I love Live's racks and devices and ability to save and easily use bits and pieces from different Live sets just by dragging and dropping. The piano roll behavior kind of rubs me the wrong way, but I imagine that I could get used to it after using it a lot.
Reaper seems great in how light weight it is and how you can customize shortcuts and mouse modifiers/etc to behave how you want it to. The notation view is also beneficial to me.

I've been wondering for a while now why there isn't yet a decent web-based online piano roll editor out there (along with audio playlist/sample editors) that's tailored for mobile users. BeepBox is nice and all, but it has its own limitations.

Are you trying to do a trance track or techno? To me, It sounds more trance-ish, so I'll assume you meant to type trance. If not, ignore the rest:
I like it, has good layering and mostly the right kind of trance sounds (but maybe a bit too modern for 90s). Could probably use a bit more melody though. Also, I think the bpm should be slightly higher to be trance, a little above 130. And, to me it sounds like the structure is a little off. Idk how close everyone is trying to get to the typical trance structure, but this starts off a bit too gradually, drums should come in a earlier and the first section should be longer with more layering of different melodic sounds. The middle section could be even more stripped down. The buildup from that is good through, and I like the last section a lot. Right now, it sounds somewhere between progressive house and trance.
Full disclosure, I'm not an expert or producer, I just listen to a lot of trance.

Someone should just write an online DAW at this point without using any bloated JavaScript frameworks/libraries so you wouldn't even need to bother installing anything. Sure, you're most of the way there.
Just keep it simple. Trance music is mostly layers of basic melodic elements (usually arpeggio based), and the tracks are typically split into three sections:
1 the opening where the elements are introduced, often on their own, but gradually layered up to build tension;
2 then the breakdown with maybe two or three of the elements but no or very little drums;
3 then a buildup to the big drop where all of the elements come together at once.
The key with that structure is creating a feeling of buildup and then 'release' (either into a breakdown or into a drop).
(Though if you're making a "radio edit", that structure can get shrunk quite a bit.)

I would say that hardware basically sucks if you're trying to do anytime modern and the cost is absurd and retarded. Hardware in 2024 is selling toys to aimless childless hipsters and geriatrics.

What you want is a hardware machine that will inspire you with new techniques that you being back to daw. Until you've tried to make a drum machine entertaining on its lonesome, you don't know drum sequencing. Check out "909" workout on YouTube

Basically you want something to goof around with in the couch and maybe bounce stems from, nothing else. Bounce your stems through a broken 4 track or analog guitar pedal if you want "hardware sound" it's bullshit.

Biggest hits right now are M8, Syntakt, MPC. I like the Deluge and electribe line. Imo.

Also all the classic rack hardware is mostly trash for rich old collectors. Don't look for deals there it's over

No, most reverb plugins have a low-cut setting where you tell it what frequency to not put reverb on.

Is there a rackmount compressor worth owning these days if I want to compress a mix of synths and drum machines?

The synth people have 1010 Bluebox, 4ch mixer with built in comp and recording. There's also the 6ch OTO Bebe Cherie with nice preamp distortion and comp. It seems like rack compression is a dead format since computers can do so much more for cheap

Then later on you say, "you know, that is a really nice compressor". The super nice mode has some fancy things happening. However it is set up to run as a board master insert, so you if aren't into that I totally understand.

It's much much closer though. I think if you could simplify or replace the main repeating buzz (sawtooth?) sound, then that would mostly do it sound-wise. It's the only part doesn't really sound "90s trance" to me (though some of the other sounds are definitely "late 90s" trance).
Structure-wise, you've got the formula basically correct, but the proportions still seem a bit off: the opening could go a bit longer before the first breakdown starts 0:22, and the second breakdown at 1:18 goes a bit long relative to the rest of the track (and could also still be stripped down a bit more).
Though, feel free to ignore my structure notes since I imagine you're probably not trying to make a standard 7+ min "extended mix". Just make sure to keep building tension, and then release, which I think you mostly got right.

You can hear how he obviously cut a lot out in the radio mix, but each section still successfully builds up and then releases into the next. On a related note: also notice the difference between the two 'drop's after the breakdowns. The first one (2:46 in extended, 0:31 in radio) has slightly less going on than the second and final one (5:00, 2:31). In between, new sounds got introduced (mainly that background bass in the second breakdown), and so they all come together at the end.
One final minor note: your drops after the breakdowns could use a bit more... something, probably some kind of whooshing noise. Trance producers love those fucking whooshing noises.
