not much, in reality the biggest benefits are power consumption some better performance here and there, but most of it is imperceptible. If you want to bite the bullet go for it but maybe you should wait since 24H2 still has some bugs

I had a dual boot with Ubuntu on this laptop, didn't need it so I deleted it in disk management, now I have a free space partition but still not an ''unallocated partition'' which I think you accomplish by clicking ''delete volume'' on that free space partition, however when I try to do that I get ''insufficient space on disk to complete that action'' but I don't get it, I have plenty of space and also why would I need space in the first place to delete a volume? Is there some percentage I have to hit maybe? Right now my main disk is 16% free, that's like around 72 gb, should I maybe hit 20% or more?

If I only use Word and Excel, is there any point in installing the entirety of Office? i.e. does it comes with anything extra that is useful?
>>
>>103111304
If you only want Word and Excel then use the custom Office Deployment Tool method that massgrave outlines.
>>
>>103111320
What for, friend? In the link I quoted I can download the disk images for both Word and Excel 2024. First time I'm reinstalling and not using my old Office 2016 installation, so no clue what that tool does in comparison.

I meant if the office suit (the whole installation) adds anything to Word or Excel that might be useful, e.g. a tool that automatically saves to PDF or something like that. i.e. things that might be useful for a Word/Excel user that will only get installed if the entire Office Suit is installed.
>>
>>103111528
I haven't used Office in years so I have no idea. I'd say that Word itself has a "save to PDF" option that doesn't rely on outside things.

IoT LTSC 2024 doesn't have any requirements besides having a CPU newer then a Core 2 Duo.
>>
What tools do I need to stop telemetry?
Just shutup10?
>>
>>103112219
ShutUp10 is the easy way to disable a vast majority of it as it sets all the disabling registry entries and disables the services that do telemetry crap. Then if you want even more you could use something like simplewall or Fort to block MS telemetry servers as well.
Though obviously if you wanna go this route you need to use Enterprise or Education, or LTSC/IoT LTSC.

Is there a way to find out why MS is blocking me from the 24h2 update?
I manually installed it and got BSODs over and over because of my SN770 (this was before the reports about the problems came up). In the end, my computer even refused to boot, so I had to do a clean install with 23H2. I updated the FW of the SN770 and should be fine now. The other sources of BSODs don't apply to my system.
I've tried to force the update via registry, but windows still won't show the update, so I guess that there is still some factor that prevents the update, but I can't figure out what it is.
Is there any method to find determine the reason for being blocked?

Why is just this combination of computer and screen not working? I'm using the same HDMI cable.
The screen comes on during BIOS. I get the little spinny wheel displayed, then after that it's just a black screen.

>>103127052
if it's not a smart tv, maybe resolution auto-detection issue? on the windows computer try going into display settings and seeing if it detects the display at all to isolate it to the windows box or the display.

on my shitty rig, i use an early 00s small ""hd"" tv as my monitor; it took some doing to get windows to see it as a normal monitor and output anything other than 240p to it and it turned out its "HDMI" input literally cannot cope with anything other than exactly either 1080p or 480i so i had to use a bunch of physical converters
>>
>>103127062
They're both me. I deleted my first post because I forgot to add the information about the BIOS and spinny wheel being displayed.
>>103127079
It is a smart TV, sadly. I wanted a dumb one but no one seems to be making those anymore.
I'll go bring the monitor in here and get them both plugged in and see I can't get some info about the TV displayed on the monitor/change the settings for it a bit.
Shouldn't be a resolution issue, because the TV detects the output as 4K, and that's its native resolution.
That's something that is strange to me: it still indicates it's receiving a HDMI signal, and after the screensaver timeout it loses the signal, or if I wiggle the mouse the signal comes back, but it's always displaying a black screen.
>>
>>103127188
Alright, I tried plugging in the monitor at the same time, and it does connect and display, but it's just a cursor on a black screen, and now I can move the cursor over on to the TV and the cursor is really big. No key combinations do anything, not even CTRL-ALT-DEL.
This feels incredibly retarded and I can't tell if it's me, the TV, or Windows, or all three of us at once.

i stand by my statements. check in windows settings if it "sees" the display at all. HDMI is a data standard rather than an anlog/serial one so it could be fucky in software. if windows "sees" it but the display does nothing you know it's the display and can start pushing buttons on that instead of in windows. like i said, my display is some ancient niggerlicious "TV"--

