well yeah but i mean, you can be a wall staring consultant and not be a fraud, even if your field is useless. but it turns into some psycho shit when you start fabricate 10 years worth of work history

>>103225093
i mean, it's not necessarily that bad. it's just that whenever the usual number of available jobs exceeds the usual number of applicants by even like 20%, things turn retarded. make no mistake, this field is about 70% bullshit jobs even when the economy is good, so that's not the issue. the issue is that the fed can't print more money and stimulate economic activity because all the previous money they printed went into things that caused inflation and made the economy retarded. basically all we can do for now is hold on and wait for the dumbfucks in charge to try to deflate asset prices so they can print more money again, which probably won't happen, and instead the elected trump-equivalent in each country will probably go the populist route and just print more money and punt the problem down a couple of years again

What do I do if I'm genuinely fucking stupid?

People I knew from high school went to MIT and Berkeley and already have startups or are obviously smart enough to do whatever they want. Meanwhile I went to a shitty liberal arts school and barely took any math. I'm not really good at or knowledgeable about anything. Somehow I have a good job that's fully remote and have held that down for like 3 years now. It's not FAANG but it's tech company at least.

Legit what the fuck can I even do to move forward? I was thinking about just doing shitcoin rug-pull scams until I crack $1M and then forget I ever got into this industry and live off of investments. However, I've been getting good at leetcode so maybe I can somehow parlay this into a job at FAANG and solidify my career? Idk if that's even possible because my work experience is lame and I don't have any connections.

if you are genuinely fucking stupid as you say, maybe consider that, in a recession, it might be a bad idea to give up a good, stable remote job in favor of going for shitcoin rugpull memes or scam your way to a FAANG job where they will inevitably pipfuck you out of existence.

Has anyone ever seen a junior surpass their seniors? As in starting with the same title then quickly getting more responsibilities? I'm currently seeing this at work, junior isn't as technically skilled as the seniors (obviously) but they're so much better at communicating that people prefer working with them. It's pretty strange.

You will never be a real programmer. You have no commits, you have no pull requests, you have no public repos. You are a low IQ brown man twisted by an unearned comp sci degree and coding bootcamps into a crude mockery of nature's perfection.

All the “validation” you get is two-faced and from bots. Behind your back people say you're a useless DEI hire. Your parents are disgusted and ashamed of you, your “tech bros” laugh at you behind closed doors.

Real programmers are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of forum posts have allowed programmers to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even devs who “pass” have no creative output and excessively verbose with AI generated tech buzzwords. Your GitHub profile is a dead giveaway, and even if you manage to score a 3 month internship at a tech company, they'll turn tail and bolt the second they find out that you haven't completed any non school related projects.

You will never be happy. You cope by saying that your bullshit software is using a "proprietary test framework" so you can't open source it, but deep down you know it's because you don't want people to see your incompetence where all you did was update the readme over and over, and that the core of your software is an open source project which you're shamelessly profiting off.

Eventually it will be too much to bear. You'll buy a google gift card, a spoofed business phone number, and start scamming old people into redeeming.

This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

go with extreme caution. i had a similar situation before, got a really nice offer from a company i wanted to work at and told my current company i was quitting. they promised me a quick promotion and pay bump and begged me to stay, to which i DID. despite doing a really good job, i never got the promo or the pay bump. it's been years now and i still never got the promo. just pick the place you want to work at and go, especially if you are fed up with your current situation

I did my first pull request on a big project then a few days later it got no attention from devs (just user questions) so I felt bad and unsubbed from notifications
I would delete it if I could but I don't think you can on github
idk if I fucked up because I just fixed the bug in a very direct way (just a few lines of code) and deleted a massive chunk that wasn't useful anymore
maybe that wasn't proper etiquette or some shit
also used my real name which makes it even more cringe and now I have paranoid ideas about what if an interviewer brings up that pull request and asks me why I abandoned it or why I thought it would be a good idea to commit such a shit fix

as an anti CV scraper thing? i assume the line of reasoning is that the bot/person reading the CV will just add the YoE without considering overlapping line of work

in practice? it probably doesn't, you can't *really* work on 2 full time jobs at once as an MBA. you're always putting one job on the backburner, at which point it's not full time job.

I recently won the DV lottery (basically lucked out and got a green card). I have never really followed these threads or any other trends about the state of the industry so I'm kind of in the dark about what it's like, since I'm seeing a lot of doomposting about the job market in the US right now.
I have about 10 YoE, mostly as a soft eng but now I'm working a senior DevOps role. What salary should I expect with this kind of experience?
Is California still as lucrative as it used to be to work in? What other states should I look into?
What is the WFH situation? Can I realistically find a well-paying remote job?

