For similar modularity (except no ethernet), P1 gen 4-6
For similar size and typing feel, but limited RAM and storage, T14 gen 2 AMD
If you're rich and buy your laptops new, look at P14s Intel too

Asked on /wsr/ but not replies. Let me try it here.
I need to find an image of an asian looking woman using glasses, ponytail (I think) with bangs, holding a ThinkPad on her lap and I think there's something about GNU, gentoo or Lisp the programming language.
It was very commonly posted on /g/, but I can't find it or remember more details.

T430, not memeing, i've been using my T430 way more than my T480, upgraded to a quad core processor for $50 and it's been doing everything i need it to do with Arch, whereas my T480 continues to have weird hangups despite having a low-bloat Win10 IoT install

I've recently acquired a beautiful x230, I've flashed 1vyrain on it as I don't have hardware flashing tools yet. Anyways my question is does it's built-in ME cleaner get rid of enough blobs to not stress about it?
>>
>>107769712
I only trust Libreboot/Canoeboot on this matter, with external flashing.
>>
Do the P15 (gen 1/2) have any panel whitelists or can I just grab any panel I find on panelook that looks good (and is about the same width)?
How big of an impact on the battery life would something like a "low power" innolux FHD panel have vs a 4k ips or oled panel? Are we talking a jump from like 5 watt consumption to 15 watt or less than that? The only real time I would use the built-in display would be when I'm on the go so *some* battery life consideration would be nice even though it's a workstation.
Are HDR/10-bit panels just a meme or are they genuinely worth considering over a decent 8-bit? I don't care that I would have to switch to wayland for proper support.
Do I wan't to consider a higher than 60 hz refresh rate at all? I don't really play vidya other than the occasional dorf fortress session.
>>
>>107769712
Because 1vyrain is a software-based exploit, it is restricted by the Intel Flash Descriptor (IFD) permissions. It cannot gain write access to the ME Region (Region 2); therefore, it cannot 'neuter' or remove the Intel ME firmware. While 1vyrain can toggle a 'soft disable' bit in the BIOS settings, the full ME firmware remains physically present on the SPI chip.

Something like TP P52 or ZBook G6 looks most favorable for now, but maybe there are other good options I missed? Budget is $500-700 but obviously the lower, the better.

Recently got me a T14 Gen 2 (AMD) for the office to replace the old T450. What's the difference between the docking options on the Gen2 and do you guys think there's any point in getting the thunderbolt if I'm plugging a single monitor and a few usb dongles?
>>
>>107769995
Look, certainly I'm gonna use it in scaling mode most of the time, I just don't want to see physical pixels too much(and I do on my current 15,6" 1080p right now)
>>
>>107770016
From experience without Thunderbolt you're maxing out at two 1440p monitors and USB / Ethernet speeds become throttled.
One 4k 60Hz screen and a few USB2 should be fine too.

>>
>>107771289
yeah its NIB. the outer box had to have the tape cut because all of the labels were removed for whatever reason, but inside both the laptop and the associated dock had their own sealed boxes.
>$500-$700
thats about what i was thinking, but like you said its hard to tell. im much better at estimating the older shit, but something like the x220 is odd in that its still relatively modern while commanding a higher price than other laptops from the same era, most of which are currently ewaste until they get that ooo retro factor two decades down the line.

Back when I bought my x230 it had win 10 installed, I didn't mess with it much other than basic testing before paying the guy but it seemed fine enough if you have low expectations and don't know what a good PC really is. Most boomers I know would be fine with it.
Win 11 is significantly worse so I'd expect quite the performance hit, but I never tested it myself. If you go with it, do get at least 8 GB of RAM, don't listen to microjeet's 4 GB minimum. The computers I have at work should be well above the requirements for win 11 but they only have 4 GB and everything is slow due to it, at idle it uses 80-90% of memory. It's awful.
>>107773350
>x230 with windows 11 installed
How awful is the performance on that thing? Is it even usable for actual work? How much RAM is it using at idle and at basic load (I don't know what kind of work you do with it, but with whatever your usual programs are, all open).
>>107773730
Win 10 isn't officially supported anymore but microjeet will give you some security updates if you open your arse for them and accept their AI datamining dildo. Like I said before, it should be usable on your hardware. Most software probably won't drop support anytime soon so you should be good for 2 or 3 years.
Since it won't get official support and it's for someone else, I wouldn't install it unless the person knows a bit about maintaining it and can be trusted to not fuck everything up, or if you're willing to be tech support for them indefinitely. Mum is on win 10 still, for friends I only install it if they understand the situation and give me the go ahead.

I'm interested, but won't have a spare $500 until the end of the month.

>get T14 Gen 5 from eBay
>seems to be in good condition
>decide to update the UEFI and other firmware junk before I blow away the default Win11 install and put GNU/Linux on there
>6+ hours later I still haven't managed it
>Windows installer method for either of the two newer updates doesn't work
>bootable USB method (made with the batch script included in the download) doesn't work
>bootable USB method using the cd image +geteltorito to convert to img + dding to flash drive on my GNU/Linux PC didn't work
>can't install either of the two newer versions or the previous older one (was gonna see if I could downgrade then upgrade again)
>everything just says it fails to write
>did all optional Windows updates, none updated the UEFI
>booted Fedora LiveUSB and used fwupd, it can't even see a newer UEFI update available to install despite 2 newer ones being on the site

I've mostly given up on ever figuring this out, but what I wanna know is if there's any way this could be a hardware problem. I still have to leave eBay feedback and if there's an undisclosed hardware problem then I figure I could request a partial refund or leave neutral or negative feedback. The machine seems to work in general, it boots, but it's like the chip isn't writable for some reason. Oh yeah, I also tweaked various UEFI settings, user updates of UEFI were already enabled, I tried disabling Secure Boot and some thing with Persistence in the name, no difference made from any changes I made. The fact that every version and install method results in essentially the same error makes me think it's the hardware, but I've never really heard of that being a thing.

You got my hopes up since I hadn't tried this method yet, but it is similarly having trouble with the "BIOS Update Utility" update, it failed while the other driver stuff installed fine.
First I hit F9 in the UEFI, "setup defaults", no dice. Then I realized maybe you meant the factory reset thing under security, so I did that. Really thought it might work that time, was getting pretty excited, but it still says "Some updates were not installed correctly" and "something went wrong".

I've had a T420 running Ubuntu for years and it's been great.

Recently, it stopped suspending when the lid is closed. I think this happened with the upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky).

I've gone through the typical troubleshooting. It's configured to suspend on lid close, but it looks like the lid closed event never even fires.

acpi_listen doesn't show any lid event.

/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state exists and says "state: open".

journalctl | grep -i " lid " shows "FuPluginUpower failed to query lid state". More recent entries say "kernel: input: Lid Switch as /devices/LNXSYSTM: 00/LYNXSYBUS:00:PNP0C0D:00/input/input0".

Any ideas?
