They are scamming people again. I just bought one 6TB WD Purple (WD64PURZ), and the 256mb cache seemed suspicious so I decided to check in via r.tester and it shows as a SMR drive despite being listed as a CMR on their official website. This is the first time when I ever saw a shingled purple, these were never supposed to be smr. Why the fuck are they doing this, why aren't they getting sued for this grift? I will RMA it and from now on I will never buy any modern hdd, fuck these greedy pricks. I'd rather trust an old used drive with 100k power hours or with some reallocated sectors, I already have a bunch of these and I never had any issues.
Just return it to whatever shady third-party grifter you bought it from since you obviously did not buy this from a reputable store.
>>103242812SSDs are getting cheaper so don't expect this kikery to stop anytime soon. 1TB Crucial P3s dipped to $39 this year and will probably dip to less than that next year. Which btw IMHO is still grossly overpriced as far as "value" SSDs go, they just want to milk the whole "pcie nvme" buzzwords as long as possible.https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0B25LZGGW
>>103242856>this yearlast year*
>>103242838I don't think it has to do anything with third party retailers. I remember when they started including smr drives in their wd red lineup and only after getting caught they started releasing wd red plus/pro. They already did it once so I guess they simply decided to fuck their customers again due to greediness.
>>103242856The problem is that ssd nowadays are suffering from quality issues as well. Many samsung 870 evos, 980 pros and crucial mx500s are failing en masse despite being reputable and known for making reliable ssd like 850-860 evo which I already have. I think they should become bankrupt and replaced with companies who don't fuck their customers over and over again.
Both St and WD have been caught hiding their SMR shit.Which should be illegal. Why did they have to ruin HDDs at this point? Wasn't it enough with the MLC flash shit?
>>103242914Lemons will always exist but the reliability of SSDs compared to modern SMR HDDs isn't in any measurable way comparable especially if you exclude the 0.01% of SSDs that died from faulty/broken controllers since wearing down modern NAND especially in 1TB capacities or higher is actually kind of stupid hard.
IMHO just stick to DVDisaster and optical if you can't afford SSDs. Sure you can find used CMR HDDs but you're taking a gamble it won't suffer from mechanical failures soon.
>>103242873of course they did, this shit's the norm on ssd's now, goysumers will absolutely take it enterprise drives and used drives are the only way nowadays
>>103242812Correction: do not buy any modern HDD at all as a regular user. Consumer disks are SMR, enterprise disks are CMR but noisy af. I can tolerate>vjj vjj vjjj vj vjjjjjon disk access, but when a girl comes, I have to stop disks altogether. I even consider returning an N300 I just bought. Idle is quiet, but seek is annoying. Why is it so hard to make>CMR>12Tb+>5400rpm>less than 20€/Tbthese days
>>103243003they want to destroy consumer hdd marketWD and seagate were bribed by disney, WB and other "entertainment" giants to kill off piracyall hopes on toshiba not fucking up
>>103244269What the fuck are you talking about? My Ironwolf's are no louder than my Seagate coomsoomershit, and actually quieter than any WD drive I have, coomsomershit or not.
