im not a smart fella, how do i set up my second router as a switch thats directly connected through a 30 meter ethernet cable to my first router ?
the first router is the one thats actually providing internet

I have OpenWrt installed in Router 2, it has a DSL connector, a phone connector, 3 "LAN" ethernet connections, and 1 "Fibre" ethernet connection

Router 1 is set up as 192.168.1.1 and Router 2 is set up as 192.168.2.1 currently, but i believe i could set it up as 192.168.1.2 and have router 1 take care of IP assignation for both routers under the same subnetwork
>>
>>107823399
I imagine you just turn on AP mode or bridge mode. I don't think bridge mode uses DHCP though.
>>
>>107823399
>Router 1 is set up as 192.168.1.1 and Router 2 is set up as 192.168.2.1
They are in different networks now, which is not what you want.
Your LAN should typically have one network and one router. Switch the second router to AP mode, change its IP to .1.2, then plug the cable coming from the first router into any of its LAN ports, not WAN.
Things should just work then.
>>
>>107823399
Unless you need more than 1Gb I would honestly just get a $15 Gigabit switch instead.
Yeah there is probably some setting on the router to turn it into a switch but a dedicated switch just werks, doesn't need firmware (updates) since it's all hardware and consumes very little power.

To clarify: a router deals with IP addresses but a switch deals with MAC addresses.
All a switch does is send packages between ports based on a table of known MAC address per port, or just send it to all ports if the MAC address is still unknown after which it will get a reply on the correct port. - so simple it can be handled in hardware using a specialized chip that's been mass produced for many years in the case of 1GB.
By contrast a router is a computer that can do pretty much anything but like any computer needs software.

Alright, i was just afraid of breaking something if i set it up on the same subnetwork
It is now set in bridge/switch mode on 192.168.1.2 and connected to the main router from one of the LAN ports

DHCP is disabled on Router 2 so that Router 1 takes care of it

that should be it right?
is there anything cool i could do with openWrt besides for this?

All features from the primary router should affect the switch, not likely the other way around. If you want a bunch of wild features try making a router with opensense or pfsense. Only thing I would personally use is geoblocking for lower ping on my online games.

1.95 MB JPG
Is there a documented way to customise the LG Magic Remote, either by flashing a different firmware or editing the existing one?
There is a debug header on the PCB.
My main goal is to completely disable or remap the 6 advertisement buttons, but it would be great to implement a toggle for the retarded "magic mouse" which is almost always triggered unintentionally.
>>
>>107824056
Buy a universal remote? That remote looks like it's seen better days.
>>
>>107824056
If you are willing to root your LG TV (using tools like RootMyTV), you can use the community-developed Magic Mapper app. This allows you to intercept the specific keycodes sent by the Netflix, Disney+, and other advertisement buttons and remap them to system functions or disable them entirely.

For the "Number" buttons, you can long-press 0 to open the Quick Access menu. While this doesn't help with the dedicated app buttons, it allows you to repurpose the 1–9 keys for specific inputs or apps.

Since you’ve opened the remote, the most "brute force" way to disable the advertisement buttons is to apply a small piece of Kapton tape or non-conductive material over the button pads on the PCB. This physically prevents the circuit from closing.

If you hold the Home + Back buttons for about 5 seconds, the remote will de-register its Bluetooth pairing. It will then fall back to IR (Infrared) mode. In IR mode, the directional pad and power work, but the cursor and voice commands are completely disabled. (Pressing the "Wheel/OK" button will re-trigger the pairing process, so you'd have to avoid that specific click or repeat the de-registration.)

The 4-pin (VCC, RX, TX, GND) debug header on the PCB is typically a UART interface (3.3V TTL). While it provides a serial log of the remote's internal state, LG uses proprietary Broadcom or MediaTek Bluetooth stacks. There is currently no public "Custom ROM" for these remotes because the firmware is signed and the hardware is highly specialized. If you have a USB-to-UART adapter, you might be able to see the bootloader output, but without the original source or a compiler for that specific SoC, editing the binary is a monumental task for an individual without prerequisite experience in this particular area.

Left-click and hold any random file on your desktop.
While holding the left-click, press the Esc key on your keyboard.
Release the mouse button.

Try clicking and holding a file, then right-clicking while still holding the left-click.

Move another window (like Notepad) over the stuck icon.
If the icon stays on top of the new window, it’s likely a system-level process or a transparent overlay.
If the icon is hidden behind the window, it belongs to the application that was open when the icon first appeared.

Sometimes the data is stuck in the system's temporary drag-and-drop buffer.
Open cmd, and type or paste the following command and hit Enter:
echo off | clip
This clears your clipboard, which can sometimes force the system to drop the "stuck" object data.

Final trick, press alt + tab and hold Alt so it cycles through all of your windows. This can sometimes reset things.

