where has the mpv general gone? anyway help me there. I've encoded some amvs in h266 using both vvenc and uvg266 encoders. but every time i open them with ffplay or mpv i get

[lavf] This format is marked by FFmpeg as having no timestamps!
[lavf] FFmpeg will likely make up its own broken timestamps. For
[lavf] video streams you can correct this with:
[lavf] --no-correct-pts --container-fps-override=VALUE
[lavf] with VALUE being the real framerate of the stream. You can
[lavf] expect seeking and buffering estimation to be generally
[lavf] broken as well.

I'm considering buying an RTX 4080 but I only got two 8-pin connectors on my psu although they're "split" cables, AIslop told me its fine to plug the two cables and have the last 8-pin input plugged by a split 8-pin assuming I have a decent power supply and the 4080 doesn't draw that much power to stress two seperate cables(its a 3 8-pin to 16 pon adapter btw).
Is that true? I'm planning on undervolting if that counts for anything

It's really inadvisable to use old PSU near its limit with new GPUs because they have large transient demands old PSUs weren't built for. Especially nVidia because those adapters are notorious for melting. Buy a modern PSU with a real H++ connector. Not worth fucking around damaging a $1500 card to save $130.

Any anon with knowledge of PE analysis?

I was making a small tool to check windows protections for a given PE: ASLR, DEP, CFG, GS, etc.

To identify if it was compiled with /GS option (it has stack cookies/canaries) I checked if the LOAD_CONFIG_DIRECTORY exists (there is a RVA entry not 0 in the corresponding IMAGE_DATA_DIRECTORY struct) and, if it does, then check the SecurityCookie field.

However I have found binaries that does not have Load Config Directory but looking at the assembly it has mechanisms like GS: in ghidra decompilation it calls the (renamed) functions __security_check_cookie and __report_gsfailure. So I'm confused, should I implement some kind of heuristic pattern search for assembly instructions?

Gaming laptops are at best toys for people who can afford to buy a new one every couple of generations and at worst unusable specmaxxed garbage. If you can't afford a gaming desktop and a decent laptop, a gaming laptop is a decision you'll regret on a very short time frame. Which is unfortunately the vast majority of people who buy them these days.

Anyone any idea why it's doing this? Picrel when I try to go on X. Already deleted all the cookies and stuff

Bought pic related to get audio over headphones from some video game consoles at my desk.

Here's the thing, it works great - as long as it gets its power from either one of the USB ports on those consoles or my computer monitor. It sounds fine in that scenario and the power led and toslink port light up.

If however, i plug it into any of the numberous USB power supplies that I own, the power led and toslink port do not light up. I still get audio but it sounds pretty terrible, especially when base comes into the mix.

As per the manual, those power supplies should be able to provide enough power. Yet something is off.

Any idea how to fix this? I really would prefer it if I could plug the thing directly into the outlet instead of my monitor.

Thanks

Probably just has shitty regulation and they never tested on consoles. Consoles are notoriously persnickety about USB DACs, and battery chargers aren't trying to be logic grade power supplies like computer USB power.

I wouldn't rule out grounding issues other Anon was talking about, but ime pro audio gear is poorly engineered outside its specific professional use case, and bs like this is not unusual.

My phone apparently has a barometer. How does this actually get used anywhere? Are there any apps for like local weather prediction, or just an atmospheric pressure readout, or can I use it for altitude measurements (granted a bit redundant if there's gps signal but)? Is your question just whether you can plug one of the two 8-pin connectors branching out of the same cable? If so yes, that's the entire reason why they're split and not held together as a single 16 pin one

the sole purpose of your phone having a barometer is more accurate location tracking.

How can I find out what size of screwdriver do I need for a particular set of screws?

Other than finding out the information on the Internet (which I haven't managed so far) or in the manual (which I threw in the trash long ago). In example, my ""super resistant"" phone
https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/e96f5f9c

It survived a fall from about 5 meters but the back cover is bent so now it's obviously no longer water resistant. Two of the screws are loose and even the smallest screwdriver I have in my set won't work.

