>>106956118Gentlemen, I came to /g/ for another purpose to look up some new PC build meta, but I saw /mkg/ and I had to stop by and say hi. It's been a long time. I still have a collection of converted oldies. I still have a couple of old terminal alp boards that need modern love. However, I come with the glad news I actually did reach my grail. It has carried me through all the gauntlet of a masters degree, then teaching college classes, building autistic spreadsheets of grades and miniature collections, writing essays, scientific papers and stories. I have not had a different primary board for over 3 years. It is but a humble Epson QX-10, modded to have NKRO by adding diodes and giving it QMK firmware. I can adjust the feet to my perfect angle. I have the extended numpad for all my needs. I have macros for all the major F key replacements when I need them in a single press. In the beginning, I never thought I would have gone linear. I never thought doubleshot ABS would fulfill me. Yet, here I am. A couple of layer functions and she is my baby. Fujitsu leaf springs are some of my favorites and the layout, heavy key clunk, and slim adjustable profile just fit everything I want.I guess what I really want to say is I hope you all also find your forever board as well. This thing has already served me longer than it was meant to serve the world in 1984. Good luck on your quest, friends.
>>106956273I'm happy for you anon it sounds like it was a lot of work
>>106956273>Epson QX-10You sound like sperg, but I'm a toprautist and even have a realforce board and mouse in my cubicle so I respect the tism. What is your masters in? I'm mathchad so 1800 layout is the way to go.
>>106955072Membrane you say?

Having a good source at my right hand for numbers and media controls at the same time has been a godsend in my life, lately.
>>106956572bro I'm not keeping 8000mAh of C4 under my fingers fuck that shit
>>106956273Ok my drunk ass read it.After such a build-up about the "humble" board you settled for I was a little surprised to find it was some vintage desktority-approved Chyrosran-approved board.>In the beginning, I never thought I would have gone linear. I never thought doubleshot ABS would fulfill me.Linears with double-shot ABS... who could imagine...>Good luck on your questAppreciated, thank you. I hope your vintage grail keeps on chugging another decade. Salut.
>>106956943Yeah I'm not doing that either, but I have access to non-chinkshit murata Li-Po batteries so I don't have some explosion prone JaeoWOObinngbong eBay battery with a a faulty BMS. But regardless of that fact, even with a high quality battery like AA Samsung rechargeable with an effective BMS for it, 8000mAh is just cartoonish. Why not 800kmAh? I was under the impression most keyboards and mice used something like 1800mAh with lazy controllers that went off voltage to indicate fully charged so 4.2V reports as 100% as opposed to real charge determination.
>>106956960Funny thing. I got it before Chrysoran approved it. One of my others, the Fortran Z-spring, he actually reviewed specifically because of me. Good board, BTW. I just like this one better.
>>106956976>Funny thing. I got it before Chrysoran approved it.Even funnier thing. I don't watch Chyrosran, I was guessing.
>>106956980Dude has nice things to say about most old bamillion keypress switches, so not a hard guess. He usually pumps up the 3rd Gen Fujitsu's, but I like the seconds better. It's honestly whether they have the NKRO or not but a little clever circuit splicing and it makes no difference.
>>106956966>800kmAhk and m just cancel each-other so you're at 800Ah. which is the equivalent of roughly 12 car batteries. like the 12V ones. but if you're looking for same Wh as 800kmAh at 4.2V then ~3 car batteries should do it.

Someone should make a HOF/TOTL ranking list of S and A tier keyboards for full size/1800/TKL/75%/60% boards. Anything smaller is too niche to bother with.