Unless your motherboad OEM was retarded, basically all X570 boards use the CPU USB 3.2 Gen2 connections on the rear IO, with the PCH USB 3.2 Gen2 connections getting used internally (internal USB 3.2 header).

High speed rear panel IO is almost always directly linked to the CPU, not the chipset.

Unfortunately I think I may already know the answer here, but I'm reaching for ideas.

I was in the process of upgrading my RAM and SSD on a 2021 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (GA401). And just before I was able to disconnect the battery my finger drifted over a capacitor and I felt and heard a spark...now she won't boot.

I was grounded too so I'm pretty sure the charge game from the laptop itself.

I've tried a few troubleshooting combinations, like holding the power button for 40-60 sec while unplugged, doing the same while plugged in, and doing the same with the battery disconnected. Holding the power button for two minutes, five minutes, etc.

Is this at all repairable or should I start shopping for a new machine?

The Best Case: You blew a fuse or a power MOSFET. These are designed to fail to protect the more expensive chips.

The Worst Case: The surge traveled through a data line or a low-voltage rail directly into the CPU, GPU, or the PCH (Platform Controller Hub). If the "brain" of the laptop took high voltage, the board is likely dead.

A skilled technician with a multimeter, thermal camera, and soldering station can identify which specific capacitor or MOSFET burned out. They can swap that $2 part, and the laptop might spring back to life.

Keep the laptop vents elevated and free from blockages to keep airflow fresh and cool at all times

If you're really concerned, get a high-end laptop cooling pad with a sealed gasket (pic related)

Also you can set the battery charging limit to 60% if you don't plan to travel with it often so that it doesn't stress the cells by charging it to 100% all the time.

And the final thing you can do is undervolt your CPU and GPU to produce less heat (and sometimes a bit less performance, but usualy not much).
>>
>>107825290
That hasn't been recommended advice in ~10+ years.

Modern laptops often use hybrid power delivery where they handle the background load from A/C power, but any transient spikes are taken care of by the battery, if you remove the battery you can really fuck up your performance and cause more issues than you "solved".

You're far better off just using proper cooling, undervolting the components, and or using software to limit battery charging to below 100%.
>>
>>107825238
Work the battery a couple times, let it drain to 5-10% then charge it back to 100%. Repeat 3-4 times. You can also probably set the battery to only charge to 80% capacity in your bios.

You want to keep 10-20% of an SSD open or else you'll tank performance.

With smaller drives (less than 500GB) you want to use 20%. With larger drives (1-2TB) you want 10%. With very large drives (4TB+) you only need to leave ~5% open.

The more work your components are doing, the more power they use.
If you can make them do less work, then they'll also use less power, extending your battery life.

>>
>>107826596
SSDs can't just overwrite old data; they have to erase a whole "block" before writing new "pages." If the drive is full, the controller has to shuffle data around like a sliding tile puzzle to find a spot to write, which causes massive slowdowns

Many modern consumer drives use a portion of their free space as a "high-speed cache" (SLC mode). When the drive is near full, this cache shrinks, and your write speeds can drop from 5,000 MB/s to as low as 500 MB/s (or slower).

Your OS (Windows/macOS) constantly creates temporary swap files and "page files." If your C: drive hits 99%, the whole computer will stutter, even if the SSD itself is fast.
>>
>>107826590
ripping a DVD doesn't require a video card, it is copying data
>>
>>107826605
>SSDs can't just overwrite old data; they have to erase a whole "block" before writing new "pages."
Can't they just erase that old block and then write the new data? Does it have to write it first on the free space and only then erase the old stuff?
>cache and write speeds
I don't get it. How can cacheing improve write speeds? Read speeds fine but how does it affect write?
>swap
I've made my own swap partitions and set their size, the system doesn't let me shove any data in there and doesn't mess with their allocated size, it won't grow or shrink them on it's own. Also swap only matters if you don't have enough RAM.
>>
>>107826590
Are you actually copying the DVD or are you transcoding?
>>
>>107826647
>Can't they just erase that old block and then write the new data?
Technically, yes, but it is painfully slow.
In an SSD, you can read or write data in small "Pages" (usually 4KB or 16KB), but you can only erase in large "Blocks" (which contain hundreds of pages).
If you want to change just 4KB of data in a block that contains 2MB of other data, the drive cannot just "zap" that one 4KB spot. To erase that spot, it has to erase the entire 2MB block.
keep things fast, the controller doesn't wait to erase. It finds a fresh, already-empty page somewhere else, writes your new data there, and simply marks the old data as "garbage."

If your drive is 99% full, there are no "fresh, already-empty" pages left. The drive is forced to stop your transfer, find a block, move the "good" data out of it to a tiny temporary buffer, erase the block (which takes a long time in computer-terms), and then finally write your data. This is called Write Amplification, and it’s why a full drive feels like it's "stuttering."