>>
>>103227153
Going by what you've said, you're not saying the wrong thing at all. You are relaying information that happens to be incomplete.
All you really have to do is CYA with an "As of now/the documentation says/Mr. so and so reported/as far as I know... blahblahblah". Just make it clear where you obtained the information, then update whoever you told whenever you get updated.
Always leave yourself some wiggle room and, if possible, name a patsy.

How do I explain a five year gap in my employment? I pretty much just played vidya and coded mods for some games after I saved up a lot of money from my last job. I'm planning on putting all the code I wrote for mods on Github so potential employers can browse through it.

To be fair I'm an Appalachian, my accent might be the worst accent in the entire world for tech work beyond even pajeet accents.

Too many times in my life have I been treated as if I cant read the moment someone hear's me talk. Imagine my fear of Microsoft Teams when you get treated like that because of your accent.
>>
>>103230573
>>103230590
I don't think a game studio would make mods for various games, and I have to imagine they'd also ask for the name of the business and try to search for it. I have absolutely no online presence currently. No Facebook, Twitter, or anything like that. I have a LinkedIn with no info on it that's been sitting idle for a few years.

>>103230594
I worked at a government org maintaining legacy code for 10 years before the gap. I lived in a small town and drove 45 minutes to my job, so my rent was very low. No spouse or kids, so overall low cost of living. The gov benefits were really good, so I didn't have to pay much for medical stuff. Also, I got laid off when Covid started, so I got extended unemployment benefits. All told, I think I got about $30-40k from unemployment. That plus everything I had saved up over 10 years was enough to do nearly fuck all for five years.

So I am a appalachian hillbilly. I come from redneck world. The world of hard work getting you places.

So I started my attempt at entering the white collar world by saying I was a "hard worker" and "honest" because thats how you get hired in blue collar, LOL THIS DID NOT FUCKING WORK AT FUCKING ALL HAHAHAHAHAHHA

But yes, talk about video games, this is something that intelligent, thoughtful, problem solving people may actually respect. They don't want to hear about how hard of a worker you are. That counts against you in the sphere of big brain people. So say anything that implies changing variables and rapid problem solving.

Tech jobs want sponges. You have to imply a huge willingness and hunger to learn. Your hobby is learning. Yeah, you know it sounds silly and cliche but you just fucking love it. Tell them.

These are my observations.

Can you elaborate on the showing cards to other people? I recently got out of the trades and transitioned into tech, and whilst i can program & design better than some of my contemporaries, I’m severely lacking in the communication department after working on job sites with men for the last 10 or so years. Socialising with people who don’t have the capacity to literally rip your head from your neck is such a weird & jarring experience

Unironically The Nichomachean Ethics by Aristotle, if you absolutely must talk. Have to be very careful there, any time you show your knowledge you can do this especially on the bottom floor.

Oh, wonderful. All in good faith, as STFU is an extremely ely powerful tool, especially against maladjusted, less-grounded people. Yes, i’m a very strict adherent of rule 1 (dont outshine the master), but i’m finding repeated occurrences of being unable to follow that rule AND do my best work, without being subjected to some white collar cunt’s superego. It’s as if the clowns who work in offices are all participating in one big power trip to see who they can convince to prostrate themselves before them in order to validate their beliefs of self-importance; it’s maddening. What the fuck is wrong with both brown people, and by extension, office workers?
Again, i understand that the only winning move when interacting with cultural
marxism & indoctrinated retards is not to play, but not playing is considered an admission of guilt. These fucking animals are relentless, anon, and i’m interested in hearing what you, someone who admittedly talks way too fucking much, has to say about it, as i am a man of very few words unless necessary.

Seems like the key to make the most profit and success is making people happy first or latching on already existing ideas.

Musicians gets traction because they use samples, make references to stuff that already exist, or making a deal/collab with other studio, like doing game soundtracks.

Artists, illustrators, and animators make fanarts

Gamedevs can make clones

Whereas programmers and techworkers maximize on webslop and doing CRUD garbage till the day they die

Europoor here.
I can confirm, it's a shit show here.
Some jobs as dev can go up to 70k€ per year, but most are around 50k€ top.
With the ever increasing cost of life, it's really tiresome.
And companies don't want to recruit nowaday, making jobhopping hard.