>>103127244
honestly thats such a bizarre combination of symptoms that you might want to ask an irl IT guy friend to look at it. i'd have expected either windows is not even aware of it, windows is aware of it but the signal isn't being pushed/received properly so you wouldnt even get a cursor, or windows is aware and the tv gets a signal but a nonsense one that results in just a misaligned/bad resolution but otherwise "readable" display.

i dont know enough about hdmi to know if it sends non-A/V data. is your other monitor displaying properly? like is it black screen on both or do you have a nromal workspace on your monitor but black on the tv
>>
>>103127260
>i stand by my statements. check in windows settings if it "sees" the display at all.
I agree that would be best, and that's what I'm trying to do by plugging this monitor in. However, I can't open windows settings or anything else.
>>103127260
>like is it black screen on both or do you have a nromal workspace on your monitor but black on the tv
Black screen on both, cursor on both, it's a normal sized cursor on the monitor and pretty big on the TV. Also the mouse can reach past the lefthand bound of the TV display /sometimes/ based on how I can track the mouse left and take that amount of tracking back right to see it again.
>>
>>103127296
maybe its your grafics card being unable to handle the BIGNESS (or some proprietary "feature") of the tv?

>Also the mouse can reach past the lefthand bound of the TV display /sometimes/ based on how I can track the mouse left and take that amount of tracking back right to see it again.
sounds like it's the tv's fault. my niggerlicious 00s TV does this. dont quote me on it but i believe hdmi allows for display self-reporting but that breaks if the tv is either too smart (needing special drivers) or too stupid (doesn't report at all and windows defaults to something dumb). i would fuck around with the tv itself at this point knowing that your windows install plays nice with another display, another OS plays nice with that display, and while it is probably windows' fault, it would be easier to mess with the tv settings than windows' settings.
>>
>>103127296
You should connect your tv and pc monitor at the same time, this way you can double check if it gets recognised or not and you can change some options.
I do suspect the TV is being funny.

>>103127340
I'll try updating my graphics drivers. The version I'm on is newer than this TV but who knows what will help at this point? It's a 2023 Hisense with an NVIDIA 3070.
>>103127351
Yeah that's what I'm going for right now. Some kind of "virtual" screen being created by the TV (?). Don't know why this didn't happen on my Linux machine though or why that would cause the TV to render nothing at all.

BTW does anyone know if there's a window dragging hotkey? Super-Left Mouse lets you drag windows around on most Linux DEs if you're familiar with what I mean based on that.
Or perhaps a hotkey to move the active window to a different display?
>>
>>103127381
afaik
>hdmi self-reports min/max res
>windows has goofy default settings for external displays
>modern tvs have some goofy default settings to self-report

having experienced similar with my niggerlicious Toshiba TV, I had to get some physical adapters and make it output from DVI to VGA since the HDMI would only accept very specific formats, and even after that had to use my graphics card wizard to adjust the "safe zone". in fact, i also had to adjust mine to the right a bunch on top of narrowing it vertically.

>BTW does anyone know if there's a window dragging hotkey?
Vendor(Windows/Apple/etc Key(technically not "super" but basically super) + any arrow snaps the window to the extreme edge of that screen and resizes it to half of the full resolution.

>loonix
linux is more of a black box than windows these days, and between all the distros, DEs, GUIs, etc. who fucking knows.
>>
>>103127381
OK, think I've got it.
I had an IddSampleDriver dummy driver installed so I could render and stream over moonlight without a screen connected, but now that driver is being rendered as a seperate screen.
I'll start with just removing that, then try and put it back in a way that doesn't break everything but still lets me use moonlight when the screen is off.
Also, the hotkey to move a window over is Windows-Shift-Arrow Key
>>103127415
Nah I think the HDMI communications are fine, it's the above that wsa the main problem I suspect. Not really any way anyone here could have known about that very niche thing I had done but I do appreciate your help pointing me in the right direction with getting the external monitor connected at the same time.
>linux is more of a black box than windows these days, and between all the distros, DEs, GUIs, etc. who fucking knows.
No way haha. Stuff breaks on Linux too but it's way easier to fix than Windows, for me at least.
I use arch and hyprland and the docs for both of those are pretty good, so fixing it is fairly well supported, but that's for another thread. I just included that thing about my linux machine to suggest it might be to do with something software related on this machine rather than the cable or the TV, which worked with my other machine so could be ruled out.
>>
>>103127457
>Also, the hotkey to move a window over is Windows-Shift-Arrow Key
i think thats for between screens/workspaces; i meant within one screen. win+left/right/down worked on my machine, and win+up maximizes.
>>
>>103127471
Oh right, yeah I just wanted a window darg so I could grope around for the whole window rather than just the title bar. Window snapping wouldn't have helped there.

