Microsoft Windows 11 24H2 update may cause SSD failures; DRAMless SSDs are more vulnerable.
If you have a potentially vulnerable SSD, revert Windows update, disable automatic Windows update, & use Registry Editor to set 64 MB HMB allocation policy (or disable HMB).
https://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsofts-latest-windows-11-24h2-update-breaks-ssdshdds-may-corrupt-your-data/

RTX 50 Super: might launch in Q4 '25, 24GB VRAM for 5070 Ti & 5080 Super, 18GB for 5070 Super.

>Omissions
RTX 5070: buy if it's reasonably priced & if you plan to work around potential VRAM bottlenecks.
RX 9070 non-XT: worth considering if it's significantly cheaper than the 9070 XT.

Intel 13 & 14th gen i7/9 -K CPUs: BIOS update required due to reliability issues. Recommended to set a CPU VR voltage limit (1.4 or 1.45V).

14600k was free cpu if you bought the early bundle on newegg with double games + bf6 whatever edition

why aren't you buying THE de facto best price-performance cpu currently? It was free

its pretty easy to test. does it happen while completely idle or only while you're in the middle of something like swapping windows and moving the mouse?
>>
>>106423340
The problem with the word “flicker” is that it means different things to everyone. Is your screen going black for a second? Is only half your screen going black/gray? Is it like a 10 second random black screen and then recover?? All of these things have different causes and solutions.
>>

maybe throw buildzoid a few dollars on patreon since he deserves it, your total build cost is still lower

what nvme ssd can run at gen5x2 for gen4x4 speeds?
I'm planning on using the Msi x870e tomahawk and the second nvme slot is connected to the cpu but shares 4 gen5 lanes with the usb-c 40gbps ports, ending at 2 gen5 lanes for each.
Apparently not many nvms can run gen5x2 for full gen4 speeds so I would like help here
Alternatively, is there any benefit to the usb c ports? I even found out that if you use both ports at the same time, the bandwidth gets split making them 20gbps transfer speeds. If theres no real benefit ill just disable them in the bios so all 4 gen5 lanes go to the second m.2

You need to buy a Gen 5x2 drive like the 990 Evo Plus to get the full rated performance under that config.
A Gen 4x4 NVMe drive will be running at Gen 4x2 if it's sharing lanes with the USB-C port.
Do not buy the 990 EVO, it's mediocre. 990 Evo Plus is the better buy.

Can you guys give me your opinion? I'm thinking of getting an imac (for macOS/icloud) and want to be able to play these games, would an M1 be able to handle these at decent framerates? Or would I need an M2?

Or do you think it would be better to get a mini pc? Keep in mind I'd have to add the extra cost of a monitor on top of that, where as imacs already have a top-tier monitor.

>Software defined super cores
>Techniques for software defined super core usage are described. In some examples, a fist and second processor core are to operate as a single virtual core enabled by the operating system to fetch the first set of instruction segments of the single threaded program and the second set of instruction segments of the single threaded program concurrently using flow control instructions that have been inserted into the single threaded program.

Spend a bit more for an aio.
It's not like the i5 which turned into a house fire with an uncapped power limit but still a nice to have.

7600CL36 is fine? This motherboard's QVL doesn't list any fast kits over 32GB, and I'd like at least 48GB.
Would rather avoid AIOs, is a dual tower cooler really not adequate for 265K? I'm in a cold climate FWIW

Not at all. It is 2520p which is above average but offers no benefit over 4k at the size. Size is low end. The technology and contrast is low end (tft), brightness of 500nits is lower midrange at best and refresh rate (60hz) is low end. Color accuracy is high-mid to low-high end.

