>>103241379Video hosting is a logistical nightmare that only the largest and most corrupt corporations can manage to sustain even temporarily. Back in the day there were lots of video hosting sites but they had tiny user bases in comparison to even the alternative websites today, and they had very strict file size limits. Nowadays the market expects flawless service with 4k streaming for free and without advertisements. That's why there are only two major video streaming websites and they're owned by two of the most invasive and malicious private monopolies in the world. So, really, the question isn't "what went wrong," so much as "was this avoidable?" And if you want to be the biggest streaming platform in the world, the answer is no.If you want to go back to the way things were, check out how Newgrounds has been doing. It's still a much smaller website than YouTube, but they've managed to hold out despite massive economic pressures on little more than some basic advertising and membership subscriptions, and all of that came from cultivating a userbase that's invested in the website's continued stability.

>>103242607Is newgrounds actually doing well still? I'm told it got a lot of new young users when friday night funkin came out.

>>103243150FNF was definitely good for signal boosting Newgrounds, but given that it quickly became its own beast I actually don't know how much of a difference that made. There was also a big influx of artists when Twitter started threatening to ban porn, but Newgrounds apparently has some pretty weird rules that aren't enforced completely evenly, so I don't know how many of those guys have stuck around. As far as I can tell it's just been chugging along, as a relatively small community of passionate creators. I think they like it that way. You don't get the problem of clashing cultures so much, since everyone has something in common. And yeah, people are still uploading stuff. I don't know how much of the oldguard is still around, since a bunch of them moved on to become YouTubers and shit, but the site itself doesn't seem to have slowed down much. It's like a much quieter version of the "does nothing, wins" meme.
