On a whim I decided to look for listings for X230s. I already have one I got for cheap a few years back, I was just curious. Looks like they've gotten pretty expensive recently (at least, compared to the average price I'd see back when I was in the market for one), and there aren't any lots to take parts from and repair to then take one and sell the rest to to make your money back.

T-series are more or less the same. Older X-series have always been relatively expensive.

It's gonna suck if/when my X230 ever dies. Even with coreboot/libreboot compatibility, the T480 just isn't the same.

Anyone have any advice for fixing the bezels on thinkpads? I have a T520 that has a crack in the bezel at the hinge and really don't want it to get worse.
>>
>>108226457
i'm sure you can find replacement parts online. barring that, look for a dead unit with an intact chassis and harvest those bits
>>
>>108225645
>>108225677
those things sure look nice but is there any real use case for x230s these days? at least with the t480, its quad core is still fast enough for web
>>
>>108226457
Epoxy probably, but is it really just the bezel and not the hinge mount breaking off the cover?

>>108226992
I still use my dual-core X270 for web browsing and there's also quad-core modded boards for the X230

How is the T14 gen 1 thought of? I found an AMD model (R7 4750U, 16+512) for a bit more than 495 models (if you throw in having 512gb over 256 then it becomes the same). It is (a bit under) double the price of T480, but a lot of those come as 8+256, and the cpu is more than twice as fast, so going by numbers alone, it seems I'd get more power/ram/storage for the money.

>>
>>108225161
guess i can ask here

i have a t420 and the ram is giving me problems. at least 1 of the module gives me errors with memtest85 on a single specific address

thet pc still works fine btw, it's just that sometimes random bits are getting corrupted here and there, so eventually it's gonna implode but whatever

my question is: should i bother with pressured air on the ram stick or alcoholing the stick's attachment thingy or just throw away the ram?

Depends on the exact model, I think. Most have at least one SODIMM slot as long as they aren't the slim models notified by "s" (as in T14s, as opposed to T14), the PXXs models being the exception. But do your research on the exact models available for you.
>>
>>108227917
is it hard to pick ram to work in dual channel along soldered one though? that's why I was confused
>>
>>108227953
It always runs in dual channel when the slot is filled. It's good to use a SODIMM with the same speed as the onboard chips or higher so it doesn't downclock.

I used to rock a T480 but it was in really bad shape. Like falling apart, held together with hot glue. I decided to get a T470 for $60 on ebay because of the part sharing it has with the T480. I was able to keep my ram, NVMe, Batteries.
I love this thing. The keyboard is so much nicer then my old one. I don't notice any performance difference despite it being gen 6. I know shills online won't shutup about the T480, but the T470 is often overlooked and I hope that continues.
>>
I got a t42 for parts that works but has artifacting in the de. Not sure if it's a driver or the ati Gpu is kill, but it has the 1400x1050 panel.
Is it possible to swap this panel into my T23? They had an optional panel of the same resolution
>>
>>108228186
I use a T470 keyboard in my T480 just for the more pleasant green and orange lights, also keep the T470 it came from as a backup

Definitely possible. I once swapped a T42 screen into a T60. I think screen swaps were more forgiving back in those days.
>>
any idea how to fix the trackpoint buttons of my x220 not working?
>>
>>108227953
Once you decide on a model, just look up the speed and timings, and buy a module to match. I'm sure you can get by with matching speed but if you really want to ensure congruence find one with the same timings.

>>108227621
I'm not sure if the option exists on windows but on Linux there is an option to tell the kernel to not use certain physical memory addresses. If you're too lazy to RMA the RAMs (most likely they do have lifetime guarantee) you could use that to keep your machine working without worrying too much.
>>
>>108232461
The only difficult thing to make on a ddr3 memory module are the DRAM chips and ddr3 DRAMs are still being produced for embedded and cheapskate industrial applications and whatnot. When you have the DRAM chips and its supporting components, assembly is so easy you can do it at home with some flux paste and a hair dryer, or a carefully balanced clothes iron.

