How was life without the smartphones?t. newborn 2006 baby
>>103196638it was different. people were only online for short periods of time, maybe not even every day. and before 2007 you were still kind of a weirdo if you spent too much time online. girls only used it for msn messenger and myspace and maybe chatrooms. forums were thriving however. also what he says >>103196735 the web was predominantly white people only.
>>103196638people interacted more and had more friends. you could equally call that "life before social media" but smartphones and the societal issues caused by excessive internet use are heavily intertwined. back in the day it was just us nerds that spent all day on the computer, and we still had slower internet and more irl nerd friends. hey anon, guess what pic related is for.
>>103196741so many good forums lost to time
It was shit. You actually had to leave the house to go buy stuff and tinder hookers were harder to find. You are living in a glory age of comfort.
People used to bike to your house and knock on your window "CAN ANON COME TO PLAY" and you would leave your counter strike 1.5 game and go outside and swap pokemon cards and then make a plan to meet after to school to hang out in the forest and pretend aliens were attacking so you have to shoot them with your stick gun. Then one day you had to visit this other guy's house and it was a huge deal when making a new friend. Seeing his room and all shit stuff and hanging out in his garden. And the directions would be like "take a left at that gas station and then follow the road until you see this little path through the forest and then you go past that old fountain statue and uhh"So the best way was to go there with them and then memorize the way from school.
>>103196638we had mobile phones which looked good or interesting and fit your pocket turn off internet on ur slabphone and see how bad it really is as a phone
>>103196789And you had to memorize the phonenumbers to people and if they were using the dsl modem it wouldn't work to call them.
>How was life without the smartphones?Nobody made friends because there was no social media. And nobody talked or had sex since there was no social media. And nobody knew anyone since there were no phones. Nobody talked. There was no sun. It was in the dark before before times
You used to be outside playing all summer, literally 12 to 24. And when you weren't you were playing multiplayer/coop on consoles physically

Better. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. No trannies, no corporations, no feds

>>103196735it was not less niggers, niggers were the same and still in their gettos, the problem is how easy is now to access internet. and op i would say it was better but that is very boomer and i love my smartphone, the problem is that i love it because i understand how hard was to get or access information in internet but zoomies dont get that, they have all the info in their head from the beginning and they dont know something better because the things they are watching are the only thing they can watch, nobody watch TV anymore, and cartoons were different each other but now every kid video is the same loop hellhole that doesn't add nothing to kids brain.

My parents used to limit my computer and online time (they were two different things) because the internet was the devil (led me to question and then reject Mormonism so maybe true). Now they are online all the time on their phones (and are no longer Mormon either). Feels pretty weird.

You no longer have child labour and with birth control you can have all the sex you want and not have to grow up because you had a child.

