Can I use low profile keycaps on regular switches?
>>106713914No, the stem on the keycaps will be different. Unless they're made specifically for choc V2s (since they use MX style stems) but I don't know if there are any keycap sets like that you can buy separately.

I can't stop buying keycaps and switches.
>>106714397the keycaps I want cost more than my fucking entire alu board but it’s a pretty obscure profile so if I don’t fall for the FOMO and get them now I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever be able to get them.
Bought a Glorious Gaming GPBT Backlit Keycaps set, and the quality is shit, and I honestly didn't feel any difference between my ABS shit. Was I memed with that PBT vs ABS shit? In fact, they felt worse. And it's not like I'll suffer through lettering disappearing over the years as it's shine-through anyway, there's no printing. And if they somehow degrade, then I'll just buy another set of ABS on Aliexpress for 3x less in 5 years. Still more profitable.Thank god I bought from Amazon, they went back today.
>>106714864The plastic used isn't what determines what kind of texture it has, that's the mold. The difference between ABS & PBT is mostly that the former is going to lose its texture and shine up within months.
>>106714919holy kek
Been using a Keychron V1 with the stock brown switches for a while now.Kinda don't like 2 things about it: I should have gotten a TKL instead of 75%, as I do actually miss the end and insert keys. And as for the switches, I'd like the activation point to feel (and maybe sound) more snappy.Otherwise it has been fine.Any recs in the €80 - €150 range?
I feel the compulsive need to buy every membrane keyboard I see.
They don't get it. I feel like Buffalo Bill.
Okay give me a mechanical keyboard with numpad that is not tranny pipeline
>>106714065I'd say so

>>106714050Intro extras? Where?>>106716204https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-b104-keyboard/
I've been using mechanical keyboards so long that I can't even remember why I think they're good. If some newbie asks me why he should consider a mechanical keyboard instead of a cheap membrane board all I can say is "I don't know"
>>106714864This is the problem with talking about things through 'specs' like 'ABS vs PBT', you'll say something like 'PBT is better' thinking of the advantages of Hammerworks CRP over GMK, and some anon listening to you will take that as advice to buy "Glorious Gaming GPBT Backlit Keycaps"
>>106716587Dumb luck. Discord seller put it up again and said he had some extras left but he forgot to update everyone so I went for it. I'm a tactile/clicky lifer enjoying my box white v2s so I'll use this Intro to experiment with different linears. My monsgeek M5 has an Alu plate so it kind of lends itself to non-linears by default which is just fine for my Kailh switches so I got the extra plates in CF and PP for the Intro to try different combinations and give linears a fair chance. It works out for me desu one linear and one clicky, I'll absolutely not look at another group buy or extra sale ever after this.
Ok I did it, I trooned out, I ordered my first 65%. Gonna build it with either Gateron Lanes or Lichix Raw Silent tactiles.>>106717687It's a good selection of plates. CF is really useful to have because sometimes a board needs to sound brighter/clackier and CF is an easy way to accomplish that. My brother's Neo80 with gateron milk-tops and shenpo keycaps was too thocky on aluminum so I switched to CF and that fixed it.
>>106717748my problem with 65% and hhkbs is 1.75U is just long enough to feel like the key needs stabs and just short enough not to be able to have them. 1.75U right shift just fucking sucks and I hate board that put fn to the right of right shift, or worse in the case of a lot of 65% where it’s right shift-> up arrow-> fn
>>106714919I take all my lesser-used keys like F1 thru 12, insert, lock/pause etc and occasionally swap the caps with the keys 1 to 5, since they're heavily used in the games I play and it helps everything shine evenly. The actual hard keys are pipe, right shift, etc.
Newfren here, not too familiar with this stuff myself but a friend of mine who was got me a Keychron Q6 last year. Unfortunately some of the switches are starting to not register presses, so I'm thinking I might have to replace them with something better.Current (factory) switches are gateron browns, and I don't really think I have much in terms of preference other than wanting something that feels at least vaguely similar (ie. tactile, not linear) and is of good quality. Also something with backlighting support I suppose. What are some good options? Ideally looking for something reliable that won't fail on me within another year even if it does cost a little more.
>>106718886>Unfortunately some of the switches are starting to not register pressesAfter one year???? What the fuck
I need keyboard with multimedia buttons
>>106718886Well first thing I would do is steal switches from unused keys and swap them in to see if that fixes the problem. If not your problem is PCB-related and more serious. If it does fix the problem, then I'd buy 10 or 20 more gateron jupiter brown switches if you can, and hope that the problem was just a couple bad ones. Replacing 108 switches is expensive, so if you don't have to, I wouldn't.
>>106718930Yup, caught me by surprise as well. Pretty sure the first key to start doing it was Ctrl and the issue vanished after I swapped the switches for left/right Ctrl around since I never use the latter.>>106718969Fair enough, and yeah, swapping with another key was the first thing I tried and that fixed it. Honestly not sure how I feel about more Gateron now given how quickly the original switches failed but I suppose it's always an option.
>>106718998Gateron wouldn't be my first choice for tactiles with their recent double-typing problems but it's always tacky to mix different switches, and buying a full board's worth it going to put you out 30-50 bucks
>>106718998I wish I had a good answer for you but I still haven't found a tactile switch I actually like. Gateron browns are so light they're basically linears though.
>>106718886>What are some good options?Nothing beats Cherry Browns broken-in and then lubed, filmed, spring-swapped.
>>106718930nta but are mechanical keyboards just extremely low-quality and prone to failure by default?I had a HyperX Alloy that failed after ~2 years and another Genesis Thor which lasted even shortermy membrane Dell has already surpassed both in terms of longevity at like 1/4 of the price

