Interviewing with a startup today. Rolling for $160k base salary + 0.5-1% equity. Maybe a sign-on bonus.
We could all stand to learn more from Tech Industry leaders.

It's my last day at company ABC, going to XYZ for a 30K raise. Glad to finally leave this place. But all but one of my interviewers at the new place was Indian...but that's no worse than the current gig. And at least the new project requires you to be an American citizen. But I do still wish they weren't Indian.

>>106778652planification is a real word in french but it's how you translate "planning"(verb) not "plan"(noun)also idk about parisean french but in quebec i've seen/heard it used to refer to planning sessions, like>nous attendons le planification=>we are attending the planning(meeting)also not really related but funny imo, for some reason tons of french people use "women" for singular even though it doesnt even work that way in french. but you hear "it is/was a women" constantly and they don't do the same for males. they will use man/men properly but never say "woman" for some reason
>>106778692>planification is a real word in frenchKugelschreiber is a real word in German but that doesn't mean I am using it when I speak English lol>also not really related but funny imo, for some reason tons of french people use "women" for singular even though it doesnt even work that way in french. but you hear "it is/was a women" constantly and they don't do the same for males. they will use man/men properly but never say "woman" for some reasonhaven't noticed that but honestly that would be the least of my worries because that would mean I could at least understand the rest of the crap they are trying to tell me

Well I've been slacking off more lately but today I haven't done anything at all.
I have had 1 meeting all week. Is this what its like when the government shutdowns? Can this happen monthly?
What's your on call rotation like? I'm not sure if mine is typical. Once every four weeks, for a full week. I've been paged three times this year, latest was 7pm. We manage everything from the database, to the code, to the cdn. Microservices, terraform, devops shit, etc.We have an alerts channel for random test failures and shit where if it's working hours, the on call guy has to diagnose the issues and also respond to all of the occasional cust ops requests for things we haven't automated.I'm starting to get burnt out of it, feels like you're juggling way too many things at once and always at least a bit stressed. Is this just status quo when you work for a FAANG or FAANG wannabe?
>>106779019When I was on a FAANG team we regularly got paged overnight at 1AM, 2AM, etc. It was hell. Thank god I am at a more chill (lower paying) company now.
What does "great k8s knowledge" mean in practice? Like yeah I have made a deployment with it once, but AFAIK the real bitch is maintaining and troubleshooting networking issues. Gonna have a quick internal screening to maybe pivot to another team but I don't think I can fake it here