But also stuff like computer components. I assume the screws used for coolers are new standardized and by looking at it from above I can't even tell what brand it is.
>>
>>106558931
They're mostly bad because they make for bad gaming machines and bad laptops. Cooling in a laptop will always be way worse than in a proper tower, so you get lower performance, while price is still super high; you're paying a premium for a lower specced machine just because it's a laptop. Doesn't help when nvidia does extremely misleading marketing by calling its mobile GPUs with the same name as desktop ones despite being totally incomparable (i.e. for example a 5090M is significantly weaker than a 5090, more comparable to a 5080 iirc, but you look at it and think "wow it's a 5090 in my laptop!", and it costs as much as you'd expect for an actual 5090 in a laptop).

But, at the same time, big GPUs are extremely power hungry so the battery on those laptops typically lasts like 1-2 hours under load, which is laughable for a "portable" device. For the really top specced stuff, it's also going to be heavy as shit and usually thick as shit. You really can't use them on your lap or anywhere other than a proper desk with a power plug nearby.

Really they're closer to "portable all-in-one desktops" which sounds like a gimmicky gadget that barely anyone should buy, maybe if you go to LAN parties a lot and are happy paying a premium and taking the performance hit.

>>106561390
>Borrowing your question: does every laptop with dedicated graphics count as gaymen laptop?
I wouldn't say so, there are a lot of "workstation" laptops with midrange graphics cards that are designed and marketed for people doing CAD, simulations, 3D art etc. They have similar issues but to a much lesser degree since they don't need to be anywhere near as bulky to fit e.g. a 5070 or equivalent, and they're priced overall reasonably compared to the usual business laptop markup. They still suck at battery life but since they're office machines it can actually make sense to have a portable desktop replacement meant primarily just for moving from desk to desk.
>>
>>106563555
I see, does it use it for the altitude fix or something? That sounds unreliable since I don't think it comes with a thermometer, so you wouldn't really be able to get an absolute altitude value from it.
>>
>>106563425
Yeah guess you’re right. Still the thing is that the host I plug it into isn’t actually part of the signal chain. I use RCA cinch to headphone jack only. I don’t need whatever controlling is possible over USB. Just whatever parts on the inside amplify and clean the signal don’t wake up unless connected to a host device.

I was only looking for a headphone amp that gives me rca to headphone with volume control - which this does too but not from a wall set socket

Am I an out-of-touch boomer? I noticed a massive spike in internet data usage in an application (a 3rd worlder food delivery phone app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bolt.deliveryclient&hl=en-US in case you're wondering). Used like 50 MB in the foreground and 5 MB in the background, even in June/July. In August the data usage jumped to >3GB in the foreground and now, in September, in less than a week, 2 GB in the foreground and 2.5 GB in the background.

Their support tells me "we don't have anything to do with how much data the application uses, contact your operator". But it drains the same amount on different devices, different mobile networks, or wifi. Is there something that could possibly explain this behavior of the application? Other than it mining Bitcoin in the background or something. Like is there really a possibility that this is just Android mis-attributing the data to this poor innocent app?
>>
>>106560660
It's not retarded but it's not a lot of storage. Usually free tiers are like a few GB each, maybe a couple of dozen if they're generous. One 2TB hdd is probably like $50 so consider how much time you're spending and what that would be worth in comparison.
The benefit of cloud storage is that it won't disappear if your house burns down or even if your one HDD fails (and if you wanted two HDDs for safety that's now $100), so if you really only have a few GB of important files then sure it might well be worth it.
Remember that the downside of cloud storage is that while it can't burn down, they CAN just delete your account for no reason, so make sure you still have copies of your files elsewhere. (E.g. locally on your computer, plus duplicated on 1-2 other cloud providers.)
>>
>>106563659
The likeliest explanation sounds like it's just doing a lot more data harvesting on you right now.
Mining bitcoin barely uses any network data FYI. What does use data is sending real-time detailed information about your current location, current device usage, etc., for them to analyse and sell to advertising companies for better profiling of your personality and habits.

