I had a weird Windows Defender SmartScreen looking popup about updating copoilet that only gave me the option to close, saying I shouldn't open certain apps until it's done. I have Ublock and noscript on so I don't think it's from a popup, and malwarebtyes and anything else cannot find any viruses or malware. What the fuck is windows doing?

Being lightweight can't be the reason since you can use alpine for lxc and I don't see it as inherently more secure since it runs as root ....

time to market, LXD is younger than docker, config for LXC containers pre LXD was more tedious which is a problem Docker solved, as it was originally based on LXC

You decide. If everything you need is already packaged as Docker images then use docker. If it's packaged as Linux deb/rpm then use LXC.
Me? I run docker inside LXC because I only need it to build docker images and fuck giving docker root on my server.

Another major difference to consider: docker containers are ephemeral and any data you modify or create inside them is gone on restart (unless you put it on a volume), whereas LXC containers work like VMs – all data is there after a restart.

I started to use LXD just to try things out in CentOS (without installing it) because I was running Ubuntu on my work laptop while most customers had CentOS servers. It was very easy to get up and running.
An LXC container is set up like any computer, you install packages, enable SSH, configure networking, enable services, the lot. Just the kernel is inherited from the host OS.
I configure my containers with Ansible, SSH into them to tweak configuration or install updates, and sometimes upgrade them in place just like I'd do on a physical server.
So for me LXC replaces VMs (although LXD/Incus can spawn real VMs, I don't have a use for that yet).

LXD is a tool to interface with LXC, it still uses LXC under the hood, these system containers are not standardized between vendors, so it is mostly preference, ecosystem and documentation that makes the difference

Anyone here tried these portable emulation machines? They seem very well priced and they tend to mimmick some existing handheld, i just find it fantastic that some are even priced at 5,20€ like picrel, i assume it may have total dogshit buttons and the worst CPU possible unlike the 20-40€ handhelds

My laptop fan started rattling (sounds like either bearing was dying, or something else mechanical was fucking up), and after a couple of weeks of this today it sounded like it was going to explode - a LOUD buzzing noise as if it was physically scraping against some physical obstruction at high speed.

But what happened next is that somehow it started running at max(?) speed and it runs smoothly. As if there's some kind of vibration resonance mode that only happens at low/medium fan speeds but is completely absent at max speed.
Not only that, but since that the loud grating episode happened earlier today, the fan has been running on two modes: completely off or max speed. Consequently it's been completely smooth with no rattling or buzzing or vibrating, except that it's audibly blowing like 80-90% of the time since it can only turn off for so long before kicking back up to max again.

All of this has left me extremely confused. After two weeks of buzzing intermittently, it sounds like it's going to rip itself apart but somehow fixes itself by always running at max speed. Is it something in the firmware detecting vibrations and somehow adapting to find a frequency that doesn't resonate? I've never heard of this being a feature. It's a modern thinkpad (T14), I'm running gentoo and no particular fan control programs (not even thinkfan - I'm not sure it's even compatible with modernt thinkpads) so it can's possibly be something in the OS (unless the kernel has fan vibration support), so I'm absolutely mystified. Does the vibration resonance theory even make sense? It seems sketchy to me but I don't know what else could possibly explain that somehow going to max speed fixes the rattling problem, when I thought the bearing was going to die for the past few weeks.

How well with a WD Black HDD deal with just being used for cold storage? Can it stay on all the time. Because of the current environment I'm starting to pull out all my unused drives and put somethings on them for cold storage.

I would've almost thought the fan cable was getting into the blades and the PWM wire got torn open or something forcing it to run at max voltage, except I did open it to clean a bunch of dust like 5-6 days ago (it did nothing to change the buzzing btw), and the fan cable is routed around the casing in a way that makes it basically impossible for it to get anywhere near the blades. By deliberate design, I imagine. So I'm almost certain it has to be software.

If fans were more complicated I'd say "maybe the control circuit died!" but I'm pretty sure 99.9% of computer fans are purely electric rather than electronic, the cable either carries PWM power or varying voltage and the motor responds directly thus resulting in variable speed. So again the fan control shifting to bang-bang mode must have happened at the control level, in either software or firmware somewhere. No?
