Nobody reasonable is actually expecting AGI from current-architecture LLMs. They mean something else but journalists are tech illiterate and don't care anyway, they want a catchy headline, so they'll distort everything just to get more clicks. Or,2. The claim is hype blown out of proportion by constant repetition and modification on social media, like Chinese whispers but dumber. You've heard of it specifically because it makes people go "whaaaaaat???"I suppose it could be a bit of a mix of the two as well.