Disable network connectivity for the app when you're not using it. How you do that depends on your mobile OS (rooted android, grapheneos, stock android, ios, etc.) and I'm not sure it's possible on all of them.

I want to buy this cable so that I can plug one end into my phone, the other into my guitar headphone amp (which you normally just plug headphones into), and then connect both to my headphones.
Is there any reason why this wouldn't work? Also, the microphone and headphone symbols don't really mean anything, they're both just regular 3.5 mm male connectors, right?
>>
New to linux, so how the fuck do I install Steam?
I download the file, but now what?
>>
>>106563935
That happens with green team too (sometimes), it's a windows 10 problem.
>>
>>106564036
I'm not an expert on this but as far as I'm aware, headphone ports will supply electrical signals while microphone ports expect the microphone to supply electrical signals. So they are indeed both 3.5mm male connectors but the wiring inside going to the combo port might not work out the way you want to. For that matter I'm not sure how combo ports are wired.
I expect in the best case you'll only get sound from the headphone connector plug, it's possible you won't get sound at all somehow, and in the worst case I wouldn't be too surprised if it was possible to damage something this way (though it's also possible it's foolproof enough that you can't and it just won't work). I find it quite unlikely that it will work directly the way you want it to.

Do you just want both audio signals to combine? You might need a special splitter cable. For that matter I'm not sure if just a cable splicing the wires together would work - if it does you could probably nigger-rig one yourself, but it's entirely possible that short-circuiting two headphone ports will make them not work properly and you need some kind of more complex circuitry to splice two audio signals together.
>>
>>106564039
What file? Is it a .deb? If so you can easily install it only if you're on debian or ubuntu, use dpkg. I don't use those distros so look it up (e.g. "how to install .deb on ubuntu"), it's relatively simple I just don't remember it off the top of my head.

Otherwise see if Steam is available in your package manager instead. It is on a lot of distros. If not, consider the flatpack version. Steam in particular can be somewhat fiddly. If you want to install manually without any package managers you might need to do some work to get all the libraries and shit it needs.

>>
>>106564264
>Do you just want both audio signals to combine?

Go into settings and edit app permissions to only let it use this and that while the application is opened; Keep in mind that you usually have to do this every time an app updates, because updates reset permissions. That's why all those stupid google apps have like 15kB updates occasionally.
>>
>>106564421
>It should be the exact same scenario as wanting to plug your headphones into 2 phones at once
It is, everything I said applies to that too. Headphones (and their cables) are not really made to be plugged into multiple sources at once, it's not something people generally do.
Have you tried searching for an actual splitter or combiner cable? All I said is that the headphone/microphone cable is unlikely to do what you want. That doesn't mean the cable you want doesn't exist though.

How do you turn off the "auto-dubbed" cancer in YouTube? When you google it, it's just "hey there CONTENT CREATOR, here's how YOU can turn off auto dubbing on or off for your videos!" - but nothing to protect the consumers from seeing some retarded slop video offered in auto-dub version in recommended. Even worse is when it literally auto-dubs my own native language just because I live in a different country.

how important is screen resolution?
I have the choice between two displays as secondary monitor. One is very slightly superior but is only 1650x1080 while the other one supports 1920x1080
they're otherwise almost identical afaict, same brand, just seems like the next gen, NEC E223 vs E224

For media and gaming 1920 is the way to go; What's your budget? You can probably get even higher resolution.

What you have to learn is how the language works, structures, functions, or any other concepts that it has. This is pretty easy if you already know other languages, but might require a bit of getting used to if it's your first one.
That's the stuff you have you have to know and remember. If you're forgetting what specific commands you need to use, you can look those up whenever, unless it's so bad that it's significantly slowing down your work.

