How do I prevent my battery from exploding?
>>
Can a T480 mirror to an Ultrawide?
>>
>>106785104
Become a chemist and mix something that's better than lithium ion battery
>>
just got a used t480, first time getting a laptop at all, the seller said that the internal battery was fine but the external one is like, fucked, and then he offered to send me an external battery so thats like, in it, I guess, its big. so I just got a fresh install, updated the thunderbolt firmware stuff, um, but I keep getting this popup that says like "Your battery has failed due to normal use and will not charge, please replace etc etc", I installed lenovo vantage and it says both the 'primary' (assuming thats the internal) and the 'secondary' battery are like, fucked and wont charge?? the laptop will only turn on when its plugged in, halp.
>>
>>106785269
>mirror
>to an ultrawide
Why would you mirror 16:9 to ultrawide? Retardation aside, it outputs to my 3440x1440 together with the integrated 1920x1080, both at 60 Hz, as long as it's connected over DP. HDMI works at 30 Hz after some command-line workaround which I've forgotten the details of.

>>106787601
You've been bamboozled. Ask for a refund high enough to cover replacing both.
>>
>>106787727
how do I know um, the batteries aren't like not uh, calibrated? or something? or like not plugged in or like initalized? I dont know... should I like ask him for a partial refund, how much is it to replace the internal and external battery anyways?

I did the like battery reset thing on lenovo vantage, um so I think that like turns it off and charges it to full and then runs it out again? or something? um, the pc is plugged in but wont like turn on so I think thats working as intended? I dont know...
>>
>>106787751
If you get the "failed due to normal wear" message the BMS has killed itself. In this generation this almost always means an actual failure, ie one or more cells dropping low enough that it's dangerous to charge them. Calibration aka gauge reset works only if this hasn't happened yet.

A pair of generic Chinese batteries costs around $50-$60. Buy only ones that you can return, and test them thoroughly after they arrive.
>>
>>106787946
shit ok, uhh, so should i wait for this lenovo vantage like battery reset thing or just try and boot it up now? and then what I just like, ask for a partial refund, of idk, €80? something around that?
>>
>>106787973
You'd be waiting forever. It shouldn't turn off during calibration. One last thing you can do is try charging each of the batteries individually with the other one disconnected.
>>
>>106788154
uh so just like take out the external one and charge it and see what happens and vice versa?
>>
>>106788160
Yes, let it sit like that for an hour or two for each of them and see if it reaches 1%.
>>
T60 bros, we are so back

I love this damn thing if I wasn't doing AAA gaymen I could daily drive it even with the XP SP4 install. I wished I could Penryn swap it but the T7500 is still a good chip.
>>
can I just use an external battery and no internal for the t480
>>
>>106789463
You can, better than leaving a dead one that might swell inside
>>
What's your opinion on the ThinkPad P16 series? They released the Gen3 recently and I was thinking on buying a Gen2
>>
Just bought a 340 will arrive in 2-3 Days
>>
>>106789855
G1/G2 are weird, They cut so many ports with the change from P15/P17 to P16 that it doesn't even have Ethernet.
>>
>>106790045
That's one of my pet pevees with Gen 2. Gen 3 brought back the Ethernet port (RJ45), but ended up cutting it short in other ports. I guess I can circumvent that with a docking station but it is a bit annoying to say the least.
>>
>>106789855
Can't afford one even though I have 20K in the bank.
I'm just too used to be poor.

>thinkpad e14 g6 amd ryzen 7 7735HS 512gb 32gb and 47wh battery
or
>thinkpad t14 g5 with Intel Core Ultra 5 135U vPro 512gb 16gb and 52wh battery
I want to use it for college and light gaming, and I would need it to last 4+ hours without charging. I heard that the build quality of the t14 g5 is better, but is it really that different?

TIL there was an Extreme version of the Merom core processor the T60p has, theoretically it should work right? 2.8/4m/800, I'm not worried about thermals the T60p has a huge copper heatpipe system and if it's really a problem I can just swap a T61 sink.

I'm looking to buy a cheap laptop with Windows 11 solely to run the update software for my electronic instruments. In the past this task would call for a x220 or t440ish device, what models should I be looking at nowadays? I can easily get by with low specs or cheaper build quality as long as it doesn't chug just running the OS.
>>
>>106798542
If you trust yourself not to damage the one soldered USB-C charging port, you can get an Ex80 or Lx80 for peanuts, otherwise Lx90 or L1x G1 for a little more
>>
how troublesome is it to get a new good external battery for a t480? preferably the big one
>>
>>106798620
Thank you very much!
>>
>>106798633
You can't really avoid getting one that's dead on arrival. What you can do is choose a seller that accepts free returns, and test the battery with a few full charges and discharges during the return window.

Even the good ones won't be as good as genuine. The ones advertised as 72 Wh usually hold around 65 Wh and many of them will quickly drift out of calibration if you set charge thresholds.

Anyone used a tablet model for reading manga? I've already got a T480 but wondering if something like an X220 tablet would be as good as something like an iPad for comics, as long as it had a good screen.
>>
>>106800518
I got X1 Titanium just to read manga (and sometimes shitpost and play roguelikes)
Most manga releases are 1400~1600px tall and look like shit even on a 1080p screen, let alone 1366x768
There are chinese upgrade boards that convert external display output to internal lvds for installing better panels but the combined price and effort are not worth it if you just want a cheap reader device, consider X1 Tablet Gen 3 instead.

Anyone running into issues with UMA split settings being ignored? I'm in this situation where the iGPU gets 512MiB regardless of the setting, and this breaks some software I want to use that looks at dedicated memory no matter what, even if the iGPU can dynamically allocate a lot of my RAM.
~> sudo dmesg | grep VRAM

Anyone buy their T480/T490 on Amazon renewed? Just wondering what kind of shape they are in. Couple options available right now for $300 CAD that are refurbished in supposedly "Excellent" condition.
>>
>>106789878
Those are cool. Good on anyone saving them.
>>
so i do graphics dev, need a cheap laptop, and want to kill 2 birds with 1 stone by getting hardware i don't already have for more test coverage. already have a Ryzen+RDNA desktop, and i want to wait until ARM on Linux matures before getting ARM. so i guess INtel, either iGPU or with nVidia dGPU. so what kind of ThinkPad would you rec for ~$500? or which line/model/series? it'd prob be my minimum support target for a 3D graphics app.
>>
best thinkpad for ai diffusion?
>>
>>106803667
Anything with a thunderbolt port for a external GPU.
You arent doing AI shit with a mobile GPU and low VRAM.
Even gaming laptops are horrible for it.
>>
>>106803667
P16 Gen 3
That will be $4000
