Please stop talking about DAWs! I was all ready to pick up Ableton Live this coming Black Friday but now I'm tempted by Reaper again.I love Live's racks and devices and ability to save and easily use bits and pieces from different Live sets just by dragging and dropping. The piano roll behavior kind of rubs me the wrong way, but I imagine that I could get used to it after using it a lot.Reaper seems great in how light weight it is and how you can customize shortcuts and mouse modifiers/etc to behave how you want it to. The notation view is also beneficial to me.>just get bothIt's not about the money, so that is a possibility, but the issue is having to spend time to get used to them. It would be better just to pick one and stick with it.

Album organizer here.Got this email yesterday on the account I upload videos from.Apparently until I upload an ID or a video of myself (which I absolutely don't intend to do) most of the links in the descriptions are fucked now and there's a limit on the number of videos I can upload in a day, so we're gonna have to take an additional day or two into account when setting the release/party date, in case it won't let me upload all of them in the same day.I might go and fix them somehow in the future, but I don't have time now so they'll stay fucked for the time being.
lmms chads, where we at?
i like only making nice melodies and beats for those. filling up the rest of the song seems pointless to me. the typical song structure sucks if doing instrumental. even listeners don't care about the filler. if you go to youtube and search for any edm song and check the seekbar, the main melody one is the one where people are repeating the song most.
>>103213866Aw, that's unfortunate. What even did you do to break community guidelines?
>>103214549Nothing that I know of. The channel has no community guidelines strikes and nothing relevant to this has happened in quite some time.Maybe they changed dome rule and now they're counting the few copyright violations (which just give any monetization to the copyright holder, though the videos aren't monetized) we got throughout the years, or that one hate speech violation in the third album for which I had to take a short course on who I'm allowed to offend and who's "protected", with a test at the end and everything lol.Or maybe it's just because it's not verified with a document or video. They say that if I behave for about 2 months it should be enough to reinstate the advanced features, so we'll see then.

>>103214447>even listeners don't care about the filler. if you go to youtube and search for any edm song and check the seekbar, the main melody one is the one where people are repeating the song most.yeah it has been a shitshow to have to rely on these degenerate high school dropouts to serve us whatever slop they cooked up in minutes in their DAW and for us listeners to have to sift through it and find the moderately entertaining parts. even world-renowned artists make a lot of songs that are duds, just shockingly bad taste and cringe with orders of magnitude less commercial success than their hits.
I've been wondering for a while now why there isn't yet a decent web-based online piano roll editor out there (along with audio playlist/sample editors) that's tailored for mobile users. BeepBox is nice and all, but it has its own limitations.>Why not just use FL Studio Mobile?I'd rather not pay for apps or install anything. I want it to be instantly accessible and open-source, to export melodies in different formats (e.g. for bytebeat (JSON), MIDI, music sheets, plain text), to play your own synths (audio signal node processors, optionally WASM for performance), maybe even to edit MOD tracker files.>Can't you just try to write your own?I don't even know where to start exactly, and there aren't any guides. I get confused reading other people's source codes, how notes are supposed to be rendered, played and handled, how to deal with events, or what data structure I should use. I've never written a proper piano roll editor before, only something that vaguely resembled it that was specifically designed for 4-channel voice (but my decade(s)-old computer died so I lost those files).inb4 "fuck off phoneposter" or something
>>103216217Also this phone has no screen recorder built into it so I can't record anything I've made, unless I use a third-party app for that, or that I would have to export the entire song as a large MIDI file.

would this count as 90s techno? I have a tape emulator on my master for analog warmth and all most of presets have "trance" in the name.https://vocaroo.com/14O5e53Fdej6
>>103222218>would this count as 90s techno?>all most of presets have "trance" in the name. Are you trying to do a trance track or techno? To me, It sounds more trance-ish, so I'll assume you meant to type trance. If not, ignore the rest:I like it, has good layering and mostly the right kind of trance sounds (but maybe a bit too modern for 90s). Could probably use a bit more melody though. Also, I think the bpm should be slightly higher to be trance, a little above 130. And, to me it sounds like the structure is a little off. Idk how close everyone is trying to get to the typical trance structure, but this starts off a bit too gradually, drums should come in a earlier and the first section should be longer with more layering of different melodic sounds. The middle section could be even more stripped down. The buildup from that is good through, and I like the last section a lot. Right now, it sounds somewhere between progressive house and trance.Full disclosure, I'm not an expert or producer, I just listen to a lot of trance.
Hi, if I have a VST that runs at 48000hz but is upsampled to 96000hz by my DAW will the latency be of 48000hz or 96000hz? assuming that sample rate is the same in both cases, of course.

