It's my last day at company ABC, going to XYZ for a 30K raise. Glad to finally leave this place. But all but one of my interviewers at the new place was Indian...but that's no worse than the current gig. And at least the new project requires you to be an American citizen. But I do still wish they weren't Indian.

>>
>think something happened but it didn't
>clock into work the next day
>foreboding sense of panic
>>
>>106778652
planification is a real word in french but it's how you translate "planning"(verb) not "plan"(noun)

also idk about parisean french but in quebec i've seen/heard it used to refer to planning sessions, like
>nous attendons le planification
=
>we are attending the planning(meeting)

also not really related but funny imo, for some reason tons of french people use "women" for singular even though it doesnt even work that way in french. but you hear "it is/was a women" constantly and they don't do the same for males. they will use man/men properly but never say "woman" for some reason
>>
>>106778692

Kugelschreiber is a real word in German but that doesn't mean I am using it when I speak English lol

haven't noticed that but honestly that would be the least of my worries because that would mean I could at least understand the rest of the crap they are trying to tell me

Pretty happy. 32 years old and just hit $1.1 M (after hitting $1M just a month ago with the crazy stock market gains). Absolutely hate my high-paying stressful big tech job and they are trying to force me to RTO, so I will probably quit for a few months until I get bored and find a lower paying more chill local job around here. Getting married and having kids in the next few years though so I definitely can't early retire yet and need to save a lot more.

I have had 1 meeting all week. Is this what its like when the government shutdowns? Can this happen monthly?
>>
What's your on call rotation like? I'm not sure if mine is typical. Once every four weeks, for a full week. I've been paged three times this year, latest was 7pm. We manage everything from the database, to the code, to the cdn. Microservices, terraform, devops shit, etc.

We have an alerts channel for random test failures and shit where if it's working hours, the on call guy has to diagnose the issues and also respond to all of the occasional cust ops requests for things we haven't automated.

I'm starting to get burnt out of it, feels like you're juggling way too many things at once and always at least a bit stressed. Is this just status quo when you work for a FAANG or FAANG wannabe?
>>
>>106779019
When I was on a FAANG team we regularly got paged overnight at 1AM, 2AM, etc. It was hell. Thank god I am at a more chill (lower paying) company now.

We got a new co-op student, he is in a masters degree program, and apparently has experience in his home country, doing similar work to what we do.

I’m beginning to think he faked his experience, he is struggling with like first year or high school level work. And it’s his third (fourth?) week in.
>>
>>106780951
what is his supposed experience? Did he do what the job entails, or are his skills elsewhere? I was a TA in grad school for a hardware class and it was surprising the amount of students that didn't know the absolute basics of hardware, but you could have done basically no hardware as an undergrad and then just taken whatever grad class you wanted

>>
It's 1PM on Friday, therefore I am long done working for the week. I think I will go for a run while the fall weather is so nice and then play some classic WoW for the rest of the evening. Maybe i'll order dominos to treat myself too (just hit a 45min 10k PR this week).

That's why you got complete beginners who were likely interested in it as an elective since they knowingly knew nothing about hardware.
>>

>>106780975
He said he did devops, docker stuff and other ci/cd work for ‘scalable apps, that supported 10,000-100,000s of users with zero/minimal downtime deployments.’ So as a quick dip into our corporate processes and to make sure he has the access he needs, we have him migrating some docker image builds from Jenkins to Git actions, both being skills he listed when hired.

But his investigation skills are non existent. even things like saying oh I got the same error again, please suggest another fix. but it’s just the exit code being the same and some other part is breaking now.

Man literally has a copilot button that would have told him the issue, if he didn’t want to scroll down to see the actual issue.

People like that are the exact reason hiring is so fucked in tech. There's no way to filter them out.

Ultimately, there are just those in this world who can figure out something they haven't seen before, and those who can't. You can't teach it. You got it or you don't.
>>
>>106781196
Yeah but it was annoying because they would come in to office hours not understanding anything and wanting me to just blindly tell them all the undergrad concepts so they could do the homework, or waive requirements because they didn't understand it. If you don't know the background and are unwilling to learn them, you shouldn't take the class.