Italy, budget is € 2K. I want to build a future-proof PC (especially in the GPU and storage departments) which can still be valuable in a 10-years time span. I will be running programming, AI generation softwares (image now, video in the future, when I want to invest into a better GPU), 2K gaming at 240fps (I mostly play fps games, most of which are old, like Mordhau, Chivalry 2, Team Fortress 2, Overwatch 2), heavy usage of web applications and web browsing (Chrome), maybe even getting into video editing in the future. I know that both the CPU and the PSU are overkill for what I need now but, again, I don't want to cheap out on them now and regret it later. My current PC desktop mounts 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 6GB and an i5 6500 and I think it's lived past its lifetime: even watching 2K YouTube videos at a stable 60fps can be challenging, let alone playing smoothly at my favourite games at more than 80 fps without a heavy customisation. Let me guys know what you think about my build.

It costs more than the 9900X and, although it's probably better for gaming, gaming will only be one task out of 5 I need. As for the 5070Ti Super, yes, it might be wise to wait for it but the local PC retailer in my area (which is going to build my PC, btw: I forgot to write this in my previous post) says that it might come out in winter when PC components prices generally increase. The Pure Power 13M recommended by the other anon is a sane stopping point.
Newegg is discounting Corsair's $320 HX1200i (ATX 3.0) PSU to $200 atm.

SN8100 is a better drive than the 9100 Pro in practically all review data.
990 Pro is included because it competes well against the SN850X (in Windows)

990 Evo Plus is a decent DRAMless option to include (for Windows), but it's a Gen 5x2 drive.
Not everyone will decide to use a DRAMless drive as their primary SSD in the Gen 5x4 slot, then it'll run in Gen 4x2 with performance capped to 4GB/s.

the new monitors with 500hz and up are pretty expensive, you'd only get frames for them in pvp games usually so it might not make a lot of sense to invest into them. If you bought a 5090 for example youd be better off buying 240hz 4k monitor.

the fps lock prevents vsync latency penalty from engaging. the point of the fps lock + vsync is because fps caps are not perfect in different games. vsync ensures you get smooth image instead of tear or microjudder from going over.

Any suggestions for a motherboard for AM5? At first I was thinking about the B850M MSI Gaming Plus Wi-Fi, but after discussing it on other boards, I changed my opinion to the B850-G ROG Strix. My budget is quite limited. As for the CPU, I'm thinking of installing a 7500f, then maybe upgrading to a 7800x3d, in theory, an MSI with 8 phases is completely enough for me. My case is a jonsbo z20, so the asus tuf won't work because their pcie slot is shifted by 1 slot.

I would get a cheap 120mm CPU cooler and use an NF-A12x25 with that
same deal with the GPU, deshroud and graft two NF-A12x25s onto it
you could also replace the GPU's paste with PTM, which will help to some extent

you can also set a -20mV offset to your CPU cores via pbotuner2, that'll help

>I would get a cheap 120mm CPU cooler
I've been using a Hyper 212 Turbo, and I'm thinking of going for something stronger than that perhaps would help besides just more economical power modes, though it has degraded a lot. r
>GPU paste with PTM
Been considering that, but what would the difference even be when I got paste for days? Here's the thing, it's a Ventus 3X. So it has two modes of operation, either "off" or "LOUD AS BALLS" (at least 30% since this thing has no heatsink whatsoever). Not sure if I could just buy an aftermarket heatsink or just sell off the card entirely and get something that's at least half as good as dissipating heat as my 280X's cooler. Can't exactly just strap it onto the card and put 120mm fans on it.

Spooky.

Does your motherboard have any power indicator lights? If yes and the lights are not on, check to see if your power supply is working by shorting the power pin and checking the voltage with a multimeter.

If the psu works and your computer doesn't turn on, next try shorting the power jumper on the motherboard.

If there's still nothing, try leaving just one slice of ram in.