What's the best way to make Win10 look like Win7? I googled but there are so many options, is there some sort of consensus about which one is the best/less buggy one? Honestly I don't really care about making it look exactly like W7, more like having as close a filesystem/folder position as W7 has, so start menu on the lower left side, computer icon on the desktop that makes you access the explorer and so on

I found the problem, there was a Windows.old folder (Windows 11) that was taking a shitload of space (like more than 40 gb), Windows 10 preserved the files instead of erasing everything when installing, still weird it's so big since this is a new laptop and I don't think Windows 11 should be that big, dunno

You should reinstall another time and this time during installation DELETE all disks when choosing where to install and install in empty space.

So, I haven't been following the news lately (~1 year). Are AMD CPUs still slower on W11 when compared to W10? I'm building my new machine today and idk if I should just slap LTSC on it or try W11.

Where are the best deals for a LEGIT retail key?
>>
Shit, what's that website again where you can basically build a Windows install image?
>>
>>103131876
Any good deals are just going to be generating keys using the MAS technique and selling them to you. Just do it yourself.
MS makes all it's money in cloud and services. They don't care if you pirate at all. That's why this massive piracy hole is still here. They get increased market penetration.
If you're trying to avoid being sued because you're doing something commercial and selling it on just buy the license at source and push the cost on to your customers.
>>
>>103131710
LTSC has updates, but only important ones that are actually an improvement. It's meant for places like banks and hospitals, which will still be wanting those important updates (it wouldn't be called Long Term SUPPORT Channel if it wasn't supported), but not the rest of the crap because more crap equals more things that could go wrong.
The updates that it skips are the bloatware updates.
>>
Ok, so how the fuck are we supposed to verify the has for IoT LTSC isos? Only corroborating info comes from third party websites. I wanna hear it from the horses mouth. visualstudio.com doesn't appear to have these hashes as far as I can tell.
>>
>>103131710
>>103132437
nta but can't you just use local group policy editor to delay updates to your preference and/or target a specific feature version? i mean i guess ltsc just does it automatically but i feel like having the option to tune it to your liking is more useful
>>
>>103130197
you should be able to roll it back, i would start with that and see if it fixes the issue
>>
>>103132477
I don't think Microsoft has ever released hashes for LTSC, so the only way to get them from the source is to download the ISO after buying it and hash that, which defeat the purpose.
Massgrave has the ISOs, and is a trusted user, so if you're comfortable trusting him (and he hasn't caused problems for anyone yet) then go with his files.

KMS_VL_ALL is still worth using as local KMS activation still works fine (it's good for activating Server for example still.)
MAS is used for its open source HWID activation which sends your HWID to MS activation servers and basically keeps your PC activated forever without needing to trick it with local KMS stuff.

Security tip to all Windows users who have any software crypto wallets and pirated software installed on their machine:

You MUST block Windows PowerShell from making outbound connections with your Firewall as it is a massive security hole that Microsoft has stupidly left open by default.

"Cryptostealing" malware has become increasingly common in the past few years trojaned via pirated software (e.g. games, Photoshop) even by so-called "trusted" uploaders, and their primary method of sending this data back to their servers is via PowerShell scripts. More and more Windows users are finding their crypto wallets being emptied and later having discovered random PowerShell scripts running in task manager that turned out to be cryptostealing malware scripts.

To block outbound connections for PowerShell with Windows Defender Firewall, open the start menu and type in "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security" and select that app.

Select the Outbound Rules category on the left, then add two new rules to block the following programs:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe

Name them PowerShell 32-bit and PowerShell 64-bit respectively.

You may optionally add the description "Block outbound traffic due to cryptostealing risk" to remind you later why you blocked it.

