How many months of unemployment before I should start panicking and/or settle for shitjobs?

depends on how much money in the bank you have or how doting your parents are. I. I'd panic at ~6 months until homelessness.

Out of curiosity what's the ratio of swe/programmer types to actual proper infra (sysadmin/sysengineer/netadmin/netengineer) types here? I've always thought of /g/ as being more a programming dominated board don't end up seeing much discussion on the infra side and generally visit fairly infrequently. I haven't noticed as many issues with my side of the market compared to desktop and programmer types and have been kinda curious if there's just a heavy skew here.
>>
>>107437966
You missed the DevOps meme we are doing both swe and ops
>>
>>107437974
Most of the devops positions I've come across largely seem to either by sysadmin positions where you're expected to know python or swe positions where you're expected to have some infra knowledge. The pay looks nice but I haven't really touched them personally as a more classical sys engineer type that's moving into more pacs admin type work these days.

300 out of 600 react sections done wooooo! I think we've covered all the basics now we're just covering all the add ons like redux, react router, react query/tanstack query, next.js, RSC and animations. Oh yeah after that there was a socket io chapter I skipped because it used react and I'm sure nothing changes when using socket io in react but I better check it out real quick. Then we can get back to the project for realsies.

It's a matter of perspective. A "loser" is someone with no skills whatsoever, someone not putting any effort into furthering himself. A slob.

If you base your own sense of self-worth on a single paycheck or the approval of others in general, i don't know what to tell you really

You are not your job. Only you yourself are responsile for creating your own meaning in life, a job can't/won't do that for you

>Half-jokingly tell him I haven't touched a switch in five years, but I enjoyed it so I'll take this job if they're desperate to hire
>He calls me and it turns out they genuinely are desperate to hire (they set the pay range too low) so he submits me for the job
>Figure I'll get rejected for lack of networking experience
>Recruiter calls me a few days later and I have correctly guessed that they aren't going to interview me
>But it's not because of my lack of networking experience, actually he says they're impressed by my resume (I think this is standard recruiter speak, but it still feels good to hear)
>It's because I DON'T HAVE A POLYGRAPH ON RECORD (I didn't even know this job required one desu)

I've been meaning to kill myself since my sophomore year of high school.

>>107437966
I do basically anything IT but programming.
>>
>>107440794
The government really needs to get rid of polygraph requirements since they select for psychopaths but I guess that's the point, isn't it?
>>
>>107440794
>because I DON'T HAVE A POLYGRAPH ON RECORD (I didn't even know this job required one desu)
What's that
>>
>>107440810
Government gets the same work oriented people that work in finance, investing, and banking. You ever work for 24 hours then nap for another 4 and do it again for a week? That is why psychopaths work in the government aside from benefits and pay. They are the only ones that can handle that shit.
>>
>>107440794
>>107440810
Some agencies do polys for TS/SCI, some don't. The ones that do barely been recognize clearances from the ones that don't. They might grant them a visitor pass. That's why it's customary to list your clearance as "TS/SCI with full scope" or something like that.
>>107440815
When you get polygraphed for a clearance, your results go on your record. They expire after time (5 years I think, but might depend on the agency), then you have to do it again. Usually only the "counterintelligence" one though.
>>
>>107440815
What used to be known as the "Lie Detector" until everyone realized that it was full of shit.
>>
>>107440851
Its a filter that works well enough. The tool being used isn't what gets you its the line of questioning. Do you really want people that can't pass or won't take it for the job?

It doesn't work at all. It's literally just a test for how nervous you get when someone screams at you. Guess who's good at passing a test like that? Psychopaths. It's so full of shit that no court of law accepts them as evidence anymore.
>>
>>107440871
Oh and not to mention since it's so dependent on context, if the tester wants to fail you, it's trivially easy to find something to trip you up on. They'll ask some really esoteric shit, or like start asking you algebra questions, and the minute your heart rate goes up, you failed.
A lot of guys I know who work in lower government positions say they refuse to take the polygraph because it's a career ender.
It's meant to select for psychopaths, and the only kind of person who could honestly believe otherwise is a retarded boomer who doesn't know any better because he grew up in a White society.
It's as much bullshit as criminal psychology.

