I don't necessarily want an obsolete laptop, is there a decent new laptop to dual boot? I'd use windows for basically car scanning/flashing and linux for everything else, but I'd still use windows because fuck trusting car data connections further than you can throw the car itself. lightness is a great feature

My kid got an amazon echo dot for kids as a gift. I don't have smartshit so it's pretty much useless: just plays iheartradio stations, tells jokes, and sometimes answers questions but it's really bad at this. I have a P8Z77-V LK, debian, realtek r8169. Just an old computer that I wanted to use as a mini server.

I cannot get wake on lan to work for the life of me. No matter what the NIC doesn't receive power in even S3, let alone S5. PCI wake enabled, EUP disabled, fast boot disabled... Ethtool lists it capable for wol and I have it enabled. /proc/acpi/wakeup I set root port and NIC to enabled.

d3cold switched to enabled for both too in linux. I think it's a firmware/hardware problem, but I'm not sure what to do or check. Just need the NIC to keep power on sleep at the bare minimum so I can wake on lan. Anything I should check/do?

Also, when dealing with an AIDS-infested drive, do I have to overwrite it with random data/zeroes, or is it sufficient to just write a new partition table and write new partitions?

Is it normal that qbittorrent reaches about 120mb/s on my desktop, 50mb/s on my nas (same network as the desktio, 2gbps) and over 200mb/s on my seedbox? On Windows it writes to an ssd, on the nas on a mergerfs filesystem with 4x16tb seagate exos, on the seedbox not sure, I think it should be hdd too
>>
>>107790658
No, because that'll have a new partition record and a new filesystem. You'd have to go looking for stuff with something like photorec which specifically searches for lost data. Normal programs don't like to read uninitialized memory.

I'm not interested enough in Linux/GNU yet to learn the command line, and I've been almost able to do everything I needed through the GUI. The only time I had to use the CLI was when I was installing software not found on the Software Manager application.

redpill me about EMP bombs
what do they actually do?
do they just blow fuses of electronic/electric devices and then just replacing the fuse fixes the problem?
or do they fuck it up beyond reasonable repair?
>>
I know it's a really shitty moment to buy a laptop but I really need it so here I am. I'm based in Italy and have to choose between the following:

>Lenovo 82XQ00NGIX IDEAPAD SLIM 3, cpu AMD Ryzen 5 7520U RAM 16 GB LPDDR5 SSD 512 GB, 15,6'' FHD, for 449 €;
>HP 15-FC0080NL Ryzen 7 5825U RAM 16 GB DDR4 SSD 512 GB NVME, 15,6 '' FHD, fore the price of 499 €.

I think the HP one is better because of the Ryzen 7 and the NVME SSD, but I'm not good at choosing this kind of stuff, anybody can help me choose?

>>
>>107795556
There's no such thing as an EMP bomb. The only way we know how to make EMP of any notable size is nuclear explosions. The media keeps this confused on purpose.

EMP is a radio pulse. With our current technology it's limited long wave because short wave dies off so close to the nuclear explosion it's academic. So you need to be attached to a conductor large enough to pick up long wave to be effected. Conductor picks up charge, goes to high voltage, anything attached goes zap.

It's the HP as far as processor, and it's not even close. 8 cores vs 4 and Zen 3 vs Zen 2(in spite of the 7520u numbering implying a newer gen).

Real ram price per gb staying the same effectively means computing becomes much more expensive to keep up with because you will need more gigabytes as time goes on. It is natural for the price/gb to continually decrease. A leveling out of the real price per gb is almost as bad as an increase. Misleading way to use a graph to try to prove a point.

should be able to copy directly from apfs to ntfs using linux, a livecd should do, just need to install apfs-fuse. alternatively you could do it over a network, but that may be slower if you only have gigabit adapters
>>
>>107802983
I dont know much about fuse but I've heard rw is risky? Livecd does seem like the way though you're right. Main thing I'm worried about is file names getting fucked, but idk if there's a way I can script how it would handle that
>>
Why does every single browser fucking suck now?
>>
>>107803349
while i've never touched apfs so i couldn't say how good apfs-fuse is, there's nothing technical about fuse which makes it unsafe for writing. moreover, you're not writing to the apfs volume, you're only reading from it. writing ntfs from ntfs-3g (also a fuse driver) is known to be safe enough™
as for filenames, it should be easy enough to write a script to find files with illegal characters (for dos/windows) and then you can figure out how you want to rename them. i'm pretty sure linux has no issue making illegal file names on ntfs, so you don't need to rename them beforehand. the limitation is with windows, not ntfs
>>
>>107803349
>>107803437
actually there's a third option, run windows in a virtual machine with the ntfs drive(s) attached to it, then transfer the data over a virtual network, which can be emulated as something faster than gigabit