>>103199451>the brain fully matures by 21Spastic sighted
>>103196638From around 2000-2008, the primary method of internet communication was instant messengers, which required someone to be physically seated in front of their computer and giving full attention to whoever they were talking to. The very moment instant messengers made mobile versions available, you could no longer tell who was actually available to talk anymore, even if they were signed in and "online." That was the true beginning of the end. Interactions became more casual and fleeting. Conversations became shorter and less meaningful. Before, I would have 3 hour conversations with a new random person in IM on a nightly basis, with both of us fully invested in the conversation. This kind of eagerness and excitement just to get to know other people, to hear their experiences and exchange thoughts and ideas has been completely lost thanks to the more casual nature of mobile phones. No one can have anyone's full attention anymore. The internet becoming more shitty and hostile is because of this, in my opinion, because there's no room for people to REALLY hear each other and become friends in the same way as before.
>>103199472Around that time. The brain being physically mature does not say anything about the maturity of the person. You could argue you're still forming your personality until you're 40 or older.
>>103199466A few more years back (01) here. Nothings different. I happen to remember life before smartphones but no one else does.
>>103196638Internet and real life were two separate things. No one would talk about the latest stupid Tiktok trend or Xitter controversy as they do today. The only way to connect to the internet was using a desktop computer or a laptop, so that was somewhat of a filter. And you connected to the internet when you need to actually do something that you couldn't do offline, like sending an email, looking for information about some topic or downloading ROMs. And then you went offline.
>>103196735Broken brain
>>103199507You know, you could just go educate yourself on the subject, instead of being yet another confidently wrong, 85 IQ reddit scientist.
>>103199498>Before, I would have 3 hour conversations with a new random person in IM on a nightly basis, with both of us fully invested in the conversation.you can literally still do this now on pisscord. in fact it's all zoomies do. just stay on pisscord all day in chat rooms. they do not leave their homes either.
>>103199507your personality never stops forming
>>103199601actually its foamed ant broth
Portable media was a steep premium during the 2000's. We can take for granted now that every phone and tablet can double as an mp3 player and playback any 1080p video, but back then a iPod was $400 and while there were cheaper options, you were still paying over $100 just for a music player. If you wanted to play video on-the-go and you had something that could play video (like a PSP), you had to transcode the video down to a very specific format that it could read.
>>103196638As a millennial we just had phones without social media/internet. So they were used mostly for texting/calling. You could take pics and videos with those phones but they were pretty bad in quality, also you could send pics (mms instead of sms, stood for multimedia messaging service) but it costed way more than a regular text (sms) as far as I remember. So basically you could "sext" back then too but it was more grainy and expensive
>>103196638I guess it was fine, I used to actually buy magazines and read (physical) books when I was going on trips instead of zoning out on my phone while traveling, I had an iPod for music and whatever too. Part of me is tempted to try a little digital detoxification.
>>103199601Yeah you turn 60 and suddenly start gambling! No, it is more stable after your 20s. Sure, you still change over time but you're not going to randomly change from being an angry coot to a nice person. Maybe excepting a religious conversion. >>103199586>educate yourselfWow how helpful. You suggest I read some plebbit posts? Maybe I can read some ChatGPT created psychology journal articles???? Do better.
I was in my last years of highschool when smartphones started to be in exponential demand and as a child cellphones were only something hyper rich kids had and they were basically just phones + snake. I can categorically tell you internet and cultural brain rot already existed and there were the same amount of contrarians reactionaries talking about it. Now you don't have to believe me, the internet has allowed everyone to see this. Yes it is real you will eventually struggle with the realities of life and it will be harder for you to "understand" new generations and it will be harder for you to adopt new things. In reality you cannot change much and just hope you don't get drafted or killed in a nuclear Armageddon. Abe Simpson was right, it will happen to you.

>>103196638It took money and brains to go "online". So conversations with other human beings was actually possible. People could have friends from all dregs of society. In the early 2000's I had friends from all sorts of walks of life. Then the iPhone happened. Then politics grabbed the interest of the general public.

>>103196638Quieter, if you wanted to talk to your friend you would call them on the land line and ask if they wan to hang out. Or if you knew they used a messenger, you could ask them there. With phones before the current smart phones, you could text your friend but people didn't have long conversations, just enough to get the message across. One of the reasons leet speak came about was to make texting quicker. T9 fixed a lot of that though.

There was no megaphone effect. No one could communicate with a giant audience, just much smaller forums where no one could possibly give a fuck about a short video of you being an attention whore, or just blurting out what was on your mind at any given moment. Communications were topical and focused on hobbies and news instead of self image and vanity. The audience was smaller and higher quality because knowing how to use a computer was barrier to entry, and content wasn't so self produced.

>>103196638I was born in 1995 in a rural town in Germany, a place where it took until 2010 for every Normie to own a smartphone. Before that time, people seemed less stressed, less impatient, and far less confused than they do today. After school, my friends and I would sometimes head to one another’s houses, using the landline to call our moms to ask if we could stay for dinner—or, if it was the other way around, invite friends over and have them call their mom. Friends would often show up unannounced, ringing the doorbell to see if you could come out to play. On rainy days, we stayed indoors and played lego or vidya together. I have vivid memories of sitting with two friends in front of a PC, watching one of them play Sims 1. Another time, four of us gathered around my PS1 to play Blast Chamber. We lived in the moment, enjoying each other’s company and having fun without distractions. Nowadays, with smartphones and social media, even the things you try to distance yourself from seem to creep back into your life, always lurking just out of reach. My young mind would have never imagined the future of society to be so grim.

We are at a crucial point in history, not just the atheist history, but the entire history. It's because nowadays men are realizing they just are disposable coomers, they lost their narrative they were the alpha sexWomen realize they are whores and endorse their true nature in public nowThis never happened before and if women can make a sustainable society out of this, we are never ever coming back to the tens of thousands of years of the lie of men being in control of women.Nowadays the inversion is so deep, that the average roastie can become officially a prostitute, bit the modern prostitute:-has no physical contact with men, especially ugly men-is paid by men to have orgasms, instead of giving orgasms to men-is glorified socially by women and menThis has no precedent in history and it changes the deepest and only social fabric which matters