I'm looking to get a QMK board, any tips on the firmware and driver situation? I'm using openbsd, and from the looks of it firmware is going to work, but the driver might be difficult to get working.
>>106961930Idk lol
Can someone just spoonfeed me a good keyboard platform?I’ve been using keychron, which I like, but I need another keyboard. Preferably with wireless/wired potential and hotswappable switches
>>106961930??? Your question doesn't make sense. All pcb will give you the firmware. ??? Are you making your own pcb? >>106962564Your question is also just vague. Any keyboard on divinikey will do that? There are 100s of brands that make acceptable hotswap, wireless/ wired boards

>>106963222Sound is the most subjective part of mechanical keyboards, and even YT videos sound different across sources. That Rainy75 is commonly regarded as a nice-sounding keyboard and it just werks, so it's a very safe bet for spoonanon.
>>106962854will the firmware compile and be flashable on openbsd is what i'm asking. i know keychron give sources for their firmware, but they don't compile on bsd
>>106963241>That Rainy75 is commonly regarded as a nice-sounding keyboardIt can be as commonly-regarded as you like, I'll still think they're wrong. Show me a video of a Rainy75 sounding good. I have watched a LOT of Rainy75 sound test videos, and never once found it pleasant to listen to.And the flex cutouts are so extreme that the board basically doesn't work without being stuffed with foam. Look at this shit lol:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1HELCwFRIY&t=250sI think it would be far easier to make a Keychron V1 Max sound good.
>>106963576rainy75 is overrated as fuck and is for art hoe faggotry performative keyboard bullshit
>>106963152Nice. You will have a sound profile people used to pay 500 dollars for. Also if you do buy new switches make sure they are 5 pin, they are needed to make the rain drop sound

hmmm I think I want a huge metallic battleship keyboard
>>106963576It's actually pretty shocking how much of that creamy yummy thock that makes my heart tock is driven by foam. I am not going to let material elitism warp my perception tho.
>>106964038I'll never understand liking that sound.
>>106963576Lmao what the fuck is that design?
>>106963576That sound is just like shaking a spray paint can. It's what keyboard enthusiasts today call marbly. >>106964038Marbly 100% has its place, so don't let anyone get in between what you like. Since sound tests are so subjective and easy to fake, I can't even honestly say what I like to hear. A dedicated desktop mic can sound 100% different (no hyperbole) compared to an iPhone's mic. It's simply impossible to be a sound elitist like this. If you like what you hear, own it.
>>106964038Also foam filters sound and every single keyboard kit uses foam in some manner or the other so don't start thinking foam is for plebs or some bullshit. Just look at how every other manufacturer uses PE switch sheets after the Jelly Epoch-inspired PE foam mod became popular.
How do I make my keyboard sound something like a Model M clone without using buckling springs?
Someone on Reddit called the Transition Lite a foamed up piece of shit, fuuuuck I was so close to buying it.
>>106964424>That sound is just like shaking a spray paint can. It's what keyboard enthusiasts today call marbly.Yeah, that's bad, sorry. It sounds bad.
>>106964950You don't.
wanted to try an hhkb and get into trackers (renoise i was thinking). will a 60% keyboard be a burden on speed / enjoyment of trackers?
>>106964950Might as well try to get Alps-like tactiles by modding the current garbage switches that are passed off as tactile.
>>106965050Sound preference is subjective cope of the highest order. I am still not going to let material elitism warp my perception.
>it sounds bad>even though the whole world digs it
Hi guys, I've always had store-bought cherry mx blues, and I'm looking for something tactile, but silent. I don't really play vidya on my pc. I was thinking about browns, but the recommendations say it feels like "reds with sand in them."I'm not a huge enthusiast, really, I just need something good for typing and excel shit (so a numpad is a must). Thanks in advance.
>>106965714>silent tactilesGet whatever hotswap board is good and slap in lichicx silent tactiles.
>>106965727Not Gazzew Boba u4t?
>>106965766U4Ts are good switches but they're not silent.
>>106965121Sound profile is a barometer of quality. Making your keyboard have a specific sound *even if you think it sounds like shit* isn't something that can be done with low-quality parts.
AAAAH, first time fiddling with a hotswap board, the whole key keeps coming out when I use the keycap puller and i have to like pry the switch from the keycap afterwards, spooked me
>>106965971there's 0 chance you can fuck up the board itself by doing this right yoinking it out like this? worst you can do is damage the switch?
>>106965971It's normal if the switches are HMX. Normal for other switches as well unless they're all flying off, in which case you need to improve your technique. Hold the board down with your other hand when you pull your keycap off with the puller. Or use flat tweezers/whatever to gently hold the switch from the exposed sides while you pull the keycap off. It'll work!
Just copped a transparent black TRANSition Lite for $70 lolit's flexshit but they released a 7U non-flex board for it so I'll get my hands on that in future. Next up is a Neo65 CU by Christmas. Fucking CONSOOOOOOM bitches!

