BSD is great if you just have a platonic CPU folating in an abstract hyperspace that doesn't need to interact with any hardware.Otherwise you're kind of screwed.

>>103231918freeBSD needs a default installer on par with that of ubuntu and fedora to be viable, otherwise there's no point in trying to proselytize random anons who aren't motivated
>>103231918No thanks, I hate the antichrist.
I'm willing to put up with Wine in order to run games on Linux. In order to run games on FreeBSD I need to run Wine on top of a Linux compatibility layer.I'll go way out of my way to avoid using GNU software, but I'm not gonna human centipede my games just so I can use a less compatible operating system that requires a space shuttle manual in order to figure out how to change network settings. It's not the 1980s anymore - stop building your shit as though it is.
>>103231918Ive been running it Kvm/qemu. Im going to install on a drive soon. I like it.
>>103231918Skip FreeBSD, go directly to OpenBSD.
>>103231941Have you tried installing it? It's been a while since I've used it but as I recall it's got an ncurses installer that walks you through the whole process of setting up. There's no checking the wiki or anything like Arch or Gentoo and I'm pretty sure you can just hit next straight through the entire thing and have a working installation.

>>103231918I LOVE FREEBSD JAILS!!!!
I just installed FreeBSD 14.1 and it took all of 4 minutes.
Well, I'd have no reason not to switch if there are good guides on how to make a VM with GPU pass-through when I inevitably feel the urge to play some vidya. Are there any guides on that? Does it support external NTFS drives?
>>103233041FreeBSD makes me think about sexy girls in tight red latex. Jails makes me wanna package them snugly into transparent plexiglass containers UwU
>>103231918I really love freebsd on paper (i even used it in the past on an old laptop as a semi-daily drive) but for the moment i don't think i have enough reasons for compromising with it instead of just using Devuan. I may in the future if things go south (as in more redhat bloat creeping in everywhere, linux shooting itself in the foot with more retarded political moves, etc...) but for the time being i'm comfy enough here.
>>103231961>In order to run games on FreeBSD I need to run Wine on top of a Linux compatibility layer.Last time I tried wine on FreeBSD I had a lot of issues and couldn't get it to work. I don't remember what the issues were but has it improved since?
>>103235584I just tried wine in FreeBSD in QEMU again and it seems to work far better than the last time I've tried it years ago. Installing wine itself was painless even with the 32 bit libs.Installing a game currently and we'll see if it will run.If the gpu drivers are available and work properly then it seems like wine could run games without issues.
>>103236101Now I wonder if you could get steam to work in FreeBSD.
>>103236205You could. I remember when I tried FreeBSD several years ago, seeing people running Steam games through a few compatibility layers. The question is are you willing to go through that much bother?
>>103231918Pretending that rc scripts are better than systemd units in the year 2024? Shouldn't you be in a nursing home by now?