>>107441038
mine didn't. when i had to get one i asked why considering i had one active and the recruiter told me straight up "because you don't work for us yet we don't have access to your file, dummy, you gotta do a new one that says you work for us specifically, and if it was from the military we don't have access to that system at all and don't bother sending us anything from it because we aren't allowed to read it"

granted, it only took like a month to get it my "new" clearance because, ofc, i already had one. but i still had to reapply either way and even then had to use a different web portal to do it than before because it wasn't for gubberment directly. and my clearance for the company and my clearance for the government even have different expiry dates and conditions.

for example, if i stop working for the company i lose it, and may "lose it"(have to re-file and be "provisional" until it is renewed) if my job description changes too much, but my gubberment one stays active until expiry and has no real special conditions that make me lose it for something that isn't a crime, and transfers directly if i go become a federale or start working at a listening post or whatever. they also have different caveats, like my gubberment one implicitly has ITAR but no one cares and I never got a formal briefing on it because the government does not directly export/import things. I did have to get a comsec one, because I touched comsec stuff. meanwhile, at my new job I asked about comsec and they just went "lol no, why" but had to do a bunch of ITAR-specific shit because shockingly a company exports stuff sometimes
>>
Shut the fuck up furnigger.
>>
>>107440999
>>107441127
This sounds like what I've heard often happens when going between spook agencies and any other clearance holder (most commonly DoD) because, as you said, they use different systems of records and slightly different approval criteria and shit.
Otherwise it sounds like they fucked up, though not tremendously.
>>
>>107437966
>I haven't noticed as many issues with my side of the market compared to desktop and programmer types and have been kinda curious if there's just a heavy skew here.
It's still bad, but you're right that it's not nearly as bad as the dev side of IT. Most of the sysadmins complaints just get drowned out by thirty-forty posts whining about leetcode.

It doesn't help that the sysadmin field has widened a lot. I need to know basic routing and switching concepts but from a day to day perspective aside from just understanding basic vlans and some rare light dns work I don't end up needing my old ccna type knowledge very often. I have to write occasional deployment scripts or very light automation but otherwise I don't script very often and most of what I do is just from random documentation on google. I've never really had to do anything resembling reverse engineering ever. Most of my job is just maintaining and supporting shitloads of application servers/some light automation/spinning up new servers for vendors and implementing stuff for them/physically maintaining some racks/working with some storage stuff/babysitting end users occasionally/doing certs/restarting random interfaces when they kill themselves. I feel like I could teach my job to a zoomer in a few months without that many issues though it is a larger stressful workload and the younger guys coming in struggle with these things a lot. I think in my tenure so far I've never really even had to touch such a massive variety of things like gpos/most of the AD stack/never really worked with auth stuff beyond occasionally ldapping new applications/never really had to work with much network level stuff aside from calling the network admins fags and making them do stuff for me.

There's such a massive variety of "admin" tasks that even in my smaller team of about half a dozen people running around 5k active users across maybe 4k end devices (mix of mostly thin clients and a few hundred regular pcs) almost nobody really overlaps responsibility. One of our guys runs all of the vmware environment (something like 30 esxi hosts) and thin clients and basically nothing else and it's been that way for coming on 7 years. He's just never had a reason or time to do much else.

I always tell people that if they want a job in tech night shift for msp/noc are almost hiring and they'll take just about anyone who breaths and is willing to sit at a desk with a gun to their head on the shittiest hours imaginable. You do ideally need to be in an area without actual datacenters though. It's the foolproof way to slingshot into an eventual sysadmin career.

I had this shit happen to me before. The only way to contact them was through a support form that *suspiciously* didn't work if I used my main email address (the one my account is registered under), but it worked when I used my other email address.
I explained everything in detail in the email, including why I was using a different email address than the one linked to my account, and yet Ranjesh didn't care and just closed the ticket without letting me explain further. No way to talk to someone on the phone either.
In the end, I went through the Persona humiliation ritual and sent them a GDPR request immediately after I got access back, but I'm under zero illusion that they actually deleted the data instead of immediately sending it to Palantir and the Mossad. When (not if) Persona get hacked and the picture of my passport + the scan of my face is in there, I won't be one bit surprised.

Total HR death btw, literally the only reason I'm on that shithole website is so they don't think I'm an antisocial sperg.

Yeah, they do it if they suspect you're a bot (which is obviously BS but that's what they say). I think my account got flagged because I was signed in on two browsers at once (there was a bug with sorting the skills on your profile that was only on Firefox but it worked on Chromium; it has since been fixed).
Interestingly, I've never seen or noticed any bots on LinkedIn, as opposed to Reddit, Twitter, YouTube etc which are absolutely inundated with them. Plenty of real people clearly using GPT to "write" their faux-motivational fluff posts though.

