>Song submission rules/guidelines
Upload the file somewhere, preferably in a lossless format, and post the link here. If you want to update your track, make a new post.
Include the song title in the post, and make it clear that your song is a submission for the album.
Optionally you may include cover art for your track, but please confirm that the image in your post is the cover art or it won't be included.
You may not use your real artist name.
Songs that contain anything against YouTube's policies won't be uploaded on YT, but will still be added to the album.
By default, tracks will be normalised to -14 LUFS (integrated loudness) in the release. You may specify a lower loudness for your track.
Use of AI is banned. This includes AI generated stems, samples, and effects. "AI" includes all neural network-based models and not hard-coded automation/procedural generation.

>>107172872
I believe you're doing alot of things right, but still doing a few things wrong, fix them and your production skills will certainly get better.
I currently just make simpler melodies just so I can focus as much time on over producing them by running the same melody through different chain effects that produce results that are musically viable for the composition. I haven't even started gathering fx chain that i can re-use which would streamline the workflow even better.
tl;dr spend more time making sounds(not forcefully music) and optimizing your workflow

i make all my music using a cracked version of fl 11 and renoise, this track specifically i made with renoise and with 100% samples, no effects besides the native tracker ones ( no delays or reverbs either, all manually tracked in )

The only things holding me back are guitar software and WeMod (cheating/trainers for single player games) but the latter is not important.
Once I'm sure my audio stack on Fedora is stable, I will go full Linux.
People suggest Arch to me, but I'm afraid I'm too dumb for that.

What's the best, cheapest microphone?

I'm doing audible genius's building blocks course and it wants me to use a microphone to sing or hum melodies or whatever. So I guess one that's good for vocals?
Looking for like $20-50 range, but cheaper is better as long as it's not garbage. Also I've got an audio interface with phantom power and all that shit, so no USB stuff.

Also, I do have a gooseneck mic from my Akai Miniak for use with it's vocoder... But the quality seems shit, but maybe it's user error?

>reverb is a well solved and easy to do thing
there are different algorithms for different reverbs and some people fetishize them. for example, the lexicon algorithms are these coveted things because they've never been released or leaked and some are possibly "lost" - this is the kind of shit gearheads bust a nut over.
>>
>>107192658
i run fedora, you should consider installing the fedora music production package group, make sure you have pipewire, and then get qpwgraph, which is a gui for pipewire where you can see and adjust connections. you could do all of this in the terminal, but i find it's easier this way because it's easy to forget how you set things up

Bumping this question
>>
>>107195292
Thank you. From what I see, though, I don't think I'm missing anything of interest but qpwgraph, plugins and DAWs I can install individually and at my choice, what I really needed sorted out was the inner workings of the audio stack; not much system-side (it was already working from the get go) but rather on Wine's part. That gave me multiple headaches

Of course I was joking/trolling.
Anyway, WeMod is now Wand. If you install it under the same general wine folder as the rest of your applications, it does work.
As far as linux goes, yeah, arch is so bleeding edge, that you probably shouldn't use that. As much as I love using arch, Fedora is probably the best standard for workstation stuff in my opinion. But you really need pipewire as it gives you the highest quality audio. It also gives you full control over your audio stack. The thing is, if you need compatibility layers with other audio such as alsa, pulseaudio, jack, you can just download the plugins for pipewire. (pipewire-alsa, pipewire-pulse, and pipewire-jack)
I can't remember what the standard for the patchbay is but maybe Helvum?
>>
>>107196389
I did install all the required pipewire plugins and layers, as it was my specific desire to absolutely avoid JACK (I don't like it).
I'm using Helvum for a patch bay, pwvucontrol for volume control (but I suspect it's pointless, doesn't seem to add anything of use to me on top of the native gnome volume control) and EasyEffects. Regrettably, none of them offer the ability to change buffer size and sample rate and I find this pretty absurd. 4 audio pieces of software and none able to manipulate some of the basics of audio production parameters.
Even on Windows you could go the audio panel in Settings and set buffer size and sample rate.

Sure. Any VSTs and what not you just simply install the windows versions of them in the appropriate folders within the wine prefix.
Once you get things set up Its genuinely more simple then fucking around with Linux DAWs and using VST compatibility layers, or at least its been the case for me.
I would recommend using wine 10.0+ at least though, as I've found some of the built in FLStudio plugins are broken if you use something older like 8.0 series. But since in current standing, every function/plugin I've tried has all worked exactly as it should. The only thing I don't have set up is ASIO4WINE, but I'm still able to get 20ms latency presently without doing any tweaking with Pulse, good enough for me.
Pic related for the current version of Wine I've been using.