My ISP has a smartphone app which has an option to get "free internet" by connecting to another person's wifi (no need for password). It works as long as that person is also a client of the same provider, and has the internet sharing thing turned on. My question is: how does this whole thing work (on a technical level)? also, could it be a security concern having that option turned on?

Firefox with Betterfox or Arkenfox is still a great option. You basically copy a file into your profile and you're basically done. There are a shit ton of FF forks out there but at the end of the day they're still FF. Ungoogled-chromium does support uBO even under MV3, so if you don't need anything else it's fine.

Revoke its permission to run in the background. You may lose live updates when the app is not open, but I think this is warranted.
I'd be worried about it siphoning your files more than anything, that kind of network usage is very suspicious.

The wiring inside that female connector is different than what you expect. It has 4 rings, so you'll effectively be shorting two of them when you'll plug your headphones in it. Best case scenario is that you'll only hear one device.

>how does this whole thing work
The ISP mandates their own router (always a red flag) and the router is managed by them remotely, enrolled into a RADIUS scheme of some sort. The phone app requests a RADIUS token and installs it on your phone, thus allowing the phone to connect to any router of that ISP.
Some phone carriers do this using SIM authentication to WiFi access points installed in public places.

The ideal way to "know" something as a programmer is to know what you can and can't do. Like, "I can structure it this way" or "if I do it like that then I can't pass this memory so it won't work". Any other details can easily be looked up in a reference, most people don't remember things like the std library APIs in their head unless it's stuff they've used a lot recently.

LLMs can't remember anything. They're frozen in time at the moment they're trained.

There's also an argument to be made that the structure is very different. The amount of neurons is vastly inferior, and the connections between them are extremely simplified (just a simplistic mathematical function, while real biological neurons have very complex chemical pathways for transmitting signals between each other). The fact that chatgpt can produce coherent text while using a vastly simpler model of a vastly smaller size than the human brain probably means that there's some capability missing, and it's hyper-optimised to produce text more efficiently than a brain can but nothing else.

Why do relatively low technical requirement applications take so much resources when running on VM? Like if I run a shitty unity game on my windows VM, it is more taxing on the host's CPU than it running a complex 3D graphics game.
>>
>>106566614
3D graphic games are supposed to run on the GPU. If you're running it on the host that's definitely what's happening and that's why the CPU is barely taxed. But is the shitty unity game in the VM running on the GPU or CPU? If it's a 3D game and it's running on the CPU it will absolutely take a ton of resources, CPUs are bad at that. But providing a GPU to a VM usually takes some extra effort.

If you haven't set up your VM to use your GPU, then you need to compare some actual CPU workloads rather than games.
>>
>>106566637
>shitty unity game in the VM running on the GPU or CPU?
It has only 2D graphics, so it had better not require any GPU/VRAM.
>>
>>106566651
It may not "require" the GPU but even sprite rendering is very likely faster on the GPU.
>VRAM
Do you think it will read the sprites from your HDD on every frame? It will require memory to store them, RAM if it runs on the CPU and VRAM if it runs on the GPU.

Basically check the host and make sure it runs on the CPU if it isn't. If it is, then that's a different question.

simplified version is it scans your face to generate a hash, that hash is combined with another hash that, the second hash is generated from some hard coded data on the processor that the operating system does not have access too. It is OS independent, it doesn't work before the OS starts it isn't autonomous

Think of it how a video encoder is on the GPU, the CPU does not encode the video itself, it passes the correct calls to the hardware to perform the function, the function is handled by the GPU's video encoder, but it doesn't go around on its own looking for video to encode, it waits until it is told to
>Would it stop a random person from booting off of a USB?
No, it is used for generating keys
>Decrypt what?
In the case of Pluton it could be used for full disk encryption or just Windows Hello, anything you use the OS to encrypt instead of some 3rd party app. It is essentially how FaceID and TouchID work on iPhones, and like the iphone you can choose not to use it and not have any PIN/password to login to the machine

