I don't necessarily want an obsolete laptop, is there a decent new laptop to dual boot? I'd use windows for basically car scanning/flashing and linux for everything else, but I'd still use windows because fuck trusting car data connections further than you can throw the car itself. lightness is a great feature

instead of "decent" which varies from person to person, why not give us a max price range you're looking to spend

My kid got an amazon echo dot for kids as a gift. I don't have smartshit so it's pretty much useless: just plays iheartradio stations, tells jokes, and sometimes answers questions but it's really bad at this. Is there any way to turn this into something more useful? The concept of a chatbot + tts is good, but "Alexa" feels like 2010 technology.

I have a P8Z77-V LK, debian, realtek r8169. Just an old computer that I wanted to use as a mini server.

I cannot get wake on lan to work for the life of me. No matter what the NIC doesn't receive power in even S3, let alone S5. PCI wake enabled, EUP disabled, fast boot disabled... Ethtool lists it capable for wol and I have it enabled. /proc/acpi/wakeup I set root port and NIC to enabled.

d3cold switched to enabled for both too in linux. I think it's a firmware/hardware problem, but I'm not sure what to do or check. Just need the NIC to keep power on sleep at the bare minimum so I can wake on lan. Anything I should check/do?

Also, when dealing with an AIDS-infested drive, do I have to overwrite it with random data/zeroes, or is it sufficient to just write a new partition table and write new partitions?

Just new partition table. Nothing has a reason to read past that unless you specifically tell it to.

Is it normal that qbittorrent reaches about 120mb/s on my desktop, 50mb/s on my nas (same network as the desktio, 2gbps) and over 200mb/s on my seedbox? On Windows it writes to an ssd, on the nas on a mergerfs filesystem with 4x16tb seagate exos, on the seedbox not sure, I think it should be hdd too
>>
>>107790658
No, because that'll have a new partition record and a new filesystem. You'd have to go looking for stuff with something like photorec which specifically searches for lost data. Normal programs don't like to read uninitialized memory.

Mint has been pretty good to me.
I'm not interested enough in Linux/GNU yet to learn the command line, and I've been almost able to do everything I needed through the GUI. The only time I had to use the CLI was when I was installing software not found on the Software Manager application.
Couple quirks:
>HDR not supported out of the box
>new GPU support (IE 50 series and 90 series) can be hit or miss. I haven't used it personally, but Bazzite seems to be commonly recommended.

redpill me about EMP bombs
what do they actually do?
do they just blow fuses of electronic/electric devices and then just replacing the fuse fixes the problem?
or do they fuck it up beyond reasonable repair?
>>
I know it's a really shitty moment to buy a laptop but I really need it so here I am. I'm based in Italy and have to choose between the following:

>Lenovo 82XQ00NGIX IDEAPAD SLIM 3, cpu AMD Ryzen 5 7520U RAM 16 GB LPDDR5 SSD 512 GB, 15,6'' FHD, for 449 €;
>HP 15-FC0080NL Ryzen 7 5825U RAM 16 GB DDR4 SSD 512 GB NVME, 15,6 '' FHD, fore the price of 499 €.

I think the HP one is better because of the Ryzen 7 and the NVME SSD, but I'm not good at choosing this kind of stuff, anybody can help me choose?
>>
These captchas make it impossible for me to post. The effort is too great.
I would think nano banana can solve them for me, am I wrong on that?
>>
>>107795556
There's no such thing as an EMP bomb. The only way we know how to make EMP of any notable size is nuclear explosions. The media keeps this confused on purpose.

EMP is a radio pulse. With our current technology it's limited long wave because short wave dies off so close to the nuclear explosion it's academic. So you need to be attached to a conductor large enough to pick up long wave to be effected. Conductor picks up charge, goes to high voltage, anything attached goes zap.

It's the HP as far as processor, and it's not even close. 8 cores vs 4 and Zen 3 vs Zen 2(in spite of the 7520u numbering implying a newer gen).
The only thing that might be better about the Lenovo is that it's a Navi IGPU instead of Vega 8.

Real ram price per gb staying the same effectively means computing becomes much more expensive to keep up with because you will need more gigabytes as time goes on. It is natural for the price/gb to continually decrease. A leveling out of the real price per gb is almost as bad as an increase. Misleading way to use a graph to try to prove a point.

qB I/O can be tweaked, but it requires time and a good understanding of the bottleneck.
You can use `fio` on each device with a random-rw test to see what the storage is actually capable of.

You only need more and more RAM because the average consumer's RAM keeps going up as new buyers enter the market and hardware refreshes. If it stays the same or goes down, that's just one more metric devs have to spend time optimizing for.