Listen to a lot of music of many different genres. Both stuff you like and you don't like. Listen critically. Find out the ingredients of the stuff you like e.g. you notice that the guitar has a lot of reverb but the drums are dry, everything is in minor scale, there's a lot of staccato and not many sustained notes, etc. You note down what makes something sound like the thing it is. You learn to notice what it is especifically that you like and don't like.
Learn music theory, but not academically. Learn an instrument, play covers of many good songs and then go by feel. The real use of theory is knowing how to play, jamming some chords and notes and using your ear to find what sounds good. Then theory can retroactively help you understand 'why' it sounds good, and how you can replicate what you did again. People who learn a lot of theory but don't learn an instrument are either university professors or very misguided people.
Learn what your tools do. This is something that is better done on the process of attempting to produce. "Oh man, on X song I like a lot, they made a sound that goes left and right on my headphones, how do I do that?" LFO on the pan control. "Boy do I wish I could hear this synth lead at the same time as this pad, but their frequencies overlap a lot" Sidechain compress the pad using the lead as input. I think a lot of people who want to produce tend to get pretty decent at this stuff but they don't realize it because the haven't made good music yet so they can't see how good their technical chops are.
At this point you see that it's all a combination of taste, having trained your ear and knowing how to use your tools. If you have good, developed taste, you can make good music, because you'll make tasteful musical decisions. Then in the stuff you make, your trained ear notices the sound is too loud/high/resonant/sibilant/muddy and so on. And then because you know your tools, you know exactly what setting you use to fix the issue.

Should I install a DAW on my PC or my Mac? I have one of each. I'm normally a Windows user, but my last job used Macs and they let me keep the laptop after they laid me off. The Mac is a lot newer and more powerful than my laptop, but I'm much more comfortable using Windows...
The DAW I'm looking at using is Ableton
>>
>>107215461
Mac BTFOs Windows for audio stuff. Also you can get Logic Pro it's pretty cheap and you get infinity updates forever apparently.
>>
>>107215540
Ok thanks, maybe I'll give i ta try. i might have to re-organize my desk though...
>>
>>107215461
They're both the same (assuming you've got an asio compatible audio interface to use with windows, you don't need that sort of thing for macs.) Legit, just use whatever you want.
Macs don't have any real advantage other then not needing said audio interfaces for low latency, but also do have the disadvantages of less access to plugins as many are only built for windows (or x86 for that matter anymore). This may or may not matter given what you use.
>>
>>107215965
Thanks, I guess my main concern is the performance. My Mac is newer, and it's probably significantly more powerful I think. I don't know how much CPU/memory/graphics-power Ableton requires. I guess I could always try installing it on both if the license allows.

iOS vs Android? 100% true. Mac vs Windows? You're a fucking drone.

>>107217779
This too. There are legitimate reasons to choose Ableton but for the most part the Mac+Ableton combo is peak brainless drone behavior. These people want to create something but they haven't even begun and they're already not thinking by themselves.

Android is not inherently worse nowadays, but it used to have audio latency issues that caused devs to prefer iOS for production-related apps, which is why if you search both stores you'll find more stuff on iOS than Android. Not the case with Mac are Windows, where there is hardly any software of note that is exclusive to Mac (and even the inverse is true, there are a few things that are only on Windows, and it tends to be niche stuff), and you can get cheaper RAM and processing power on Windows (not that anyone is unaware of this at this point anyway). If anything, with all the complaints I have read on audio forums about software compatibility with M1, I'd say that sticking to Windows is generally a better use experience than Mac.

What's wrong with Ableton + Max? Other than cost.

>you notice that the guitar has a lot of reverb but the drums are dry, everything is in minor scale
I can't notice if "everything is in minor scale", is it over for me?

If you want the buffer size and sample rate to be universal pretty sure you have to set it in some jack related config file even if you're not using jack because that's what pipewire expects or something retarded like that.

kek the meme caught on, I'm glad it did because Ableton should go bankrupt they are the main reason music became slop today. Music isn't something you should just "jump in" to, if you refuse to learn the basics and skip to seek beatz making with fisher price software just off yourself now.

It's not 2008 anymore retard
Music isn't exclusively made AT LE RECORDING STUDIO WITH LOGIC-PRO!! LE PROFESSIONAL AUDIO ENGINEER'S SOFTWARE OF CHOICE! YER NOT USING FRUITY LOOPS ARE YOU??!1??? VSTS??? YOU NEED LE ANALOGY HARDWARE!!!

AND NO! THE SOFTWARE EMULATIONS RUNNING BIT FOR BIT THE EXACT ROMS OFF THE VIRUS HARDWARE SYNTHS OR JP-8000 DON'T COUNT! BECAUSE THEY JUST DON'T, K?

I think today instead of installing a DAW and getting started I will re-arrange my desk so that it's easier to work once I do install a DAW and get started

i'd also recommend learning guitar so that you can use it if you ever want to include it in a song

I tried that when I was in college. I don't have the fine-motor control to do it, and they've only gotten worse since then.

you don't really need good motor control to slap down some chunky rhythm chords
but you're right, it'd distract you from actually prodding music for too long

guys I need to upgrade, I work on a shit laptop, previously I had a computer but it can't handle multiple instances of Diva vst. I was looking at lenovo legions, macbooks and what not but can0t decide. I even made a configuration for PC but after getting a laptop I hate the idea of being tied to one spot for working on a computer. What do you guys use?