Unfortunately my shitty country is debating a ban on social media for minors at the moment (copying Australia's comically poorly implemented one), so I really hope that they won't make every LI user upload their ID to some sketchy American company to continue using it (although I think they eventually will because normies are retarded and will fall for anything if the government says it's to "protect children", future implications be damned)

I've been unemployed since August 11th, 6 week severance and didn't do much of anything for the first 3 weeks, I started drawing unemployment in October. Next week will be 4 months unemployed, it feels like less since I just relaxed/drank/went camping shortly after being let go and have been half-assing my search until mid-October. I have never had this much trouble landing a job, but then I've never been laid off in 10 years. I've had a couple final round technical interviews, definitely rejected on one and waiting to hear back on another. I have many open leads right now.

I've got six jobs in my career through applying via LinkedIn or job boards and just going in cold and succeeding on the interviews, one from a professional referral, all full-time. Now I will potentially settle for contract work.

Straight up in the last two roles (last 3 years) I sorta have been slacking though I never got pipped or critiqued for performance. One 360 review from an onsite developer at a client for a consulting firm I worked at said something along the lines of I was good when I chose to actually work, and I got praise by some architects for some related work. I didn't go above and beyond working 45h-60h per week while attending every tech meetup in town like I did to get the referral (which was worth it since I got my all time high salary 68% higher than the previous role I held as a consultant). For the referral position, I started out strong and learned a decent amount but I didn't deliver more than the bare minimum for a higher level role. Maybe I slid through the cracks since the company was struggling in general. I will try and be serious about my next role if I don't wash out of tech, it's a really bad time to be a slacker. I turned into the hungover coworker I used to hate. I still have guilt and trouble explaining the last 3 years in a way that doesn't make me seem like a fuckup when compared to my first senior dev role where I was kicking ass all the time.
>>
Can I apply to junior dev jobs with 10 YoE or will my resume get thrown out because I have too much experience? I'm too retarded to be senior level now that the competition is this fierce even though I technically had "senior" in my job title at a couple places I worked.
>>
>>107450398
Are you a new grad? Look at all the rest of us who have been laid off, I can tell you layoffs happen even to skilled and respected engineers, a company will let you go with no warning just because you make too much and they didn't plan out their finances well - so you don't owe them anything in return. I once left a job after a week when I saw the state of their codebase and got an offer with slightly better pay and conditions.
>>
>>107452768
Many senior level roles I've seen only require 3-5 YOE so long as it's focused, I think when we hit 10 YOE we've experienced at least one hype cycle, everything you did in the first 5 years doesn't matter anymore and it's all frontloaded on the last 5 years.

I've seen senior engineers come in who didn't know shit and didn't do shit and were paid more and had a title over me as a junior dev, so idgaf if I weasel my way in somewhere or am a little rusty. This guy I'm pretty sure was sexually harassing some female coworkers and calling in all the time or participating from home while we were in the office on Teams calls drunk. I think he had a severe drinking problem, and posted sob stories about suicide attempts on LinkedIn, and somehow got all kinds of sympathy and another job or two afterward. If he can sleaze his way into a job we can too.

That's interesting, because I came here to say the exact opposite thing. On Linkedin, I have applied to maybe 80% of the jobs for my skillset (Linux Systems Administrator, 2nd Line Support Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer) in my area. I got an interview for one of them, but most of the others never got back to me. But they've been up for months, and they're still up now. I have shown that I can do the job, and it's not just that they didn't want to hire me; they haven't hired anyone. What's going on? Do these jobs not actually exist?

I got rejected from a state government job for not meeting the minimal qualifications despite in reality having twice the minimal qualifications and a bachelors degree which is stated to lower the bar a bit. I’m going to write an appeal, and failing that I will write a formal complaint about the government HR administrator and make a freedom of information act request to figure out what the qualifications of the accepted candidate was

It’s one thing if I wasn’t the best candidate but it is another when I clearly meet the minimal qualifications and the incompetent HR just have no idea that in my resume emphasis on some technologies imply others. If you use React, I don’t think you have to explicitly state whether you use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

I said as much. $15 isn't a high wage, but it's enough for me to keep the lights on. Particularly since I'm not paying for gas for a daily commute. The big draw for me is working on my own schedule and being able to piss and shit whenever I want.\

The biggest issue so far is that the work is kinda brain-dead. Then again, for $15 an hour, I didn't expect real brain bogglers.

