i've built many PCs, but now as an uncle i've been asked to build one for a nephew - they want lights. all the RGB shit i've never touched.
all i know is that i want both the lights and the fan speeds to be variable, controlled either through software or a physical dial/button somewhere i guess. maybe the lights relate to temperature, i dunno.
i saw this and thought "great, it has all the dumb shit already" but not clear if the motherboard can actually control the fan speed or not. any ideas here?
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FfQKHx/okinos-aqua-3-microatx-mini-tower-case-okicc-aqua3-matxb-h3ba
>>
>>106785106
The fan speeds for that bundled case should be configurable through the motherboard BIOS, whether it is a DC or PWM fan.
You need to go to the fan control section of the motherboard and switch between DC/Voltage or PWM mode, depending on the fan.
https://faqs.noctua.at/en/support/solutions/articles/101000447280-how-do-i-optimise-my-fan-settings-
>>
>>106785106
Not sure about that specific case but the ones I've seen with pre installed RGB fans also tends to have its own proprietary RGB controller that can be hardware controlled with a button
>>
>>106785106
I also dont know much about Retarded Gamer Bling but I do know theres 1 program that can handle most if not all components with gay lights called OpenRGB
once you get all the gay lights going you should install that and put them all in red so your nephew doesn't troon out
>>
>>106785197
ok so in general, any case that includes a fan control hub is gonna have a way for the motherboard to control it. i also just learned that there's an aRGB header on motherboards now, holy crap. so i want to:
1. pick a motherboard with known/good argb support
2. pick fans that have both power and rgb connectors
do i need a fan hub? i'm gonna aim for 4 or 5 fans. it'd be nice if they could all be lighting-controlled. maybe a stupid led string too
>>
>>106785260
Thermalright sells a cheap ARGB + Fan Hub that simplifies everything.
Check some product reviews regarding its reliability.
https://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Controller-Support-Magnetic-Supported/dp/B09SZBJ5JZ

You shouldn't have to worry too much about picking motherboards with ARGB support; these lights are too popular with kids & teens to not include it.
Even entry-level gaming boards like the Gigabyte Gaming have 3 ARGB headers.
>>
>>106785260
>pick fans that have both power and rgb connectors
You don't need to spend more than Arctic's P12 A-RGB fans, they sell some in discounted packs.
https://pcpartpicker.com/search/?q=arctic+p12+rgb

Thermalright sells cheaper ARGB fans as well.
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/case-fan/#m=113&l=400000&s=120,140&sort=price&A=2,3,5

Lian Li sells some fancier ones.

How's the Pure Base 501 Airflow? Seems like be quiet! stuff is hardly talked about here and even when it is it's mainly the CPU coolers.
>>
>>106785518
My current rig (which I am about to replace) is in a silent base 601(?). Very sturdy and high quality case with good cable management. I think the pure base is their entry level line but it's probably still a decent choice.

How do you notice if one pump fails when you have two in a series?
>>
>>106785557
I'm just unsure whether its thermals are alright. Even though TPU has done a review of the DX version I don't think their temp charts are noise normalized so it's not a fair comparison especially when the pure wings 3 fans are anemic compared to say the Fractal's momentum ones on the Meshify 3. The DX also has 3 fans vs the airflow's 2 but in a weird 1x intake 2x exhaust config which makes them even more different. Good to know that build quality is high though, thanks.

>>106785589
>seems to be optimized for Intel CPUs.
Funnily enough makes me remember that the Arctic Freezer 36 also has this problem even though Intel has been increasingly irrelevant the past few years.
>if all your components fit the case
I'm only thinking of a humble 9800X3D + 9070XT build so I shouldn't have problems fitting them in there.

It's an AIO and they're pretty much always cooler than air coolers even if 240 is a small one. I guess they added it as a reference for air vs liquid.

