Why is it so difficult and expensive to make a fanless power supply?
>>
heat
>>
Laptop power supplies overheat constantly, 600w power supplies burn down a house even with a fan.
>>
>>103248601
Heat make magnetic field go bye. Also it's apparently becoming difficult and expensive to make ones with fans. You can never get what you want in wattage/rating, it's like I have to compromise with having too much wattage in order to get anything in Gold+
>>
>>103248601
If you use a 1500W PSU with a fan, but never exceed 900W, the fan never comes on.
>>
>>103248601
>Why is it so difficult and expensive to make a fanless power supply?
it's never been difficult. they cost more to make and can be quite heavy. it's purely for economic reasons.
>>
>>103248601
They are only a little more expensive to manufacture, the real reason why they are sold a LOT more expensive is because the only people interested in them are people who give importance to total silence, like labs, music studios and other professionals they can take advantage of. Don't forget that the only goal of a company is to make as much profit as possible. Like "So you absolutely want a perfectly silent PSU? How much are you willing to spend for that? Five times more than it should?"
>>
>>103249586
Everyone should value total silence. Who the fuck wants to hear constant fan noise when they're using a computer?
>>
Because it's fucking stupid, and it requires a greater amount of material and custom fabrication to try adequately cooling a high wattage system with purely passive cooling just because you're autistic and get triggered by fan sound.
>>
>>103249987
Not being able to recognize sounds in your environment is a sign of low IQ.
>>
>>103248821
when I replaced my old psu with an RM650x I thought it was broken because the fan barely turned on.

I'm surprised anyone could be bothered by the fan. Maybe it's because my pc is pre-fishtank case design so it actually has adequate cooling?
>>
>>103248601
GAN, custom heat sinks, custom heat pipes, low volume.

Manufacturing cost is only slightly higher, but they don't have a lot of competition and a lot of R&D invested.
>>
>>103248821
>>103250381
I have a Corsair RM750e and the fan always turns on after 5 minutes of just idling on the Windows desktop with no cpu usage. It's the loudest and most annoying fan in my computer, since the GPU fans are off when it isn't doing anything 3d and the cpu and case fans are spinning at a low enough rpm that they're barely audible. These PSU manufacturers all lie about their fan curves and db levels.
>>
>>103250381
>I'm surprised anyone could be bothered by the fan
The way people still describe modern components as "loud" baffles me desu
Your noise floor would have to be like 20db, and I know none of these retards live in the countryside.
>>
>>103248601
Not difficult, but expensive as they need to reduce heat by a lot. Which means they need to source parts that are of much higher quality than standard to stop the inefficient heat loss.
>>
>>103250339
>MUH SOUNDS
Is the rest of your computer fanless? Do you have no other audio sources? Do you have autism? Or are you just some edgy underage that thinks making an allusion to the dead smoke detector battery issue makes you hip and cool?
>>
>>103248601
as others pointed out, it's just hard to make. Good psus have about 90% efficiency. for 1000W that means 100W of power ends up as heat. You have to dump that somewhere, and that's hard without fans. Plus the other 900W will also just turn into heat in the other components, and would probably require fans anyway.
>>
>>103250473
I live in a peaceful white suburban neighborhood where it's virtually silent inside when the windows are closed. Even 20db of fan noise is noticeable and annoying in this environment.
>>
>>103250495
So you have no ac, no heater, no fridge, no actual neighbors and no wiring in your walls?
That's the only way you can reasonably claim 20db is loud
>>
>>103250431
my fan is only noticable at max usage, but still only like 50% noise level compared to my case/cpu fans. Are you using max power draw 24/7 or is it set to down cycle?
>>103250432
you dont know noise until you've lived in a basement apartment senpai. I think it did permanent damage to me
>>
>>103250432
Some of us have actual insulation in their walls anon. 20db in the evening was pretty close for me the last three places I've lived in a major population center. A PSU fan is loud as fuck when it's the only noise.
>>103250473
>Is the rest of your computer fanless?
I have 24 fans and my PC is like 15db. If I took my PSU off of the hybrid fan mode, it would by far be the loudest thing in the system.
>>103250575
PSU fans aren't 20db. Maybe if you have one of those special Noctua ones.
>>103250659
>you dont know noise until you've lived in a basement apartment senpai. I think it did permanent damage to me
Doing my first custom loop build did that to me. It was crazy how loud everything else became once there weren't four fans doing 1500-2500RPM all the time.
>>
>>103250698
>>103250495
So you have autism and must live in a very northern cold place, because just having the window open or a human-cooling fan running would trigger you.
>>
>>103250725
I have to listen to 15k RPM, 30HP spindles all day. I like to come home and not have to listen to something similar. Sue me.
>>
>>103248601
energy > heat > ahhhhh > x_x

