For those of you working in IT, did you work at helpdesk before that and if you did how long did you stay there and what was your transition like?
>>108152570Transitioning was a deeply affirming and positive experience. I was met with respect, openness, and genuine support from colleagues and leadership alike. Conversations were thoughtful, policies were inclusive, and small everyday gestures like using my correct name and pronouns meant the world to me. Over time, I felt more confident, authentic, and engaged with work, that I was able to get promoted to IT Director. The experience strengthened my trust in my team and allowed me to thrive both personally and professionally.

>>1081526262 years. Yes.
>>108152570I have a masters which allowed me to skip all the runt work
>>108152570My first IT job was an incredibly low-paying but highly educational and enjoyable internship as the sole IT support for a small office of ~20 people at a non-profit. Pay was shit but I think it was worth it. That was just a summer internshipThe next/last year of uni I got an internship out of state (in person, this was before covid) and worked as a junior network engineer. After college they hired me full time and that lasted about 2 years but depression and living circumstances drove me to quit and move back to my home state.I wound up getting a "network engineering" job for a massive company a month before covid hit, but i wasnt actually doing any "network engineering", all they wanted me to do was traverse their clusterfuck of a network with cdp neighbor and document things like the mess of nested switches and what was connected to each, what their ips for this giant security migration project (which i led as well). Day two of the job i said "fuck this" and got into automation and ive been programming ever since (6 years now, the former employer i mentioned was the first 5)
Are you guys doing any future Investments? All I do nowadays is working on my health, physique, and lookmaxxing so I can become the trophy husband of a SEAmonkey.

i watched yet another video of some guy going "holy shit AI is now finally coding really well, something is about to happen (tm), i made myself a whole website with 1 click" and i still didn't feel impressed by it. i still view it as just an efficiency tool that you have to micromanage.i've realized that students, managerial types and other non-technical people think AI is the bees knees because they lack the experience to know that the first 50% of a project is typically super easy and fast to do, then the next 25% takes twice as long as that, and then the remaining 25% takes fucking forever due to bugs, oversights, constant rewrites, optimizations, changing scope, coupling issues, critical architecture roadblocks and so on. so even if AI gets you 75% of the way to a full project, you now have to contend with the remaining 25%, except it's going to be be even gayer because an AI wrote the first 75%
>>108153819>>108153826How much do you think you need?
>>108154114The number changes in my mind depending on how much I can tolerate work. 1.25 million would give me 50K a year forever which seems fine. 2.5 million would be the instant yes I am done number.

>>108154356i think AI code cannot really get past that final, brutal threshold because at a certain point in the project the question isn't how do you program something, it's what you should program, or whether you should even bother, and if anything, how do you get away with removing existing code. this divine providence is hard to get from a machine because the machine does not know your exact use case, neither does your client. it has to come from a single, retarded programmer, (you). and ultimately any dataset the programming uses will have been contaminated by bad programmers (because all programmers are retarded, at least at times) so you're kinda just rolling the dice whether you retardify your project every time you ask the AI how to improve iti think vibe coding will bite out a lions share in terms of early prototyping, "cute" type startups, etc. ideas for sure but i am skeptical about it doing more than that

>>108152570>For those of you working in IT, did you work at helpdesk before that and if you did how long did you stay there and what was your transition like? No. I skipped the whole Helpdesk thing by sheer luck. Back in 2018 I applied and got a job as a tier 2 admin because I interviewed well and the boss said I had a good mentality or some shit. I stayed for five years, by which point my mentor had left, others were leaving, and we had gotten some indian motherfucker as our boss. I was lucky when I got out. He was racist towards westerners, and would hire the most incompetent out of the talent pool just becuase they believed in Allah or spoke his duduk language.Anyway, I moved laterally to another place which is pretty much run exclusively by white people, so same tier 2 but with more responsibility with a 45K+ increase in pay. I believe I was hired becuase I got a masters degree. They hire a few token minorities here, but they're professional and decent, we have low turnover and lots of lifers. I often debate leaving for a change of scenery, but then I realize that this may be one of the only companies not actively laying people off. We're in a hiring surplus right now.>>108154913One day, your company's HR department or the execs will make the doughy-eyed decision to hire an Indian in upper management/CEO level. i think the only thing making me hesitant to quit and "retire" or try to freelance is the health insurance thing... it's expensive
>>108155317There are a couple ways to go about it (assuming you are American). Either withdraw low enough that you qualify for obamacare (4x the poverty rate) or get set up in Mexico/Costa Rica/Panama etc and do all of your healthcare there. Another option is to just accept the risk and if something major happens be prepared to let the debt run wild and declare bankruptcy. Fuck healthcare companies if you hand me a 500K bill Im just simply not going to pay it. Reminder that IRAs/401Ks and your house are protected in bankruptcy and cannot be taken from you.