I would run a extensive smart test on the drive from a linux distro (live usb works) or hiren's boot CD/etc.
ddrescue
may be a good idea here if you have a drive you can dupe data to
OR if it is largely stuff that you can lose, copy what you care about and go from there

As for future drive use
If you have had data on the drive that was untouched for many years, the drive itself is probably fine if nothing else pops up(check SMART data)
Check your drives more often so they can use their ECC/whatever as it can only correct so much

I thought I'd manage but I couldn't. It made me spend more time on twitter and I have to say it's very funny, especially with the easy GIF inclusion.
The things that got to me was that everywhere I was the IP was banned because my phone has a dynamic IP I think and also my home fiber it changes locations or something. I am not sure what Virgin is doing but somehow my location doesn't always appear the same so 4chins banned it for "abuse".

Why don’t I see more people signing their social media posts with a public key to ensure that, should their account ever get hacked, any postings made by the intruder can be forcefully disowned? It would also prevent impersonator accounts it seems like. Sorry for awkward wording I am high as fuck right now. Also my brother wants to build a website using my pc, are there risks to doing that without paving over windows with a fresh install considering I have lots of software installed and never bothered to check signatures?

>>
>>106576611
each hack used increases the chance it will be caught and patched, most people don't have to fear getting hacked because wasting exploit/hack to impersonate a low value target is wasting money. This website is a perfect example, the most value you can usually get successfully impersonating another anon is a few laughs, otherwise it is a waste of time

>Also my brother wants to build a website using my pc
If you happen to have left unpatched software on the machine that if exploited could allow for remote code execution then yeah that would be a potential problem, best practice is to keep internet exposed servers unpolluted from typical daily personal computer uses

both will be fine for this, Nvidia's GPU not being great for linux doesn't mean even the most basic use will cause issues, it is like when gamers complain about only 60fps instead of 144fps, it is fine for most people

You have to use a VPN or private tracker in burgerland or you'll get copyright strikes on your ISP account. Malware from video files isn't any more a thing than it was 20 years ago of that's what you're asking

>>
>>106579229
your connection to archive.org uses https, which means your ISP doesn't know which page on archive.org you're looking at

It is still very much against copyright to distribute or obtain copyrighted material from it without permission, it is just rarely enforced. I don't know how ISPs know what you torrented, if you use a VPN while torrenting thought you should be fine like that anon said

Recently had a fire in my building from a unit on the floor below me. No damage to any of my stuff but there was a shit ton of smoke in my unit and my PC was on at the time breathing all that shit in. Landlord says cleaners are coming by on monday to get the smoke smell out of everything and he said they said to leave electronics behind so they can bag them and clean them. Should I actually let them take my PC to clean or should I just do it myself? My biggest concern is the 6900xt in there I paid $200 over msrp on and lost the proof of purchase for. Cursory look inside the case there's a few scattered soot flakes in there but not as much as I thought. if I take it out before they take the case, clean it myself, and then it winds up not working later do you guys think insurance will be like "we're not paying for that we didn't see it in there when the cleaners took it" ? I haven't turned it on since the fire I'm scared to until it gets cleaned, but I probably should before they come so I can try and salvage data right?

Just clean it yourself, maybe repaste it while at it. If your PC wasn't running anything GPU intensive, chances are there's absolutely no damage, and you only need to clean out the heatsink so it cools properly. If even.

ive been looking for an application that combined personal knowledge management like obsidian and deep media tracking like lastfm or letterboxd, but FOSS and selfhostable. is anyone aware of such a thing?
I currently use Joplin, and was looking at pairing it with Yamtrack and setting up some sort of RSS feed to fill in gaps, but I was wondering if anyone was aware of either a suite of tools that performed each more robustly that I could manage with a dashboard or one that was all-in-one. I don‘t want to create accounts on services like spotify, last fm, letterboxd, backloggd, etc even to pull an api key to access their databases, and “freemium“ is not an option such as tools like ryot.