I have a setup like this but it only has two monitors. it's actually pretty easy to do but the best way to about it is as follows

USB dock with 3 display ports (mine has two)
3 dp to your gaming PC
USB C switch for peripherals
USB to aux for your speakers

the only downside is you need to press the button on the USB switch but in my case the monitors switch over as soon as I plug in the one USB C cable into my laptop. you can get a green USB switch with a long as cable to mount to the desk

Shit. I just spent last night and this morning trying to get the nvidia drivers working on Fedora. Main issue was my ancient bios though. Its locked down bs that doesnt have much flexibility.

Yeah. Getting the drivers downloaded and installed was fairly straight forward. It was mainly some bullshit I was fighting the bios trying to get secure boot key imported. The bios on my board is horrendous. Its a commercial pc I bought years ago. I really want to build a new pc just to replace it.

I have used arch before but had some issues. I didn't try KDE with it though.

The idea is to block everything by default and only whitelist the sites you use, that way random ass sites you make visit but don't trust are unable to automatically run code.

An alternative to browsing sites you don't trust is to open up a VM/Sandbox and run the browser in that, that way if an exploit happened you would have a layer of protection, this doesn't eliminate any of the tracking disabling javascript would. If you're reading privacyguides the assumption is you already made the personal choice to prioritize privacy

How has your experience been with Arch when it comes to stability? The main reason I went the fedora route was that this was going to be my daily driver and I did not want it breaking or having to constantly fiddle with things. I need to be able to use it daily without issues. I wanted something that would offer a little bit of stability and I don't really have need for everything to be bleeding edge. Fedora seemed like a good middle ground for that.

So far, its been good. My issues have really been related to my shit HP bios and dual booting process with Windows.

yes.
I even overtightened some of them and cannot even take them off

why do I need a better monitor arm when this one is already rated for 10x the weight of my monitor and works fine for everyone else?

it's mostly dust + the camera and the bright light that makes it look much worse than it is in reality.
>at the screws on the back of your PC case

>your xbox controller
it's perfectly clean and i have no idea how you could even tell otherwise when it's barely in the picture
the only thing that really is quite dirty is the lamp + speaker which are both things I just don't give a shit about because they're half broken and will replace them soon.
also if you won't help can you just shut the fuck up, thanks.

ironically because everything is up to date there's less system instability for me at least. I don't think I've had a single issue related to stuff being "unstable" in the year or two my systems been installed.

that said I am going to do a reinstall onto a larger SSD soon.

actually the only issue I've had with arch is the retarded cache not clearing automatically
>>

i guess i'll keep it on for a while longer and see how many random sites i'm actually visiting over time. it's at least been a useful exercise to see how many sites completely rely on javashit

>you also overextended it in that pic.
it's like nobody in this thread even understand the concept of what a monitor arm is
this position is the regular resting position that it's supposed to be used at, and is literally how these are advertised everywhere.
how the fuck would I use it without it being "overextended" like this? the only other option would be to either have the last bit of the arm forwards (which means having the monitor like a meter away from the wall) or both pieces going different directions one after another which again, would look extremely stupid, be also very far from the wall, be in a configuration that i've never seen used anywhere ever, and still it would be off-axis relative to the pole.
plus i've already tried all of these things and of course it doesn't change anything.
they really should rename this thread from stupid questons to stupid answers btw, i was at least expecting the usual "try with a reinforcement plate" or something along these lines but no, "buy this same arm but of a different brand that's not even available in your country", "weld it", "clean your lamp", "wash your hands", "you're using it wrong", hilarious stuff.