Why are clear switches so hard to find I just want clear switches
>>106968160no for real tho, why no other materials? there's wood nonsense, metal but looks and fits like shit, and ceramics which got me curious but still a long way from having different profiles
I want to update the general with some solid picks for different layouts. How's this for TKL? >Transition Lite, Classic TKL, Neo80, QK80, Evo80, Mode Loopthese all seem to be in stock unlike the god boards like F1-8X V2
>>106968227Plastic is king. Ceramics are very niche. Metal caps exist. You can get copper or aluminum ones, but it'll cost you. Wood caps will probably chip too easily and be a bitch to work with for manufacturers. Basically no one gives a fuck, plastic is king and you're not gonna get microplastics in your lungs by typing on plastic keycaps.

Going to be a fag and borrow this thread a bit. I ordered viper v3 hyperspeed to replace my old g305. Did I fuck up? Didn't find any chink mouse brands that were even close to having a 280 hour battery life since every mouse has to weigh 50 grams these days for some reason while having abysmal battery life.
>>106971966I've heard about 0 battery issues from those extremely light Chinese mice that are 30g let alone 50, but Viper v3 is highly praised since ever if u like the shape don't see how you'd fuck up

>>106971966Nah razer is great. The Viper V3 Pro I got is fantastic in particular. Great and I mean GREAT clicky response. Their keyboards are trash obv
>>106968259I hate the idea of having a "recommended products" list in the OP. It stakes the entire thread's reputation on Chinese products that can fail, and it will become outdated almost instantly, requiring constant maintenance. And worst of all it will discourage requests for recommendations, one of the few sources of posts we have.
>>106972862all tech products are Chinese
>>106967476>The system doesn’t work with just any random keyboard, it must be trained to a specific keyboard with references for what character each keystroke corresponds to.This is scary. That means with little more than a mic in your room and a keylogger they might be able to figure out what you're privately typing with up to 95% accuracy...
These ABS keycaps really hold their own next to GMKs
>>106972862Cope. Those are the most common boards available today and anyone can find at least one solid board from those that I listed. Most boards are foamslop anyway, at least with a list you can avoid Meletrix or completely random sounding brands like YOOZU or SZAPP
>>106972868I know this nuance is completely lost on some of you idiots but being manufactured in China is not what makes something Chinese. This push mower is made in China. It is made to an exact specification for an American seller, based on an old American mower design; the seller rigorously inspects it for QC to ensure it meets the spec. If you've ever used one, you notice its distinctly American character, made for the sensibilities of a certain kind of American merchant and American consumer. It is heavy, robust, utilitarian-looking, and requires some maintenance by the owner. It is, in almost every sense, an American product. But it is Made in China. The degree to which a product is Chinese is the degree to which it embodies a Chinese sensibility because of the Chinese involvement in decision-making about the product. This is on a spectrum:Chinese-designed product for the Chinese market >>> Chinese-designed product for a western market >>> American-designed product with broad leeway for the Chinese manufacturer to implement the design >>> Tightly-specified American design that nonetheless leaves QC/etc to the manufacturer >>> Full tight control of design, materials, QC, etc by a non-Chinese party using a Chinese manufacturer >>> Products designed and manufactured outside of China