This monitor’s selling like hotcakes here in Western Europe. I’m so glad I managed to grab one myself this time. Super happy with it so far, though I’m still not sure how to properly calibrate HDR on Windows 11 IoT LTSC since it doesn’t have the Microsoft Store for the calibration app.
>>
>>106785702
>I'm just unsure whether its thermals are alright.
I only have the standard two intake fans and one exhaust fan on mine and it's fine with a Ryzen 3700x and RX 6700XT
I do run the case fans at mid speed during gaming though, and it is audible but the temps are very reasonable
If you use all the fan slots on the pure base (3 intake, 1 exhaust) and set up your fan curves right it should be good for normal/gaming use if If you're going to run an RTX 5090 and Ryzen 9950X3D I'd look at a more serious case though

How stupid would it be to build a 5080 poverty rig right now? I wanted to go with 5070ti but I had an epiphany that cheaping out on everything BUT the gpu would allow me to go up a tier. This is for 1440p gaming, I like to keep my Pc for a looong time before upgrading so longevity is important factor.

Would 7600x bottleneck 5080 at 1440p? Dont tell me to wait for supers, prices are good right now.
>>
>>106785971
If you want longevity you buy a 9800x3d and nothing else, poorcuck. And at least a 1000w psu for intermittent powerspikes and upgrade path to the 5090
>>
>>106785971
get a non X 7600, get a cheaper case and heatsink. doesn't make sense to splurge on fancy brand stuff if you're trying to save money
>>
>>106785971
Minmaxing is seldom a bad idea but in this case the 5080 is not enough of an upgrade over the 5070Ti to justify that level of cheapness.
>>
>>106785971
The fuck is that PSU? Why do you want to set your money on fire? Just get a SF, CM, Corsair so something if you want cheap. Also, I'd go B650M HDV/M.2 over these lil shits.

>>
>>106786167
>Is 5080 bottlenecked by the 7600?
It shouldn't be too bad provided you're sensible with settings. Presumably you're buying a 5080 to play on high/max not medium.
You're probably still going to run into occasional stutters or pacing issues on the latest AAAsloppa but that's more an issue with the games than the hardware.
>>
>>106786186
7800x3d and 5070ti (or 9070xt) combo would probably be a better ballanced combo, right? Of course nothing fixes ue5 nonsense.
>>
>>106786167
You cant cheap out on everything else if you want longevity you retarded nigger
>>
>>106786221
the 5080 is barely faster than the 5070ti
>>
>>106785971
I'd rather buy a cheaper card and have an all around nicer PC if I was spending almost $2k
The 5080 costs almost double what a 9070xt costs and is only 20% faster
>>
i7-8700K and RTX 5070 Ti or 5080? I mostly play War Thunder, Minecraft etc in 4K. My current gpu 3060 12GB used to get 120 FPS with DLSS on Balanced, but after the recent update it barely hits 80, it's unplayable. The monitor can do 240Hz, but I keep it at 120Hz because of the HDMI 2.1 limitation on the 3060. I also want to run local AI models and 16GB VRAM feels kinda weak
>>
>>106786221
It's closer to what I would build (assuming price isn't a big deal either way) but both options have their merits. Mainly that the first build would give you a better upgrade path - 7600 to Zen6 X3D - whereas the 7800X3D is probably good enough to outlast AM5. Ultimately that kind of comparison comes down to the games you play and your upgrade cadence.
>>
anything I should know before pulling the plug on the 14600k? Seems like such an easy choice over the 7800x3d given the price difference.
>>
>>106786167
>Corsair costs double
You know 12VHPWR sets fire to your GPU right? You want to risk it by going no name brand for PSU? You shouldn't cheap out with PSU, especially not with 12VHPWR. Mobo, anything is fine for a 7600x. Asrock is only problem with x3d I thought? Anyways, I have a b650m hdv/m.2 with 7900x and it couldn't be more stable. Low end gigashite mobos are gigashite.
>>
>>106786289

In 4K War Thunder, I'm heavily GPU-bound, the i7-8700K still has plenty of headroom for a better GPU. CPU usage is around 50% in 4K War Thunder, so I’d consider an RTX 5070, but it only has 12 GB of VRAM like my 3060, and I want more. unfortunately 32GB 5090 is way too expensive. My PSU is a Seasonic Focus GX 850W, so I think it can handle a 5070 Ti or 5080 or maybe I should wait for the 5070 Super with 18 GB? But I kind of need a new GPU now because 80 FPS isn't enough in War Thunder. The recent update broke performance for me
>>
>>106786980
Turn your res down to 1080p just to test whether it's your cpu or gpu. It's probably the cpu, it's 10 years old.
>>
>>106786980
What >>106786990 said - if your FPS doesn't at least double in 1080p vs 4K the GPU is not the issue.

