Toasting from previous bread

I think I will get a docking station to plug my desktop into, and then when I want to use my laptop on my monitors, I will just plug in the laptop to the docking station. I would plug this into my motherboard and then get a thunderbolt 4 docking station from facebook marketplace https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ThunderboltEX-Thunderbolt-bi-Directional-DisplayPort/dp/B08ZS3D6JY

Thoughts?

This tells me that you're not looking for a 4070 Ti Super or something that'll cause your CPU to really hold you back. You don't need to worry about upgrading your CPU. It's a waste of your time and money.
I personally wouldn't do what >>103026119 said and trust AliExpress for anything that costs $100+. Not becuase everything on Ali is fake, but because you have no reasonable way to enforce your consumer rights if something goes wrong.

3600 for sure if purely gaming. The IPC uplift is pretty decent and it clocks higher too. The extra 2 cores aren't going to help much if they're slow Zen 1 cores. But honestly I think you should get more money and go for a proper current/last gen budget build that is best bang for buck (e.g. 7600) and would last longer too.

>I can speak with a customer service agent on first attempt
>I don't have to wait until 2am for replies to support issues
>No translation issues

99% of all the profits made by nvidia is made from server hardware because GPU's like the a100 and b200 have a 200% margin for cards that cost as much as a car, while gaming GPU's only have like 20% margin at best because of competition from AMD.
>Why are GPU's so much more expensive than the actual cost of parts???
That's the margin for nvidia, they only make the chip and take a 20% cut (except for founders edition). The server GPU's are 100% made by nvidia, so they monopolize all the profit from those high profit cards unlike gaming cards, even if the chip and HBM itself is 1/10th of the cost of the card.
The gamings GPU's are still cost much more than the cost of the parts but you need to remember there are 10 middle men that take a cut from the margin (shipping, cost of warranty, returns, assembly, running tests, etc), and the shop that sells the part typically wants a margin of like 60% to remain profitable (it's probably more like 20% or whatever nvidia tells shop owners what the MSRP is, what they want isn't what they get when you have chinese drop shippers trying to undercut you).

2-4tb is too small for HDD's.
the reason we don't use SSD's for TB of data is because SSD's don't scale as well as HDD's.
But 2-4tb is like a budget amount of storage.
Also people have a lot of misconceptions about HDD's, people like to think that HDD's are more reliable for archival storage or they are wayyy more cheaper, but SSD's are basically better at every metric except scale.
And the point where HDD's get cheap is when you have at least 10+TB. Because the equivalent with SSD's gets very expensive, because there is no such thing as a 10TB nvme SSD for a good price, all your NVME's are like 2-4tb. Your mobo only has like 4 nvme slots if you got a decent mobo (maybe more if you use pcie adapters, and more with bifurcation but it depends on mobo).
And the best part of HDD is that you can set up a Raid setup for the same cost of an buying an SSD setup. The problem is that it's not good for archival storage because you need to power on the HDD and test that it is healthy, even if you leave it unplugged, NVME's do better for archival storage but they have infant mortality, just like all silicon chips like your CPU or ram, they have a high failure rate in the first few years, but after that they probably will last a very long time.
And just all the metrics related to speed is crazy on nvme's compared to HDD's, you are talking about a 10x speedup for large file copies, and 100x faster on random access, and no need for de-fragmentation (but I think only ntfs needs de-frag, so linux users might not need it? I do not know).
Also nvme's lifespan are based on bytes written, when you write too many bytes using "TBW", the SSD will switch to a read-only state, so it forces you get a new SSD instead of risking data loss.

It's been quite obvious since the RTX 20 & 30 series cards that NVIDIA is done with serving poor people who buy their $300 card once every 6~8 years.
NVIDIA doesn't even get that full amount, these people are worth less to their business than GeForce NOW basic plan subscribers.

If you pay $300 for a GeForce card, expect to be buying another one within 4 years or so.
If you don't want to play that game, they don't want your business.