We got a new co-op student, he is in a masters degree program, and apparently has experience in his home country, doing similar work to what we do.I’m beginning to think he faked his experience, he is struggling with like first year or high school level work. And it’s his third (fourth?) week in.
>>106780951what is his supposed experience? Did he do what the job entails, or are his skills elsewhere? I was a TA in grad school for a hardware class and it was surprising the amount of students that didn't know the absolute basics of hardware, but you could have done basically no hardware as an undergrad and then just taken whatever grad class you wanted
>>106780934i'm playing sekiro this weekend
>>106780934Have you tried masturbating and spending 12h a day scrolling?
>>106779019this sounds like how it works at my FAGMAN wannabe company, verbatimit's almost like we're coworkers
>>106779019I'm FAGMAN. On call maybe once every 6 weeks for 3 days. My product doesn't really break that often. I usually just get pulled into something to look into it for 10 minutes and say "not my problem". 12-hour shifts, we make other countries handle the night time
It's 1PM on Friday, therefore I am long done working for the week. I think I will go for a run while the fall weather is so nice and then play some classic WoW for the rest of the evening. Maybe i'll order dominos to treat myself too (just hit a 45min 10k PR this week).
>>106780113Desperate for warehouse wagies yes. AWS is a self sustaining thing at this point.
>>106779019At 17:00 sharp I turn off my phone and whatever happens is not my problem.
>>106780975>no hardware in undergrad then take the classThat's why you got complete beginners who were likely interested in it as an elective since they knowingly knew nothing about hardware.
>>106779019This is CI CD life. Why do you think most of them want to get into backend dev that doesn't require monitoring of 50+ pipelines? I outright refuse to do a lot of devops jobs nowadays.
>hired onto team as a cloud engineer/it project engineer>coworkers all of similar backgrounds (5-10 yoe, 4 year degree)>Turns out we're expected to do our primary job AND t1, 2, and 3 helpdesk >Complete disaster, no project work gets done and people start threatening to leave>Manager agrees to hire a couple interns/t1s so we can actually do our jobs>They make a hiring decision, check resume>10 YOE and a mastersAre hiring managers just incapable of realizing that overqualified employees is a bad thing, or are they plotting something?
>>106781380>Are hiring managers stupid?yes
i don't aknoaf if ifi can fuckolign do this andyfmorefuck falksdfyu a;sdfldskuf
>>106781380Anon, I don't know how to put this lightly. But your manager probably wants you to be the tech support and the new guy to be the cloud engineer.
>Promised raise>Talked to my boss>"We can give you the raise but HR only approves it if you get additional training even though you already have a Master's degree">You have to complete this 15 year old project manager and software architecture course from our internal training portal first>they all take 5 weeks eacham I being taken for a ride here? I just started the course and it's so fucking bad and useless
>just found out i do LITERALLY the same thing as my coworker, same position, same title>I end up fixing his mistakes a lot of times>he is paid 3x more than mewhat the fuck. I'm flabbergasted should i ask for raise or jump ship?
>>106781505ask for a raise unless you can easily jump ship
>>106781505three times more is insane. i he perhaps a citizen while you're there on a work visa?
>>106781415That's my guess, it's just weird because there are 3 other people on my team with similar YOE and job responsibilities on paper. Guessing maybe they'll cut us all at once?I would think needing to fire an entire team you hired personally would signal to c suite that you're incompetent as a leader, but what do I know.
>>106777658Please share the prompt, I want more of this
>>106780975He said he did devops, docker stuff and other ci/cd work for ‘scalable apps, that supported 10,000-100,000s of users with zero/minimal downtime deployments.’ So as a quick dip into our corporate processes and to make sure he has the access he needs, we have him migrating some docker image builds from Jenkins to Git actions, both being skills he listed when hired. But his investigation skills are non existent. even things like saying oh I got the same error again, please suggest another fix. but it’s just the exit code being the same and some other part is breaking now. Man literally has a copilot button that would have told him the issue, if he didn’t want to scroll down to see the actual issue.
>>106781438You are being taken for a ride to give hr “Work”.
>>106780951>>106781720People like that are the exact reason hiring is so fucked in tech. There's no way to filter them out.Ultimately, there are just those in this world who can figure out something they haven't seen before, and those who can't. You can't teach it. You got it or you don't.
>>106781196Yeah but it was annoying because they would come in to office hours not understanding anything and wanting me to just blindly tell them all the undergrad concepts so they could do the homework, or waive requirements because they didn't understand it. If you don't know the background and are unwilling to learn them, you shouldn't take the class.
>>106781840>People like thatpajeetsyou can call them what they arethey're pajeets
>>106781600my brother in Christ, we're both native, in Europe
>>106781906In Germany a senior dev with a masters degree and 10 years of experience can expect like 80k€ while a junior dev with 0-2 years of experience and no degree can expect 35-40k€. There's no way this guy makes 3x as much money as you do.
>>106778043almost 10 yoe, about 100K in the bank, 70k or something in vanguard etfs, maybe 50K across several 401ks, maybe 40K in company stock, no debt, drive 10 year old car, live in shabby apartment, khv, new job salary is 150K
>>106781158>45min 10kThat's pretty impressive! I've been trying to run seriously for the past couple years or so and I'm trying to hit sub 55I think I might run a bit later today too
>>106778043I just spent half my net worth on a meal deal at dunkin donuts
I am continuously surprised how horribly bad people are. I have basically stopped learning after I graduated, and I never even tried that hard.I am neither a high IQ autist nor a linux wizard of any kind. But watching some of my coworkers (be they new grads or 10 YOE "seniors") struggle to use a simple Linux terminal, debug a very simple issue ("how could I ever possibly know the current value of this variable?" - print it? attach a debugger? never heard of it, I will just continue blind guessing), fail to read logs of a docker container even though "software integration" is one of their main jobs continues to blow my mind.
>>106781840>There's no way to filter them out.???the way to filter them out is to give them the tools they will use and see if they have actual skills or have ever used them in the first place
>>106782437That works if you already have them in for an interview maybe. If you force applicants to do a takehome (and you aren't FANG), you're going to inadvertently filter out engineers who are good enough to be picky about doing unpaid labor.
>>106782020No offense, but how do you have so little saved with 10 yoe?
Why are CUDA Engineers paid so much?
IT'S 2025 WHERE THE FUCK IS THE MATRIX ALREADY I WANT TO BE PLUGGED IN
>>106782437>>106782582>to give them the tools they will useI meant to say IN THE INTERVIEW, BEFORE HIRING THEM.this should be obvious to anyone who isn't an absolute retard, but then a lot of people in tech are retarded...
>>106782620Here, I'll plug you in*unzips*
>>106782618It's the future.
>>106782622Ok, sorry for not making assumptions based on 0 evidence. But your point that doesn't change anything though. If you find out in the interview that they're not capable, you already wasted time reading their application, scheduling, background checking. You can't interview everyone. And if you just choose people who's resumes are more appealing, you get grifters and liars. Hence, hiring is fucked.
I had a phone call with two recruiters from two different companies on Tuesday, 3 days ago. One asked me to send him a more tailored resume which I did the next day and the other said I would be a great fit and that their team would contact me "shortly".It's Friday now and I haven't heard from either of them. Do I reach out to contact them or will that make me look too desperate?
i have to qwuity this fucking job hi ahve to quit this lfuckging job i can't fucking take shit
>>106781906>tech in europeAre they paying you in rice? Tech salaries are already dog shit to begin with.
>>106782618Supercomputers and engineering requires CUDA.
>>106782618The supply of cuda engineers is constrained by the fact that most people cannot afford to homelab a distributed computing environment. So the only way to become a Cuda engineer is to "know a guy", or do masters/PhD research at a school with an expensive data center
and there goes another fucking keyboardi swaer this job is costing me in replacing keyboards than i'm being paid

