I got my T480 a couple days ago, pretty happy with it so far. pretty silent, doesn't heat up much, looks cute and it's in great physical shape. also came with a 512GB nvme and a single 16GB ddr4 stick (stuck it in my other laptop to upgrade it to 24 and put a 2x16GB kit in the T480)
only "gripes" I have with it are the non-backlit keyboard and the 24Wh external battery, both of which I've ordered upgrades for (backlit kb + 72Wh battery). also weirdly enough I can't get Artix to remember screen backlight levels between reboots. on my gaming laptop backlight + backlight-dinit work, but not on the thinkpad (service doesn't even start, it throws an error). if anyone's running Artix on a T480 and managed to make that work, I'd appreciate the help, everything else works perfectly

My thinkpad A485 display is gathering a lot of bright spots and I want to upgrade it. I'm comfortable disassembling hinges and not ripping ribbon cables, but I'm not comfortable at all when it comes to figuring out display compatibility. I hear that the A485 is a clone of the T480 but with AMD, so unless the graphics card has influence on what kinds of panels it supports, or they changed the connector, they should be functionally equal. Currently it's sporting the Full HD IPS display, maybe I can upgrade to the T480's QHD? Or maybe there's a compatible oled display?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a screen replacement?

can I disable the trackpoint on Thinkpads without disabling the buttons above the trackpad? it can be disabled in the bios but then the buttons are also disabled and I use those with the trackpad

I checked which files were included in backlight-dinit, and in the script I found a mention of /var/cache/backlight/ which had a single file in it (something named like intel_backlight-brightness-old). removing it fixed the issue
now to wait for my new keyboard and battery to arrive (battery's an original one but it's coming from China, it's gonna take a while, the keyboard will be here next week at least)

So after a few days with the T480, things I like:

- It's a well built machine, feels ''premium'' and looks elegant
- The double battery
- Silent (at least so far, haven't really put it through demanding tasks yet though)

Things I don't like:
- The keyboard, for how much it's memed the keyboard feels very mushy, it's not satisfying typing on it, unironically my cheap Fujitsu Lifebook keyboard has a more satisfying keyboard to type on
- The display, it's really mediocre, the colors are washed up and it's dim even at the brightest setting, again my cheap Lifebook has a way better display despite the t480 costing 2.5x more
- All the usb ports are on the right side (why?)
-Fn is the last key to the left instead of ctrl, silly...I know you can swap it in the BIOS but still very questionable choice

My feelings is that people just like how those laptops look and tend to hype other things about them as well, like the keyboard which is nothing special at all

gonna add to this, the issue was probably caused because I cloned the drive from my other laptop to the T480 instead of reinstalling my distro from scratch, since my other laptop is a 9th gen Intel + hybrid GPU setup it was probably using a different backlight configuration, so the leftover file from when I cloned the drive prevented the service from starting. at least now I can use my other laptop's trackpad again since when I opened it to add the 16GB stick and the T480's nvme to clone from the old one, I noticed the battery was bulging a lot so I removed it and my trackpad started clicking again kek. ordered a new battery for that one too

Since I been looking at these too - a couple of points to consider. If it's 1920x1080 (FHD) then it's an IPS but it's only 45% ntsc. The L390 Yogas are better at 72%. The 1366x768 TN screens should be avoided at all costs. Also, don't get cucked with a dual core model, the Celery and i3s are also to be avoided unless you have very modest needs (and if you're currently using a Chromebook, you might). The good news is there are dual RAM slots so at least that can be upgraded easily. It's usb-c charging and you don't have any dead port firmware fuckery to worry about like with the -80 series.

i bought a used t470p type 20j7, it has a WWAN card in it (the tray is missing but I can see the metal casing on the card. BIOS settings has it enabled btw) but lspci, lsusb do not detect the card, and windows does not list it either in device manager.
do you think I should try something else before concluding that the card is dead? As you read this I'm probably running the UEFI diagnostic tests preinstalled, but it will probably not show up there either, is what i think...

The problem people most complain about with newer laptops is throttling, which isn't so much a function of the processor's inability to crunch data fast enough, but that cooling systems have gotten so much worse in the scramble to make everything so damn thin. There's basically no difference between 2nd-7th gen Intels, then 8th was a decent jump in processing ability (not just multi threaded performance by way of quad vs dual cores previously), then nothing til 12th. And in the interim AMD has become the superior choice for anything newer than Intel 8th gen anyway.

If you're not doing a classic keyboard swap or coreboot, there's no reason to buy an X230 in 2024.

Anything between x230 and x270 is going to be very similar in performance. And you can get an equal or better IPS screen at a 1080p res without modding. You also avoid the meme tax. It works better than Chrome/Firefox add-ons because it's fully integrated to the browser and you have access to a lot of things like using macros in your browser. It's slower for some usage if you're using only the keyboard but you can use your mouse in qutebrowser anyway.

I have a x201 on which I'd like to remove the default BIOS. However libreboot is not supported anymore because of fan problems. Is it safe to install old libreboot images and use something like thinkfan ? If so, does an equivalent of thinkfan exist on BSD system ? And has anyone had good experiences with coreboot + me_cleaner ?

Coming from a 15.6 display to the 14 inches display of the T480 it feels tiny, no idea how people use shit like 12 inches displays like in the x200 series

Today I figured out the issue.
There's small crack in the nub making it lax when moving it, despite being well attached.
I put small amount of glue and it work back like it supposed to.
I see know why people love it.

the sata bay is where your nvme is. you can have either of the two, not both, since they go into the same place. if you want more storage you can either upgrade the nvme you already have, or put another nvme into the wwan slot (you'll need either a 2242 nvme with a b+m key, or a 2230 nvme with an adapter, those are much easier to find)

Keyboard is probably fucked and is not serviceable so you'll need a replacement. AE will have them under $20 but they're knockoffs. Look on eBay too.

You can try and pop the keys off and clean underneath with electronics cleaner or IPA to make sure they're not just sticking, and reseat the keyboard cable connector.

This is why I haven't bothered to "upgrade" the display on my X230, 1366x768 is perfectly fine for a small screen like that. 1920x1080 is uncomfortably small on my A285 without UI scaling, and the 125% or 150% scaling kinda sucks anyway.

I picked up a T14 gen1 AMD last year. Been pretty good. I run Gentoo and it compiles shit faster than my main desktop at the moment (a 12 year old machine I need to replace but keep putting it off because of GPU prices).

Everything past the gen1s have various issues which turned me off. Gen 1 is bad enough with the internal battery and some other problems but serviceable at least. It's the last generation with an Ethernet port for example.

Stay away from the Intel models.