I'm 33. No girlfriend. Never been kissed. Dropped out of high school. Zero certifications to my name. I've been rotting away at an IT help desk for 7 years and I hate every single second of it. There are mornings when I can barely get out of bed because I know it's just going to be another day of the same meaningless tasks, the same condescending users, the same feeling that I'm wasting my life. I watch people I went to school with buying houses, getting married, moving up in their careers, and here I am still living in the same apartment doing the same job I started when I was 26. Sometimes I genuinely hate my life. I hate that I made so many wrong choices. I hate that I feel stuck with no way out. I hate looking at myself in the mirror and seeing someone who gave up a long time ago.But then I come home to Chip. My little Yorkie doesn't care about any of that. He's always so happy to see me, tail wagging, jumping around like I'm the most important person in the world. In those moments with him, I remember there's still something good. And somehow, I'm still willing to learn. Still willing to try. I don't know how or when things will change, but I have to believe they can.

Tech workers are really arrogant pieces of shit
>>108156165The answer is now, anon. What the fuck are you waiting for? Perfection will never come, you have to make your own way with what you have. Have you tried not being overwhelmed? Make an actual plan to get out of your hole. You can be doing something completely different in six months if you actually made an effort to study. It's not like you even have to pay, either, except for the cert. You can literally pirate all IT textbooks easily.>>108156495That's not your problem. If those people got a better job offer, they'd leave in a heartbeat. Nobody who is smart is loyal to a company or their coworkers anymore. You're not there to make friends, you are there to do work and make money. Once you get over that facade of camaraderie and family/culture corporations try to cultivate and realize everything there is transactional, it makes the whole experience less problematic. Go in, do your job, don't get emotionally invested, and if shit goes south, find another job.>>108155406Make alternatives that are superior, more reliable, and integrate with the existing infrastructure to enable an easy transition off.>>108155646Honestly I'd like to see more people just refuse to pay. Healthcare companies can eat my ass. They are nothing more than scams designed to keep people sick. Every mission statement on their websites are fucking lies.
>>108157811>That's not your problem. If those people got a better job offer, they'd leave in a heartbeat.Well, the one guy who would be left is older, probably 50s. He's a nice guy with a family and everything, so I feel bad leaving him behind on a sinking ship he probably won't be able to get off of. And to be clear: I'm not going to another company; I'm just quitting because I hate this job so much. Easily the worst one I've had in my career, which is almost 20 years now. Imagine he got pulled into the boss's office one day and they had some evidence of a mistake you committed, or they wanted you gone and they wanted some evidence or some shit, and they threatened him and his job if he didn't trump up something to get you cut off the line. Basically, made him choose between you or his job. 99.9 percent of people will choose their own skin over you, doubly or triply so if they have a spouse and kids. Don't waste a single one.>>108158388Yeah, maybe so, but it's better than no income. 50K can net you passive living in a lot of rural areas, and if you want to live in a city it means you can work stupid no-brainer jobs, or work a regular job without losing sleep because you have to have income coming in. As long as you are not a retard and you avoid lifestyle creep you can pay minimum bills like mortgage, bills, car/student loans easily and just stock shelves or flip burgers and quit when the manger becomes a retard.