If you are buying a budget GPU, like a $80 used 1660 super / ti from ebay or cheaper on facebook marketplace, you are not going to hit the CPU bottleneck unless you run some shitty single thread emulator (windows 98 emulation in 86Box).
Undeniably, you need a better CPU for a 4060 or 6600 XT, like a 6 core modern CPU, since the xeon can only run 90fps on cyberpunk (you are buying a GPU made for AAA games, you also need a CPU made for AAA games as well).

They also said it was rather slow, which is the part that gets me worried. I'll go visit and take a lot at it this weekend, what are some tests I can run to determine why it is slow and if it's worth spending any money on? They said it was built on 2015 so I expect some old ass shit, but I'm not sure what parts are gonna be bottlenecking it.

I don't doubt there are HDD's that have survived like decades on a shelf, but the idea that SDD's lose data when unpowered has not been measured by any long term test anyone has done, you can feel 100% safe of an SSD holding data for at least a decade.
The reason an HDD could fail without being powered on could be as simple as room temp or you move to a new home and vibrations happen during moving.
HDD's are just a terrible format archiving, you should do your own research if this is the reason for buying the storage.
The main reasons servers use the HDD's is because of RAID, it's much safer to have a backup disk, and it's very unlikely both disks break at the same time. They basically replace the HDD when it starts failing (saves money, maybe the HDD is built different and it lasts longer than the expected life).
And also the TBW of SSD's is problematic since the main reason servers want to use SSD's is for high speed caching (they can't use SSD's because setting up raid is prohibitively expensive, you are spending like 8x more for SSD's), but that requires frequent writing, so the SSD's get burnt up really quickly (Most people buy new SSD's when their old SSD still has 90% of the TBW life remaining, mainly because they need more space).
Also if you are storing images and stuff with thumbnails, SSD's are amazing because the thumbnails will load in in a fraction of a second, while HDD's load the thumbnails in like 1 thumbnail per second depending on the resolution or filetype (all because of the low latency and high random acess speed).
Overall, HDD's have their uses, but I don't think they are cheap enough considering all the downsides, HDD's are great for raid because you have the mentality that you expect the data is going to fail, and you will buy another HDD. If you only have one HDD, that's retarded.

YouTube varies it's quality based on codec and if their CDN has a copy available near you. If you play say a video game that has 1080p CGI then it will present as is it were encoded which could be good or bad depending on the devs implementation of bink or other video playback.

Basically the content will look fine if it looks proper on a 1080p screen. It will look worse if it already looks muddy on a 1080p screen.

If you are a huge movie person, you probably watch movies in the dark, and if the movie is sci-fi or horror or just really dark, all IPS monitors struggle with blacklight glow.
If you want a budget monitor with significantly darker blacks, in exchange for the possible artifacts you get from mini-led (basically it's impossible for mini-led to provide the same quality as OLED, the zones might glitch out and flicker or something). You might want to go with the Q27G3XMN, it has 300 zones which is really large, but it will make dark scenes really dark compared to IPS (but only if you are in a dark room).
There is also a Xiaomi G Pro 27i with 1000 zones.
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/aoc/q27g3xmn
Note the bad rating for the VRR flickering is for gsync/freesync, and this is the worst case scenario where the game is running at 10fps, but 1 frame inbetween so it switches from 10fps to 180fps to cause the flicker, it's very unlikely to happen and your games should run smoothly 99% of the time (get better hardware or use a frame limiter to suppress it).
This is the artifacting I am talking about:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icYY_z3VQEk
Honestly there is not much of a difference between 1080p and 1440p other than size of the monitor, if you want to save a buck go for 1080p, especially if you don't have a GPU better than a 4070 / 7900 GRE (you are unlikely to reach 180fps on 1080p with those GPU's, so it's only worse with 1440p unless you use DLSS).