>>106719537>nta but are mechanical keyboards just extremely low-quality and prone to failure by default? The only board of mine that ever failed (and the switches failed, not the board itself) was daily driven for 8 years. But I've never bought the cheap shit
>>106713897I got custom keycaps from WASD keyboards on my ancient Chinese TKL board, am I cool enough for this sub?
>>106719639Anybody is welcome or "cool enough" to participate as long as they come into it with an open mind and open heart and open wallet
>>106718930There's a reason back then we switched to comfy reliable membrane, but of course zoomers had to dust back shitty mechanical meme. Much like they're dusting muh 00's era shityty digicams after dusting muh oldass le retro cameras, on top of dusting those old useless pokemon cards.
I think the hobby is going to die in the long term because nearly everyone who got into mechanical keyboards did so because they read something saying it was better for gaming. Now we have hall effect boards and none of those "what's the best keyboard for gaming?" articles/ChatGPT responses/etc are going to say mechanicals anymore. So the stream of new converts that has been keeping it alive is going to dry up.
>>106720357We're going back and you can't stop it.
>>106720475what are you talking about? HE is just another gimmick you can get tacked on to custom boards now
>>106720357>There's a reason back then we switched to comfy reliable membraneYea, to cut costs as much as possible.
>>106721213Also to make them quieter. Mechanical keyboards are only silent when compared to the machine gun cacophony of the old olympias and ibm selectrics.
>>106721367There have been mechanical boards that are as quiet, if not quieter, than a regular rubber dome board for at least a decade now.
>>106714919Wash your hands. Dirt is abrasive.
>>106720475Nah, the more gaming keyboards evolve, the further away from a good typing experience they become. No one wants to program with a wooting he80. There will be two distinct categories of "gaming keyboard" and "typing keyboard"
>>106721458This is true. I once used my keyboard a few times after coming home from working a horse show with my fingers full of that awful ultra-fine sand footing, and in just a few days I put a serious shine on my keycaps.I have since started wearing gloves when I do that work
>>106719537Switches just don't last very long. I've come to accept you need to buy new switches every 2 years. It's ok really. The actual PCB never wears out

>>106722996Cherry switches regularly last over half a decade. Stop buying meme switch trash.
>>106722957How is a hall effect with normal 2mm actuation depth and no gamer gimmicks enabled any different from typing on a Cherry linear, other than being smoother?
>>106723878NTA but no chatter, inherent NKRO, lifespan that's basically infinite because there are no contacts to wear out.
>tfw too late to the hobby by two yearsI missed out on GMK's Carbon R3 CDATA and Cinder sets. Oh well
>>106723747>regularly last over half a decadeInteresting choice of words. Perhaps "over half a decade" does sound impressive until you realize it translates to "5 years", after which even the most expensive switches are more likely to shit the bed than a membrane keyboard which cost an order of magnitude less.
>>106724069GMK sets are overrated anyway
https://keyboard-layout-try-out.pages.dev/I used this site and I don't feel any big difference between the layouts. I only tested them for a few minutes each, but they all have some difficult to type words. I guess there is a statistical difference but if I can't quicly feel it, is there any point in investing so much time to learn a new one?
>>106723747>over half a decadekek
>>106724113yes we all know membrane keyboards last a long timeif that's all that matters to you (and key count of course) then use that. you don't have to be a nigger, and if you do, you can do it somewhere else
>>106725697I accept your concession.
>>106725779what did I concede to? that you're a nigger? ok
>>106724113Maybe you don't realize this, but when I say they last over half a decade, I am intentionally choosing a non-controversial conservative estimate, with the word "over" being important here. Vast majority of people will have theirs last much longer than that. The point of my saying this is that the worst case scenario should still last more than twice as long as what anon was experiencing as normal lifespan for whatever dogshit switches he was buying. You have bizarrely misread this post as 'trying to make 5 years sound like a long time' to give yourself an excuse to blather about your own particular "membrane > mechanical" hobbyhorse, because you are an annoying faggot

