Non-commercial users, including those involved in learning, open-source projects, content creation, or hobby development, can now access these IDEs at no cost. However, the licensing for commercial projects remains unchanged. Other JetBrains IDEs are not impacted by this update. JetBrains plans to assess the results of this initiative to determine if it can be extended to additional software in the future.
>>103000404>Thoughts?if paying for JB IDEs is ever something you thought about, your thoughts are completely irrelevant- all educational settings get them for free- all companies pay for the licenses for employees- contractors, if they are actually doing work and not neets pretending to, get it themselves no problem cause it's cheap AFthis has pretty much 0 (zero) impact besides garnering vague PR brownie points
What does it do that vscode can't? Never understood why people pay for IDE's when vscode does everything they do and more.
>>103000722I have Rider from work on my work laptop, same with VS, but on my private Mac I have to use VS Code as VS for Mac got canceled an I ain't gonna pay for a licence ... I guess I give it a shot now, but I would like to have a community edition more.
>>103000848VS Code is a text editor, not an IDE. If you don't know the difference, you're apart of the problem
>>103001021Yes, but with plugins it does everything an IDE does. So what is the reason for buying an IDE over using vscode with plugins?
>>103000722>cheap AFanon, dunno
>>103000404I have a cracked for all of their software, I've had it for free for years now
>>103001052>does everything an IDE does Extra code completion is not all an IDE does
>>103001093how did you crack it?
>>103001103It can do runtime environments and a pretty much everything an IDE does. Have you even used it? It has plugins for pretty much everything.
>>103001116You download a crack. I got one awhile back and have even updated several times and it still works. Go to a torrent site and get a crack and install it like literally any other software crack
>>103000959>on my private Mac I have to use VS Code as VS for Mac got canceledI mean, just use your work licence for personal stuffno one's going to munch on your ass for thatthe only case anyone cares about is if you used a personal licence at work>>103001052>So what is the reason for buying an IDE over using vscode with plugins?try it on a non-JS project, see for yourself>>103001088>anon, dunnoworst case scenario (buying all-products licence):- 60 dollars/month if paid by a business- 20 dollars/month if paid by a person(both cases valid for commercial use; they only care about who actually pays for the personal vs. organization part: https://www.jetbrains.com/store/comparison.html#LicenseComparison )so yes, it is very cheap
>>103001117It's okay to admit you don't know what an IDE is anonIn any case, most of those plugins are poor imitations of what an IDE actually can do for its user experience. Just because it "has a plugin" for something doesnt mean it's at all as functional as for the usecase.
>>103000404>free for non-commercial useInto the trash it goes
>>103001179Dipshit logic, this is a great way for proprietary software to build a user base. Beginners want free, they don't want to spend money yet. Then, when they are experienced enough to make money they want to use their familiar tools.
>>103000404
>>103001179>implying you use it for non commercial use
>>103001135>no one's going to munch on your ass for thatI ain't gonna go down that route, I don't mix my work and my private stuff, ever, not worth the hassle or the potential problems down the line. Just reading that a Faceberg director got fired for buying toothpaste from the $25 lunch voucher, she had a fucking 400k+ salary. And I live in a country that makes companies pay nice settlements when they fire people without cause (meaning employee wrongdoing).
>>103000404Based jetbrains. I'd like to have resharper as well, but Rider is definitely awesome!
>>103000404Smart move, I never used webstorm because it wasn't free, but I use IntelliJ all the time as my main IDE and for web stuff I use VS code which I don't really like, I'd much rather use something IDEA based as I'm used to all the key combos but its a shame its not free for commercial use, might give it a go on some of my personal projects though, but seeing as its not free for commerical use I'd hate to get used to it and not be able to use it at work so will probably just stick with VS code for now.
>>103001441fair enoughthen unless you do exclusively JS-related work (it's not the best for that), I'd say give it a try and get the 15-20$ personal licence if you like it
>>103000404>not clionnobody cares
>>103000848JetBrains does what VS Con't
>>103001133iptorrents has nothing...
>paying for jetbrains products when jetbra.in existscringe>>103001179the only way they're ever going to find out you're using it for commercial use is if someone reports you to them. if you can't afford a jetbrains license then you certainly cant afford to pay the employees that would rat you out.>>103000848for the projects that 99% of this board will ever work on, absolutely nothing. if you're working in a team on complex enterprise software, vscode doesn't hold a candle to jetbrains products. some examples that i use daily: refactoring utils/workflows, much better intellisense, integration with your build tooling/logging/external services, find/jump-to is much faster and accurate, git integration, local history, test runners, code profiling, new project templates, code suggestions are much higher quality, external library decompilation, debugging is 1000x better, code generation / snippets are 1000x betterall of this is possible with vscode, but from a patchwork of plugins that don't integrate with each other, by random third party developers with varying quality. all of these features exist out of the box with jetbrains ides, with zero configuration required, and they all talk to each other. its slick, smooth and simple. i have not yet found vscode plugins for refactoring and code completion that come anywhere close to what jetbrains offer out of the box (and even if there were, you'd have to install a different one for each language or framework).i use jetbrains products for all my hobby shit now too cause im used to the workflow and keybinds.
>>103001954Don't know what to tell you, I just checked the torrent sites I use and there are several cracks up
>>103000404>bought a 12 month subscription in mayWell fuck me. You gonna refund me or what you polish dickheads
>>103000848You ever try working in unreal engine without an IDE?
>>103002339What do you use for Unreal?
>>103000404Never used any of there other ides but clion is goated fr. I have yet to find anything as good.
>>103002357I used Visual Studio before Rider. It's complete ass, I'm sorry to say
>>103000404Zed is free for commercial use
>>103002104>>paying for jetbrains products when jetbra.in existsI'm a fucking brainlet, but how do i use jetbra.in?
>install rider>put it to work immediately doing code analysis>it works>random oi m8 got a loicence window blocks my path>wants me to make an account for a free productEven visual studio doesn't make you do that anymore. what year is this did my machine work?
>>103002553bing it.it installs a crack in any jetbrains products that replaces all the shit that phones home. You can inspect what it does by using the decompilation feature in IntelliJ lmaoooobut seriously though, JetBrain's JVM decompiler is the greatest in the world
>>103002649I'll have a look at it when i get home, thanks again.
>>103002734remember that this is a ridiculous thing to do on your work computer, and you are likely totally fine with the free version even if you were doing this for work
>>103000404heh
>>103000404Fuck those bloats.
>>103000722>if paying for JB IDEs is ever something you thought about, your thoughts are completely irrelevantRetard detected. CLion is by far the best C/C++ IDE.
>>103008561I was going to learn C++, but when I found out that I would have to pay for CLion or use codeblocks, I decided to learn rust instead
>>103000404This is a step in the right direction. So when are they paying me to use their crap?
>>103002649It just calls out to someone else’s de-compiler I think.Interface for itis good though.

>>103000404>makes ide free>still requires a login and internet connecitivty to register and use
>>103002339Yeah, you just compile it and look at run your code. What's the big deal? Let me guess, you need more?
>>103012539That would require reinstalling Windows.
>>103010353literally pirate CLion you turbocuck
>>103014437enjoy your trojans
>>103014140Oh no, imagine being on a computer without internet in 2024 lmao. What third world country do you hail from? Also you're completely wrong. Even with the paid IDEs you log in once and it preserves the session for quite a long time before you ever have to relog.
