If it's a PC of modern parts then you'll have the best time with 11 Enterprise. Though if you prefer something completely static besides security updates as of November this year then go with 10 Enterprise 22H2 with the ESU updates enabled.

I have if 19045.6466 version of Win10 Enterprise. Some anon said this is not good in the previous thread, but I was able to activate ESU and get cumulative update 5068781 for November.

Dad called me last night asking about his Windows 7 machine that he's still running. My bro-in-law and his friends are giving him a hard time because he's not running a Win10/11 machine, mostly security concerns.
I told him as long as he's checking sites that he knows well, and emails (which is all I think he uses the machine for...) he'll be fine.
I'll have a chance to see the machine in person over Christmas. Is there anything I should look for on it? Idk what browser he's using or what level of update it's at.

Will I have any issues gaming with Win11 IoT LTSC? Incompatible software etc.?
>>
>>107208645
Not really, I don't even have problems with Win 10 LTSC 2021, gaming works just fine, a few sys admin tools gave me trouble some time back, because they wanted a paid license for running on Enterprise editions, but that problem has nothing to do with LTSC.

Generally speaking problems will be very limited, there is not a big difference between GAC and LTSC for as long as the GAC version of the same build is supported, so unless software specifically checks for the update channel, it will work. Win 11 LTSC is build 24H2 and the GAC version will be supported till October 2027.

No problems with GPU drivers, other software for pc hardware updates/managment, any of the GPU/CPU features…? Programs all work fine (Steam et al)…?

Drivers just work like on SAC/GAC, but I don't own any Nvidia GPU anymore, so no idea about them, but my 5700xt and 7800xt with 13th gen Intel CPUs work fine, even on Windows 10. And if possible I use SCCM packages to install drivers, or some open source tool like g-helper for Asus stuff. And the best driver install I ever experienced was Framework, great driver bundle for Windows.
>>
>>107204214

i used to do this for a living. It's not that difficult to learn how to sysprep/capture and maintain images, as stated you can slipstream drivers, hotfixes, etc., you can capture the image with pre-installed software pretty much as you wish. you can also deploy an image then apply hotfixes to it. and you don't have to learn the whole microsoft deployment toolkit to do this.

i used to script the whole thing - prepping, capturing, and partitioning/formatting/deploying image/post deployment configuration. was doing these when powershell was still complete shit so used (of all things) mostly AutoIT, many thousands of lines of it were written.

if i had to do it again would probably do with powershell which has improved a lot over the years but you can use whatever including simple batch files or doing it manually.

diskpart is both your friend and foe
>>
>>107206468
Always DDU
>>
>>107209194
Kinda reminds of how I also thought about using scripting to carve out a recovery partition on a PC that didn't have one, but I didn't know where to begin with that. One of my main concerns is that there is no guarantee that the disk it should be doing its thing on would be Disk 0.

I actually brought it up before. I asked Copilot about I and it gave me a Powershell script (that I never tested). I'm not fluent in Powershell, so I had no way of judging how viable or safe the output would actually be.

>>

>these days ironically you may as well use linux if all you want is a gaming box

>>107209564
kek it's worse than you think - "SELECT * FROM CIM_DiskDrive" in a WMI query at least gives you a correlation between "\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE<number>" and an index number you can use for stuff like diskpart but - the actual enumeration of the drive has to be observed in WinPE for your scripting because full Windows and WinPE are not the same environment - so you have to make the WMI query in the WinPE environment you will be using to build your script ...

so: you first have to make a PE environment that you can make WMI queries in to develop your scripting, you can use an old tool like WMI Explorer from https://www.ks-soft.net/ in PE ..

I recall finding a fun bug with old hardware where AHCI enumeration of drives will sometimes put the drives in different orders because the enumeration is timing dependent, if a drive takes a little extra time to report in to the hardware it might be disk 1 or 2 or 3 sometimes where it's normally disk 0 - that was some fuckery right there.

It's all jolly good fun, I swear. At least, I remember swearing a lot...

Notwithstanding all that I never saw value in having a custom recovery on my boot disk - if the disk dies, so does the recovery. I backup my data so it's offline from the PC, but I don't bother with full system backups any longer, nor do I maintain a USB with updated WIM image - I can just re-install my crap in a day if I need it.

I worked in the industry for so long I have no desire to do this crap any longer, I just want an OS to shitpost from.

I installed Hyper V to play downloaded games in a VM, to be safe. It works, but...
The mouse doesn't work in FPS games, the cursor stops when it would have reached "the edge of the screen". So you can only turn so far with the mouse.

Have any of you tried to do this, and have you found a fix?
I'm assuming the HyperV client just send the mouse cursor positions from the parent OS, so whatever game is running inside cannot capture the mouse properly.