I am continuously surprised how horribly bad people are. I have basically stopped learning after I graduated, and I never even tried that hard.
I am neither a high IQ autist nor a linux wizard of any kind.

But watching some of my coworkers (be they new grads or 10 YOE "seniors") struggle to use a simple Linux terminal, debug a very simple issue ("how could I ever possibly know the current value of this variable?" - print it? attach a debugger? never heard of it, I will just continue blind guessing), fail to read logs of a docker container even though "software integration" is one of their main jobs continues to blow my mind.
>>
>>106781840
>There's no way to filter them out.
???
the way to filter them out is to give them the tools they will use and see if they have actual skills or have ever used them in the first place
>>
>>106782437
That works if you already have them in for an interview maybe. If you force applicants to do a takehome (and you aren't FANG), you're going to inadvertently filter out engineers who are good enough to be picky about doing unpaid labor.

Ok, sorry for not making assumptions based on 0 evidence. But your point that doesn't change anything though. If you find out in the interview that they're not capable, you already wasted time reading their application, scheduling, background checking. You can't interview everyone. And if you just choose people who's resumes are more appealing, you get grifters and liars. Hence, hiring is fucked.
>>
I had a phone call with two recruiters from two different companies on Tuesday, 3 days ago. One asked me to send him a more tailored resume which I did the next day and the other said I would be a great fit and that their team would contact me "shortly".

We’ve all lived the nightmare. A new developer shows up at work, and you try to be welcoming, but he can’t seem to get up to speed; the questions he asks reveal basic ignorance; and his work, when it finally emerges, is so kludgey that it ultimately must be rewritten from scratch by more competent people. And yet his interviewers—and/or the HR department, if your company has been infested by that bureaucratic parasite—swear that they only hire above-average/A-level/top-1% people.

It’s a big problem, especially now. There’s a boom on. I get harassing emails from recruiters every day. Everyone’s desperate to hire developers…but developers are not fungible. A great coder can easily be 50 times more productive than a mediocre one, while bad ones ultimately have negative productivity. Hiring one is a terrible mistake for any organization; for a startup, it can be a catastrophic company-killer. So how can it happen so often?

Like many of the hangovers that haunt modern software engineering, this is ultimately mostly Microsoft’s fault. Back when they were the evil empire where everyone secretly wanted to work, they were famous for their “brain-teaser” interview questions – Why are manhole covers round? – and, of course, they asked new university graduates about computer science theory; “Write me a binary search.”

So what should a real interview consist of? Let me offer a humble proposal: don’t interview anyone who hasn’t accomplished anything. Ever. There is no excuse for software developers who don’t have a site, app, or service they can point to and say, “I did this, all by myself!” in a world where Google App Engine and Amazon Web Services have free service tiers, and it costs all of $25 to register as an Android developer and publish an app on the Android Market.

I got a case study to you guys if you're part of leadership. Curious if I spin the chessboard, what would even the best move be.

Team A got decimated by layoffs and the members left behind joined Team B. Team A did a lot of stuff in the grey area to please the business and got things done. Team B is strictly by the books and their process takes significantly longer. A lot of our business units are now complaining about how slow things are getting and how the processes are significantly cumbersome to go through. (Which I do understand, it does look like the business needs to enter 3-4 different systems to get shit done compared to before and a day or twos work is now extended to at least 2 weeks or more). A lot of members from Team A who moved to Team B are extremely unhappy too due to the new processes and are walking out. (Lots of senior members too)
What should Team B leadership do to maintain their members? Team B's workload increased by a lot due to taking over a ton of work and it's starting to look like they won't be able to get enough people to maintain the load anytime soon.

If anyone complains tell them these are the rules and to take it up with your superiors.
>>
>>106784035
desu I think it's a little more nuanced then that. From what I was hearing leadership was okay with Team A in doing things in the "grey". The only reason Team B survived was that they had a much bigger operation and piece of the pie.

Perhaps the reason they had a bigger operation is because they did things by the book.

If you are the dude that does the shady stuff you are the most expendable dude.
People willing to sacrifice their integrity to advance are a dime a dozen, while people who follow the rules are a rare breed.