No, you dumbass, it's not. The arm segments need to form an angle that is at most 90 degrees.
You're not using the arm for it's intended purpose, that thing is for an open plan office environment where desks are very deep and there's no walls in the way of the arms.
Take the L and put the monitor back on it's stand, you aren't getting any benefit from the arm.
>cannot read
Improve your hygiene, worms must be wriggling through your brain if you can't see how retarded this whole situation is, you could have spent 3 minutes cleaning the switch instead of automatically replying to everyone with inane excuses.
>>
>>107807238
>No, you dumbass, it's not. The arm segments need to form an angle that is at most 90 degrees.
ok, then explain to my why every single promotional picture of the monitor arm shows it that way, the manual also tells you to place it that way, 90% of reviews have pictures that show it that way, and nowhere does it say you cannot do that.
>You're not using the arm for it's intended purpose, that thing is for an open plan office environment where desks are very deep and there's no walls in the way of the arms.
it says it's for "your desk or gaming setup", nowhere does it mention it's for office use without a wall behind and again, most promo pictures show it with a wall behind it, used this exact way, so you need a source for your claims.
>Take the L and put the monitor back on it's stand, you aren't getting any benefit from the arm.
-looks cleaner
-helps cable routing
-allows me to have the monitor higher than what the stand allows
-allows me to bring the monitor closer to the wheelbase when i'm doing simracing without having to push the keyboard/mouse/whatever out of the way
-allows me to rotate the monitor enough to be viewed from my bed to watch kinos
-saves a lot of space underneath the monitor
yeah sure, it's completely pointless and I bought it because i'm stupid, and everyone else using a monitor arm is also stupid.
idk what the problem with retards in this bread is.
>cannot read
>improve your hygiene
hhhh thanks for confirming that you cannot read or something I guess? like what even was your point here.
>worms must be wriggling through your brain if you can't see how retarded this whole situation is
"the desk lamp which is broken and that I haven't touched/used in 6 months is a bit dirty and I don't want to clean it just to avoid retards on 4chins complaining about it" doesn't sound like an entirely retarded situation is, what's retarded is that so many strangers on the internet really care about the fact that my broken lamp is dirty more than i do.
>>
>>107807238
(i actually have to give another (You) because i hit the text limit
>you could have spent 3 minutes cleaning the switch instead of automatically replying to everyone with inane excuses.
no, my thought process was "surely it's not like people really give that much of a shit if one of the 1000 things on my desk is slightly dirty, i'm just asking for help with this thing and i've seen much worse out there" but no, apparently I was wrong, and that's insane to me.
I just cannot comprehend what's the point of partecipating in this thread when all your help is... this.
also inane excuses? any excuse is acceptable to me because it's none of your fucking business how dirty my broken lamp is lol, serously, you have a problem, not me.
>>
>>107806905

1. The switch is beyond regular filth and is by far the most interesting thing in your post.
2. You got good advice (get a better monitor arm, try adjusting yours so it’s 90 degrees) right away
now quit spamming the thread and burying other people’s stupid questions
>>
>>107807420
mine did not, it was a pain in the ass to get on
but because the weight of the monitor is pushing down on the tab, I don't think it needs to be super tight, it's just to prevent the plate from sliding if you try to tilt the monitor upward I think
>>
>>107807450
>things you post here are supposed to be interesting
...???
>you got good advice
no i didn't? you must be yet another retard that cannot read, jesus christ
>get a better monitor arm
the one that was raccomended is literally the same as mine but dropshipped by a different brand, which doesn't even exist in my country, plus there's no evidence that the monitor arm itself is the problem when it works fine for everyone else (including the other anon that reported that his works fine), that other anon suggsted it might be defective which is has an higher probability of being true.
>adjusting yours so it’s 90 degrees
I already said I tried that and it didn't work, plus there's no fucking way i'm using the monitor a centimeter from my face and using it differently than it's supposed to as a solution
I have no idea how retarded you must be for this to qualify as "good advice".
>quit spamming the thread
you must be ragebaiting at this point, a dozen retards (including you) complain about something completely unrelated (the fucking lightswitch being dirty) and i'm the one that's spamming the thread?
all i'm doing is literally asking a question and replying to some of that "advice", what the fuck am i supposed to do diffently? go back in time and clean the lightswitch? again, this is one of the most absurd things i've ever experienced here.
>>
>>107807499
so did you just use your hand?
because i didn't, since the manual didn't explain in any way how the fuck that was supposed to be done I decided to check wether the small allen key could fit there to tighten it
and it did... but I guess now it's stripped or something and I can't take it out anymore, so I can't easily remove the monitor from the mount itself to do adjustments without supporting it with something.
>but because the weight of the monitor is pushing down on the tab, I don't think it needs to be super tight
nta but it is supposed to be rotatable 360 degrees so... what if you put it upside down or portrait? it clearly needs to be tightened I think...
the pictures for mine do contain a spanner that would fix this problem for me, but it wasn't present in the box and the manual doesn't list it as a piece that it's supposed to come with it, they probably decided in the end to make us suffer and save a cent per unit on that.
>>
>>107807574
I used a small pair of pliers to tighten it as best I could, but because the metal is so soft it started to deform so I couldn't tighten it completely
For me I do not rotate it (just leave in landscape), it would probably be OK to rotate it to portrait because the side rails would push against the plate
But you would need to be careful when adjusting it left/right, and you definitely would not be able to flip it 180 degrees