Turning the res down to 1080p instantly results in over 150 FPS on DLSS Native, compared to 80 FPS at 4K with DLSS Balanced and 40-50 FPS at 4K DLSS Native. specs: i7-8700K, MSI Z370 Tomahawk, Asus TUF RTX 3060 12GB OC, Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (2x32GB) 3200MHz C16, Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB as the C drive, 980 Pro 2TB for games, PSU Seasonic Focus GX 850W

Any experiences here with the AOC Q27G4ZD? Rtings hasn't reviewed a sample yet but other places seem to praise this seemingly extreme-budget level QD-OLED. Lowest price by far that I can see on my local stores.

Current monitor is a 165hz VA, and seems to be one of the few with very good VRR flicker reduction. The above OLED on the other hand seems typical of its type. Don't actually care about going all the way to 240 without using framegen, in fact I'd actually be fine just 2x while reaching base 90 frames for any AAA. Apparently going lower on the frames will help with VRR flicker (is it just that having consistent frames is the real winning move?).

And which brands should I be looking out for that will be making a budget T-OLED? This thing is going for the equivalent of $475 USD here.

Use case is general home use; after work hours and all day on weekends. I prefer the taskbar to be visible all the time but its a very dark color and I frequently use apps that are (borderless) fullscreen, so the taskbar pixels should be moving frequently enough unless its a really lazy day. Only concern then would be text legibility.

Right, I will keep an eye out for that model appearing in local stores. It takes a while for the latest tech to appear here.

The PSU recommendations include the power requirements of other components and having some headroom after to be within the ideal spot on the PSU efficiency curve. Some flagship cards may also spike higher though the 5070 Ti is fairly stable staying at its rated power. You may still be alright with that 650W, but if its newly bought maybe consider returning it for a 750 or higher.

with these oleds look for the panel itself that is used rather than the brand itself. Typically with these new tandem oled models they will straight up advertise that feature in their marketing. The pic is an Asus model that uses the exact same 280hz tandem oled panel.

These would fit your general home use like visible taskbars as they're just less prone to burn in than older gen qd oleds

Avoid AOC if you don't enjoy shitty oled care pixel refresh behavior, I would never buy one regardless of the price, even if it was free it would be fundamentally flawed, I would rather use an LCD.
All manufacturers with this behavior are on my perma ban list until they fix their product.

especially pointless when you know for a fact this behavior does not need to exist at all and has been modified or does not even exist in the same manner on other alternatives.

there is no headphones thread available so i'll ask here. have any of you found a good compromise for the following headphones:
>wireless with wifi dongle, not bluetooth
>preferably studio style setup, but at the very least shouldn't rape my ears
it seems like a difficult combo because the only things that use a wifi dongle are headsets, and it's impossible to find a headset with actually good audio quality because gamers eat up anything and audiophiles don't bother enough to review them.

i'm currently testing a K371 and Cloud 3 Wireless side by side. i'm not an audiophile but the K371 pretty handily shits on the Cloud 3, as it should at the price point. but the Cloud 3 is wireless so i can actually be productive with it. i have nothing against paying what these 2 cost combined to get a headset that does both, but i don't really trust picking out $300 price point headsets at random because again, it's a gaming headset and gamers don't actually know how good the stuff they buy is, they just buy and leave a good review regardless

i know they still have the 42" oled tvs to choose from but monitors typically have better features tailored for pc users like sleep, wake, displayport, kvm, gsync etc and the newer 40" 4k monitors are usually aimed at productivity so low refresh

Hardware Unboxed benchmarks don't reflect the stock performance of video cards.
Steve downclocked the 5070 Ti all the way down to 2450MHz vs. lowering the 9070 XT's boost clock @ 2970 MHz because of "muh spec sheets".
That's part of the reason why no one else can replicate HWUB's GPU benchmarks.
Not to mention Steve admitted to overselling the driver impact of that benchmark content.

