What's the lowest hardware I should reasonably go for a home OPNsense router/firewall? 100M WAN, at least 1G LAN (though I have some 2.5G devices), couple of VLANs and running a few extras like Adguard Home and Wireguard is all I need probably. Low power is a requirement, so no old enterprise firewall that's burning 40W idling.
Used mini PC with a 6+ gen i3/i5 and a 1G NIC + extra 2.5G NIC? That would be sub €100 and consume around 10W. Only downside is there's only really room for 2 NICs which may be limiting. Though for a home network does it really matter? Security cams would be on a physically separate network plugged into a dedicated NIC on a server instead of on a VLAN on the same physical network, so those video feeds won't be taking up bandwidth on the LAN NIC.
Most heavy data streams would be within the same VLAN so a switch can handle that.
Then what would I need a third or fourth NIC for on a firewall?

Alternatively, since I have a VDSL2 connection and need a modem that's approved by my ISP, instead of putting my FritzBox in bridge mode with a custom router/firewall behind it, I could get like a used Draytek Vigor 2862 for €50, which has a built-in VDSL2 modem and 4x 1G LAN + 1x 1G WAN/LAN, and do away with the FritzBox altogether. Though not sure about the software on those Drayteks. Don't think openwrt is available for it.

I am making such slow progress trying to figure out how to set up a file server that I'm feeling like it's pointless to continue. I don't even know if I'm on the right path. Every guide I've come across does not go into enough detail for me to really know if what I'm attempting will even lead to what I want.

I have an old laptop and an external drive. I want to access this external drive easily from anywhere. I would like to use a GUI whenever possible to work with files because I have a lot of stuff that doesn't always have recognizable names. Like if I want a specific picture of my cat from my server at home and I'm at work, I would need thumbnail views to find it without opening pics one-by-one.

I have never done anything like this before. I currently have Alpine Linux with Tailscale set up on the old server laptop. I have added my Android phone and main laptop (Fedora and Windows dual-boot) to Tailscale. I have no idea what to do next. Every Google and YouTube search does not lead to anything solid enough for me to really make any conclusions.

I don't know what else to say here to explain my situation. All I want is a protected file server at home that I can access from anywhere and it would be reasonably secure from everyone else in the world. Why is this so difficult to find a solid guide for that I could feel confident about trying?

I've had a local Samba server at a workplace once that just werked, but I read that Samba is not recommended outside of a local network or something. I don't remember. I've read so much about shit I don't know about in such a short amount of time, I'm just confused. I just want to make some real progress.
>>
>>107514323
>Samba is not recommended outside of a local network
SMB and NFS are not recommended to be exposed to the internet. But you're not exposing them, since you're using tailscale. So you can just go ahead and setup SMB.
>>
First, I need to find solid info on setting that up as well. A no-fluff guide. I'll watch this first result for that on YouTube. It begins with the fucking guy making a cup of coffee, I'm so tired of people not staying on fucking point with their videos and guides. There's always some filler bullshit or they sidetrack into other shit.

I need to take a break and calm down, lol.

You just don't want to expose Samba to the internet. You want to have it closed off and access it via a vpn.
Use Arch and this guide for wireguard
https://sebdanielsson.dev/install-wireguard-server-on-arch-linux/

Create the folder where you're going to have the files like

/mnt/share

>#pacman -Syu samba

>#nano /etc/samba/smb.conf

[global]
server string = *hostname*
workgroup = WORKGROUP
security = user
map to guest = Bad User
name resolve order = bcast host
server role = standalone
server multi channel support = yes
aio max threads = 100
aio read size = 1
aio write size = 1

[*name of share*]
path = /mnt/share or whatever you made the folder
force user = *user you will use to access the share just use the servers user*
create mask = 0777
force create mode = 0777
directory mask = 0777
force directory mode = 0777
public = yes
writable = yes

This is a stripped version of what I have in my config. I doubt it's optimal, but it's what a guide told me to do a few years ago and it works.

>#systemctl enable smb

>#systemctl restart smb

That should be all you need to do. With the magic of the internet I'm sure someone will be compelled to tell me of anything I've said that's wrong. The main reason I'm recommending Arch is that I know of that guide off the top of my head and I think it's pretty good. Though Arch is really not bad now that you can just use Archinstall. I'd say the install script is better than any other distros installer I've used.
>>
>>107514443
I haven't done a lot with file permissions and user management on Linux. I've mostly done those things on Windows long ago, often with major difficulties, the old "following the instructions perfectly in every single way and it still doesn't fucking work" type of headache. I set up that Raspberry Pi Samba server at work when I was drunk 10 years ago and we didn't really need to worry about any sort of security. I don't remember much of it, haha.

