It's amazing how R1-0528 is still the best deepseek model. Still regularly switch to it when Claude or Gemini gets caught in one of it's over-exaggeration loops. Which makes it so weird that deepseek 3.1 and 3.2 suck so much they feel almost unusable by comparison.
Starting to have doubts that Deepseek will ever make a model that can compare to that version of R1, and that it was just a beautiful fluke.

AI seems utterly incapable of taking two or more concepts and blending them together. Like, if you asked it to mix together blue and red, it wouldn't create purple, it would create a checkered blue-red pattern. Imagine, if you will, a scenario, for example, a cyberpunk world ruled by catgirls. What I expect is a sci-fi what-if approach, thinking how these two concepts would shape the environment, its rules, traditions, cultural mores etc. What do I get instead? A big lump of cyberpunk stereotypes, and then a second, separate lump of catgirl stereotypes.

Since all models are, at their core, assistants designed to answer questions, this poisons all their output. An example that happened to me recently that really pissed me off for some reason: My character had to go to the bathroom in their own house, but it was occupied. This could have been a nice little point of conflict in the story. What does the AI do? It just invents a second bathroom! I've specifically designed the space to be cramped for fuck's sake.

Generally speaking, anything you say to AI has to be solved in the next response. This leaves it incapable of planning. More examples. You want a character to slowly fall in love with you. Impossible. By the end of their response, they are completely infatuated. Or when you want to enter some building populated by several NPC characters, expecting them to naturally live around the place like actual human beings. Ridiculous! The second you enter, every single character will rush to meet you. Whatever isn't solved is simply forgotten.

We've all encountered our Elaras, Eldorias, etc. This goes, of course, beyond names. How many times did we have pancakes for breakfast? How many times have I woken up in an unknown forest, only to hear the splashing of water from a nearby pond? This is a well known problem, so no point repeating it. What I take issue with is defaulting to stereotypes despite my instructions. Smut incoming. I've been trying to craft a specific framework when it comes to sex. But there seems to be some kind of global 'porn logic' the AI always defaults to, despite my specific instructions. And I point this out, and it always apologizes, and then it just does it again. I don't mind meeting Elara. But I do mind if my guidelines get ignored.

Following the previous point, the obvious solution would be to include more detail, tell the AI exactly what you are asking for, since it can't read your mind, right? However, this often backfires. Think of image generation - once you include enough keywords, the result will always be the same, no matter what noise pattern you start from. With text, the output will definitely be creative, but it will always generate the same output. Back in the day, models were dumb and there were several parameters you could adjust (all those Top P, Top K etc.) to help it out. Models today are smart(?) enough to no longer need those crutches (and honestly, sometimes I can't tell if adjusting temperature even does something).

But this has killed swiping and regeneration. When I swipe, I expect the AI to approach the problem from a different angle. What I get instead is the same solution as before, but with slightly different words. Example. It was early into a chat and I was swiping a response a lot because I was adjusting the prompt subtly to get the desired output. And every single time, inside that response, there was a girl present with short spiky pink hair. I have never specified that. It wasn't even tangentially relevant to what I was trying to adjust. But in this big block of text, somewhere in the second half, this pink haired girl would appear. How can an AI be truly creative when its path has already been laid out?

I can't believe how good Deepseek 3.1 Terminus is. Better than Gemini 2.5 pro with the same preset and a few changes.