If shit hits the fan you absolutely need to clean guys to save face.
You think your superior will ever defend you if you broke the rules?
If you think so, then ask him and get his written permission.

NTA you need atleast 12-24 months of savings (expenses +400 extra) if you lose a job since alot of people are waiting 8-12 months to get a job application through the market. If it was 2 month turnover rate for job loss to job you could get away with 6 months.

Well obviously you got 2 choices. You work for a job with good pay but might struggle at or you get comfy with a lower paying job that you are good at. You might get lucky like me and have a boring job that pays great.

The advice is to make your own judgement based upon all the information you can gather.

The main thing is avoid Jeet bosses at all costs. You won't escape every jeet, but avoiding having a jeet boss is a 1. Priority. number 2 is obviously your pay and 3. your mental sanity/vibes you get. Everything else is kind of irrelevant unless you are getting dog shit tier benefits.

doing any type of work will go the way of agriculture only a small % will be doing it and no one will really want to do it. The more work that is required to be done the lower the pay. Eventually to get anything done correctly you will have to do it yourself or help within a community. Work for pay will be a thing of the past, or rather the definition of work will change so much we couldnt recognize it today. This is why when you go back in history things actually get better and more skilled was required. It took forever to accomplish a task but there was no other choice. The trade was a "calling" done as something higher than your self often for some type of deity, church, ideology, family. We did not worry about the economic implications of building a pyramid or an ancient light tower. It was made for the glory of God and no amount of money could buy that.

i paid sam hyde $100 two different times to read my super chat " Im Gay." best money ive ever spent . He just gives this dead stare into the camera and says it. I dont think its really funny to anyone but me. Anyways all work is surrogate work and is unfulfilling.

>get my biyearly "bro I have an idea I just need a programmer" message.
>referral from a friend in common who I actually like.
>think I'll be polite this time, give him some tips but reject his offer since it's clear, by his first messages, that it's gonna be shit.
>he wants to meet today (Day of the Lord, Saturday)
>of course I refuse
>he then says he can explain it by message "but needs me to sign an nda"
>follows it up with "so I can be sure you won't go around selling this solution"
>aka it's gonna be a dense and retarded NDA, including non-competes and whatnot
>tell him I won't sign anything this early
>he gives up on the spot, says he'll look for someone else
Why are ideabros so retarded? It's obvious he won't find any good dev willing to get into this nonsense.
At least i can rest easy knowing he'll get scammed by jeets (like all ideabros eventually are).
>>
>>106789680
Good morning sir.
I was born in Canada so I am Canadian ok?? Bastard bitch.
>>
>>106792883
It's not retarded if it's a good idea. Zuckerberg ripped off the Winklevoss twins' idea.
>>
what do you do when you feel like your coworkers are a bunch of mediocre retards that have issues learning new stuff, and that you should be paid a lot more based on your knowledge and experience, but you also feel like a hack and are lazy to get certs?
generic answers please, I'm not a dev.
>>
>>106792978
But Zuckerberg was a tech bro who just ripped off other people. I wouldn't call him an ideabro.
Ideabros are the type who watched one too many Ted Talks and believe that "ideas are worth more than gold!" or whatever. They unironically think they're the first ones to imagine a certain "app", even if the app store has thousands of entries already. And, most importantly, they have no clue of what tech is. They don't know anything other than scrolling social media and, yet, are certain they have the background to lead a tech endeavor.
It's always a bit painful to interact with these people, they'll eventually drop something like "I could do the programming but I'll be too busy closing deals", as if Software Engineering were just something he could pick up in a weekend.
>>
Bros i'm currently a computer science student and seeing IA fucking doing all those videos and shit is making me sweat hard as FUCK, is there any field in IT that's safe from IA or am I doomed?
>>
>>106793195
>But Zuckerberg was a tech bro who just ripped off other people.
nta but how did you write this and were not able to reflect on it?
someone came and offered a job and told you to sign a NDA... you are the one who could steal their idea. yet you refuse to acknowledge that fact.
>>
>>106792883
It's probably not a good idea if he's asking you on a goddamn Saturday
>>
>>106793220
>who could steal their idea
ideas cannot be stolen anon and cannot be protected by NDAs
your "uber but for pets" idea is public domain level of abstraction