Anyone still trying to do this all solo should find musicians/producers/songwriters/whatever in their area to jam with. You will improve far faster than if you stick with production solo, and you might even make some connections to the industry along the way.People were saying shit like>but what about Skrillex or DeadMau5, they do it all themselves! Not realizing that even they collaborated often, on top of getting a lot of practice in DJ work. Don't try to be a one-man-army, you'll never get anything done.

>>103232100Sure, you're most of the way there.Just keep it simple. Trance music is mostly layers of basic melodic elements (usually arpeggio based), and the tracks are typically split into three sections:1 the opening where the elements are introduced, often on their own, but gradually layered up to build tension;2 then the breakdown with maybe two or three of the elements but no or very little drums;3 then a buildup to the big drop where all of the elements come together at once. The key with that structure is creating a feeling of buildup and then 'release' (either into a breakdown or into a drop).(Though if you're making a "radio edit", that structure can get shrunk quite a bit.)These are some good examples of the flowhttps://youtu.be/_6KFq8s2fgghttps://youtu.be/Setnx9fFu-A (though this isn't 90s, and it also has two breakdowns)

Artifacts mean that you are (perhaps unknowingly) crowding your mix with unwanted tones / frequencies. Many popular wavetable synthesizers are astonishingly bad at suppressing artifacts - even on a high-quality setting some create artifacts as high as -36 dB to -60 dB (level difference between fundamental on artifacts) which is well audible, and furthermore often dampening the highest wanted audible frequencies in the process, to try and suppress this unwanted sound. In Serum, the native-mode (default) playback of oscillators operates with an ultra high-precision resampling, yielding an astonishingly inaudible signal-to-noise (for instance, -150 dB on a sawtooth played at 1 Khz at 44100)! This requires a lot of calculations, so Serum’s oscillator playback has been aggressively optimized using SSE2 instructions to allow for this high-quality playback without taxing your CPU any more than the typical (decent quality) soft synth already does. Load up Serum and we think you’ll be able to notice both what you hear (solid high frequencies, extending flat all the way up to the limits of hearing) as well as what you don’t hear (no unwanted mud or aliasing gibberish- just good, clean sound).VI labs modern D gets pretty much universal acclaim from pianists including ones that play steinway pianos irl and it runs on the UVI falcon/workstation engine

and just generally you can apply a lot of effects to vocals to use them more like a musical instrument that fits within the song

>>103237895ok tyvm, it doesn't have the instant wow factor but maybe it's not a fair comparison since they're dry. i was going to play some UVI falcon presets but my ableton 12.1 R2R installation is broken, it loses activation and then throws errors when trying to reactivate. i'm going to switch to reaper anyway.
>>103238338This. If you want to make serious music get a computer.. If you want to goof around get a groovebox/drum machine/sampler. If you want to go modular, get a behringer EDGE, Crave, and a Strega synced to your groovebox and see if you like it.

