have an old tower lying around that I got for free a few years ago, what should I do with it?

specs of the shit tower:
CPU is a Haswell i5 4570, GPU is a GTX 950 and it has 8GB of RAM (it had 16GB but it was mismatched RAM) and a free HDD I got off a friend. The motherboard wifi/wifi card/antenna thing doesn't work. I'll probably get some more RAM (DDR3) for it and maybe upgrade to a haswell i7, but I wanted to see what anons think. I haven't touched the thing in years because I don't really have space for a desktop to be (it's a full sized ATX build.)

How does PTM work in the "turns to liquid when hot"? Wouldn't that mean it would pump out very easy or any sections which are spilling out over a component would be a bad thing? Clearly it doesn't seem to have a negative effect so what is actually meant by its phase change? Is it very quickly shifting in between liquid and solid so that this isn't truly a problem? But then how does it perform its function which is apparently to be a very high quality and evenness TIM?
>>
>>108107111
yeah it's a b550 tomahawk, I have the same motherboard and the same cpu as that guy and I also have a 9070xt but sadly not the xfx one

poor college student. Not looking to take out a loan for a machine capable of basic bitch gaming and school work. This is an HTPC from a friend's dad. He upgraded the GTX 1050 Ti that was in there to an RTX 5050, found out it's louder. He also added the WD Black laptop hard drives and complains they're "loud when seeking data". I don't care about any of that. He asking $500 and I know I can talk him down to like $480 if not less. I'm basically buying an RTX 5050 at MSRP with an attached Intel 10th gen build. The case has an included SFX 450w PSU

It's a working PC with a "gaming GPU" that I'm going to get for $500 or less. As is I can hardly find a build with roughly these specs that doesn't start at $750. If it still had the 1050Ti I wouldn't even glance at it. I'm just trying to play Overwatch, Apex Legends, similar kind of games when i'm not doing school work. I know I'll be using all the Nvidia DLSS, frame gen and other such wizardry to get 100+ fps, but that's fine to me.

>chinkshit software?
Worse, or better depending on your perspective, it has no software at all. It uses a generic “smart battery” HID interface that Windows treats sort of like a laptop battery. So your only options for configuration are the Windows power plan settings. The good news is that model has a Coulomb counter that counts the electrons as they get used, so it can accurately tell Windows how much battery percentage is left (instead of the shittier lithium units that just guess based on a curve).

If you're tech savvy you can set up a Network UPS Tools (NUT) server locally to get things running with a bit more granularity compared to the windows power plan options, but they're a budget brand for UPS's and they only really expose a handful of variables in the driver, it'll tell you if it's on AC power (Online/OL), if it's on battery (On Battery/OB), and then the current battery charge level (0-100%). Once it does go from OL (on wall power) to OB (using the battery) it also exposes a final variable battery runtime, which is calculated in real time by the UPS itself using the coulomb counter mentioned earlier. So the time remaining counter is a very accurate counter, not just a guess of when the battery MIGHT die.
>>
>>108107192
>>108107259
did you run DDU to entirely remove all your old GPU drivers before installing the new ones? AMD is known for being pissy about new drivers if there's any existing files from the prior GPU.

>>108107182
>but they don't give you the option to buy one with the mesh side? are they retarded?
The mesh side is counter productive to air circulation. If anything they need a solid side panel, maybe with even more intakes on the side panel. The idea being positive pressure at the front and nowhere to go but out the back. Ideally it should function like a sort of wind tunnel that grabs air around the components and forces it out the back. If you have a mesh side panel it gives the option for new fresh air to escape before it has a chance to replace old heated air around components.

In other words. Glass panel good, solid aluminum panel better, leaky mesh panel bad.

5070 ti is not great value at msrp + 50%
intel cpu is fine if the focus isnt gaming, otherwise x3d cpus are better
id rec 2tb nvme but they're seemingly overpriced vs 4tb, its just a bit annoying if you have 1 big one that fails at some point
fractal case would look better and stuff like meshify 3 has top tier airflow
1k w psu is only necessary for 5090 type gpu, a 750w would be enough otherwise

monitor has its own up and downsides, its ips miniled so the native contrast is bad and OLEDs are typically cheap enough to skip minileds and youd get better motion clarity and contrast

Is it soldered in place or is it a discrete component? If its an m.2 you can probably cheaply replace it. You can also run mismatched RAM with the performance penalty, 8GB won't be enough for much. IDK what Haswells are going for these days, make sure the board will support it (maybe update BIOS) and best of luck.