>>
>>107468209
No don't get used to it, kill them.

>>
>>107468454
I was going to say quite difficult even if you're already good at networking because there's a lot of niche network trivia thrown in there like Cat cable frequencies and fiber wavelengths and shit. But skimming through my Network+ book, there's not nearly as much of that as I remember there being, maybe I just spent more time studying those chapters than the others.
So I'd say doable if you already do networking, incredibly difficult if you're starting from nothing.

Also this was the only CompTIA exam I found studying for to be mildly entertaining. Networking is cool.
>>
>>107468454
Focus heavily on Subnetting. Actual net+ content is really just CCNA lite instead of bullshit memorization like it used to be. A lot more focused but alot more difficult if you never heard about routing protocols. Memorization is Wifi standards, Protocols and network architecture(IBBS, Ring, Network firewall setups, VPN's, Cloud, ect).

This test is no shit harder than both A+ and Sec+. Its very broad but in depth also. Sec+ is more focused and A+ is easy memorization by comparison.

the remaining 5% of applicants are qualified but they get filtered out by interviewers asking them to find the median of two sorted arrays in O(log(m + n)) time

Any recommendations for hidden strings to sneak into my CV that would let it pass automated roastie filters?

Unironically, Yes. It's my own fault though. I am lazy i havent applied for a real job in months

rember theres session authentication for coupled client/server apps and json token for "decoupled" ones. Or you can use socket io which uses the socket id which I guess is like session auth probably.
>>
oh wait nvmd I need jwt for socket io or I could just make them login every time they need their stuff from the server beyond the first time or something.

AI prompt injection in CVs doesn't work anymore AFAIK.

I'm about to enter a bootcamp for security+ exam
What can I expect from this? It's a 8 hour session x 5 days
Repeatable twice so it's 15 days if i want to. 10 classes each month

8 to 12 is the only batch of this month

To be honest I'm taking any jobs since forever from general affairs to IT teacher at some high school. At night i learn korean and clip stuff from the games I've played (they're all ubisoft lol)

In between things im also writing a non fiction book centered around living as a third world with all its shenanigans.

Gender studies is a more lucrative degree than CS, Title 9 enforcers, police officers, victim advocates, professors are more sought after while indians take all tech jobs. You fell for the humanities are worthless, get a le stem job meme. Now it's either major in humanities/education/nursing or just skip college.

Am i committing a huge mistake for quitting my first and only job of 5 years, just because they want me to go back to the office after 2 years of remote work? I have a wife and small amount of expenses so i cant just neet it out, but i earn dollars and live in a 3rd world country and have a fully payed off house. I enjoy my job I just refuse to go back to the office. I have made the maths and have enough to go for like 1.5 years no job. I am currently a supervisor of 3 departments and workload is low so its a very comfy job. Im sure IF i find something ill go back to being a grunt. Im also thinking of maybe starting an MSP? This decision is really REALLY stressing me out.

i have tried this and the real answer is that small business owners are stupid and generally "penny wise pound foolish"

they'll beat an employee to death for using 0.002c extra worth of soap to mop the floors but gladly still unironically pay for full cable packages even though no one even watches tv, to say nothing of all the abusive subscription packages they pay for for their POS machines and "ERP" systems (while still having employees do final inventory numbers by hand because boomer shit reasons)

Is everyone on vacation? My email activity has dropped down a cliff since thanksgiving. Recruiters that were talking to me have ghosted, I'm not getting any new interviews, and even the amount of rejection emails I'm getting has gone down.
>>
any EU anons ITT? are staffing agencies a scam or the saving grace for engineering graduates? all I see is job postings from them
>>
>>107480314
Europe here. I have been a freelance dev for 10+ years.

Between 2010 and 2020 these agencies were thirsty for devs. I didn't even have to send resumes. I never looked for jobs. Jobs looked for me. It was so crazy, that recruiters even wrote you when you didn't make it to the end in an interview process (an actual human-written email!)

These days are over. Now they gather your data, and you never hear from them ever again. If you manage to actually start a process, and they don't pick you, you will never know. People will just stop writing you.

And if you try to apply for jobs manually, all you will get is a computer-generated generic message:

>due to the volume of applications for this position, we had to take you out

Agencies are going to waste your time. Skip them.
>>
>>107471975
Alright. Carry on.
>>
>>107480394
thanks, that's what I thought. still, mass applying to them can't hurt. just sending the same CV for all matching openings, no cover letter. can't take that much time when you're not optimizing for each individual posting.
>>
>>107480423
cover letters are a gigantic waste of time. Nobody reads them. Specially today.
>>
>>107480314
EU fag reporting in. I'm working for one. Well, hopefully my security clearance is done by end of the year so I can start in January.

