After 10 years in software dev I'm considering going into sysadmin stuff. There's an entry-level job opening for an Azure cloud network specialist nearby. What's working with Azure professionally like? I have some experience with Debian and Proxmox servers (personal server and managing a couple internal servers at work), but I assume this would be a completely different experience?
>working on long (over a year) multi-team project>constantly ahead of the other teams, never blocking them>get stuck by third party software failing one time, I become a partial blocker for like 3 days>"anon, this is unacceptable we really need you to unblock us, do you need more help from your team?"
>>107994977why do you think stating reality, that you are currently a blocker, is a personal attack?
>>107994456Why would you switch? If you don't know anything about the cloud, you can sign up for Azure for "free" (with a CC) and get free credit for the first month, after than you have a year where you have some things that are free up to a certain usage/provisioning limit, then some of that goes away after a year.Is it a completely different experience? Not really. Networking still matters as you will set up private endpoints and stuff for resources. VMs are still used, but Azure also has a lot of PaaS stuff too like App Service and managed SQL. There's a lot of things too like AIS (API Management, Service Bus), Functions (serverless). Azure DevOps is also used by companies. I don't think any of these are massive paradigm shifts from what already existed, they're just configured differently. There's just a lot of shit to learn, which is also why Azure certs are considered the hardest of the 3 cloud providers. I'd also recommend learning IaC.
>>107995093I never said it was a personal attack, autist, but it is still annoying. The group team lead's team is constantly behind, so whenever anyone else blocks for any small period of time she extremely harps on it in the weekly meetings to try to shift the blame
anyone know what to do when work contract is close to ending? they're supposed to make it permanent but it's their opportunity to get rid of mehaven't heard from them yetit's in a few monthsguess i should start looking for new job regardless?

Now that all desk jobs are obsolete, how are you lads planning on supporting yourselves in the future? Possible careers:>Fast Food, they'll always need a human wagie to clean the bathrooms>Trades, you can join a crew of immigrant handymen at the Home Depot and make $5 an hour>Prostitution, renting your bussy by the underpass next to Costco>Welfare Leech, good luck getting neetbucks if you're white and maleThe possibilities are endless. Zero opportunity to improve on a valuable skill or do any kind of meaningful work. + it all goes to ZOG so thats bad too... The amount of boomers that have been at this same company for 40+ YEARS is astounding. True definition of wagecattle. >>107994437>>107995375>>107995375Seriously for a moment, how secure is everyone's job here right now? I just graduated college last year and for the past two years I've been the everything guy regarding technology doing programming, devops, scripting, tech assistance working on research tools for a small team in the government. The job is amazing but I'm still working with them on contract receiving a pitiful salary. After slaving for them and doing work they've tried to do for years in the span of months they're finally reserving a spot for me in their team which should come with an actually livable wage, but at the same time they keep talking about LLMs being able to do all the heavy lifting. Reassuringly the slop they've made with LLMs is always broken but the simpler Python scripts I've made which are a part of my job are actually trivialized by LLMs. As it stands right now I have no reason to worry since LLMs still can't do absolutely everything especially not work on the niche research tools we do. But each of these layoffs has me increasingly worried. With that being said, what is the best field to start up-skilling towards? I'm guessing kernel development and embedded systems with time-critical applications, in other words things that can't afford to be shit. Since everything else is just is just going to be made as cheaply and low quality as possible since current hardware can support anything. What else?>>107995980I have a friend working in defense for the same amount of time and it sounds mostly the same with the boomers. The work he's doing sounds pretty high effort and meaningful but it's still not something I'd have pleasure working on and you can expect your coworkers to be misanthropic assholes as a result of the nature of the topic.

I can think of a million and one ways on how to do shit but then I have to write a shit amount of documentation and powerpoints trying to sell a feature I frankly don't give a shit about for a third party vendor. For example:>We need to automate our SOPs>oh we could use "x tool", "y tool" >good idea anon, can you send me a deck on comparing the two and what's better for our use case? also you can't reach out to the vendor since we don't want to get solicited it's just like what the fuck man how is this my operation? you hired me just to code dude.