Gonna freshly install W10 LTSC in my language first, maybe I will upgrade to IOT later.
I am gonna get the MS store first and check what programs I need.
Should I create a system volume for the big SSD, e.g. 192GB, so I can simply wipe it
and eventually (forced to) clean install W11 LTSC.

As an average gaymer there is no way around it to prepare to go to W11. But as long as I can stay on W10 I will do so.

I'm on W11 home with the version of Notepad that has minor formatting and will save/reopen unsaved documents

Is there a way to still recover those files?

I was able to find some (all?) of them in the user appdata folder, so now I'm wondering how to just get Windows to recgonize they're there and to open them all as it normally would

Interestingly, I do see there is a notepad process running right now, and if I go to delete some of the files, it tells me that I can't because it's open in notepad, but there's no actual notepad window on my taskbar, so maybe notepad is running with them all having been reopened, it's just fucked and is "invisible"?

These are for 2019 but there's similar pages for 2021 and 2024. If you just want to block everything including update checks then just block it in your firewall (or Windows Firewall). For click2run editions that's the application itself (i.e. winword.exe), sdxhelper, click2run and one more I can't remember.

Trying to install Win11 on an IdeaPad Slim 3 (15ARP10) for my cousin. LTSC installed but had no Wi-Fi, so I wiped it to install Pro instead.

Now the Win11 installer won’t finish without Wi-Fi drivers, and it refuses to see any files on my USB — folders show up, files don’t. Tried multiple drives, same result. No Ethernet port either.

What’s the trick to getting this thing to read drivers during setup?

The error code means that certain system files are broken/corrupted and Windows Update can't install/apply it to the system because said files are broken/corrupted.
IMO first do "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" and then "sfc /scannow" and see if it says it found and fixed system files. Then restart and try installing the update again.

>should i just buy a W11 Pro license since it's in my budget to do so, or should i just use MAS for the new system?

>what is the real advantage, if any, to using LTSC vs full retail license in the above scenario (assuming i can buy either a retail LTSC license vs a retail Pro license)?
>>
>>107231386
When it comes to any activation questions, the answer is always just use MAS.
And the advantages to using LTSC is that it comes with no third or first party UWP bloat besides system level UWPs like the settings panel and that its EoL is quite long, LTSC being 2028 (better to just use ESU'd 10 Enterprise 22H2 instead) or IoT LTSC 2021 (frozen on 21H2 but has updates until late 2032.)
>>

if you're worried about what the scripts do, apparently installing then activating server-side then re-installing works, so nothing the script can do to your install will remain
they're already making big bux off your telemetry and market share contribution
>>

>>
>>107231498
That's a very good reason to just install the latest Enterprise, you'll get up to 3y of updates on a given release and its a single click to upgrade to the next version if you ever want or need it. Within the 3y of support there is no difference between LTSC and regular Enterprise in terms of updates. The preinstalled apps on Enterprise can be uninstalled from settings or with DISM, depending on the specific app (most are just from settings).
>>
>>107232253
This. ESU'd normal 10 and LTSC 10 are basically getting the same security-focused updates for the next three years.
>>
>>107232265
>10
If they're getting a new PC there's no reason bother considering 10 which probably doesn't support all the hardware.

yep would not. Pro key from a real store isn't out of reach for me budget-wise but ...

looked more closely at the Enterprise vs IoT LTSC vs the retail key, I think Enterprise is out for me. And the forced updates and enshittification of the retail really pisses me off, would not want to always be chasing down apps I don't want and uninstalling them.

>wanted to go legit
>know better than to step in shit barefoot
>have a habit of keeping PCs for a long time with minimal hardware updates

>>
>>107234149
if you want to go "legit" you shouldnt be using anything but Home or Pro at your desktop PC, stuff like Education is "intended" for students who are given keys by their uni/college, or for professors and school institution PCs, while Enterprise is for large business general desktops who join a business domain and get their machine activated like that, and embedded/IoT/server are obviously for specialized devices and servers. Also do more research on what's possible and actual testing before writing off anything or being sure in things you read on the internet. It's factually possible to do the following:
>Disable automatic updates on Windows 11 25H2 Pro
>Use a local account on Windows 11 25H2 Pro
>Set telemetry level to 0 using regedit in Windows 11 25H2 Pro
>Disable other privacy invasive (debatable how intelligent it is to do so in terms of security) issues like Error Reporting, Routine Remediation, Automatic Sample Submission, SmartScreen, Web Search, Store, OneDrive)
Most people you talk to on the internet are low IQ cattle who cannot do anything on their own, try doing things yourself and learning.