When you do ever need to run PowerShell scripts in the future that require outbound network connections you can temporarily disable these rules when you need to.

Yes, but it kind of depends. I did that when I went from a SATA SSD to NVMe, except I also had to go from MBR to GPT partition table and IIRC the Windows bootloader had to be reinstalled to match. Gonna try one more reinstall (because hey, why not) since or some reason I've noticed that my changes to the File Explorer (eg stripping 3D Objects from the Left Pane) have stuck, and it's my final cope that I didn't reinstall properly by doing it from the iso file instead of a USB in uefi.

Is there any way to at least swap out Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler as the default?

Does Tiny10/Tiny11 need activation?
>>
I'm using qemu/virt-manager to run several windows VM.
Is there anything specific settings I should use?
>>
>>103150511
Yes. MS would go after him if it was already activated.
>>
>>103149575
I miss the old kon-boot
>>
>>103150520
If it's anything like Virtualbox VMs just make sure to have the VM use at least 2~4 CPU cores and GBs of RAM. Also 128MB at least of video RAM.
Also keep them offline until you use the VMware guest utils to slide in something like ShutUp10 to disable all the telemetry shit.
>>
>>103148871
What's the problem of getting IoT compared to LTSC IoT?
>>
>>103150550
Even for tiny10/tiny11?
>>
>>103150551
You get IoT LTSC for the extended monthly update cycle. Getting just normal IoT Enterprise gives you a normal monthly update cycle until 2025.

>>103150557
Not for those as the telemetry was carved out of them. Honestly those are best to use if you wanna have Windows VMs.
>>
>>103150567
>if you wanna have Windows VMs.
Thanks man.
I've been having some performance issues, and want to pin it down.

nigger why the fuck are you using windows media player, do you have lavfilters setup? directshow is so shit now. (main reason for mpv/vlc preference) do you even have icaros shell extensions setup for this abortion? you know what you want? directory opus 13, try out the free trial then crack if it you like it after 30 days. honestly, it's the best file explorer/manager for windows
>>
Any of you use TuxGuitar on W10? I'm tired of pirating Guitar Pro and this just works, except for the fact I can get dark theme to display properly.
Also if there is other free alternative on Windows I'd like to know it too.

"nigger", I use mpv/vlc by default when sitting down to watching dedicated videos / movies / music playlists, but the only thing that runs in the *preview* window in the file explorer is WMP Rich Handler.
There's a degree of convenience when skimming files of all filetypes to just click once and have it instantly play / *preview* in the file explorer, instead of having to run it in a separate player; and it kinda looks shit when half the file explorer pane wants to be temperamental about being in Dark Mode or not. Do you even fucking use Windows.

What tool do you use for windows to get sandbox for applications that you don't trust?
>>
>>103102958
That's more of a Unreal stutter Engine problem.
>>
>>103150968
wigger why the fuck are you using default windows explorer for this shit then, directory opus 13 does the shit you want and better without using any wmp shit RIP DESKBAND
>>
>>103151184
Windows has their own sandbox application, but you have to familiarize yourself with powershell; Back in the day I just used sandboxie
>>
>>103150996
It's scary seeing someone running that in modern times; You don't even have to open a web browser for that OS to get hacked.
>>
>>103151434
It's not connected to the internet. Gets a bit annoying to shuffle files across via USB, but I'm keeping it airgapped.
>>
>>103151428
Let me be honest.
I'm pirating shit, and don't want ransomeware
>>
>>103151449

>>

That's what I used.

I used to be able to press Winkey + L and it would log out and turn off the screen instantly, now it only logs out and does not turn off the screen ever.

I've tried the console logout timer thing but no matter what I set it to the screen won't turn off.

Any anons know how to fix this? I'm on Win11 btw.