9060 XT vs 5060Ti

>>
>>106789681
Old GPUs will still work on new drivers even if it's not officially supported provided you get past the installer's whitelist (doable by installing driver first on new GPU), but you might have issues with setting it up as a physx device (haven't tried not sure) or it may have rendering issues down the line and Nvidia wont do anything to fix it
I'm also looking into GPU options for physx for a BL2 replay but newer GPU options from the rtx2000 to rtx4000 series aren't good since there isn't a consumer single slot GPU that doesn't need an external power adapter. There's the rtx2000 Ada but it costs as much as a 5080 so...

>if they switch to gddr7 they would destroy nvidia
AMD will have an unfavorable GDDR7 supply contract compared to NVIDIA's due to the colossal difference in order volume.
And AMD will pass down the added cost to poorfags like (you).

RDNA2/3/4 GPUs are designed with an on-die L3 cache, which reduces these chips' reliance on raw GDDR memory bandwidth.
They would have to redesign the GPU architecture to take full advantage of GDDR7 memory.
This isn't some simple shit of DIYing GDDR7 chips into RDNA4 cards.
>>
>>106789681
I think the 980 is actually getting one more driver update. After that worst case scenario you keep 2 sets of drivers going or just swap gpus when it's time for a replay.
Could do a 2060, that'll solve that issue if you're worried

You need game developers to step in and unfuck their product; that's where most of the performance fixes & gains will be coming from.
>>
>>106789879
NVidia never screwed over older cards, they just don't try to optimize them beyond where they performed when they where in their prime so to speak,
They still get bug fixes and game by game optimizations but the base driver stays the same performance for general directx/opengl rendering

It's up for debate if this is intentional or there just isn't more to optimize out the GPUs
>>
>>106789879
You're baiting but no, finewine is basically a meme. Major bugs being fixed isn't "finewine." The cards for like over a decade now have all been basically abandoned early on windows, and even on linux it's usually still worse than the equivalent nvidia card on windows, especially as you get into like Turing vs RDNA 1/2
Maxwell and pascal are just now losing driver support.
>>
Is there any hardware (or associated drivers) that genuinely got better with time in terms of performance? The only thing I can think of is game console emulators, which start out as only playable on the absolute highest-end CPU and GPU combos, and when they mature 3-5+ years later they're playable on modern entry level gaming hardware or even smartphones.
Shouldn't it be possible to achieve similar optimizations for GPU as they age? Starting out with a 100% baseline on benchmarks and rising to, say, 120% on that same benchmark a few years down the line.
>>
>>106789826

You answered your own question. Emulators improve because the team behind them is committed to supporting them in the long run.
There's nothing the GPU designers can do if the game devs don't put in as much effort into getting the most out of their hardware.

this discussion has been going on since late 2022 btw, nobody wants that soapy grainy looking coating on their mini led screen and yet nobody has made anything better. even LG's usually good matte coating looked noticeably worse on their one mini led monitor that flopped. it's possible that what we are seeing is just the mini led array

not viable for monitors because of cost size heat and power
you will buy oled every ~3 years and you will like it
you don't wear the same underwear every day (i hope) and you can't use the same monitor for more than 3 years either

Is there any guide on how to update the BIOS for dummies?

b-but OLED apparently can't have true DC dimming

I just wanted to say that and post that picture

Dough makes glossy ips when they aren't scamming their customers (which is literally all the time)

>b-but OLED apparently can't have true DC dimming
oleds has a flicker associated with the refresh rate that is imperceptible
don't think it's like pwm shit
if you get eye strain it might just be the coating+fringing
but idk

>>106791044
I don't even consider that a real company
>>
>>106791062
good points
guess I can always try one at some point

people that get eyestrain on these new oleds are just genetically inferior

5 years isn't really a long time either though. You should expect your monitor to last for 10 years at least
>>
>>106791101
>You should expect your monitor to last for 10 years at least
You seem out of touch.
People are upgrading from CPU gen to CPU gen yet you think those same people are putting up with a monitor for 10 years?
>>
>>106791068
if you can't handle qdoled glossy, you might need to try more ppi qdoled (27" 4k), last resort try matte qdoled, after that if you can't cope, 4k woled glossy should probably be fine, if not matte woled last resort
all 4k if you already knew you have eye strain because 1440p will be low ppi

