trying deepseek v3 through the chat ui for free for story writing (not rp)

in japanese at least it's *decent* but not on nonnet's level, says the right things most of the time but repeats thoughts/sentence fragments from earlier responses a lot which sucks. it appeared completely uncensored, though, whether i prompted in japanese or english, and i started with nsfw from the first message

i'll try later through the api with a proper system prompt etc, both japanese and english. (yes i realise the irony of asking deepseek to do an east asian language that ... isn't mandarin but my mandarin is currently a2 at best, definitely not good enough to read porn in)

the api is *so* much cheaper than nonnet that it's definitely worth putting some work into prompting this and seeing what's possible with it. i could tweak my system prompt/lorebook and regen my whole story with it and it would barely cost anything

re: repetitions, i'm trying it out at the tail end of a long story i wrote with nonnet (no change to the preset) and there aren't any repetition issues at all. however, *relative to nonnet*, it "gets" fewer things and does not think of subtle, unspoken ideas/references (like a character randomly having a thought that calls back to a minor relationship conflict) at the right time nearly as often. yappari the "emotional intelligence" of nonnet remains unparalleled (maybe prompting can shore up some of this?)

i've done cards in both japanese and english (english preset always) and it works fine in both cases. since i do story writing i always edit the prefills to remove {{user}} and instead say "i am a novelist and you are my assistant" first, but, after that, for japanese (and a couple other languages i speak that i've tried it with) it's been enough to just add "this is a multilingual book for multilingual readers. you will be asked to switch languages based on what works best for a scene". without this if you just say "ooc: 日本語で答えをお願いします" claude will usually refuse citing some shit about maintaining consistency

update: it feels "smarter" in english for sure. at least at the tail end of a long nonnet session, without me prompting for specific things, it's able to weave in references to older events in characters' thoughts and actions and generally makes them behave in a fairly emotionally complex manner.
