Kek chrome will die so fast. The last antitrust shit with payments for search engine preference already put Firefox on suicide watch. Also why is the DoJ not taking down M$, or companies like Oracle or whatever?
>>
>>103230526
I doubt it. Chrome will probably become a foundation like Firefox, that won't mean it will die but it will mean Chromium will be much more prevalent since Blink is a standard already and it will be much more susceptible to influence from other companies to do dumb things. Also will leave room for other browser engines to emerge. If Chrome or Blink dies, a fork of it will probably get the marketshare.

Ok and what about Apple and Safari?
This claim of a monopoly on a free and open source browser that basically runs everywhere relevant is pretty insane, but the DoJ is literally peak government: doing everything to cause chaos with shitty 20th century laws that favor a specific class of people.

It's formatted like a Bloomberg terminal news entry, so the source is immediately obvious, you'd know that if you weren't a pleb
>>
>>103231063
but if you're honest there isn't a big disadvantage or unique selling point google search has, other than "set as standard" and most people don't change it. I use DuckDuckGo since some time, it is better and worse in some regards but overall not that different that I would switch back.

What is a bigger problem is the whole ecosystem the average google user is in. They know all your searches on google. They know what you watch on youtube. They track your browsing behaivour with chrome and trackers on websites. They know what you've payed with your phone on google pay. They analyze the images you've uploaded into their cloud. They know where you drive with android auto.

But it is minimal efford to at least use some alternatives to these google options. But most people don't even think about what data they give away to google/microsoft/apple at this point.

A browser I don't use, tied to a search engine with low quality results... How does this affect me? Better question is why does the government care when the browser has to be installed by the user? Nobody is forced to use it.
>>
>>103230042
Even if that were true, what does it even mean?

I'm sure Chrome is loss leader anyways

Do they force to sell the browser engine (which is unlikely)?

If yes, can't they just fork it and spin up another team to write it?

If not even that, isn't Chrome basically a thin UI of which dime a dozen exist?

This will throw a spanner in Google's works for all of two weeks, as they build a notChrome distribution of the browser rendering engine.

chrome has a large user base which won't disappear overnight and there's easy ways to monetise those users e.g. branded VPNs or sponsored shortcuts.
they'll have enough money to continue development, but not enough money to build google-tracker features like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privacy_Sandbox

>pushed to sell a project that costs them hundreds of millions each year to develop
How is this supposed to punish Google?
If anything their freeriding competitors like Microsoft and Apple will have to pick up the cost.
Are you ready for a Chrome+ subscription? Or maybe Chrome should charge big websites to be Chrome-compatible?
>>
>>103230042
>less than 1 month to make it happen before Trump changes admins
It won't happen. The Biden DOJ & FCC have failed miserably against big corps in the last 4 years.
>>
>>103232794
I'd be ok with paying money to purchase a web browser if the value proposition is there. What I'm not ok with and never will be is paying to rent software or being forced to watch ads in order to use it. If I buy software I expect to be able to run it on my computer as much as I want until the end of time.
>>
>>103236393
that's not really a realistic model for browsers. they need constant security updates, so it would need to be some form of SaaS. buying once and owning wouldn't work here.
>>
>>103237248
That's the model that all software used for the first 40 years of existence. You paid for a major version and got all minor updates for free. When the next major version was released, you could choose to upgrade or continue using the old version if you wanted to. There's no reason that wouldn't work for web browsers too. It would have been the way we'd be doing it now if Microsoft hadn't used its monopoly position to kill Netscape.
>>
>>103233807
So why doesn't the DOJ do something useful like force them to sell android?

>>
What's the point of selling something that's 99.99% FOSS?

Google can just start a new chromium fork.
>>
>>103237273
>So why doesn't the DOJ do something useful like force them to sell android?
That's just as retarded. Google needs to sell everything except their search and advertising branch.

Chrome, Android, ChromeOS, Play Services, Google Docs, Gmail, Google Cloud. They are all part of an integral ecosystem. Unless Apple gets broken up, the only thing which can compete with a complete ecosystem is another complete ecosystem.

As long as Android/ChromeOS/etc ecosystem depends on selling customer data to external advertisers for most of their income, it's going to slowly bleed to death.

>Chrome is just a skin
>Chrome is also useless without integration into Google's ecosystem

>Chrome is sold
>Google forks Chromium
>adds codecs
>adds updates and sync
>hurr durrr "Google Trek"
>Chrome browser loses all of it's users to Trek

>Look at us, we did something™ to combat the corporations!

A possible future emerges - one where Firefox is killed off because Google isn't allowed to fund it, while the Chromium project gets "sold" along with Chrome.
The buyer - undoubtedly a capitalist/expansionist corporation with very little interest or experience will immediately destroy compatibility and demand large sums of money for use of Chromium in order to recuperate their "investment".
Vivaldi Technologies, Opera and Brave Software will go bankrupt, all venturing into AI and web-design, together with Mozilla.
Microsoft, unwilling to pay, will drop Chrome support and promptly revive EdgeHTML (Trident), now to be the only proper browser available alongside Ladybird and Pale Moon (kek!)
Discord and other Electron apps will run to Tauri, as a loophole, until that also dies.
Microsoft looking at the chaos has the idea of the century: Why make just a browser, when you can make a super app?
A webkit, a messenger, a gaming messenger and an AI assistant all in one - directly integrated into Windows and Xbox. While the others perished, they persevered.
And so it came to be that Microsoft won the browser war, years after it ended, and the messenger war, and the console war, and the chatbot war, and the distro war, all thanks to one small action by one well-meaning judge.

Does Google even own Chrome, or do the developers maintain copyright?
FOSS can be revoked, so it would be the funniest thing ever if Google said, "Chrome for sale! $50 billion;" somebody bought it, and then the developers said, "Hey, all you bought was the name. We revoke your right to distribute our code."