NDAs protect specific implementations like algorithms, data pipelines, or unique methods.
Something ideabros don't have.

the fact that ideabros don't even know that, proves how useless they are
>>
>>106793313
>missing the point this hard
ok, whatever you say.
>>
>>106793220
>you are the one who could steal their idea
Sorry, I still have my foreskin.
>>
>>106793313
I get what you're saying, but I don't wanna get into legalese nonsense because I once signed an NDA with someone I had no intention of doing business with.
>>
>>106793338
you are the one missing the point I'm afraid
their idea is not protected and NDA is useless
therefore asking them to sign an NDA this early is worthless and betrays their incompetence
>>
>>106793354
I didn't say you should.
Quite the opposite.
Stay the fuck away cause he is completely clueless.
If there was any value to what he was saying he could tell the gist of it over the phone.
And then you sing an NDA to protect his "groundbreaking" algorithm or something which makes his product stand out.
>>
>>106793377
>their idea is not protected and NDA is useless
anon, if they are paying you, they have a right to tell you to shut up about your job and to keep the stuff they pay you to write "theirs"

>incompetence
there is a reason they are hiring you in the first place...

how do you not understand that you are not a "person" to capitalists, but a tool? and I'm not defending anyone here, but I'm stating how things are. this is how the game is played.
>>
>>106793405
>If there was any value to what he was saying he could tell the gist of it over the phone.
Yeah, I agree with this entirely. Wouldn't hurt for him to say "So, I really like boats and the solution relates to boat rental" or whatever retarded idea he had. The fact that he can't describe it in a non-expository way shows he's completely clueless about what he wants.
>>
>>106793417
>how do you not understand that you are not a "person" to capitalists
lol he's not "le evil capitalist", he's just a misguided dude. Despite calling him retarded multiple times, I know him irl and he's not a "well off capitalist" - he's just a cool dude. Once again, he's just an ideabro who thinks he'll be the next Steve Jobs.

Back home after spending months on a project living out of a hotel room. Now I am creating a million tasks for myself to do here even though I'm burnt the fuck out. Annoyed because I keep thinking about all the things I want to do while having no energy to do them. This is the true nature of work. Time off, vacation time, etc is just a fucking trap because you'll hardly feel like doing anything except sitting on your ass or laying in bed.

literally me. Do you also have ADHD and take meds for them? Not only do i work a lot for work itself but i take on lots of personal projects and it makes me feel burned out. Personal projects do look good on resumes though
>>
>>106796427
When I was a child the doctor that diagnosed me said it was literally the worst case of ADHD he had ever seen. But I'm not on meds. Being on ritalin as a child made me lethargic, isn't it supposed to be a damn stimulant?
>>
>>106796445
>isn't it supposed to be a damn stimulant?
yes but it affects people with ADHD differently i think. I quit cold turkey for about 5 years and eventually got back on it and it improved my mood and enjoyment of work
>>
>>106796427
nta, I've got ADHD+Autism. The double whammy shit. I self-medicate with caffeine. 5 days on, 2 days off. Saturday's I get wicked fucking headaches and I sleep all day. Sunday I'm just inattentive as fuck. I can barely write this sentence. Monday after a hit of coffee, I'm right as rain. Sleep declines over the course of a week until I'm wrekt anyway. 5 days on, 2 days off. Every week.

Aspergers is basically autism, right? I think when i was diagnosed it was treated differently, and now its considered 'on the spectrum'
I work remote and attended an irl meet and was burned out rather quick and just ended up ditching meetings
>>
>>106796588
>Aspergers is basically autism, right?
Yeah pretty much. It's all a spectrum these days.

Is every UX designer just useless?
It takes them 6 to 7 months to come up with a design and then once we are developing it they still change it every week

UX designer here, attached is that design your company paid more than Somalia's GDP for. I'm thinking about having some dicks go into an ass instead. I'll let you know after you've just finished building the fucking thing if I want to change it. Thanks.
>>
>>106796588
Aspergers was on the severe end of autism when it was diagnosed as such.