You would need to have an asset base, so already have car and get a fixer upper house, but it CAN be done. Also, some farming on one's property is never a bad thing. Have you ever had a fresh tomato from the garden? >>108158948Music producing won't net you much these days unless you get gigs and that's work and stress. I'm on discord channels for people in the Vaporwave scene, and saw some of the best artists griping about how they are only making only a few grand off their albums, and these are people making it in an established genre. It is ALL merch, and to distribute merch you need to have a fanbase that's devoted enough to pay. You're basically building a brand and an identity, and the music is secondary to it.
It all seems so simple until it isn't. Go in with a plan, scope creep happens. Get overwhelmed. Get bitched at on the phone first thing in the morning before you can even have your coffee. I never wanted to be in this industry in the first place because I knew it would turn into this. On one hand I have these people paying me to play with things I always wanted to get my hands on and build things I find very interesting. On the other turning my hobbies and interests into a job has made me like them a lot less. Working as a cashier in a grocery store then coming home to dick around on my computer was a lot more fulfilling.
You have no idea how much worse it is to be a grocery store worker than an office worker
>>108159182I can make a few grand pitching down 80s funk and Japanese pop songs then adding reverb? Fuck man I'm in the wrong line of work.
>>108159182Is Vaporwave really considered all that commercial? Anyway, I don't mind making main stage slop. I kind of like main stage slop.>>108159319I do. Stocking shelves at the grocery store was less stressful. The store wouldn't loose a $200m customer if I dropped some eggs.
>>108159319It's physically draining but not mentally draining. I had to both scan and bag groceries. It becomes like a puzzle game. Getting the things off the conveyor belt quickly and into bags without making them too heavy. Being sure to double bag things like glass bottles. Memorizing all the codes for produce and being able to simply punch them without looking them up. The managers with long term experience taught me how to quickly clear up problems. You can follow the procedure the proper way, holding up your lane for 10 minutes plus to do a price check, frustrating waiting customers. Or you can ring something up for a made up price and move them along. That becomes the strategy for dealing with obnoxious customers too. Just give them what they want and push them out the door.I did this shit for like a year. I'd be fine doing it for my whole life if it was actually a viable career. But in my free time I was learning the valuable skills that would lead me to a real career.
>>108159372Customer service has constant conflicts and social interaction, it's very emotionally draining. It's highly unpredictable, you often work with people who can't get any other job, and customers are assholes with a real emotional impact. It's also very visible and measurable work, time to lean time to clean. Office jobs require sustained cognitive focus, but at least it's a quiet environment full of professionals and you won't get shit for slacking off a bit because the work is more opaque.
retail is for extrovertsyou think these /g/ motherfuckers can handle that kind of constant emotional regulation?
>>108159426I am an introverted autist. The conflicts and social interaction mentally destroyed me at first. I remember one time I cried like a little bitch on one of my breaks. It's just so repetitive and routine though. Most of the people I hear complaining about it seem like extroverted normies to me which is weird don't you think? At some point it stops being "I'm doing the scary socializing!" and becomes just another day, fuck it. Conflicts stop causing you fear and frustration. They instead become welcome interruptions from the mundane and a chance to prove your worth.
Fucking this >>108159319The retards in this general obviously have never worked a single day in their lives outside an office or outside tech.I worked summer jobs and other shit since I was 6 or so.Having to serve people fucking SUCKS. People get mad at you for random bullshit that might not even have nothing to do with you or with the business itself. They might be having a bad day and want to unload that shit, and they do so by calling you names and shit simply because they can and you are a wage slave, so what can you do about it? Nothing.People will steal shit, or try to bribe you into paying less, or whatever. Most tech workers, and graduates in general, truly have no idea how things work in the real world. People are shit, and they will treat you like shit.
>>108159607Maybe people where you're from just suck. I encountered shitty people but not that frequently. Also the company that ran the store I worked at gave us tools for managing customer disappointment. Like being able to adjust the price of any item within $5. If someone came to my lane bitching up a storm I'm not going to get personally offended. I'm going to try to make them leave feeling like we gave a shit about them. The company I worked for understands that these things are important because the people that go in to the store could be going into Wal-Mart instead for the "low prices" meme. But if you've ever been in one of their stores you know how much of a bleak atmosphere they have. Even if they remodel the stores and make the lighting less oppressive than the 90s all the wagies that work there look like they've been rode hard and put away wet and the customers are the dregs of society. That's not to say the company I worked for was perfect either. The micromanagement of wagies and obsession with optimization of wagie performance is something that I found unacceptable. A secret shopper deducting points from my performance review if I don't smile at them? Lmao fuck that shit 1000 times over.