energy > fan > awsome sauce > :)
>>
>>103250756
>waaah I make $80K+ sitting in a server room sometimes so a power supply cooling itself is a problem
And you haven't considered putting your computer in another room and using long cables to your input devices and monitors? Or maybe just not being a bitch?
>>
>>103250982
>30HP spindles
>server room
Why do that when I can just have a silent PC?
>>
>>103250816
so based
>>
>>103250339
>Not being able to recognize sounds in your environment is a sign of low IQ.
DEAFNESS not DAFTNESS, though I guess you don't understand the difference.
>>
Catch 22.
A fanless PSU only makes sense in a completely silent setup.
But a completely silent setup doesn't have enough airflow to stop a fanless PSU from overheating.

So it makes more sense to use PSU that has a fan that's as quiet as the rest of your fans.
>>
>>103250431
>RM750e
The E's are kinda cursed, the fan controler curve is annoying as fuck
>>
>>103248601
platinum is 10% thermal loss. you need to manage 85 watts of heat waste under max load and do it in a manner that conforms to standard atx power supply size. it's not all conveniently limited to a single area like a CPU die so it's not like you can just nigger rig a CPU heatsink and be done with it.
>>
>>103248601
bequiet PSU fans are noiseless
>>
>>103249603
the power supply fan is the fucking least of your worries if you're trying to build a silent PC
>>
>>103248601
modern ones make zero noise how mentally ill do you have to be to give a shit my subwoofers and headphones drown anything out
>>103248690
this my 250w dell one got stupid hot
>>
>>103250698
>PSU fans aren't 20db. Maybe if you have one of those special Noctua ones.
I have an FSP hydro PTM pro 1200w
Fan doesn't come on until 450W and stays under 25db until 800W
Coil whine from motherboard and GPU is louder

FSP's newer hydro ti pro is silent to 850W
>>
if you want a fanless psu for cheap just stick your cock in a cheap chink one so the fan breaks.

you now have your cheap fanless chink psu and hopefully you die from penis blood.
>>
>>103248601
coil whine

The rm850x fan is supposedly very quiet, but I could hear it spin up. Sounded like some squeaky sound. And it's pretty loud and takes a while to ramp down when the gpu/cpu/case fans all wind down back to idle speeds with my custom fan curves. I just replaced the fan with an arctic 140mm fan that I can control with my own custom curve and I can never hear it now.
>>
>>103250725
>>103250432

dude shut the fuck up, he's right. When you live in a neighborhood where the next house over is 2 fences 3 treelines and a security gate come debate decibles, until then I can tell how acclimated you are to your noisy, poor (qualitatively and financially), environment.

also this:

this is the lowest form of iq take on economics, also leave the thread

Being able to constantly recgnize a constant sound is a sign of autism though

lmao I would not trust my pc components to that shit
>>
I hadn't heard my supernova 1200 fan in 8 years when I had 3 290's mining. Now a single 6800xt and 7800x3d make it spin up quite consistently.
>>
>>103248601
Nobody else wants one. You are a very vocal and irritating 1% of users that scream and fall on the ground at any sound over 15db.

i have this fractal design 660w platinum psu and the fan only turns on under very heavy load and even then it's basically silent.
i don't like it tho because it has coil whine in sleep mode