350 is the correct price.
this is the price you pay for next gen backlight technology.
If your PC is worth 1500 euro's, I think it's fair to get a better than budget monitor if you are sensitive to backlight glow, since this is the ONLY way to minimize it.
If your PC is budget ($1000), you should go for 1080p.
Also mini-led is basically IPS or VA with a better backlight, the AOC monitor is VA, but VA has a history of being terrible for gaming due to smearing, but it seems AOC has decent VA and the one benefit VA has over IPS is noticeably better blacks (better contrast), so it helps even more for hiding the backlight, unlike the Xiaomi which uses IPS (the video with flickering could have been less noticeable if it was VA, maybe...).

Almost always about performance, not about VRAM capacity. In fact, VRAM considerations are third behind performance and reconstruction quality. Even the cards with 16 GB of VRAM like the 4070 Ti Super aren't really that strong. 4070 Super will run out of performance before its VRAM becomes a significant problem

If you're 100% sure that you're going to upgrade the graphics card with the launch of next gen products, it's fine to grab the 5700X3D now. Otherwise I'd hold off on the 5700X3D. The 3700X is still a 60 FPS CPU in most cases (outside of the most CPU demanding games like MSFS 2020); if you're not getting a powerful graphics card as an upgrade, there might not even be a reason to upgrade it, especially if you end up with a low end card like 3070 or something.

>>103026144

Likely that the adapter that the 4070 Ti Super will come with is 2x 8-pin. That's the only cabling it will come with, and be advised that you can't randomly swap cables on your PSU. They have specific, nonstandard pin outs. You'll want to run a separate cable from the PSU to each of the 8-pins on the adapter. If it's a 3x 8-pin 12VHPWR adapter, you can use a split cable for two of the connections. So, still two cables from the PSU.

Because owning the board assembly line is a low-margin business, let other people deal with the cost of that process which includes labor.
It's also politically risky considering most of this assembly is done in China.
There is a reason why all the reference tier cards are unimpressive and card manufacturers charge a significant premium for their best models.
Selling video cards doesn't make a lot of money if you're not the chip designer.

This is why video card manufacturers diversify and sell overpriced motherboards & PSUs.

Yes 2x price but you are doing raid so you have 2 HDD's.
>I can get 3tb for $40, 1tb SSD is $50, it's actually 3.5x cheaper.
Yes, you are correct, but it's still only a little bit cheaper with raid.
I 100% agree that if you care about your data, you should always mirror the data somewhere, even if SSD's have a 99% chance of surviving up until the TBW is exhausted and the SSD enter's read only mode (to help stupid people who don't check the health of their HDD's to replace the HDD before it dies and they need to spend $200+ on a data recovery guy to recover the data with a chance of 100% loss and no refund), there is always a chance SSD's fail, and I could see the argument for data recovery for SSD's being more expensive and permanent. And buying 2x SSD's is too damn expensive.
But if you really are dead-set to only use one storage device, SSD's are better than HDD's.
Nobody is arguing that HDD's are more reliable than SSD's, if you don't trust me, look at other sources of information on the internet that actually does tests and talks about the different ways you could lose data and for me, it always pointed to the same conclusion that consumers are better off with SSD's, most people replace their SSD's with 90% life remaining because 5 years of gaming is not enough to use up like 300-600 TBW. If you are a server, maybe HDD's could save you hundreds to thousands of dollars.

At this point I'm seriously considering making some sort of docking station for raid purposes since my case, unfortunately, have only tight space for 2 HDDs (one need to be mounted upside down or I wouldn't be able to connect it with cables, there is not enough space between them and case side panel).

The time has come for building a New Battlestation - Mid-High Budget Build

Location: PGH PA, USA
Budget: $1500–$2200 USD

Current Rig (7+ years old):
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9RyRN6
CPU: Intel i7 7700K @ 4.20GHz
RAM: 32GB DDR4 @ 1067MHz
Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Gaming K4
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1070
Drive: 476GB SSD Sandisc M2
Monitor: 2x ASUS VG248

Build Goals:
Maxed-out VR for my Vive
Minecraft w/ shaders, ray tracing on current-gen games
Long-term reliability (5–10 years), willing to overinvest in CPU/GPU/RAM but don't know where the bottlenecks are.