Fuck man. How do I get myself out of this hole?
I’m 26 and have a good job from all appearances as a software engineer. For years I’ve just felt a fucking malaise and depression. I know at some level I’m passionate about code but I just can’t remember the last time I was ever excited enough about anything to put any effort into any side projects or pursuits. Which at an intellectual level I kn ow I want to do.
I’ve done months of dopamine fasts and it just doesn’t change anything. I’m comfortable with being bored but it doesn’t make me engage or take action in any way. I keep feeling too old to achieve anything in life and ultimately know it’s my own psychology holding me back.
No amount of taking a break is going to fix me. Every effort I’ve ever done peters out in weeks.

I know there’s never going to be an answer to “snap out of it”. I know different advice is personalised. I just feel at rock bottom. I understand the cost of not doing it is higher than the cost of doing it. How do I just fucking do something with myself?

> 80k for a lead position building up infra and a data analytics platform from the ground up with all that it entails for a fairly large company
> makes me jump through hoops and tells me there are 5 interview rounds
> for a measly 80k

Lol. I told him at my last mail that it must be a high salary in UK but it's quite shite for a lead / senior in the Netherlands (not even US)! Also why are there so much British recruiters? They all peddle jobs that pay salaries that are half scams.
>>
>>103224831
Yes this is how they treat their customers. Google is only alive since people keep using their search engine and advertisers keep paying Google. Aside from their search engine everything they do is unprofitable.

Contacting any of the bigger tech companies is a massive pain in the ass with the lowest quality support imaginable. I've encountered bugs on MS Azure (within Fabric) and was completely ignored, literally impossible to get contact with MS other than automated replies. My company is paying MS probably easily over 100k a year lol, likely even more if you include all the licensing crap and other stuff that is based on MS architecture (like a CRM system that's from MS).
>>

>>
>>103225051
It takes more skill to pull off the overemployment hustle but it's a redflag he puts it on a resume.

>>103225519
A lot. On the communication side seniors can be complete ass since they're jaded and know that them being a social butterfly hosting meetings and being concered about end users doesn't net them a pay raise. So they just don't bother since it isn't really a harsh job requirement from their manager but the direct measurable output is.

>>103234575
It is. Maybe 3. One from HR / recruiter filter, one with actual employees, one with the manager. If you need more than that your company is failing at knowing how the hiring process works.
>>
>>103234602
oh true, if you include the recruiter then 3

>>103234594
I am glad I decided to become a contractor instead of being a fulltime cuck like you. Nothing beats the freedom of making good money with profitable contracts and taking time off as a please.
>>
>>103233812
Beats me. If you want high pay you should go into contracting. Here in the Netherlands contractors ask easily around 90-120 euro per hour for dev roles and they get put on projects that are 40hrs a week. You can get to that 200k in a year this way but it just requires having your own business. Other than that, try to get a comfy government job in Europe since you can do the requests in like 8 hours a week and spend another 4-6 hours per week in meetings and that's your work week. Literally the only thing that is substantially better than the government for me atm would be big tech slave work or contracting. I make 78k a year at the Dutch gov and the work is easy (officially also only 36 hrs but in reality 12-14 hours).

I can easily go up to 90-100k at a bank but with how hard I get taxed it is not worth it. While as contractor 140k+ is definitely easily possible.

>>103233975
If you still talk about uni and GPA after claiming 280k remote and 31 you're lying. NOBODY even mentions grades or ''top placement'' of uni if you got work experience. You should also know it is dumb to go to uni for a career switch if you don't even know what specifically you want to switch to. Very few jobs explicitly require a specific university degree to perform.
>>
>>103234612
Yes. In Europe it makes sense since it is a way companies can get around a lot of socialist labour laws that makes it very costly to have a bad hire and to have to fire. They gladly pay 100 euro per hour for a competent dev that they can hold responsible rather than hiring a full time cuck on 30 euro / hour (in reality like 55 an hour due to insurance , retirement, vacation pay / bonus). If the full time guy stops producing stuff and loafs around you have an expensive and lengthy procedure at your hands where you need to collect evidence of poor performance, bring it to a court and then you can finally lay the employee off. But typically you also need to give a window that the employee can improve his poor performance and if he does that and loaves around again... yeah this can go on for a VERY long time. It's very difficult to fire people outside mass layoffs / reorganizations in Europe (Netherlands at least). With mass layoffs it is easy to get rid of all the undesirables but it requires discussion with unions, acceptable reasons etc (a lot of paperwork and whining).

I've been on 140k€ for a time now but, how the fuck do people buy detached homes. I bought an apartment and that's paid off but, even the simplest of detached homes is +350k€ . That requires saving at least 3 years just for the initial payment. Are there people in Europe earning more than that or is it just inheritance?