do they just arbitrarily lower it to segment it or something

>>108107749
all 5070 tis are expensive, theres some model variation with larger coolers or slight difference in production quality like using phase change pads or slightly better fans. if you ever connect a smart tv type device to it you might want a model with 2 x hdmi, most have 1

4k miniled can be fine if you primarily want it for work, since oled burn in. You might then consider a second oled monitor for anime and playing cs2

Definitely switch your mobo to an AM5 and grab an X3D (7800 is still basically top of the line for gaming - you can theoretically get better with the newer ones but they're not worth the price IMO)

Depending on where you live, jewmaxing with an AM4 and 5800X3D is probably not worth it

I'm basically putting together a custom hidden desk + wall mounted screen and want to add in an easy input for the mounted monitor

Really all I need to find is a video adapter that would be HDMI in and usb-c in with just HDMI-out (I've given up on usb-a in, not likely to be an issue anyway) that I can mount into the "wall" of the setup

something like pic related but with HDMI out instead of a usb-c input if that makes sense - I don't want a switch, just something to shit out whatever the input currently is via HDMI

as I was checking If my mobo can get this, I noticed there was a fix for sk hynix ddr5 rowhammer vulnerability
https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-6202

https://comsec.ethz.ch/research/dram/phoenix/
I'm more worried about the fix than the vulnerability

>How can I protect myself against the Phoenix attack?
>As a mitigation for existing DRAM modules, we verified that tripling the refresh rate (tREFI ≈ 1.3 us) stops Phoenix from triggering bit flips on our test systems. Running SPEC CPU2017, we have measured that this mitigation incurs an overhead of 8.4%. For future devices, more principled mitigations are required to stop Rowhammer completely.
>>
>>108108514
Well, most anything is possible. I did one with a Minisform BD790i X3D which had the 7945HX3D SoC which is a laptop unit (55w vs the 9700x at 65w) with a 2.5 slot 5070 and a 750w SFX PSU. You would be limited by cooler height in such a small chassis. But the T9 was solid little ITX case, fully vented on all 3 sides but not the front.

Yes, that was actually used like 10+ years ago on the first 4k 60Hz monitors, because a single cable couldn't carry the signal at the time. IIRC the way they worked was that the monitor pretended to be 2 screens side by side (each one would be half of the real screen). There was some support on the driver side as well so it worked seamlessly in theory. I never owned one but I think it wasn't quite as seamless as it should've been.

These monitors were never super common as far as I remember, just the very earliest 4k 60Hz screens on the market and they were pretty quickly replaced by screens with newer HDMI / DP standards that could carry the signal over a single cable. I don't think this technique has been used since, at least not in the consumer space.

>>108107379
Not sure of a single device which does all that. You can find HDMI switchers and you should be able to find USB-C (DP alt mode) to HDMI converters as well, so you can just plug one of those into a regular HDMI switch. USB-A is going to be more difficult. USB-A doesn't carry any sort of video signal by the spec, no such standard exists.

I think I've seen very basic video adapters which work over USB though, this would be something like a really shitty video card that connects over USB to the host and outputs HDMI video. The host would need to have an appropriate driver for it, I've never used such a thing to know about compatibility but I've seen them around, so they do exist.
>>

FUCKING FINALLY, THAT TOOK FOREVER OH MY GOD. I should have never tried disassembling this card, because now my thermal pads are all fucked up and I have none to replace them with. I should have just slapped on the original heatsink and been done with it.

So it was the fucking thermal pads or paste keeping the heatsink stuckafter all, my twisting and flexing was pointless.

I still got that tip of the screw stuck in one of the standoffs, so my wrenching was pointless anyway and I don't even know if it can be removed. Fuck.

Dry mass of this 980 Ti heatsink is around 0.5-0.53kg, this card has only 0.36kg of metal and no vapor chamber at that, only aluminum and three copper heatpipes with the loudest fans you'll ever hear. Worse density too. Be careful of buying 3-fan cards as opposed to better dual-fan cards near MSRP if you can help it. This is a 200W vs 250W GPU priced almost identically in their respective time periods.

>>108111353
Too bad the three on the side there curled up under the mounting pressure of the heatpipes so it only half-cooled the memory, but other than that they still seemed real good. No memory temperature sensors though from what I remember though I got a good stable OC.

