Need a new keyboard, my old one broke today(bricked).
I liked the Varmillo Full size with Blue switches. So now I'm looking into buying a Ducky One 3 RGB hot swap. It's about 200€ and that is a fair price for me.
Whats the verdict on Ducky? Good or overpriced? Are MX Blue still the best and loudest clicks?

This was on discount so I risked trying the new layout. I'm gonna pray daily to get an OGR2 extra next year. If not then I'll stop coping and get a Mode.
Also look at this awesome tray design by KKB, GMK should take notes. Just pull up the rubber mounts halfway and it loosens the bottom tray up. Pull it all the way and the top tray is accessible. Elegant!

cheapest most silent switch?

how is the slope from R2 to R3? I have a hard time using heavily sculped profiles because I always end up bumping my fingers when moving from R2 to R3, for reference I'm currently using an ISA profile
>>
"most silent switch" is a terrible idea. this is what a silent board should sound like (coincidentally very similar to my Photon with Lichix Raw Silents):

Canglan V3s are by far the most muted linears I've tried, and they feel good to type on. Try one of those, it's the opposite of a typical HMX clacker.
>>
>>106992921
That's hideous, looks like every corposlop office in the US. Why would you do that to yourself.
>>
>>106996008
Don't have any problems with it personally. The curved keywells change how the profile feels so it won't be the same as a flat board, obviously.

can i used the soldered cherry mx switches of my old keyboard on a new keyboard with hot-pluggable switches?

>>
>>106997486
Yes, just be careful to take most of the solder off and don't leave globs of it on the pins.
>>
>>106995993
Going for super cheap silents is usually a bad idea, they generally feel terrible. Unikeyboards is selling WEKT Lucys, they should be good since they're basically the new Lichicx, and they used to make the best silents before they went under.

Anybody know any sources of keycaps with profile equivalent roughly in height to Keychron LSA profile? I think LSA are around 4mm height.
>>
After using Lichix for a while I am coming to the conclusion that ALL switches should be at least a tiny bit silenced. POM on Nylon is too harsh. We should be finding plastics 5% softer than POM for the bottom of these stems. I should always be bottoming out on something with a little bit of give for a softer sound and feel.

Every time I switch back to one of my Cherry boards it feels like striking pinballs against marble. It should feel soft, like striking wood-on-wood.
>>
>>106994143
>arrows are offset by 0.25u down
>board designer still chooses to make the nav cluster 2x2 when 2x3 could fit and still have exploded spacing
I will never understand why they do shit like this
>>
>>106998017
Some people really hate the softer bottom out. It's all just preference anyway.
>>
>>106998110
I think, if I had to guess, it's because R2 support for nav keys is generally shit in most keycap sets. You can't put delete there, nor end, nor insert, etc. Probably all you can do is page down.
>>
>>106997486
>also what do you think of picrel? Keychron Q1 QMK
keychron shit is pretty boring. it’s kind of the gateway brand to actual custom boards

>>
>>106998129
I should correct myself, I was using the row labeling scheme of certain PBT keycap sets, which is reversed from GMK labels. I really meant R3, not R2.

>>106998166
You're right. My guess was incorrect. I just remember being frustrated when I was putting keycaps on my 65%, but that's because I didn't want page up/dn, I wanted home/end, while keeping fn next to up arrow. Couldn't do it.
>>
>>106998135

>>106998161
>15-20 years
The lifespan of an MX switch is about a decade in my experience. I don't think a Keychron would last that long, even with changing the switches. But I'm basing this on nothing, I don't really know, just a gut feeling. Among other things, the foam gaskets might become brittle and disintegrate before those 20 years are up. The PCB, I don't know.
>>
>>106998368
Just realized I was unintentionally ambiguous. When I said "that long", I mean 15-20 years, not "a decade".

