Welcome to the 4Chan /g/ Usenet General Thread!

>What is /usenet/?

Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on
(http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). TNot owned by corpos, not under
govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed
by all.

Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like rss, irc, http,
usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards .
Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.

>WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open
protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, mpossible to take down.

Today it is split between, binaries and text. The
binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and abandoned, until now.

>WHY POST ON USENET
Its open protocol, you can use any client you want or
build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP, or through eternal-september.org. Then you just need to install a client.

>THIS IS OLDER THAN MY DAD. WHY TF WOULD I DO THIS?

Because its is comfy.
Because it’s decentralized. Because instead of feeding some corpo ai
bullshit like discord or whatever, you can have a conversation with like
minded anons in an uncensored, decentralized, and fun hackerman way.

>DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING?
No, you can use the aforementioned eternal-september.org with any client of your choice, or use the service of newsgrouper.org to access freely online (register to post)

>OK I’M IN - WHERE DO I POST!
Join us at alt.cyberpunk.tech

WHAT CLIENT SHOULD I USE?
>Pan (gnome newsreader - Multiplat)
>Seamonkey
>Gnus for GNU Emacs
>Mozilla Thunderbird

>want to take a peek?

Online Based service @ newsgrouper.org is free and allows to post when registered. Also it can be used in any browser, even on android!

I'm honestly not sure how many are populated, there's binaries groups alive to share new releases I think.

You can check yourself the various groups and need be, start something like we did but manga related.
>>
>>106942116
Why do you want to turn 4chan into a discord? Jesus christ, go fuck yourself with your generals and namefaggots.

>le discord boogeyman
>>
>>106942413
I'm totally clueless about what you are up to. Discord? This is exactly the opposite, it's a way to encourage non volatile high quality discussion.

But I'm glad you are filtered out, or actually that you filtered out yourself.

I know a great usenet group:

Ignore the haters, though you are being a namefag and should knock that off.
I've been enjoying the budding alt.cyberpunk.tech community. I've been reading most every post, replying to the ones where I feel I can meaningfully contribute, and I've thoroughly enjoyed learning from you anons. It is a nice filter, as it takes more than 2 brain cells to install and configure a client and engage in more longer form discussion. Its great.
>>
it's great seeing all these overstimulated retards unable to take 10 minutes out of their days to read about how to set up a free usenet account and a client, getting all upset at nothing.
i've been lurking on the group on the OP ever since it was started getting posted here and i've yet to see a single moronic post on it. the kind of post that is constantly flooding all of the popular boards here--typed on a smartphone, without thought, or really any purpose whatsoever other than picking a pointless fight and triggering people.
it really shows that all you ever had to do to get quality discussion on the internet back was to make it so it takes just a *little* effort to join a particular group and it just naturally filters all the le funny trolls out and you're left with actually valuable discussion.
the threads also don't disappear overnight, meaning that you can take a break for a few days/weeks/months and catch up whenever you want to, it's a great change of pace compared to the fleetingness of image boards.
the group posted in the thread (alt.cyberpunk.tech) is active and is high quality, and (You) should get on your computer, install Pan, make an eternal-september.org account, open up the group and start posting on it RIGHT NOW. it takes 10 minutes, costs nothing, and it's really worth it.
>>
>>106945774
I'm old, we all choose a nickname back then, but still were anons.

I do not use it to get any prize it privilege and if someone is silly enough to pick on an anonymous nickname... It's ok I do not care.

That said, I'm glad people are enjoying the place, lurking, reading and contributing.

Hope things will keep growing.

>>106950638
Even back then most people lurked. No issue with that
>>
>>106937478
Why usenet specifically and not I2P, TOR or another altnet?

Seamonkey is also good (which is what I use).

If a Usenet server goes down you can access the same content from any other Usenet server.

But your attention do? Why do you even care?
>>
So the process is sign up with eternal-september, then use that in thunderbird and then I can browse and post to alt.cyberpunk.tech? Or is es also a webclient?
>>
>>106964508
If you use E-S, yes, you'll need to use a client like Thunderbird, since they don't offer a web interface. There's a different service called newsgrouper.org that lets you access it from the web.
>>
I'm trying to get keys to work in Pan but it keeps saying it failed, I've double-checked the details for both the generated key and in posting profiles. Can someone point me to a guide or explain it in simple terms? I tried searching online but I'm coming up blank because nobody uses usenet.

keep going, don't give up. It is a great idea.

Usenet just werks
>>
how is usenet still around with all the piracy? how have they not been thoroughly raided constantly?
torrent sites are being taken down left and right, and they don't even host any content.
meanwhile usenet mirrors the same hundred PB of warez across the world and nobody says a damn thing.
>>
>>106965780
Don't most operators and nodes (like basically all seedboxes too) sit in the Netherlands where they wipe their ass with DMCA related stuff?
>>
>>106965790
they also probably don't get monitored anywhere near as closely as torrenting sites
>>
>>106965790
no, usenet has tons of hosts in the US and all across the world, I used to work in the same datacenter usenetserver is in, and they've been around for like 30 years