Are there other recommended ways to strengthen security beyond Tailscale for my usecase?

This project has me realizing how much of my knowledge in this field is only the basics, and even those have gaps.

>anon can't right click a folder, go into the folder's properties and navigate to the 'share' tab
dear lord
it literally is that simple. You do this on the computer you want to access, and then lets say you're away from home at the starbucks on their wifi, you connect to the tailscale network, right click 'this pc' in your file explorer, and hit 'map network drive'. You put in '\\<tailscale ip>\<share name>', choose 'sign in with other credentials' and you use the credentials of that other computer's account
>>
>>107514680
I have absolutely no idea, but would love to find more on-point and pragmatic explanations of all these things with comparisons to other methods and tools. I've spent most of the week lost in the subject with 30 tabs open all the time, all related to little home file servers. Just trying to interact with a remote external drive as if it were local and keep it secure from others. I can't ever recall spending so much time on something that seems so basic and simple.
>>
>>107514728

>>
>>107514818
without tailscale, just two PCs on the same local network? Depends, did you share the folder and give read access to 'everybody'

In the process of sharing something you would have seen these steps
>>
>>107514728
>>107514818
Btw, it seems you gave instructions for Windows, but I would mainly use Fedora and Android to connect to it. It's not simple if I don't have the knowledge that someone experienced with these things has. I don't know how to verify the security, either.
>>
>>107514805
For starters If you don't deliberately expose a service to the internet by forwarding the ports and granted access in your firewall no one will be able to access any service on your home network without being on your home network. This can be anything. PLex server, SMB share, SSH and so on.

Then, on your local network you require credentials to login to any service. In your case SAMBA. You can configure it to require a username and password.

You can then manage permissions and access by creating specific user accounts and then only granting those user accounts access you want them to have. For example, you might have your own personal SAMBA login that can read and write anything and anywhere. But you could also create another account that can only write to a specified uploads folder and can only read the movies folder, they never even know your porn folder exists because they have no access.

Not trying to meme you, but these sort of general or entry level tech questions are some of the best use-cases for AI. I wouldn't ask jarvis to write my smb.conf, but you can absolutely have it sanity check what you are doing, or offer suggestions or guidance. .
>>
>>107514389
Anyway, that guy said that halfway through his video that his config was not very secure, so I ditched it and deleted what I had started typing in my config file. Looking at the examples it's full of, I don't know what most of it actually means. No understanding of cause and effect. Jesus Christ.
>>
>>107514854
>I would mainly use Fedora and Android to connect to it. It's not simple if I don't have the knowledge that someone experienced with these things has. I don't know how to verify the security, either
Use samba. You can define user access rules, like what everyone can get to, or make it so only certain users can access a particular share, etc
>android
go to the play store, type in 'samba' and pick something. I read that SambaLite is good but i've never tried accessing a share from my phone

lets say your computer's name is 'fapbank' with the account 'gooner'
config sambashare
option name 'hentai'
option path '/home/gooner/media/hentai'
option read_only 'no'
option create_mask '0666'
option dir_mask '0777'
option guest_ok 'no'
option users 'gooner'
option force_user 'gooner'
option force_group 'gooner'

Keep tailscale running on your computer and on your phone, you can connect to the share with either the tailscale ip or MagicDNS (if you have this enabled)
example for ip:
\\<fapbanks tailscale ip>\hentai

MagicDNS:
\\fapbank.cuttlefish-monstercock.ts.net\hentai

obviously thats not the actual domain name but you get the idea

What do these do?

>option users 'gooner'

I see user 'gooner' was specifically added. Why is 'gooner' forced? What is being forced? Why is a group that wasn't previously added being forced? I now realize I don't even remember anything about groups. This is what I'm running into a lot as well. An entire day could be spent getting to the bottoms of just these questions with Google.
>>
>>107515207
>What do these do?
sets the default file permissions when you create a new file or directory on the share
>I see user 'gooner' was specifically added. Why is 'gooner' forced?
lets say you have:
option users 'gooner,root'

if you access the samba share as root, you're still forced into the permission context of 'gooner'. If you didnt force this, and you accessed the share as root and made a file on the share, im pretty sure 'gooner' wouldnt be able to access it

Stop right there.
Go onto ChatGPT or DeepSeek Chat, explain your hardware and what you want to do, then follow along. If you get confused, tell it was you're confused about. If you get errors, cut/paste those in and tell it to fix it. If you have security concerns, describe them and ask for suggestions.

€300 + RAM and storage seems rather excessive for a device that will just be a router/firewall for a home network (bare metal since I don't want to virtualize my router). But I do agree something like that (or similar from topton, protectli, etc.) is a great package. Just not very budget.

