Why isn't OPENSUSE considered the recommended distro for 2025?

POV: you just installed OpenSUSE with default configs

How did you screenshot that? Fake.

OpenSuSE is the white man's Linux distro.

It's from The Linux Experiment's video but the exact same thing happened to me when I tried installing OpenSUSE.

No good reason, its unironically the only distro I use for any purpose.

A pile of rocks has better updates than Debian

Just fuck you. I started Linux in 1997. I used anything from Mandrake, Debian, SuSE, Redhat, Slack, Gentoo to OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD.

>>103206984
I've been using it as my daily driver for a couple of years but I'm somewhat disappointed with the quality of updates this year. The upgrade to KDE 6 was rough and there was also a long period where I couldn't upgrade my NVIDIA drivers because the available versions ran like ass.

Oy very, this is worse than I thought. Looks like the company gets run by liberal Nazis. It's Volkslinux and the Fuhrer would definitely love it.

I use opensuse tumbleweed XFCE on my laptop and KDE on my desktop. I love it. It is the only distro that lets me easily setup snapper btfs with luks out of the box. OPI is based, Yast is based. It feels so professional and smooth compared to every distro I have tried.

why even care about the political views of the developers. I use software that does its job. doesn't matter to me if the developers are nazis, radical centrists or communists. Not that they make any value off me anyway.

When did you realize your distro of choice hardly matters and you can get 99% the same experience on any of them by just installing what you want?
>>
>>103222099
Untrue. There are hardware incompatibility.
Specially with old pcs.
>>
>>103221452
Those are technical reasons
>>
>>103222672

Hardware compatibility is dependant on the kernel version. If your hardware is outdated get a distro with an outdated kernel or build one yourself for your distro of choice. Being scared of compiling a kernel isn't a reason not to use a certain distro. Especially if that distro comes with lots of tooling and documentation that makes it easy to compile a kernel. You kids wouldn't have survived in the 90s.

>openSUSE had the xz backdoor, Fedora didn't

Tumbleweed had the xz backdoor for a short period of time because in Tumbleweed you get the newest versions of software that turn out to be stable enough to run in a Linux distro. That's the whole point of Tumbleweed. If you don't need the newest stuff just install leap. After it came out that there's a backdoor in xz the SUSE security guys immediately replaced that version of xz. Fedora also had the backdoor in version 40 Beta 2 but Fedora isn't a rolling release distro and not that many people run Fedora beta versions.

>>
>>103224555
That's right
>>
>>103224555
Arch and Gentoo also shipped the backdoored xz but weren't vulnerable to it because of their configuration. Tumbleweed was basically the only non-beta distro that was vulnerable to it.
>>
>>103225213
> Arch and Gentoo also shipped the backdoored xz but weren't vulnerable to it because of their configuration.

It depends on your configuration of Arch or Gentoo. If you patched openssh to support systemd notification like for example Debian or Tumbleweed your Arch/Gentoo system was affected. I don't know why you assclowns try to use this to make OpenSUSE look bad. Anyone who runs a publicly accessible server on a bleeding edge rolling release distro literally deserves to get hacked. Why would you do that? Just use something stable and secure like Leap for god's sake. This was a nation state cyber attack on OpenSSH and if there wasn't a guy working for Microsoft who had a timing regression test that failed because the attackers tried to hide their payload from debuggers by slow dynamic symbol resolving using dlsym() literally any Linux distribution would have been affected eventually.
>>
>>103226513
The backdoor literally only enabled itself on dpkg and rpm-based systems.

>>103206984
Opensusy
>>
>>103226716

They clearly targeted Debian/Ubuntu, Redhat and SUSE because those are the big Linux distros that the important servers run. They are professionals and didn't want to risk getting detected only because they infected some tranny Gentoo/Arch setup. Using that as an argument it like advocating security by obscurity.

That's correct but all RPM package managers suck.
>>
>>103230750
Which is a good thing, whenever I use Arch I hate the package manager syntax. It's infinitely better to just be able to type "install" or "remove" or "search" or "update" than spending 20 minutes to read the manpages to figure out which random letters fix things and which random letters break things in the whole