>>103210794>Mog is old af term used on 4chanIt isn't a 4chan term. It originated on misc (old bodybuilding.com forum, and its spinoffs like sluthate and putahate). It started as amog, a term used by pickup artists that meant "alpha male of group" (the guy girls bring to the club with them). The idea being that in order to get laid in a club you need to disarm the AMOG, usually by having your wingman distract him with male-male banter while you seduce the girls. This term was embraced by bodybuilding where it drifted from a noun to a verb so that a you could say "this guy amogged me" essentially meaning "he was more alpha". Then the "a" got dropped and it became "mogged.". Mog now simply means "to be more attractive to women", having drifted significantly from its original meaning and context. >so whatWell most internet lingo / memes on the western internet did in fact originate on 4chan. "Chad" and "Stacy" originated on /r9k/ for example. But certain terms like "mogged" are garbage from other websites. It's sad how much 4chan culture has been diluted by newfaggots over the years."robot" replaced by the reddistism "incel"."cumdumpster" replaced by the reddism "femoid". (did you know 4chan used to have a global wordfilter, on all boards, that would change "femanon" to "cumdumpster")?

What's a realistic solution to bringing up a child in the current year without mandatory exposure to social media? Becoming a part of some kind of conservative/religious community that consciously avoids such things as a whole?
>>103206451i agree this is the essence of it.we even used rl and vl with our nerd friends and tried not to get too many personal information into the internet. video games were the most fun together with other people in person.
>>103212793Basically zoomer faggot lingo
>>103211441lol i memorymog you
>>103196638>Brain rot It's nigspeak
>>103213747If we are genuinely talking about realistic solutions, then there is none. Forcing them to not interact with it at all requires either putting them in a commune or cult (like what you suggested), which will fuck them up in different ways, or harsh controls and punishments in normal society, which will result in them harboring resentment against you and wanting to engage with it even more to rebel. The realistic solution that minimizes fucking up your kids in my opinion is delaying the adoption of social media (so they don't get to be the first kid in their class with a smartphone), offering them healthy and fun alternatives so social media seems less alluring (if they aren't bored out of their mind, doom scrolling isn't nearly as appealing) and then when the majority of their social circle engaged with it you introduce them to it in steps, having frank discussions about risks and benefits with them.Going full cult on them to avoid them interacting at all is far more likely to fuck them up irreversibly.Realistically a lot of it comes down to bad parenting - the kids that are the worst with it are the ones where the parents wanted them to be silent during drives so they put a iPad on the backseat, same as the kids in the past that were sat in front of the TV by their parents so they didn't have to actually be parents. Be a good parent, show them that other things can be more fun, be honest with them about why you want them to be careful and it'll probably work out. Guiding them toward responsible interaction with it is going to be far more healthy, if they never interacted with any of it it'll likely just make them weird and a social outcast.
>>103212793>polish textWe don't have "mog" word in Polish though. We have "smog" but that's the same as in English.
>>103214479there are several instances of "mogÄ™", i was loose with my search
>>103214294The reason I brought up religious/conservative commune, is because then the kids are more likely to be in a circle of friends whose families feel similarly about smartphones/social media, instead of being that one outcast who's not allowed any of the fun stuff that all the peers engage in. I genuinely feel that no matter how strict with this stuff you might be as a parent, it's futile if the kid is gonna be constantly surrounded by things (and creatures) that go against your ideology. My strategy is not to shield the child from this type of society entirely, but to occasionaly and purposely showcase some of the smartphone addict ADHD creatures and say "do you want to end up like this?"
>>103211738It's basically 19th Century Christian fanfiction. They affirm the Bible (KJV only!!!) with caveats. They then have an entire book (The Book of Mormon) that obviously isn't recognized by other sects as canon scripture. It's very different from the mainline Protestant churches or the Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Churches, but they still LARP as Christians and talk about Jesus even if their Jesus seems to be a different entity than the one posited by more traditional Christian churches. I'd say Islam is more of its own thing while Mormonism is more akin to a Christian heresy. Jesus is still an elevated savior figure in Mormonism while Islam views him as just a good human prophet.