I self host on a VPS, has worked surprisingly well.

You will not find it, and not only because search engines are useless nowadays.
Your cousin probably manually replaced the image that came with Windows 95/98, and the source image is probably something that he got from a friend and not from the Internet.

Any 7200 RPM one that fits your budget. It's worth considering an SSD if you can justify the higher cost.

Open the developer toolbar an look for errors, it should stop loading after about 2 minutes and then error will be clearly logged.

Yesterday my laptop went wild, started shouting and binging then an number popped up to call which I did. A man answered and asked for access to my laptop to stop it -then did a lot of work which I was able to watch and showed me I had no firewall and he could put one in, they let me watch the screen continually, showing 16 hackers and cleaning it up for about three hours, then setting a secure firewall in place. My laptop has never worked better than these past 15 hours

I have Chrome installed, just in case some sites don't work correctly on the browser I use regularly. I would just open that.
If it's anything other than searching the web I'd just tell them to fuck off.

IMO for a home user/desktop it's not worth it. The main downside is that your filesystem will be spread across all three drives so if you ever want to swap one out, move one, remove one etc. it's a hassle.
Also for SSDs, the closer they are to 100% full the worse the performance and the durability. So even the advantage of being able to use the drives very close to full by having large files/games spread out across two of them isn't worthwhile. I'd just use them as individual drives and spread out your games/files approximately evenly between them.

Cross-drive volumes mostly make sense in server-type architecture where you know for a fact you've built your server to spec and aren't gonna be changing it, and also if later you do want to change then you can wipe and reinstall everything (or just building/renting a different server also with little effort), and your persistent storage is somewhere else or on backups anyway.

I upgraded the storage in my Steam Deck (64GB->512GB) using Clonezilla to save the system to a microSD. Swapped the drive, cloned it back, everything went fine. When I went to extend the partition size, /home already had the extra space.
Is this normal, or am I going to get fucked when I try using the space?
>>
>>107813727
When you cloned the file system onto the new drice it already formatted it as a matter of procedure, there was just more space. There's no need to fuck with partitions at this point unless you want to
>>
>>107813560
It could be all three.

>>107813550
It depends on how you merge them and whether the added convenience is worth the effort (to you) of managing this.
On Windows I would never bother.
>>
>>107813742
I'm not used to things "just working", but I hope you're right.

I don't have a steamdeck but you can check and see if the entire filesystem is formatted correctly. I don't know if it uses NTFS or some derivative but check. If you're really unsure go ahead and create some dummy files, store them, and check their hash a few times after file changes. If they stay intact and uncorrupted then you are good. I think it's fine though.

least retarded way to clean a monitor? can't trust The Google anymore and every answer is conflicting

Depends on the monitor I imagine. Typically a microfiber cloth that's dampened with distilled water.
>>
>>107813727
It will be fine, clonezilla has an option to expand filesystems when restoring, you should have unchecked it because it does proportional resizing, which is retarded.
But your data is safe and everything will work, don't worry.

I thought I did, selecting "use table from image", that's why I was surprised.

Folks passed me down a Chromebook they had lying around. Figured I'd re-image it with another OS, but I haven't touched a Chromebook before. What's a decent enough beginner-friendly OS I could slap onto it? I'm gonna be giving it back to my little sister after so she can use it.

