17 base or 17 pro coming from 12 mini?

I was 100% set on the base 17 prior to holding them both today. I think the unibody construction is setting something off in my monkey brain.

I am the opposite of a power user but I also upgrade every five years absolute minimum. So I think the 12gb RAM and pro chip, vapor chamber and A19 pro might be worth $300 just for future proofing. For example my mom got her 12 pro at the same time I got my 12 mini, her 12 pro is a lot smoother in 2025 whereas my mini is almost fubar (70% battery health, camera doesn't work).

As far as other features I would use, the LIDAR and USB 3 are about it. I sync my phone with a cable and measure a lot of shit in the field for work.

Also, I plan on getting 256gb because I'm still sitting just under 128gb on my 2020 phone. But does the increased photo and video size of the pro camera mean I'm going to hit 256gb way sooner?

i dont think its worth it in your case. go with pro if you will get use out of the ub and cameras. chip ont make any difference. i bought 128gb phone 5 years ago and last year i got it down to under 10% free space. kept ignoring it until a few months later i noticed the permanent notification went away along with about 11k of whatsapp photos and videos. if you are type of user like me who takes a lot of videos and photos, likes to hoard stuff and cant bother with clening up,then it might be wise to consider 512gb version. 5 years is a long time and i feel like iphone 17 will still run great by then and you dont want to be forced to buy new one just because you are running out of space

Well if you like the design of the 17PM then go for it. I upgraded from the 14PM to a refurbished 16PM a few months ago because of the leaks. Stainless steel and titanium are so much better than aluminum you'll feel the downgrade right away and the duo tone they got going is legitimately so ugly that it triggers my 'tism — especially the orange version.