Eh, if the initial requirements are
>opnsense + ideally 2.5G NIC
that already disqualifies a lot of cheaper arm/embedded shit
Wanting it to be power efficient also rules out older hardware.

If you want to compromise on things, you can just use literally any old pc/laptop you have and run everything over a single, physical interface as router on a stick.
100M WAN and probably not a lot of inter-VLAN traffic means you can probably get away with a 1G port as well.

I just came to say that I failed raid is apparently unrecoverable outside of slim chance of scraping something through professional data recovery. I lost some files I wont be able to replace, a lot of personal docs and somehow I feel relieved, unburdened. Depending on a quote from data recovery I may try to get some family pics back or not. I guess I was lucky enough to not experience hardware failure and data loss for so long - not once in almost 40 years.

raid5, sudden drive failure, automatic rebuild attempt fucked superblock on the good drives, leaving original superblock on the faulty one (it can be used for limited periods of time in an external bay, plugged via sata it drops in and out and it's not sata controller's fault) and overwriting three good drives with new metadata which allows it to assemble but the ext4 file system is inaccessible.
Data analysis points to the data being largely intact on the drives but it is impossible to mount the file system.

All involved in the development of DDR5 need to be brutaly and viciously murdered in the most painful way anything on earth has ever died along with their family and anyone that still copes about DDR5 being young and how it'll get better.
It's not young or immature it's straight up non functional garbage and a fucking regression from DDR4.

> trust your certificates
That’s what cert-manager is for, or some other form of distribution system within the network. You just need to install the public chain like any other certificate chain that comes pre-installed on main stream OS’s. The hard part is learning how the dumbass developers require certificate chains ordered because some libraries have some dumbass ordering scheme for some reason. Then there’s the nonsense with Java-based services, some of which only support Keystores (have fun with the keytool CLI, it’s hot garbage and doesn’t do what it claims it can do with PKCS7 chain files). Handling certificates is easy though with OpenSSL and a script file. Figuring out why some dependencies don’t like the standard setup is the true hard part:
> root + intermediate(s) public
> leaf cert in separate file
Then some of them want everything including the leaf public all in one file, others want it in reverse order. It’s all a shitshow

Two question about HDDs

1. What happens when the load/unload cycle of a disk is maxed out (usually in SMART that means dropping to zero from an original value of 100 or 255 or something)? Does the disk stop working? If it still works, does it mean you definitely need to replace it anyway?

2. Let's say I want to torrent seed ~5 TB of Linux distros. Seeding is based on lots of random small reads, right? Which would be better to seed that data from?
>1x nas or enterprise tier 8TB HDD
>or 4x 2.5" 2TB HDDs where the data is in either a RAID0 or a RAID5

Interesting.
There's so little space inside the unit that I have real concerns about how much airflow the drives will get (also I'm not sure if I could even find m.2 heatsinks that will fit), but I'm still tempted to try and install TrueNAS on one drive and run the others as ZFS mirrors.

How hard would it be to rig up a SATA DoM to use a standard SATA power connector for power, and use one of those for a boot disk to save on space? Most DoMs seem to use a proprietary pinout and/or include a 4 pin molex adapter for power but I'm not finding any basic adapters (for sale and in stock anywhere at least) to take advantage of the existing power connector that's right there.

You guys are probably the most likely to be knowledgeable about this. Can anyone explain to me how domain privacy works?
For example on namecheap, according to https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/278/37/what-is-domain-privacy/, they claim another company "puts their details on the whois database" - while supposedly you still own the domain. As far as I'm aware, you are indeed the legal owner according to ICANN, right? Or is that privacy company the actual entity leasing the domain from the TLD registrars, and effectively subleasing it to you?

As another example, Njalla is known to "buy domains in their name" to provide "anonymous domains" but they are also know to just seize customer domains because actually when you go through them, legally you own nothing. So I'm trying to understand the difference between Njalla's business model and Namecheap's one, or whether there is a material difference in the first place or whether it's just a matter of reputation and enforcement.

Another example is NiceVPS which also claims to "register the domain in your name", but doesn't have Njalla's reputation. So again I wonder how it relates, legally and technically speaking, to either Namecheap's model or Njalla's one, or whether there's no difference between any of them.
>>
>>107531630
you're just leasing the domain in the first place. if they offer to put someone else as the owner then who cares, ICANN obviously doesn't.
>>
>>107531630
>>107531693
also to add, some TLDs don't allow you to use these privacy protections. for example, if you wanted a .us domain you would need it to be the actual owner in the whois database.
>>
>>107531693
So literally just the only difference is how each individual company feels about their T&Cs and whether they're laid-back about it or highly neurotic? Does namecheap having status as a registrar (while say Njalla and NiceVPS don't) make any difference whatsoever here or not at all then?