At some point I was so bored I was spending half the day chatting up Stacies in the canteen because there was nothing to do. Then a manager arranged a meeting but didn't say why and I was like "oh shit they're onto me" but all she did was say how happy she was with my performance. I need some career advice. I live and work in italy, for context.Right now I'm working at a semi-government job in "cybersec" which I put in quotes because it's actually just forwarding emails. No growth opportunities, no skill acquisition, shit pay.I'm about to get an offer from a local body rental agency for another job in cybersec, it's a SOC analyst role, I've heard they are a bad place to work for (local, not a big name) because some people have connections and do no work and everyone else has to pick up slack for them. Probably still bad pay but it might be as much as a 25% increase from my current job.Lastly I'm waiting on an offer which should be AT LEAST 25% over my current job, at a big fintech place, but as a programmer rather than cybersec.Ideally I'd pivot to the dev role just for the work environment, but I'm worried about leaving cybersecurity in a landscape where devs are getting replaced by AI. At least in compliance roles that's not possible due to gov regulations, for now.Is that a funded fear and a sound reasoning? Should I stick with the gov job and suffer the shit pay and dead career?

>>108152016>>108152005I’ve shared this story here before, but I’ll tell it again.I know a lot of Indians and people connected to India because I spent some time in international schools in the Indian subcontinent. I later met up with some of them in Dallas, since I stop by there every now and then There are so-called “consultancies” founded by incompetent retarded indians, one of whom I personally knew who used to run a gas station before COVID. These consultancies offer full services that include fake resumes, someone else to handle interviews, connections for job placements, and more. They enable people with little to no coding knowledge, some who haven’t even grasped object-oriented programming, to obtain decent white-collar jobs, sometimes even low six-figure positions, i've seen them help villagers from india get a middle seniority gov job, that perticular case blew me away honestly. Many workplaces with large numbers of Indian employees are allegedly staffed through these consultancies. Why would these consultancies do this? The answer is fucking loads of money. They maintain leverage over the individuals because fraud has been committed on their behalf and they set them up with a upper middle class lifestyle and In return, those individuals reportedly pay 20–30% of their salary for the first three years. ( or some set amount of years )The person I mentioned earlier who used to run a gas station is now a multimillionaire. How? By placing hundreds of people into jobs and passively collecting around $10,000–$20,000 per person per year. Stopped by and saw his retarded jeet kids in their million dollar ranch house, ofcourse they all go to TCU. TLDR; Indians allow cooperations to lower pay, they then pay a cut to their indian consultancies who helped them get the job, all while being untalented, unskilled, ambitious in cooperate politics while having no such ambitions for the art of coding. I'd rather take a fresh grad with no project

I mentioned I'm in a constant state of fight or flight but after the greater part of 29 years I've gotten pretty used to it all and have learned how to channel it into productive thoughts. thanks anon
>>108163198Recruiter here, I have my Claude agent mass-scanning profiles. Don't get too excited, lol.
>>108167347>10kB CLAUDE.md file,you a geohot reader?https://geohot.github.io/blog/jekyll/update/2026/02/15/tiny-corp-product.html

>>108167975Hasn’t he been in ai for like his entire life?
>>108168020No? Before LLMs, he was selling his car assistance thing, and before that, he WS using other people's exploits to hack consoles
>>108168042What was the car assistance thing made of? Ding dong

>>108164090keep asking questions. i'm about to get laid off after 2 months because i didn't ask enough questions. shit sucks
guys I'm seriously depressed, being marginalised by my entire team pretty much, treated like I'm a worthless sack of shit that can't be taught anything. I believe the main reason for this is due to my lack of socialisation rather than actual intellect or skill since they seemed pretty chatty with another guy on the team who's a total retard.
About to pull a 36 hour shift at the repair station pray for me boys
>>108168419>I believe the main reason for this is due to my lack of socialisation rather than actual intellect or skillIf you're going to be an antisocial dick it's better not to actually be full of your own shit, anon.
>>108168558wdym?I'm not really antisocial, more asocial, kinda like a schizoid but also I never act grandiose, if anything I do the opposite and constantly humble myself for the sake of others, but I'm tired of it.
>>108166530Yeah and ofc it had pension, learning benefits, free public transport etc on top of it. I guess I was stupid to trade it in for something a lot worse. Next job will be an easy dashboarding / analytics job, not data engineering with 10 different programs opened at once and ticket requests that nobody understands.
>>108152005Silly question but do you think it matters what your background is in teams cam?I live in what you would basically consider an attic with wooden everything.
>>108168926Idk but I mean you can just change it anyways. I never even turn my camera on lol.

How to get an easy remote job? Doesnt have to pay that well.I already have a remote job that doesnt pay well at all and its a lot of work. From what i gather jobs at bigger companies include less work? Is that true?
>>108169974here we call that working for the government, but there is a salary cap slightly over the 6 figure mark, but you could work for gov as a contractor to overcome that but obvs would be expected to do more work.