Next gen PC's are going to come out in 2027 with DDR6 and new sockets, and GPU's with more vram, and with better future upgrade options (for a higher price).
So, you have every reason to wait if you don't have an immediate need for a high spec gaming PC. And prices should get lower as supply gets corrected to match demand (but next gen PC's will be very expensive, but on the bright side, if the prices never get corrected, it's possible that next gen PC's end up not costing much more than current gen PC's).
It would help if you could tell us what games you plan on playing, or what your current PC is like.
Also an xbox or switch 2 would save you a lot of money if you don't pirate video games. Since usually our PC master race copium is usually we play indie games and emulators and pirate stuff to offset the fact we spend more than 2x more for the same level of power as a console (but xbox did increase the cost of game pass I heard).

Every GPU with a heatsink heavier than 200g should come with a metal backplate and a metal bracket to stiffen the PCB against sagging, this is really unacceptable for $400 and up GPUs. If your GPU doesn't have metal plates, that doesn't bode well for the build quality.

The current timeline for the seller he will likely use as his proof:

red gpu will actually complete a counter strike 2 or dota 2 competitive match on windows & linux.

green gpu will crash midway doesn't matter the OS.

I wouldn't say so because my 3080 is still running games like butter. But I need something to survive till 2028. I might just go with a used 4080 if I can find one cheap.

How big of a difference is the 4080 and super?

Well, yeah, I guess it isn't anymore unfortunately. I upgraded when the 7950X3D came out so it was back then. Had a look at price of my memory kit and it had gone up to 3-4x more than what I paid.

>but you're probably doing something wrong, just saying
Nothing is wrong. I went through the whole process of testing the system and comparing numbers I was getting to benchmarks online when I built it and nothing was off in any test. I even "benchmarked" Factorio with some downloaded maps from FactorioBox and nothing was out of the ordinary, if anything I was getting better than average results.

I'm guessing you don't actually play the game. The results on FactorioBox are highly unreliable, people have fucked up systems and numbers are all over the place on the same map and same CPU models. In addition to that, at least last I checked (which was years ago, to be fair), a lot of the benchmark maps were basically "toy" maps somebody made in the map editor. Perfectly placed, effectively infinite resource patches right where they needed them to optimize for direct insertion, a lot fewer resources moving around and a lot less logistics than you see in a normal playthrough. This doesn't load the game systems in the same way a real map does. "Benchmark" maps that barely use any trains, belts or bots are not going to be representative of how the game actually runs in the real world when you play normally.

I also remember some reviewers being ignorant retards and also doing things like running the game on the wrong CCD, failing to notice this and not reporting on it, or providing corrected results. They also don't play the game and don't actually know how it's supposed to work.

The only other reason for any differences would be differences in SA. Most specifically I've read that space platforms are perf hogs, maybe those in particular don't scale with cache. I haven't built a base large enough in SA to test it myself.

insert in at a 30 degree angle and push down

It feels like you are just not seating it fully.
If you GENTLY push with a bit of wiggle when it's about 30 degrees away from flat, does it really not go in further?

no i haven't played it for years
not my type of autism desu

Then as a tip, if you want anything resembling realistic results you should benchmark maps people actually played normally, not some of the editor shit that's popular for this purpose.

give me an example of that then
if you want, doesn't really matter
i don't really see the problem with "synthetic" maps, it's the same game logic either way

>>108112701
It's the same game logic but if you don't build the things then the logic for those doesn't run. Like if you don't build trains, the train logic isn't used. I've seen maps people benchmark where they have infinite resource patches placed all over the map. Then they cheat in some insanely high mining productivity research and build their factories by doing shit like having a miner direct insert into a furnace, which then directly inserts into the building needing the plate. This is extremely efficient for UPS and it's why people build these maps, but it's not plausible to play this way on a real map because the resources simply do not spawn in a way which allows it.

On a real map with normal settings (or some other default preset, train world or whatever) your resource patches run out. They're placed in maybe inconvenient places. You have to build and run things strictly for logistics to get your resources. You have to build a rail network or something else which allows you to easily replace patches as they run out and so on. You can't just have iron ore on the ground right next to every building in the game which needs iron plate, and so on.

On real megabases that people actually play from a generated map you'll see the things I mentioned, big train networks with lots of trains and stations, many resource patches in use, defenses or effort put in to keep the biters away and so on. Of course effort is still made to be UPS efficient, but a generated map doesn't allow you to make use of them to the same degree as something you come up with in the map editor.

Is that standoff pressed in? if i were you desu i build an adapter for the 980ti cooler, that thing looks girthy.
alternatively you drill the standoff out and use a longer screw + nut, or one size up and thread the cold plate