>>106782961Considering how many AI engineers that lead the field have PhD's then it might be prudent to consider a CS PhD in something related.

>>106783037>Is it over for me?if you had any actual interest in tech you'd be using your skills to solve personal problems, to learn something or just for fun...your past job experience doesn't have to be as en employee
>>106783102>>106783117We’ve all lived the nightmare. A new developer shows up at work, and you try to be welcoming, but he can’t seem to get up to speed; the questions he asks reveal basic ignorance; and his work, when it finally emerges, is so kludgey that it ultimately must be rewritten from scratch by more competent people. And yet his interviewers—and/or the HR department, if your company has been infested by that bureaucratic parasite—swear that they only hire above-average/A-level/top-1% people. It’s a big problem, especially now. There’s a boom on. I get harassing emails from recruiters every day. Everyone’s desperate to hire developers…but developers are not fungible. A great coder can easily be 50 times more productive than a mediocre one, while bad ones ultimately have negative productivity. Hiring one is a terrible mistake for any organization; for a startup, it can be a catastrophic company-killer. So how can it happen so often?Like many of the hangovers that haunt modern software engineering, this is ultimately mostly Microsoft’s fault. Back when they were the evil empire where everyone secretly wanted to work, they were famous for their “brain-teaser” interview questions – Why are manhole covers round? – and, of course, they asked new university graduates about computer science theory; “Write me a binary search.”So what should a real interview consist of? Let me offer a humble proposal: don’t interview anyone who hasn’t accomplished anything. Ever. There is no excuse for software developers who don’t have a site, app, or service they can point to and say, “I did this, all by myself!” in a world where Google App Engine and Amazon Web Services have free service tiers, and it costs all of $25 to register as an Android developer and publish an app on the Android Market.

I got a case study to you guys if you're part of leadership. Curious if I spin the chessboard, what would even the best move be.Team A got decimated by layoffs and the members left behind joined Team B. Team A did a lot of stuff in the grey area to please the business and got things done. Team B is strictly by the books and their process takes significantly longer. A lot of our business units are now complaining about how slow things are getting and how the processes are significantly cumbersome to go through. (Which I do understand, it does look like the business needs to enter 3-4 different systems to get shit done compared to before and a day or twos work is now extended to at least 2 weeks or more). A lot of members from Team A who moved to Team B are extremely unhappy too due to the new processes and are walking out. (Lots of senior members too)What should Team B leadership do to maintain their members? Team B's workload increased by a lot due to taking over a ton of work and it's starting to look like they won't be able to get enough people to maintain the load anytime soon.

Work for pay will be a thing of the past, or rather the definition of work will change so much we couldnt recognize it today.