>>108007252Be that as it may. I'm gonna turn 30 soon and lost a lot of time to health problems. It's starting to feel like I'm running out of time (time to do what?) So since it's managed by the state, obviously, I'm not dying under the work load. But I do have to be there 3 days of the week and they're paying for 5 day the whole year (450€for my daily rate since it's my first freelance job, I know it's shit but I accepted it because I can work on IA stuff this year, I'm planning on using this as a leverage to get an actual IA job next year that I can charge like a pig.So the work I'm doing during these 5 days per week, I can pretty much do it in 3. So I was wondering if it's easy to get jobs that would pay 2/3 days per week. And if anyone had tips. >>108014126That's true. The killer is the project was well documented and we were talking, a lot. The problem is that he needed to create an isolated endpoint for new functionality and instead, did all the work in an existing endpoint (bad) and didn't even put in any logic so that the new functionality breaks the current one.The bad thing on my PoV is I either missed the earlier PR where I should have spotted him doing the wrong thing or I wasn't paying enough attention to context and got focused on syntax. The other thing is that it would be pretty shitty for the outcome of the review for this to be "there should have been more babysitting of him".
>>108014290lmao did you hire someone from /utwg/ or what? any dev with a bit of common sense would question if breaking an existing endpoint was part of the plan

>>108014136Sounds like somebody is an angry 115 IQ midwit scared of test taking lmao
>>108014355I think it's probably my fault he got on the wrong path. The new Endpoint is doing a near identical workflow to the one he's broken (difference is API syntax and where some internal API calls go)I said to him, we need to make sure we're not duplicating code and making bug fixes/changes twice as hard to he should use as much code from the current workflow as possible. Rather than using the same functions/classes and maybe moving some code to make it reusable he's taken that to mean "put the code in the current workflow".But yeah, he really should have been questioning that he was clearly breaking existing code. Not at least wrapping it in "if (using API-B) {...}" is just... odd (that's also bad but it's at least understandable). The more I think about it, the more he hasn't been reading the diagram that named the new workflow. It did say the new functionality is in a new endpoint called XYZ.Anyway, the weekend now, need to forget it and deal with whatever on Monday.

>>108014550>>108014290>it would be pretty shitty for the outcome of the review for this to be "there should have been more babysitting of him".I get the sentiment, sometimes someone just does a fuckup and all you really can say at a retro is "mate get it together". If your team has a good atmosphere you should be able to bring it up but soften the blow, remember to blame the process not the person (already sounds like you are trying to). If it's a reoccurring issue, you can of course bring it up professionally in a meeting, but especially if he's a junior he might have issues with taking critique in such a setting or speaking freely. 1 on 1 it's usually easier to get those people to talk at first, maybe during a break or something. Just remember that you guys have the same goal, so if you can find a way you can help him make less mistakes then that's good for you because it means you have to fix less mistakes too.All of this is unless your work environment or job sucks, in that case document your contributions to be able to show them later and try to get a promotion/jump ship with that. If you want to be nice and help him you can, but fixing the process is the manager's job arguably.

I was interviewing for an internal position I was recommended for, but I am fairly sure I could use this to apply for other positions at other companies. I would just have it slightly rewrite the resume to tailor to whatever job posting I was applying for.

My teammates have been lazy cunts and relied on me and another guy way too much, had enough of it today and brought it up in a meeting. Manager supported me and assigned them my work and that guy's for the next few weeks to see how they handle it. Other teammates now probably hate me and I don't give a flying fuck. I've been wanting to call them out for so long, done and fuck those fucking cunts.

>>108017027Yes, I want to quit.I fucking hate this job. I'm almost 40, I've worked at several companies, and this is the most miserable "real" job I've ever had. It's a company you've heard of too. I guess to be fair, other parts of the company might be alright, but the product group I'm a part of is awful.
Is it worth it to get an associates degree in application development? I have a bachelor's in English, and perhaps it is time I learn to code....I guess the real questions are, for any app developers, SWEs, code monkeys etc...>what does the majority of your working day look like?>do you like your work?>would you recommend this field to anyone?>what is a good way to gauge if this is the field for me
>>108017146im telling you for your own good, fuck offthe field is saturated, miserable, and won't get better. if you have a degree in some bullshit like english you don't have the autism to survive this field. the only people left are locked ins with no alternative or genuine autists that still enjoy this shit. you don't need a degree to "learn to code", and if you're considering getting one before opening up an editor you shouldn't be in this field.you will spend a lot of time and money on that degree, and in 2 years you will have nothing to show for it. you have no chance of getting a job at this point.