Briar or Bitchat?
Briar has been the "primary" option for internetless communication for years at this point but people often bring up "bitchat" as if it were something completely new and revolutionary
from what I've seen it looks like a vibecoded mess. Is there anything that makes it better than Briar?

Alright, I want to buy a Lithium battery backup (UPS). The "real" ones from recognizable companies (APC, CyberPower, Eaton, etc) all run $1500+.

"GoldenMate", a chinese battery company that is decently well respected for their Lithium cells have within the last few years decided to jump into the consumer UPS market with their Lithium cells.

The only problem from the reviews i've seen is that their UPS's dont have any sort of windows software and basically just rely on windows seeing that there is a battery connected and essentially pretending it's a laptop battery.

Which WORKS, but is hardly ideal and isn't particularly robust in how it reports charge level or how long it has left before it dies. IE, it can go from ~40% charge to 5% charge in a few moments.

How retarded/hard would it be to write a basic bitch program to monitor things more closely (I'm assuming the USB connection to the UPS provides SOME battery statistics, and windows is ignoring 90% of them because it's retarded)?

Or should I just give up and live with a UPS that is basically a black box of magic that controls when my PC turns off arbitrarily when the power goes out?
>>
>>107814802
puppy linux baby!
>>
>>107815055
For the best experience most people use NUTS (Network UPS Tools), where the UPS is connected to a Linux box acting as a server that relays UPS information to other devices

There's a GitHub issue where they're working on GoldenMate support, it sounds like its supported via the generic HID model (which is what Windows is using to report battery state), and they're working on supporting more device-specific fields
>>
>>107815174
Yeah reading through the issue thread and it looks like there isn't much more that it exposes to NUT, though it does seem to expose enough to set up a proper shutdown sequence.

I'll spend a few hours tinkering with it tonight to see if I can get it running on my windows desktop (linux tool, but it seems easy enough to build for windows).

I'd still trust a properly configured NUT setup over the basic windows power plan settings even if it doesn't expose live load readings, input/output voltages or similar deeper battery stats.
>>
>>107815269
personally I just use a USB charger connected to a GPIO pin via an optocoupler

if the 5V drops out it means the power went out, and the computer shuts down after a minute

(obviously this doesn't account for how much battery the UPS actually has left, but my personal experience is that the more complex a system gets the more likely it is to fail)
>>
>>107815055
>UPS
What's the point in using expensive and explosive lithium cells over conventional lead acid batteries?
>>
>>107815301
There is "GoldenChute" as well, but it requires soldering an Arduino board into the chassis of the UPS.

Ideally I want a full software solution that is "smart" enough to automatically begin on startup, restart the process if it ever crashes/freezes, and can monitor if the battery is plugged in or not, and then start a shutdown timer based on a power loss event. And also preferably have a backup that shuts down if the battery falls below 30% (even if it hasn't been on battery long enough according to the previous timer).

Reading through the NUT documentation and it seems like all of this should be doable, but might be a bitch to actually get setup.

As I said, I'll spend some time tinkering with NUT later tonight and see how painful it is to use in windows.

I live in an older part of the US that has frequent voltage droop. My previous lead-acid UPSs all died within 12-24 months due to frequently needing to swap over to battery for a few seconds or a handful of minutes while the incoming voltage is fairly low.
I'm tired of replacing my UPS batteries every year or two. So Instead of buying another $200-300 UPS with new batteries for $50-150 every year or two, I'm spending $400-500 once for a UPS that SHOULD last ~8-12 years without any need of new batteries in that time.

And lithium stands up to the voltage droop issues far better because lithium cells have 2000-3000 charge cycles compared to lead acid's 300-500 charges.
>>
>>107815312
Oh yeah, the cells are also LiFePO4, which don't suffer from thermal runaway and fires like many traditional Lithium-Ion cells.
LiFePO4 cells can also do deep discharge (90% discharge with no significant capacity damage)
And their charge/discharge efficiency is 92-98% compared to lead-acid at ~85%.

Oh and they charge 10x faster so if you get several voltage droops in a 1-2 hour period your battery will have no issues bringing itself back up to 100% before the next voltage droop. Whereas a lead-acid cell will be unable to re-charge the cells in only the 10-20 minutes between voltage droop events.