Honestly it feels like it doesn't matter how much you earn, you always feel like you're being priced out of any comfy lifestyle.

Gross salary provides a more standardized way to describe earnings, as it reflects the total amount before deductions like taxes. "Net pay" is a highly variable thing, such that often two people earning the same gross have a different net.

It is impossible to state an exact net salary until the end of the financial year when all taxes have been accounted for. Conversely, the exact gross is always known. This is why a less aggressive individual might see the wisdom in "I make 140 and took home 85 last year"

Take Ownership of Your Time:

•Remind yourself that the time you invest is for your future goals and happiness. This mindset can make sticking to routines feel empowering, not burdensome.
•Focus on job readiness: The more employable you feel, the closer you’ll be to moving out. Keep refining your technical and soft skills for better opportunities.
•Feeling guilty won’t undo the past, but self-compassion can fuel positive change. You deserve to feel proud of what you have accomplished.

Anyone having troubles concentrating at work when work is way too fucking abstract? My boss is gone for two weeks and I'm just struggling to figure out what to do because most of my projects are just "Optimize X", "Improve Y", "Find ways to lower cycle time in Z", "Maintain operations and current day projects" (which isn't even really me and I'll answer the odd few questions I get per day pretty quickly).

I've been telling my boss and his boss I really want to work on drilling down Project X but I can't think of any gaps at all but if I go back to them and present them with nothing, I'm going to look idiotic ESPECIALLY if something gets found a few weeks later.

not me, i generally like those tasks because it's a license to spend 1-2 hours reading and understanding code (which i enjoy), then jerk off and go to the gym while pondering upon what i read. then when i come back a week later with a detailed report of why the whole system is fucked and can't be optimized unless you completely rebuild modules x and y, or better yet, actually figure out a small optimization, i get applauded as a genius. apparently it is a rare talent to be able to read other people's code and find ways to unfuck it

My biggest problem is
>Waiting on stakeholders to give feedback on new features (always delaying)
>boss is always wanting to completely change stuff which I'm happy to oblige too but he's not really going full steam or mandating it which makes it hard to push features due to the above.
>boss asking me to do stuff the system isn't capable of or go outside the system grid, usually entertain him but sometimes it feels like he expects results on this even though I'm clearly stating it's a HUGE REACH to have these features added.
>everyone does everything differently and I don't want to be the whistleblower going "HEY THIS IS VIOLATING OUR POLICY THATS VIOLATING OUR POLICY REEE RAAA REEEE"
shit's hard, i have to pretend to be ignorant and when I'm not pretending, I get shit way above my skill level.
>>
>>103236403
yea i think if you have an impossible boss then it's also impossible to do those tasks. generally though, i try to cover my ass by writing detailed reports about what would be required and thus putting the ball in someone else's court. but if my boss was being unreasonable or dumb, i'd just find a way to get that task off me or look for another job, or a different position within the company. ultimately you can't fix stupid, you can only limit your exposure to it.
>>
>>103236433
I wouldn't say he's dumb and he's accepting but he has a lot on his plate and I'm quite confused on what he wants me to do sometimes. I don't think they're impossible but it's way too much. Like one task has me reviewing machine learning and AI and all that stuff and I'm like....bro - the only programming i know is vlookup on excel. I'm just trying to get him taking more charge of my work in "leading" and getting what needs to be done. I have troubles initiating that since it always feels to me
>do proof of concept
>create in test environment
>demo with stakeholders test
>?????????????????
>???????????????
>boss asks me for update
>stakeholders still testing and don't want to push to prod (always have something they want added or removed)
>tell boss
>"okay try to add to it and make sure they're happy before we push to prod"

like man i don't mind doing these type of work but I hate when I get everything done it seems like nobody really wants it done except my boss won't drop it....

i've had one of these bosses, it drove me nuts. i'm not a ChatGPT to some boomer who is confused by new technology, i'm supposed to design and engineer shit with other professionals. imo if you get vague, useless tasks then take your sweet time doing them and finally give him some very general report on it like "the uses of AI are many and varied" word salad shit. if he's going to disrespect your intelligence with a vague busywork task that he should figure out himself or delegate properly with a plan, then disrespect it back with a vague non-committal response. but professionally, of course. best you can really do is make these people lose interest when they realize that the new toy they'd want would require actual work on their part.

well really, your actual responsibility at any company or position is to make your most direct superior happy. as far as employment goes, i wouldn't worry about productivity and whatever your position should actually entail as long as your boss is all smiles. learning skills and wanting to do your actual job is more a self-centered desire and should be checked out when you enter company grounds