I'm a freelancer but due to market being fucked wasn't able to get clients. That's the only reason why I accepted to work for an agency in the first place. Hopefully I can get some clients next year but that's just wishful thinking.

If you area a big brain and study hard enough then its. A+ - 4 weeks, Net+ 6-8 weeks, Sec+ - 4 weeks. Yes you can knock it out sooner but 1 week is a big ask for a test written by indians.
>>
>>107469022
actual realpost and i will even resist the urge to shit-talk comptia: people say Net+ is the hardest because of subnetting. that's it. networking is a dark art in general but Net+ really harps on memorizing obsolete Class A/B/C/D definitions and you have to be able to translate CIDR notation into a weird format that only comptia uses and only for its tests. it doesn't explain subnetting very well, either, since i guess they don't expect you to understand binary at such a low level so they use a lot of weird analogies that don't quite work.

and as is typical for entry level certs, expect to have to gain a deep understanding of 70s-80s shit like Token Ring and boomer names for topologies that don't matter because these days everything in a building is normally just connected to everything via a stack of switches and in a real event at a real job regugitating ITS LE STAR TOPO doesn't elucidate anything anyway.

it's also arguably the least useful since hr roasties aren't obsessed with it and value vendor certs higher (invariably Cisco certs even if they don't use Cisco gear, though that's forgiveable since the entry level Cisco ones are quite good about explaining basic features every vendor uses) and "entry level" networking isn't really a thing. Either you'll be an IT janny and other stuff is more important to know, or you're trying to become some kind of hardcore network engineer in which case you should probably just go to a real school for computer engineering

I have 5 years of sysadmin experience and I can’t get a call back for local dogshit $20 an hour level 1 help desk jobs. Or anything else. Approaching 6 months unemployed. Hello Applicant,

This is a fucking E-Mail... to some dumb FUCK on who applied named "Anon". Now, I'm tired of this fat FUCK popping up in all of my fucking Applicant Tracking Systms when I'm looking for a FUCKING server janny! I don't give a FUCK about the aftermath of ANY of you Powershell fans that feel sorry for this greasy fuck!

You stupid fucking disgusting panty-line sniffing BLAWB, beer-drinking, CISCO-bathing. ball-gargling, pen-thieving, Steve Ballmer face having, Dr. Robotnik looking, Ramen eating, Welfare gorging, T-Rex arm having, Non-Dubai Chocolate eating, cook with a Coleman grill because the power been cut off, linux loader, nogame indie ""dev"", poorfag, pretending to have a fucking thyroid problem, Welfare Whale slash Free Willy, PArt bus, Yokohama Crackhead, meeting flubber, Kirby, salad dodger, chair crusher, round meal, go to Safeway and use every fucking coupon, no driver's license, HAPPY because Enron is back in business motherfucker!

I know there's gonna be a lot of people out there calling me a bully, well guess what? I'm not! I just don't feel sorry for lazy fucking people, especially fat fucks who sit there all day, gorge and eat, and make no money because they've studied absolutely nothing! While a bunch of sorry fucks like yourself play into it!

You don't like what the fuck I'm saying?

Then FUCK YOU!

Another in-person interview Friday, and I'm now lying on my resume saying I have experience in libraries I don't (the libraries are adjacent to stuff I've done/used before, and I'll bullshit that I actually used the library and if I get an interview cram it)
>>
>>107472766
I make sure I'm keeping up a pipeline of say 5-10 contacts every week (helps when recruiters reach out, 50/50 recruiter contacts and responses to cold applications, I've even started pestering people for jobs and will go big on reaching out to old contacts come January), it only converts to 1-2 interviews a week. I'm getting super autistic about tailoring my resume for every role I apply to, I've begun to lie on my resume about stuff I could easily cram for in a couple days. I focus on web development in one frontend framework, two backend frameworks/technologies, and one cloud provider and apply to those roles exclusively, so I have enough background to bullshit a recruiter to put me in front of a hiring manager or have enough plausible experiences to provide keywords to get past a ATS/pass background check/pass employment history/pass reference check. I consider my failed interviews all the prep I need for the next interview.
>>
If your unemployed why you don't just get clearance ? With clearance it is very easy to get job 250K TC starting