I’m looking at two builds but need direction on where to splurge:

Option 1: $2700 (over budget): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rhMjjH
Option 2: $1200 (under budget): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZWqhDZ

Main Question: Will the lower-budget option deliver a noticeable boost over my current setup? I really don't know what the benchmarks are to compare.

Are holiday sales worth it, is there a specific timing on price drops these days?
Are there specific price-to-performance sweet spots for CPU/GPU right now?

Advice from /g/ so far:
Wait two weeks for new AMD drop to lower prices
Wait for black friday and try to buy bundles of similar items to save a few bucks
Lower the PSU quality to save a few bucks for higher end video cards (sus)
Suck it up and drop $1500 for the RTX 4080 Super (sus)
>>

the 3090 has the same gaming performance as 4070, the 3090 a highly sought after GPU for AI purposes due to the 24gb of vram.
So, you could just buy a 4060 or 6650 XT and it would fit perfectly with your 2600x, and it should give you 3x higher FPS.

- Get 7950x or 7900x instead and save mad monies
- No B650s allowed. x870 pro rs wifi is the same price get that.
- No seasonic shit. Get Corsair RM850x or RM850e both ATX 3.1. If you can find Super flower leadex vii 850 with ATX 3.1 get that instead.
- Ram timing is atrocious, get better subtimings, sometihng 36-36-76 or something like that
- Why not Arctic liquid freezer III?
- Get a bunch of arctic fans
- Upgrade to 4080s with the saved monies
- You might also want a new high refresh rate monitor.

>>
>>103030126
If you can get a 3090 cheaper than a brand new 4070, then that's good.
I still think buying a new CPU is not necessary if you just scale down your GPU to a 4060 or 6650 XT (6600 XT), if you can find it for half the price of the 4070/3090 (you get around half the FPS).
Try running the game you have trouble running with a overlay, such as msi afterburner (maybe your AMD software has a way of showing CPU and GPU usage), or just use task manager, and just compare how slow large your bottleneck is. If your GPU is at 100% and your CPU is at 20%, that means you have a really good CPU but a really weak GPU.
Personally the used market for GPU's are typically terrible.
If buying new means you get a warranty and a 30 day return policy, always go for it even if it's 50% more expensive than used (but maybe LATAM does not get those benefits).

Yes. 7800x3d is still the best gaming cpu until 9800x3d comes out. 3d-cache is just too good.

Check https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3VZhDZ
Change mobo to x870 if you absolutely need pcie 5.0 for some reason
Also ram is a placeholder, I cba checking if it's hynix a-die one or not
>>
>>103030820
it was painless, saved my quick fan profile, put on expo 1 for RAM, put default pbo settings I had back on (pbo on, defaults, curve optimizer, all core negative 30, which is an undervolt technically with lower temps/higher boost clocks)

pbo isnt even needed but it runs slightly better with it. not using x3d turbo mode till I know exactly what it does plus the 7800x3D is fast as hell without it. Funny thing is I had a windows bug but it was because I forgot to change the primary boot drive to C: so I had a bluescreen (was trying to load off my other drive). Works perfectly fine.