>>103215575mordor*
>>103214630If your ideology is that you consider technology to be categorically evil then that may be a viable path. As long as your kid agrees with the values of the commune and is content with staying within it, things might even work, you're basically choosing to be Amish at that point and it works for most of them. But if the kid doesn't agree with it or doesn't fit within those narrow social norms, you'll have hurt it more than helped it. I'm not saying it won't work, but I doubt it ultimately does the kid a net good compared to a responsible engagement with these things. As for the latter suggestion, I don't think that will work, you're essentially doing the same as dare tried to do with drugs, and while it seemed to have some effect, it was far from effective - because the kid will try it once or meet people who do and suddenly your extreme examples will be contrasted by normal people which makes you lose all credibility. Just be honest with them, show them the upsides and downsides, be honest about the severity of the risks and I think it can work. Granted I'm not American, maybe if more kids were actual ADHD zombies here I'd change my opinion, but while I do think most parents are far too relaxed with how their kids engage with social media, it's not that bad with young people I see.
>>103215575
>>103196638I had a DS in my hand rather than a phone in the years between 2006-2010I did read more books during that time, but after getting the internet in my hand in 2011 it was over for touching books outside of school. Its fucking wild to hear phones are basically allowed everywhere, anytime in schools.
>>103215724>If your ideology is that you consider technology to be categorically evilNo, I consider certain kinds of software to be categorically harmful. In particular, the kind where you put stuff "out there" and hope for peer approval. Nothing wrong with smartphones or direct messaging with individuals. I don't necessarily want to become a part of an "Amish" commune, but I don't want my kids to be the only ones in their peer group to have such restrictions either, because then what's the point.

They can still use a locked down with parental control shared family tablet at home.2. No direct access to YouTube and TickTock, they can still search the content through third part portals or apps (initially supervised only). This is to avoid creating compulsory scroll habits and shaping the algorithm on the children (and vice versa).3. Linux on the PC (if any) with a lower privileged user and kiosk'd settings (they can get a superuser one once they fulfill the smartphone prerequisite). This is to avoid as much as possible gatcha-like compulsory games (which often rely on anticheat) and setting a higher bar to overcome for the kid in order to get a particular game working unsupervised.I think this should be enough.

Kids have to figure out the boundaries of what they can and can't do to know where they are, otherwise we'd all be conformist drones and carbon copies of each other. I was born in 1998 and I started using 4chan in 2012My first smartphone was a Sony Xperia play in 2011, before that I used some shitty Samsung or Nokia phone. We used to call each others landline to arrange meet ups with friends. Before everyone and their mother got whatsapp we used to chat over Skype and MSN Messenger before that.More often than not you would just show up at the playground/parking lot/stroll around the neighborhood hoping there would be someone that you knew that you could hang out with. We used to play Minecraft over Hamachi with pirated clients. S4 League was also big. ROM sites and Emulators were also a big thing since everyone had a NDS, it was the hottest shit ever. As for porn, I was introduced to it by chance while I was looking for PS1 .iso files. There was that one gif with the anime angel girl that bounces her tits up and down (you know the one) and there was a landing page for some BDSM Hentai behind it. However, I also remember looking at the cover of porn magazines they had at gas stations to get my dick hard and ran home as fast as I could while my shit was still hard so I could jack my shota cock off. To be honest with you, things were not all that different.

>>103223461This is probbly what I'd do. My folks got me a nokia around age 12 and kept it topped up for about a month hoping I'd pay for it, but I just let it lapse because it cost a lot. After that I was never on a "family plan" or anything like that. Now I'm in my late 20's and most of my friends' phones are still paid for... it boggles my mind. I think just being exposed to the cost of gadgets the whole time kept me from seeing them as a given, like air to breath.>>103214294It's true, but that shit is utterly the norm. Friends and family I know with kids now- normal people, not weird rich fucks or people struggling in the trailer park- all do this. If the kids don't have their own phones or ipads, then there's at least a "kids' ipad" that they pretty much get to stim out on as much as they want. Keeps them out of the way. We're talking about 5 year olds here. At this point there have been many micro-scandals in which it was discovered that they were just watching horrific elsagate-type shit all day... wow, what a surprise. Each time there were vague attempts to roll it back, but after enough temper tantrums they went back to status quo pretty fast.
>>103235775I'm glad to hear that anon, it's a scary world sometimes, but I remain quite optimistic personally.>>103238874That sounds horrific - I suppose it depends on where you live too. Both my siblings have kids (ages 3-6) and they don't really watch any shows. The one exception was music videos for children's songs while brushing their teeth (the video being 3-5 mins long) and only with supervision. The older ones get to watch shows on our public kids TV channel now, but that's a total of 30 minutes twice a week. It's one science show and one arts and crafts show, both of which get them excited about nature and making stuff, they usually don't even want to watch on after the shows because they want to recreate some experiment or project themselves. Once they go to school they get their own phone, but it's an old dumb phone, you can call and that's it (not even SMS so far), just for emergencies. It can be done reasonably, but I can see how if you are in a country with a wildly different attitude things might change. In the end it's about character for the parents, you have to handle some annoying situations and some pain for your children's sake, giving them your phone at the restaurant so they sit still is tempting, but ultimately selfish and harms the kid.