>I don't get it. How can cacheing improve write speeds? Read speeds fine but how does it affect write?
It seems counter-intuitive that adding a step (caching) makes it faster, but it’s about voltage levels.
Modern SSDs (TLC or QLC) store 3 or 4 bits per cell. To do this, the controller has to precisely "aim" the electrical charge into 8 or 16 different possible voltage levels. This precision takes time, like trying to fill a bucket exactly to a specific millimeter line.
SLC Caching tells the controller: "Ignore the precision. Just blast the cell with either 'Full' or 'Empty' (1 bit)." This is incredibly fast to write.
Later, when you aren't using the PC, the controller quietly goes back, reads that "blasted" data, and carefully re-packs it into the dense 3-bit or 4-bit storage.

Why free space matters here: Most consumer SSDs use Dynamic SLC Caching. They "borrow" your empty storage space to act as this high-speed buffer. If you fill your drive to 95%, the drive has no "spare" cells to borrow, so it's forced to write in the slow, high-precision mode immediately. Your write speeds can drop from 5,000 MB/s to 200 MB/s instantly.
>>
>>107826647
>>107826665
>>107826676
>I've made my own swap partitions and set their size, the system doesn't let me shove any data in there and doesn't mess with their allocated size, it won't grow or shrink them on it's own. Also swap only matters if you don't have enough RAM.
You are 100% correct about your Swap Partitions.
Because you’ve manually allocated them, the OS won't grow them.
However, the SSD Controller (the hardware chip inside the drive) doesn't know about "Partitions." It only knows which physical cells have data and which don't.
Even if your Swap Partition is empty of data, if the SSD controller thinks those cells are "allocated" to a partition, it might not use them for its background maintenance unless the OS has sent a TRIM command to tell the controller those specific sectors are actually empty.

Even if you have 64GB of RAM and never touch your Swap, the SSD still needs "breathing room" (unallocated or TRIM-cleared space) to perform the high-speed voltage tricks (SLC Cache) and the block-shuffling (Garbage Collection) described above.
>>
>>107826665
I see.
I know they're much slower at their fastest but do HDDs have the same issue? Or can they write on as small a block as they want, regardless of size?
>>107826676
>>107826680
I guess that does makes some sense.
>>
>>107826702
HDDs also slow down at higher filled capacity, but it's for entirely different physics reasons. (where the data is physically located on the platters).

u can set it in bios with rtx 4080
>>
>>107827752
i mean you can also return it, but it's possible that the error is on your end in your settings
But if you wanna be extra sure then you can return it and if another one won't work either then it's probably your settings. You if you don't wanna waste time u could return it

yeah. i'll try setting the pcie to 4 in the bios tomorrow. but i don't think it's that. afaict that's only a problem with mobos that support pcie5. mine doesn't. but i'll try anyway. i'll try the other pcie slot if the gpu fits in it (i think it will hit the psu shroud) but even if it works there, it won't be usable to me since i'll have to disconnect all the sata cables

>>107827757
i wish it would just work. but if i have to use it with a different pcie slot or something weird, it might be as good as bricked. i don't want to have to get a new motherboard for this either, when all the other parts in my system are fine

I got a Costco PC with a 5080. What is a game I can use to really show it off?

Full disclosure, my screen is only 1440p, but it is 120hz.
>>
>>107828851
Probably anything with a realism mod. Just see if there's any good mods for a game you already enjoy.

anyone used the ATK a9 pro extensively?
i know it's an >expensive chink mouse
but honestly thats the most i can spend for a mouse. the scyhrox v6 might be the topdog but i really cant stretch to that
the vxe r1 pro is in the similar price range but there were QC issues (plebbit) of double clicking

I've been using Linux (nobara) for a month now. Should I be hibernating my PC? There's a 10% chance it fails whenever I click it, which I usually do when I turn in for the day, so the lights are still on when I go to my desk the next morning.

Should I just put it to sleep? The problem with sleeping is that there's a 30% chance it turns itself back on for some reason.

I assume this isn't exactly what you asked but 2.x kernels are sometimes used in embedded applications like Wi-Fi router boxes and stuff like that. Wi-Fi support came in 2.6 and if I recall correctly that's the branch used in picrel.
You can still clone those older Linux branches from their official Git.

>and it does need to work with these "cable" ports. since thats where im currently getting my connection from
Cable as in cable-TV? idk if you got much options on those. And even if you do you got to register your new modem's MAC address with your ISP, the cable a shared medium and customers are identified by their modem's "hardware addresses".
What you could do/try instead is disable the Wi-Fi and everything and put the thing in bridge mode. Then you'd plug in a router of your choosing after the cable modem.
>do antennas actually do anything?
I assume you mean external Wi-Fi antennas, there are always antennas in those things. With external antennas you can play with bigger and sometimes directional antennas instead of relying on the manufacturer's more or less random solutions.
