I need a laptop for school and work.
My max budget is $550

The most important features are:
- good keyboard and trackpad (Dont care about red eraser thing, I almost always use a mouse)
- good screen for readability
- good thermals
- modern bluetooth and wifi compatability
- slim light build for lugging it around and using it in random places

Use case:
- reading pdf files
- zoom meetings
- running bots
- multi-tab browsing
- light video editing on capcut sometimes

Chatgpt told me to get:
- Lenovo ThinkBook 15 Gen 4
or
- IdeaPad Slim 5
based on whats available as refurbished in the lenovo store

I had mixed experienced buying used shit. I don't want to fix anything I just want something that works and will last me a year or 2. I have a spare m2 SSD lying around.

Those regular ideapads may be okay but do NOT buy any 2-in-1 models, they will break no matter how careful you are. I’d imagine thinkpad x carbon series would be good for you.

Wish there was an oled x12, really want to try creating a tablet mode hyprland rice.

Any of you lads the tablet models? I killed my OS on my old T480 but it's been showing its age for some time now anyways.

Especially Linux side of things, just wonder what the experience is like.

Is i5-6300 and 8 GB RAM Yoga 460 still usable for web browsing, light coding, few Docker containers, 1080p YouTube, etc, in 2026?

For the most part they just werk. On Windows it's just your usual experience with touch screen and rotation support, On Screen Keyboard pops up when it makes sense. Linux it also just werks but with more caveats depending on your distro. GNOME/KDE is normally recommended for best touchscreen support since Wayland has had a lot of effort in to make it compatible. Since modern distros detect and run all the hardware with no issues X11 windows systems like XFCE can be adapted to be good as well with a few scripts, at the trade off of the screen briefly blacking out and refreshing every time you rotate it and having to manually open the On Screen Keyboard when necessary.

Any good options for 4k video editing around $1500? Looks like a Legion 5i would be decent, but I worry about its longevity.

>buy used t14 gen2
>in pretty good condition but ssd is only 256gb
>open and swap with 512gb
>decide to clean fan and cpu/graohics paste since its already open
>screw 1 for cpu heatsink is stripped beyond rubber band trick

still managed to clean and reapply paste but holy shit what a unexpected headache.