We have a small handful of posters who come in here with a massive chip on their shoulder, sometimes because these boards are out of their budget, sometimes for other reasons. This is just part and parcel of having a general thread on 4chan, and the sooner you learn how to ignore their transparent provocations the happier you'll be.
>>106725799I understand you are probably talking about some enthusiast or legendary Japanese MX print but consumer tier cherrys will be lucky to last 5 years. You are seriously overestimating the longevity of your grandpa tier switches. I have a grave of cherry boards that didn't last 5 years

I got myself one of Keychron's HE boards (TKL with wooden accents, can't be fucked to find the model name lol) since prices on the tech have come down a decent bit. I can see what the fuss is for typing, this is retardedly fucking smooth. Not sure if I can get on with its gaming features though (mostly because I usually use controller for the games I play on PC anyway, and some of the HE-specific features are a labyrinthine goddamn nightmare to configure with Keychron's launcher).Slapped on a set of MTNU keycaps though. As decent as Keychron's stock caps are for the price, they're a bit too tall for my liking on this board.

my Mr. Suit is easily my greatest mkg-related purchase ever. i don't feel like i'm missing out on anything at all.it may be time for me to change switches though. i'm getting bored of my alpacas. what's a better linear out there at a similar weight? (~60) back then i think these were the best but i haven't been in the scene anymore.
I love my ancient keyboard with dirty keycaps.
>>106733955>how does it compare to mt3?Not him but MTNU is a lot more like Cherry. The face feels a little less closed-in than MT3, and the ridge around the face of the cap is less pronounced. The sound is less thin and glassy than MT3's (I have only tried ABS MT3) and the spacebar sound is miles better. The F&F, color, etc is pretty much unimpeachable.
>>106736196Is that an old photo? Because I don't see a speck of dirt
>>106733955Nah, I'm using GMK Dolch (one of the rare times they do PBT instead of ABS). I'm a big fan of the profile so far. I like that it's not as tall as MT3. This anon here >>106736258 kinda covered it - MTNU basically feels like MT3 but as short as Cherry.

Is the coarse, porous feeling of keycaps you get on those old beige and white keyboards exclusive to double shot PBT keycaps or can I get that feel with double shot ABS keycaps too?
>>106739276>can I get that feel with double shot ABS keycaps too?You can but it will eventually rub off. The texture is applied by the mold, it's not an inherent property of the plastic, and not all PBT keycaps are equally coarse-grained to the touch. Is there anything like the Nuphy air75 v3 but with clicky keys? I'm a cherry blue fan but want to try low profile and also my first non-full-size
How much do keycap profiles matter for someone who isn't that knowledgeable about keyboards (me)?I'm looking for a keyboard in the below $200 range that is white case/ white and/or light blue keycaps, and ideally has wood accents. It needs to match the decor so someone won't be too pissed discovering a new Fractal North pc in the house.I was thinking a white Keychron K10 HE with Akko Carolina Blue keycaps (whenever it comes back in stock). I'm only familiar with Dell/Lenovo workstation keyboards and my Ducky Shine 3 with Cherry brown switches I got years ago.Do keycaps profile matter to someone who doesn't know much about keyboards? How bad will the change be from Cherry Browns to hall-effect/magnetic switches? Are the products I listed above sensible or even compatible?
Is there any reason to grab something more expensive than a keychron K8 HE if I want to try HE switches out? Looking for a tkl board without some weird format where ins/home/pgup/del/end/pgdn aren't guaranteed. Would there be a cheaper option that would give me better results?
>>106743630There's lofree and morgrie keyboards. I can't really recommend any of them though, especially not nuphy. I had a nuphy air75, but it wasn't a v3. I didn't like it. There were all kinds of little annoyances with the layout. IIRC it had no insert and a fucking dedicated cortana button and no via support to change it, as well as some shitty behavior with function key lock that I think I remember I had to flash the board to even get. It felt like it was designed for a HR roastie, not someone actually productive. That v3 should have some equivalent of blue switches and the kinds of problems I had may have been fixed by now but honestly, low profile is a meme, and not worth it imo. Think about how the switch will actually feel with the bump at the very top and little travel in general, because that's how low profile tactiles are, and a conventional blue has a bump in the middle and much more travel. I don't think you actually want low profile, I think you just want lower front case height. Either that or you're getting married to the aesthetics that don't actually matter and you will stop caring about after actually having to use the thing for a few hours.
>>106743751You're not really going to get anything nice with wood without spending a small fortune. A dinky, boring keychron is basically it unless you want to dump a bunch of money on on a sonnet or something, which you sound like you definitely don't and don't really know what you want.Key profiles are just preference. you have no doubt used a cherry profile before since it's basically standard and you have also no doubt used a flat profile if you have ever touched a laptop in your life. XDA is sort of like that in the sense that it is level, but not as short. You have probably used OEM before without even realizing it, which is just slightly taller than cherry. then you have SA which is very tall and round. And you have a bunch of less common profiles that just give very different key feel like MT3 that if you aren't actively looking for you shouldn't concern yourself with.>How bad will the change be from Cherry Browns to hall-effect/magnetic switches?Hall effect switches are linear. Browns have such a subtle bump that they are practically linear themselves so you probably won't care all that much. It's not gonna be all that different.