There's either Windows Sandbox or Sandboxie Plus really.
>>
>>103151449
>>103151485
sandbox-plus is in a foss paywall, for it's exclusive and advanced features you have to pay for it, otherwise there's this crack that only works in windows test mode https://github.com/lyc8503/Sandboxie-crack
so games with anti-cheat won't let you boot or play while test mode is enabled, there's a way around this but only if you motherboard supports the exploit https://github.com/lyc8503/Sandboxie-crack/issues/5
>>
>>103151184
The one that comes with Windows is all you need. Just enable it in the Windows Features dialog box, restart your computer and start sandboxing. It makes a pristine Windows environment you can cut/copy things from the host into to run.
>>
>>103151590
based chinks
>>103151620
windows sandbox is only relevant for uwp apps, it doesn't function nearly the same as sandboxie nor does it offer any fine grained permission control
>>
>>103150968
You could look into QuickLook or PowerToys Peek it may suit your preview needs depending on how you use it
Also +1 on the Directory Opus rec, it's really good for a lot of stuff on top of previews if you don't mind the price
>>
>>103150557
Not sure if it's the same .iso(archive.org) but for me Tiny10 is not activated and has that nag logo, can't change background color etc.
I only used it for testing some python scripts and other stuff but still not sure if there's a better version available.
>>
>>103150845
Just use Guitar Pro. You don't exactly need to updoot it like ever. Even a version from 2018 is absolutely fine.
But even then I've always just used .txt file tabs/notation downloaded off from various sites anyway so that's that.
>>
>>103152258
Tiny10/11 at their cores are just heavily cut down 10/11 Pro installs that aren't activated. Easily done with KMS_VL_ALL or MAS though, KMS activation feels better for VMs IMO.
>>
>>103121544
It wasn't out of contrarianism. XPs hike in RAM and disk space demands were hard to swallow when it was just Win2k with a new theme. In 2007 I got a new computer with more than enough grunt to run Vista (Athlon 64 X2, 1GB RAM out of the box, but rapidly increased to 2GB, 160GB HDD), so that's what I ran. By the time "This program requires Windows 7" became a regular occurrence a few years later, 8 was already out, and it's performance optimisations over 7 made it a good match for that now-creaky Athlon.

>>103123763
Yeah, NT4 wasn't bad (but as alluded to, Win2k was my fave), but it was a bit buggy in the early days (needing THREE service packs before it became usable) and it being so threadbare (no PnP, no USB, no nothing) was also a pain. But it was as fast as a rat out of a drainpipe, ran acceptably in 32MB, and (after SP3) was six-sigma solid. Definitely the "Workstation" OS it billed itself as.
>>
>>103151485
Games, nothing triple A.
But games for dubious ruffian sites.

>>
>>103152329
>KMS activation feels better for VMs IMO
How so?
>>
>>103153057
NTA, but because it's no modification for the OS at all. The user-mode rootkit in many KMS activators exists to get around the fact that you can't KMS activate against a local KMS server - which is moot if you're activating a VM.
>>
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT? I updated my office because it said product activation failed and now it says I can't edit a fucking excel sheet unless I upload all my files to (((Onedrive))) or buy Microsoft 365? Why do they keep doing this. Is there any solution. I'm on Windows 10 Home.

serious question:
is endgame? Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021 (21H2) + HellBovine's tweaks and registry files from "Guide: Optimized Image" forums post with NTLite + privacy.sexy (make script that debloats and disable more windows features/settings, blocks tracking hosts into batch script which makes it extremely portable to use on windows updates where changes gets reverted or fresh installs) and simplewall (replaces windows defender firewall + blocks microsoft connections further) and ONLY updating between 6 months, and reinstalling Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021 (21H2) each December. As Windows Updates, are scummy and shits up your changes. New security updates/hotfixes gets integrated in ISO each November.
>>
>>103153272
>As Windows Updates, are scummy and shits up your changes.
This is entirely your own retarded fault. As you've been told many times now, reject modernity (shitty memescripts) and embrace tradition (Group Policy Editor).
>>
>>103153293
This does the same shit and more. It's known updating from Windows Update shits up your system. Microsoft Update Catalog does not, simply a one-click install.
>>
What is the trick to install windows 11 with a local account now? The fake email thing doesn't seem to work

stop using MSO.
Consider OnlyOffice or LibreOffice instead.
Why do you fags insist on this cucked garbage anyway?

making a boot usb with rufus is the most common, it gives you option to bypass mandatory internet connection and/or make a local account automatically

I use LibreOffice as well, but it has weird quirks. I'm used to MS Office. I don't even know where this 365 garbage came from, I had 2021 installed. What are you doing bro? Just uninstall all of it and go follow https://gravesoft.dev/office_c2r_custom
Just check word, ppt, and excel and activate with ohook.
