Does /g/ solder?
I'd first need a room with good ventilation and adequate PPE to wear so I don't increase my risk of lung cancer.
My wife won't let me.
haven't soldered anything in years, but I've got the equipment for it
yeah I do>>107117673are you the cuck from >>107111084
>>107117757I'm not a cuck. I just don't know how to convince her to let me do the things I want.
>>107117629I sodder, yes.In a closed room with poor ventilation because it's irregular.
>>107117629Yeah.>>107117837So...You're cuck?
yeah, it's kind of a necessary skill to have if you're into collecting computers, consoles, and vintage hifi equipment.
>>107117666how bad is it if i soldered for an hr with no ventilation
>>107117950your lungs and eyeballs will turn into mustard gas
got this the other day since the soldering workstation isn't so portable and some things can't be brought to the bench.
Yes but I fucked it up:( My n64 was turning on with a white flash but no audio or video, only a red light, indicating it was on. So my dumbass decided "why not reflow these thirsty chip legs on one of the chips as my FIRST foray into soldering?" and now it won't even turn on because I either burnt it or bridged two connections together. I have some solder wick, flux paste, tip tinner, and a sponge but am still scared to fuck it up even more. What do I do :(
>>107117629Every now and then, yeah.Just make sure to ventilate appropriately with a desk fan and keep your window open while doing so
>>107118012You definitely shorted the fuck out of at least 7 of those pins. I think the traces themselves are kind of okay, though. This might be salvageable.Start by removing all that solder you put in there and go easy on the heat. Test the traces for shorts and continuity, if they're fine, you're golden.
I worked for a place where I had to solder and repair things 9 hours a day for 2 years, so I'm kind of a pro
>>107118012>am still scared to fuck it up even moreAt this point what've you got to lose?>I have some solder wick, flux paste, tip tinner, and a spongeGreat, practice reflowing and resoldering components on another board from some scrapped POS device, like a dead router or DVD player from a thrift store. Then use those skills to fix your fuck up on your N64. Can't guarantee it'll work again, but it's worth a try.
>>107118065lung and eyeball status?
>>107118122I have to use eyedrops, but that's probably because of long screen times, my lungs seem fine but I haven't soldered for a year. One of my coworkers would take breaks to smoke cigars, he's probably dead now.
>>107117629which man doesn't?
>>107118012Jesus fuck. You don't need to add solder when you're reflowing.Just flux up and apply heat.
>>107117629Its fucking killing meThe videos make connecting two wires together look so simple This God damn black wire won't stay connected
>>107118361absolutely pathetic, anon. Get your life together.
>>107118361You're doing something fundamentally wrong or not using flux or both
>>107117629I can solder, but only do so very rarely.
>>107118361Flux both sides. apply heat. Hold it in position until it turns back solid.
>>107117629Yes... badly. I learned how in my military tech school and then never used the skill because everything is potted with epoxy and we just pop and swap boards until it works.
>>107118518T-ty anon that kinda helped i wasn't flux'ing both sides
>>107117629nope, I'd rather pay the extra dollar and have the connectors presoldered
>>107117629I soldered this LED sign and I drive it with a raspberry pi.
I re-solder new switches on my mice when they start to double click. More effort goes into taking the mouse apart with its hundred tiny screws than the actual soldering.
Where do you get the soldering mats that people seem to use as desk mats now
>>107118605The red wire looks iffy. Do that one again.
Poorly.
>>107117666What a bitch
>>107118605#1 rule of soldering is both pieces have to be hot enough to melt the solder on their own. The iron is just for heating the pieces. The blob of molten solder on the tip serves as a thermal paste to transfer heat to both pieces at the same time, and when they're both hot enough you'll see the solder flow into the joint on its own due to capillary action.
>>107117950you are already dead
yeah
>>107119284Grim
>americans pronounce it as "sodder"
>>107119507>buying lead solder is banned in yuropooria :(
>>107117629he's literally me>>107117666same but i don't do that lmao
>>107118012just add flux, use clean iron tip, keep board upside down with pins facing down and just touch the tip on the pins and drag it down, solder will flow on the tip. drag few times don't press hard and it will unfuck itself.
>>107119913selling is banned, not buying