All this talk of grooveboxes, which one would you choose; MC-101 or Circuit Tracks?
>>103219028>someone talk me out of taking the hardware pill. my wishlist has grown into the dozens.I've been getting into hardware for two years after using DAW for 10 with moderate success on my projects. Now I'm fucking old and just having fun, too busy to seriously make tracks so I just jam on a loop for 20 minutes and then back to family shit I would say that hardware basically sucks if you're trying to do anytime modern and the cost is absurd and retarded. Hardware in 2024 is selling toys to aimless childless hipsters and geriatrics. What you want is a hardware machine that will inspire you with new techniques that you being back to daw. Until you've tried to make a drum machine entertaining on its lonesome, you don't know drum sequencing. Check out "909" workout on YouTubeBasically you want something to goof around with in the couch and maybe bounce stems from, nothing else. Bounce your stems through a broken 4 track or analog guitar pedal if you want "hardware sound" it's bullshit. Biggest hits right now are M8, Syntakt, MPC. I like the Deluge and electribe line. Imo.Also all the classic rack hardware is mostly trash for rich old collectors. Don't look for deals there it's overPioneer FX boxes are the best also
>>103239333Circuit tracks is so simplistic I don't think it will hold your interest. Mc101 is supposed to be super menu-divey but highly capable. >>103241057lmao sound selection is one of the main parts of a producer's job, you don't even need that fancy of a composition once the production quality is in place. people keep falling for the myth that successful artists are impossibly good at singing or have some secret mozart tier composition tricks. amateurs can sing a song and play guitar or whatever and it will never do numbers commercially without being polished with more production elements and mixing and masterings.
like most EDM tracks are built around simple arpeggio/sequence loops with different filters and such, the producers are rarely classically trained
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weeI1G46q0othis is a top tier hit song based on a single bass pluck sound design. of course the featured artists are going to attract an audience but you don't get billions of streams without the song being good in some way. but /prod/ anons won't even acknowledge that it's a good song or that it's a good sound design so they can't even begin to learn.
>>103244741You have to realize that very few listeners are also classically trained so your efforts are going to fall on deaf ears.also EDM is dance music not sitting in your smoke room and jerk off to yourself about how cultured you are.
>>103245038that's my point in response to >>103241057>Music theory and musical composition matter much morelike sabrina carpenter - please please please has a key change which a youtuber pointed out as a genius move and that's the type of thing that rick beato would jerk off to but it's not rocket science to implement a key change in your song if that's what you want
a lot of the classic hit songs were shaped by the instruments/gear that the artists/producers had access to and in this modern era the pros are still using a lot of hardware or virtual analog pluginshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g5KEjhw_HQ

Is there a rackmount compressor worth owning these days if I want to compress a mix of synths and drum machines? The synth people have 1010 Bluebox, 4ch mixer with built in comp and recording. Vital “delay” (envelopes and lfos)Why the FLIP aren’t those syncable? In fact why is that such a rare function on envelopes in the first place? You know what had that over a decade ago? Awful. But anyway that sync…No actually I DONT want that extra thing in my pad to start happening after X seconds, I need it halfway through the BAR wtf.Fuck you Matt tytel and fix all of the inconsistent syntax you are literally RUINING VITAL
>>103254572It's much much closer though. I think if you could simplify or replace the main repeating buzz (sawtooth?) sound, then that would mostly do it sound-wise. It's the only part doesn't really sound "90s trance" to me (though some of the other sounds are definitely "late 90s" trance).Structure-wise, you've got the formula basically correct, but the proportions still seem a bit off: the opening could go a bit longer before the first breakdown starts 0:22, and the second breakdown at 1:18 goes a bit long relative to the rest of the track (and could also still be stripped down a bit more).Though, feel free to ignore my structure notes since I imagine you're probably not trying to make a standard 7+ min "extended mix". Just make sure to keep building tension, and then release, which I think you mostly got right. For example, here's the "original mix"/"extended" version and "radio edit" version of Sandstormhttps://youtu.be/5Rk8u2FTaG0https://youtu.be/jWMTJ0oepCUYou can hear how he obviously cut a lot out in the radio mix, but each section still successfully builds up and then releases into the next. On a related note: also notice the difference between the two 'drop's after the breakdowns. The first one (2:46 in extended, 0:31 in radio) has slightly less going on than the second and final one (5:00, 2:31). In between, new sounds got introduced (mainly that background bass in the second breakdown), and so they all come together at the end.One final minor note: your drops after the breakdowns could use a bit more... something, probably some kind of whooshing noise. Trance producers love those fucking whooshing noises.
>>103254572Idk how 90s this is but I think it sounds nice enough to be worth messing with a bit more. The main thing that came to mind was that it could use some filtering and drop outs throughout