>>106791086
philips I tried had such a strange glossy coating, it was like it was reflecting RGB and giving like a chromatic aberration/3d effect at all times, even on full R/G/B test patterns, it was constantly irritating and I could not focus, it was crazy, I don't think msi or asus has the same coating even
it was extremely harsh on the eyes, maybe just me at that time, maybe not
Samsung G8 matte is way less harsh in that regard
it's a combination

would not people who get triggered by bad looking artifacts have better vision? if your eyes are cooked you would not even care, like staring into the sun pain free
anyway

>>106791101
just buy an edge lit computer monitor for cheap then
lcd tvs don't last forever either they get cooked
warranty and time lasting are different things though
do your lcd monitors give you a 5 year panel warranty? don't think so

>I tried had such a strange glossy coating, it was like it was reflecting RGB and giving like a chromatic aberration/3d effect at all times
that's what the matte coating is like on the m27p6 kekadoodledoo

4k has been the carrot on a stick since 2008, there is no reason to expect anyone to upgrade their monitors that often (yet)
>>
>>106791151
not sure
it reminds me of a colored oil spill, you see different colors reflecting

Just turn your brightness down
the ABL on OLEDs mean that anything but a 100% window of white gets insanely bright even compared to LCDs
Turning down the default like 75-80 brightness on my pg32udcp to 45 made my strain go away and it's just as bright as I used to run my LCDs
>>
>>106791169
People are upgrading because of refresh rate, not resolution.
>>
>>106791188
what's that 1440p 500hz monitor going to do when new games can't even hit 60 fps on a 5090 at 1080p?!
>>
>>106791180
sdr should not have any abl though
plus many people have reported changing brightness did 0 for the strain
also you are comparing a matte woled which people already get less problems with
plus I run 100% brightness now compared to as before and there is very much less strain, diff panel diff coating
but it's a possibility

>TIM: ... PTM7950 (phase change)

is this stuff worth messing with for a first-time builder, or will I want to stick with the thermal paste for now?

>OS
Ashamed to ask, but how do you actually install an OS these days? If I wanted to run Windows 10, would I need to install it before October 14th, or is that just when Microsoft officially stop providing security updates?
>>
>>106791202
Because not every game is AAA slop from a few months ago?
Slightly older games will run at hundreds of FPS, Indie games will run at hundreds of FPS
You can run Minecraft at 1000 fps+

Stick with MX-6

>If I wanted to run Windows 10, would I need to install it before October 14th
I would download the installation media to a USB drive.

All OLEDs have ABL, you can literally see it cranking up the brightness and witnessing a window of white get brighter and dimmer depending on the size.
Uniform brightness gets rid of that but it's not on by default.

Even without the ABL, the average OLED gets to be 300nits with a 100% white window, that is still as bright as lots of LCDs and is brighter than what most LCDs used to ship with as a default.

Now what?
>>106791217
Don't bother with 7950. The stuff on amazon and ebay is fake and worse than just regular mx4 or mx6 or something.
You can install w10 whenever you want regardless of support status. You install it basically the same as you always have

There are few normal/consumer boards with SAS ports, but they are usually the flagships, like Asus x870e Extreme
>>
>>106791516
No such luck, rocking the Strix X670E-I, which is pretty up there but I guess it's not a full size motherboard so they chopped all the additional stuff off
>>
>>106791015
Your mobos manufacturer's site might have a viseo for it. I had one for msi.
>>
Are MSI still the best for PSU?
>>
>>106791998
This has to be bait. Even NZXT sells a better PSU model.
>>
>>106791015
It differs from motherboard to motherboard
I strongly suggest not doing it in your OS and doing it either from a turned off PC (through the special bios flashback button) or if your motherboard doesn't have that, through the bios

MSI has some good models, most brands have good models & bad models.