>>
>>106998424
quality across the board, design, sound, mounting options, the board actually being custom. you don’t have to dump $300+ on a sonnet to outcompete keychron though, literally any custom board will do that. sonnets are just popular enough to be a long term in stock option which is part of the reason they’re like $300+. you could get a neo75 cu instead. keychron sucks
>>
>>106998549
$40 keyboard > $300 keyboard
>>
>>106993249
Get it anodized if you have an aluminum board. Idk what you'd do if it's acrylic/PC. As for keycaps, can't go wrong with GMK Verdant Retro, KKB Jindo beige, Black Snail or its L9 modifiers, GMK classic beige, KKB, etc. Lots of cool beige sets out there.
>>
>>106999027
What does that even mean lol. Once you type on a nice keyboard you see what the price hype is about.
>>
>>106998441

uh these sound nice as well. I was initially looking at the Outemu Silent Peach V3 which are on that Unbox Therapy silent keyboard. and they seemed pretty cheap
>>
>>106998135
they can be ok or even nice, depending on model of-course, and if you find some discount deal.
for example I found a K2 HE deal at 100 euro, 75% compact, PBT doubleshot keycaps, hall effect switches, metal frame with plastic bottom, and QMK compatibility. plus the Keychron software which is up there these days for hall effect tweaking. RGB, wireless. for 100 euro that's hard to beat.
>>
>>107001182
If you don't mind paying through the nose ordering from Korea, Geon still has Lichix raw silents in small and big bump varieties. The big bump is not huge, more medium-large, small bump I haven't tried but I understand it's a little more like an MX Brown. VERY similar to the red velvets in that video, I can take a video of typing on my Photon if you need proof.

https://geon.works/products/raw-silent-switch?variant=43516378579107

Keep in mind part of that sound is from a nice hollow plastic case, it won't sound the same on aluminum boards.

This cherry with blues.
Chink boards, sff 65-60%, reds, Keychron with HE switches... At work I use a 65% HE Aula, forgot the name, it's nice enough and works well enough, software is shit because it's tied to some website instead of some open source or easy to access software.
At home I use this cherry, that said it's kinda old, and the switches need a lot of love or replacement.
I was just gonna lube them up and check the leaf springs for contact or grime or whatever, but I remembered you guys and thought to ask...

Are Filco still a good option for traditional cherry switches? I don't want to get into custom boards yet, I'd rather get something out of the box ok.

>>107001427
What's wrong with your G80, other than being a bit old? I honestly don't think you're gonna beat the G80 as far as boards to put blues in
>>
>>107001436
The case is huge, needlessly so, whenever I take it apart I'm always left in awe of how much is used for nothing, just empty space.
Being cheap plastic, it cracks and bends, plus looks cheap (nothing wrong with that, but I'd like smomething that feels nicer.
Loudness is not a problem, I don't mind how loud it its.
I guess it comes down to trying something new.
Typing this I also come to realize that I could just make a case for the existing keyboard and keep the pcb and switches intact...
>>
>>107001436
>>107001413
My bad I didn't read the whole thing. What I'd do is:

https://oblotzky.industries/products/gmk-cyl-norde
Spend 90% of the budget on good double-shot keycaps where the legends won't fade with use (you can always re-use them on your next keyboard if this one doesn't last)

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008107811733.html
Replacement switches.

Either solder in all new switches across the whole board, or just as-needed on switches that are failing.

I wouldn't try to fix broken switches, because there's absolutely no way that saving the 40 cents per switch is worth the headache.
>>
>>107001487
If it's that bad, maybe it's worth it to get a new keyboard, but there aren't good options for ISO layout.

Keychrons are OK for clickies if you take all the foam out, but buying the clickies separately it becomes a bit expensive. That said I do have a V6 max with Gateron Melodic clickies, and I like it. But with what I spent on switches and keycaps it was not a $100 keyboard anymore.

Varmilo has some ISO-DE boards but they're a bit expensive and none of them are offered with clickies.

Filco still makes boards in a way that sounds proper with clickies (big empty plastic is the way to go), but everything they offer is ANSI-only.
>>
>>106993438
Cheaper sets have much better packaging, GMK needs to step it way the fuck up.
>>
>>107001549
Ansi is fine, I can use the USA-INT keyboard map and that gives me ß and so on.
