just remember to fact check every shitpost and never take advice given here for granted, there is a concerted effort to fuck you over with disinformation to lead you into misspending your hard-earned shekels. you can, for lulz, also report the low-quality spamposts that shit up the thread.

Can anyone recommend me an external blu ray drive, or at least what qualities to look for? I need it exclusively to copy the contents elsewhere and will have a dozen or more disks to go through.

On a different note, could anyone give me some advice on selecting a CPU for a home media server? I'll have potentially 3-4 4k transcodes simultaneously, but would prefer to keep the power draw of the CPU as low as possible, or at least within reason. Is a GPU, even an older or low-end GPU, going to work better?

If I were you I'd jump straight to 20TB+ Enterprise drives Toshiba MG/WD Ultrastar/Seagate Exos
In lieu of that see if you can snag some old 10TB-12TB used HGST drives, but they'll be pretty old at this point but they are workhorses that'll still be good for a few years still
All this stuff will get expensive I'd say you should look at committing $1000 minimum to hoarding
Or you can just buy another 8TB drive, whatever is cheapest

AM4 only supports DDR4 no? You also need to flash bios to put in a 5800X3D (if you have it in hands, they costs an arm nowadays).
5800X3D should be able to handle a 9070XT but that's probably the limit.

Yep. I still remember when Walmart PC got shat on for having a Greatwall PSU that was silver colored with ketchup and mustard cables. And people who knew nothing about power supplies would say shit like.

Because nowadays only the very cheapest PSU's are grey anymore because of stigma. That was the only grey PSU that I saw on sale that even had an 80 plus rating. All others weren't even 80 plus rated. 20 years ago you could find very good PSU's that were grey.

the 4080 is not the successor to the 3080, it's the successor to the 3070, but it was so much better they raised the number by one.

Like i said it's a double whammy. Ada is a great arch, but Ampere was using Samsung's second-rate dog shit node too. I wonder if they could have gotten away with this if they were already on TSMC before Ada.

There's not a single AM4 cpu that supports DDR3. As for what is the best DDR3 supported platform it's murky.....

There's one rare Maxsun LGA 1151 V2 H310 motherboard that is really just a H110 motherboard that accepts 8th and 9th gen CPU's and this motherboard has DDR3 support. If you don't count that then LGA 1151 V1 is the best. So 6th or 7th gen intel. Oh and also LGA 1150 if you can get the i7 5775C since some times that thing outperforms 6th or 7th gen intel since it has L4 cache which was kind of intel's version of X3D back in 2015.

I want more storage. What do?
I have a 7800X3D and a 3090 and a msi b650 tomahawk wifi with a samsung 990 pro 4tb and 5 hdd's in a fractal design R4.
I want to get more hdd's but I need a bigger case.
Is the fractal design R7XL good enough for this?
It can hold nearly 20 hdd's which I think is more than I can connect.
I think I can get a pcie sata ports connector thing which would give me 6-8 more sata ports or is it better to upgrade my mother board as well as case so i can have more sata ports on the mobo and more pcie lanes to put sata connector things in?
Currently have 4TB nvme + 19TB of hdd's. Is it more cost effective to replace the 2tb hdd's first or better to upgrade my shit?

I question if you're using an Nvidia GPU on Linux if that's your opinion. There's a pretty major performance hit for games vs Win, and the OSS kernel module doesn't support some of the only features Nvidia is better at like CUDA and DLSS.

Need a bit of help. I just got a new PC - prebuilt unusually as the price hadn’t caught up to RAM pricing. Specs mostly what I wanted apart from an odd case and a MSI MAG i360 AIO.

The CPU is a 9950X3D, and I’m a bit baffled by its performance and temperature. Would welcome any advice or view on if this is normal:

Idle temperature is inconsistent, usually 43C, but then at times it spikes to 60C or so for several minutes. This is with no significant power draw (<60W in HWMonitor). When stress testing single-core benchmarks take it to about 70C, and multi-core it just rests at 95-96, which I think is normal?

However, on benchmark performance, the single core performance is pretty average form what I’ve seen, but the multicore performance is 15-20% low with the CPU running at 4.8-5GHz.

I have not undervolted etc yet, I’m just doing some stock tests to assess system stability (there are a few other issues due to transport damage so step 1 was to ascertain if it was dead).

Would anyone with more experience be able to share their wisdom - is this normal? Do I need to change the AIO? The varying idle temps remind me of an AIO I had with a broken pump.
>>
>>107758838
your temps probably shouldn't be that spiky on a liquid cooler but i am unfamiliar with newer ryzens and aware that their high power density is not something i've had to deal with.

then get the 16GB

transfer the files to the bigger one
then as i said just raid zero the entire thing
you will need a sata PICE raid card.
trust me way faster than on board as you have decated chip for extra speed.

used to do raid 0 for many HDD
s back in the day. but make sure they are the exact same model and make.

then its awesome hour.

I have an Antec Flux Pro.
It's nice. Thermals are very good, airflow out of the box is great. Comes with a lot of fans.
Build quality is good. Everything is toolless.

It's pretty big though. Unless you're running 420mm rads or some weird GPU bracket, your build is going to look kinda small in there.
Fans are filtered just with the metal meshing of the case itself. It's not great, but I guess the idea is not to impede airflow.

I was in a similar decision myself and went with the Antec just because I preferred how it looked.

Just for games and honestly I'll probably be mainly playing games from the last 5 years as I have a huge backlog. In terms of upcoming games so far I'm only interested in the ex Witcher dev's game and the Expanse game and the Divinity game. I play roleplaying games and action rpg's most of the time.

5080 is better for that use case. It's still faster than required and has the added advantage of not needing a lot of power for old games since there's much less hardware to power up

Looking for a laptop, preferably a second hand workstation, maybe any of you got any ideas:
budget $500~ ish

Most important thing is the screen, I'd like something nice for reading (manga etc.) and watching youtube/movies.
I thought of getting a 2018-20 x86 Macbook with their Retina displays, but I read that those can be quite fucky when it comes to installing and maintaining non-fruity OSes on them. Their display resolutions are also non-ideal as they're neither 1440 nor 4k so fuck that shit.

Use: web browsing/movies/manga/books
CPU: 8th+ gen intel/whatever is AMD equivalent, if any.
Gonna run Mint as my daily OS but I'd still like proper Win 11 compatibility without any extra fuckery.
RAM: 16GB upgradeable
Storage: doesn't matter, but has to be upgradeable
Display: As I mentioned most important, so preferably a 4K IPS. 15,6" or more.
Preferably built solidly as old workstations usually are.

I've seen bunch of stuff meeting the criteria from HP, Dell and Lenovo and would like to focus on those as I have good experience with second-hand workstations in the past.

Currently sporting a HP Zbook 15 G1 (Haswell) and I'm actually still happy with it when it comes to performance, but the display is atrocious, being the lowest tier 1080p panel it was offered with (shit contrast, atrociously bright black, very poor viewing angles).

GPU doesn't really matter, my Zbook has some nvidia card but it virtually always runs in intel iGPU mode. Pretty much all laptops I've checked out so far had some sort of dedicated GPU anyway so I guess that's a nice-to-have.

I have a pc, thinkpad and a pixel. I cant buy crapple for myself because I cant install free-software on it. On MacBook, I'd install Asahi, but that's probably not for mom.