If that still not work, either borrow some parts from a friend or take it to a shop.
>>
>>106425997
I would reuse the heatsink regardless and control some aftermarket fans via a motherboard header to bypass the fan curve the crappy BIOS the card is bound to have
I haven't checked the aftermarket GPU cooler market since my raijintek morpheus days in 2016, but at first glance it seems pretty much dead and older cooler compability with modern GPUs will be unlikely. arctic's accelero coolers are no longer sold either, so that's a doompill

I remember socket 775 and three phases was enough to hold 95 w Core 2 Quad and even to overclock. And my 3 phase budget motherboard from 2010 still works and its my second backup computer. 65 watts is very low power. Also 60 watts gpus w/o 8 pin connector has only two phases. I currently have a 1 TB SATA Samsung EVO SSD. I could upgrade to a NVMe which supposedly is vastly superior, but I'm currently still on an AM4 motherboard. I also heard that PCIe 5 drives are faster but only in theory so its not worth it to buy one right now. Should I just wait a bit longer and then upgrade my entire rig to am5? Or just get a NVMe upgrade now? Mostly do some gaming/LLM dabbling on the side

Just get an SN850X or 990 pro. It will be faster than SATA and you can being the drive with you to a new build

If you need more storage go ahead and buy an NVMe. May as well be PCIe 4.0 based since they're just as cheap as 3.0 models now.
If you don't need more storage, don't bother. NVMe's speed advantage only really shows up in "productivity" applications i.e. moving large, contiguous files.

Okay yeah, budget permitting, I'd go for a 2TB PCIe4 NVMe. No point skimping since you're going to reuse it as an OS drive on your next build. The 2TB SN770, SN7100, and NM790 are all around $120 right now. All solid midrange drives. If you're on Windows 11 (issues with HMB drives), the cheapest model I can see with onboard DRAM is the Team A440 at $140.

>>
>>106423308
Ok so I'm in a weird spot. two years ago I bought a ryzen 5 5600x and the relative MOBO. I was planning to use it with my 6750XT. However we had a big health scare in the house and I couldn't finish my build until now. Now, I find myself with an almost 6 years old CPU. What do I do? I come from an old intel i7 4770s, I play mainly japanese games, emulation, very few AAA and some gachaslop like Wuthering Waves, Rimworld, EU IV, those kind of games. Do I just finish the build I have right now, do I buy a newer CPU? I play at 1080p/60fps and I don't plan to upgrade at 144op anytime soon. Yes I know I'm a retard and I should have finished the build sooner but I didn't feel like to spend money during uncertain times. I haven't bought RAM sticks yet.
>>
>>106430298
So what all do you need to finish it? I'd be hesitant to reuse a PSU thats 10+ years old at this point, so maybe PSU and RAM? RAM is the only additional thing that wouldn't carry over to a new build anyways, 32 GB can be had for less than $100.

>What's this? A defense contractor pc?
Government corruption in the Philippines. Some mayor bought a bog standard $1000 i3 office PC and billed it for $175000. This is how many companies steal money; they have a friend or relative set up a shell company that sells stuff at a ridiculous markup, and then they will contract them exclusively, and pocket the difference. If they buy stuff from a grant or from taxes, then it's basically stealing the money that way. Like in Independence Day, when President Bill Pullman gets told by the Jew Dad if he really believed that a hammer costs $20k and a toilet seat costs $50k.

Our local government did it too, they exclusively purchased groceries from a shop right next to the political parties HQ, where things like bread and milk cost something like 15$.
>>
>>106431280
1000 USD is still too expensive for this build. this honestly looks like it only costs 250 dollars!

>>106431320
Doesn't matter how much it originally cost, it could be a 14900k with dual 5090s, the point is that it got billed $175000, was paid for by taxpayer money, and the difference got pocketed by the government.

anons I have a hard drive question, I have an old B450 Tomahawk non-pro motherboard, it has an M2 slot but I don't know if buying an M2 drive will be any faster than my SATA SSD OS drive, what do you think?

If you have to ask, you won't notice a difference. NVMe is unnoticeable compared to even a SATA II SSD in most use cases.

Buy an OLED TV when it's discounted. Owning two TB400 OLED monitors is a waste of money.

ASRock boards have been reported to kill a few Ryzen 7000 CPUs as well; it's not posted as often as the 9000 X3D chips.
I would at least wait until the new 3.40 BIOS is available for that board you're interested in, and apply that update before you install the CPU to the ASRock board.
Most AM5 B- & X- boards have a CPUless BIOS updating feature; read the board manual for specifics.