Your high of indulging in the novelty of a new toy has worn off>Why does this always happen? You realise you don't really care much for the new keyboard. Figure out why and decide what to do it
>>106749126Meant for>>106746369
>>106746369>got bored with itBruh, it's a keyboard. It's not meant to be exciting, it's meant to be useful.
where can I find straight non coiled cables on aliexpress?
>>106746369"Because you're not done yet. This was an imporant successful step on your journey, and you had a few weeks to savour that success, but now you must continue on that long road."
>>106746369Blud thinks keyboards are entertainment
>>106746369There are still many moments ahead when your keyboard will bring you conscious joy, and the moments in which you are not conscious of it will yet be elevated because you are more comfortable now than you were before. The thrill of novelty is past, and the thing which remains is so much smaller than the flashing thrill of novelty that it seems like nothing in comparison, but the tiny way in which you have improved the environment in which you live will be a constant little source of comfort, the sum of which over the long run will dwarf that brief intense excitement which you presently miss.
>>106748848I don't see why not.
I want to try a full board with support for hall effect switches and a split spacebar. Is there any way to make a regular full board use two keys for spacebar?
>>106752824lots of custom boards have split space as an option, but usually only as a solder PCB you have to do yourself. but full size custom boards are unironically pretty rare even in just regular MX configuration. I don't even know about HE
>>106752877Is there a good reference for making or using custom boards?I've built a keyboard by picking a case, pcb, switches, etc, but I'm not sure where to begin with actual customization.
How can I ask for completely customized keyboard?
>>106752993>Is there a good reference for making or using custom boards?you mean like a DIY project? I don't know but I'm sure it wouldn't actually be that difficult to design your own PCB, especially if it's just MX. HE I have absolutely no idea about.I was just talking about custom in the sense that the board isn't prebuilt and the manufacturer gives you a bunch of options between case, plate, PCB, etcUsually split space is only useful on like 40% boards where you're forced to use fn layers to get back regular functionality. What do you want it for on a 100% anyway?
Recently bought this thing because it was one of the few ones I could find that actually met all my demands:>60%>iso layout>alt/ctrl/super on both sides of the space bar, or at least keys I could remap to that>blue switches or something comparable>Actually ships to where I live. Everything else I could find only ships to the UK it seems. The issue is that it's a 30 euro thing and some of the reviews do say it breaks easily while others say they had it for years without issues so it's probably a gamble and it does feel kind of like it's not all that solidly built when typing on it but I have to say in many ways it actually types better than the full size Das Keyboard Model S I had before this though it's also kind of different. I hope it won't break. It's called UrChoiceLtd, the company, and its stuff is actually so cheap that it makes one really suspicious.
>>106713897Why do you faggots need hiragana on your keycaps when you can't even write in Japanese?
>>106754003because it looks cool nigga, damn
>>106722774what are keycaps like this called?
>>106754026In terms of what, anon?>shape/profile?>typeface?>material?>legend-printing method?
>>106754003You're this idiot OP, but instead of titty armor it's sublegends on keycaps.
>>106754003It's also such a random selection.Anyway, almost no one in Japan still uses kana input. Flick input on a mobile phone is a lot more efficient than using romanized input though but a normal keyboard doesn't have touch screens.
>>106754041the shape and profile. Something about it is very satisfying.
>>106754069'High profile spherical' is what you'd look for to find similar caps.
>>106754081thanks anon
>>106754069looks like ada maybe, but sa is easier to find. the manual doesn't say what the keycap profile is, so I'm just guessing.
>>106754003最適に出来れば、 JIS is 1 whole keystroke less per vowel compared to some Romaji IMEbut I think it's just become a specialty layout, like with dvorak/colemack
>>106754189oh yeah ada is what i'm looking for. beautiful