Previous bios was a year old and the new agesa stuff makes latency even better so it was worth an upgrade, plus it's 9800x3D ready (probably not worth it over 7800x3D but we'll see.)

wait for 50 series and check benchmarks for llm.
I doubt there would be a huge difference with 40 series (prob just 30% faster), but prices might be reasonable if you are lucky.
if you are silly you could buy a 2080 ti 22gb from AliExpress.
It's not worth it for gaming, it's the same as a 4060 in fps and a 4070 should be 2x faster.
4070 TI super might be a middle ground.
The 5090 is tempting but it's very likely in 2 years they will release a 48gb version of the 5090 using new chips (you will pay 30% more speed for the GPU, other than LLM the only reason to want 48gb is for AI video, and that's the minimum requirement for a 5 second 720p video, it's going to look like shit). Note that a 48gb 5090 is going to be like 30% faster than 2 3090's in LLM (mainly the gddr6x to gddr7 upgrade), but you can't use multiple GPU's for AI image and I doubt for AI video as well.
Some benchmarks:
https://github.com/XiongjieDai/GPU-Benchmarks-on-LLM-Inference
Honestly I use google colab for LLM so for me any GPU with 16gb of vram is worthless to me, but you need to be super autistic to use google colab. I also use LM studio with 6gb 1660 ti, if I don't mind the tiny context size, it's perfectly fine for 8B q6 models, I need colab to load 12B Q8 models.

You'd know if you needed 48gb of ram
the fact you're asking shows that you, just like 90-95% of people do not need it
I rarely go over 20 and I don't care about how many programs I have open at all

5200->6000 is a BIG difference, especially on amd.
I just looked at a couple of benchmarks & it's like a 20-25% difference in 1% lows, that's HUGE

I hate that there aren't any 1440p 32" minileds or even oleds. If I'm going to upgrade I want to UPGRADE, and that ppi is what I'm already used to.

>It's a straight upgrade
I mean not if it's your only monitor as it'd make full screen media most likely look worse, since most common media is meant for 1080p or 4K, as such you'll either upscale it in a blurry fashion or be forced to use windowed mode/have black border around it

Get an soldering iron, soldering paste (removes corrosion), unleaded tin, and tin the pad yourself, there's plenty guides on youtube.
For the exposed trace there, get some clear nail polish and cover it (don't cover the pads).

Also tell anyone who tells you to just use leaded solder to fuck themselves right in the pooper, if you're ever going to use the oven method you'll poison yourself with you use leaded tin.

Yeah that is a downside I suppose. Though 1440p, never mind 1080p, aren't really in the running for a cinephile setup.

>control panel is slow
I built a retro PC, can confirm this is a new issue
the old control panel is snappy on windows xp
>>
>>103031615
I'd rather use 1080p over 1440p for that reason
For dual setup, yes, 4k+1440p is the best setup

just hit update and ignore your pc, the only time it's unsafe to bios update is a bad storm where power might cut out. it takes a few minutes, no big deal.

There does exist low melt solder without lead, but lead solder is much better than high temp unleaded solder.
I don't think you will actually get poisoned by using leaded solder in an oven, our ancestors used to drink from lead cups and they turned out fine.

Not to diminish your preferences but that seems like a rather rare use-case. Or rather, it being the primary use is rare - most of us build for gaming or work first.

Gaming mostly, some video editing here and there.

>>103031533
Ok, ok, good numbers. The prices are pretty much the same, so I wanted some numbers just like that, yes.

Yeah I'd stick to 32GB@6000C30. You may page occasionally on larger editing projects but gaming perf is the primary goal. If you're getting paid to edit those videos you might want to run the numbers on a 6000C30 48GB kit, too.

They quite literally did not.
>>

I'd personally just have higher framerate on lower resolution and no downside than lower framerate on higher resolution AND media looking like shit
I feel like without that downside they're a more fair comparison. Obviously if you got the extra resolution for free, that makes 1440p a lot more appealing, but running it at 1440p will usually give you quite a bit less frames (unless you use fake resolution)

afaik only the bios switch and LEDs

Nah, personal projects. The jump to a 6000C 48GB kit right now will blow my current budget. Thanks for the info.

just like lead pipes, the water they drank had a lot of minerals and it created a oxide around the lead, just like the water you drink from most water pipes.

Probably jumpers, if it is an enterprise drive they have some stuff for RAID/Host Bus Adapter things that need to be changed. Or maybe it requires something with the power cable... iiirc.