I also found a P15 g1 (i7 10750h, 32gb ram, quadro gpu) for $510, seller says it can be negotiated a bit. Is it a good price? Are there any reliability concerns? Reliability is a big concern because I have a legion 5 from 2021 which gets random shutdowns when NOT under load, tried to hard to fix it myself, I cracked and it's now at a shop to get looked at. If it needs a new motherboard, it's more expensive than its value.
>>
>>108243758
>I have a legion 5 from 2021 which gets random shutdowns when NOT under load
probably just a RAM issue I'd say. I have a MSI laptop at home I got an upgraded 32GB kit for and after putting the RAM in it kept randomly shutting down, put back the original RAM in it and it's working fine again. I put the 32GB kit in one of my Thinkpads instead and it's also working fine so it was probably just a compatibility issue

I won't accuse that particular poster of lying because there's the occasional smoking deal out there, and eGay really is a skillz issue for a lot of people, but it's rarely that straightforward if you look at the specs and condition of *actually sold* units.

There's always an dick-measuring incentive to under-play what you paid for a fully functional and working unit. People will say they paid $60, but it was actually $65, plus 8% sales tax, plus $20 shipping, plus a new $25 battery since the one it came with was clapped out, plus an SSD because it didn't come with one or came with some 128GB MSATA atrocity, plus a $40 ram kit because it came with a paltry 4GB.

...you get what I mean.

The market went haywire. Covid supply issues, then the economy is fucked due to inflation. Jews are building their security state panopticon and buying up chips they may never use. Everybody is poorer and the demand for old shit is higher, for those that aren't debtmaxxing.
>>
>>108225677
The most expensive "for-parts" one I paid any mind to was an i7 variant for ~$70. I should've bought it one the spot desu.

There used to be a lot of (relatively) cheap for-parts auctions--most just needed a new battery or storage device--but there haven't been any lately. It's mostly just refurbished and librebooted listings, which is retarded to buy one since you have to flash it yourself to update it eventually or change anything--maybe you want to use a UEFI payload, or just have the kernel as the payload; maybe you want to set up full-disk encryption, or even just change the GRUB splash screen.

I'm actually curious how well of a job vendors who sell librebooted ThinkPads do. I feel like they do the bare minimum and just flash it without doing any actual configuration; they don't even compile a ROM, they just download a pre-compiled ROM. Some boards actually benefit from certain configurations within the build system.

I can understand, in some part, vendors doing "the bare minimum" to set up a librebooted system, with the assumption that the buyer will then set up the rest of the system themselves.
>>108248291
>tech just doesn't drop in price with time as much it did years ago
With older ThinkPads, part of it is no doubt normalfags being sold on the brand meme or the libreboot meme, and inflating the value of them. To me, libreboot/coreboot is really only good for having an up-to-date BIOS/UEFI, and having a choice of payloads. Whoever thinks a librebooted ThinkPad is a hard counter to glowniggery is painfully dull, and I hope they get party vanned.

If you have a drawer full of spare parts like >>108228186 did or don't mind factoring in one or two new things into your total cost (that is hopefully below what you'd pay for a unit that is already specced that way), yeah. Buying a stripped model and essentially refurbing it yourself can be fun and sometimes cost-effective. Even if you break even with a unit that's already specced that way, you got to pick your own parts and your hobby kind of paid for itself. That's old /tpg/ energy.

its a pretty good laptop, my dads work were throwing a bunch out, he got a couple and gave me one, they both had passwords on the bios so i couldnt change a bunch of the settings and a bunch of stuff had been disabled.

i picked up a ch314a and patched the bios to unlock it, installed win11 and it works great even with its dual core and 8gb of ram, will even game tho not too demanding.

Sometimes after wake up my physical mouse buttons stop working but both trackpoint and touchpad pointing still works. Re-enabling either in device manager does nothing. Is my (non-user-removable) keyboard physically fucked?

Oh, it might be software after all.
Weird that pointing works.

Both you're looking at share the same screens.
Try getting one with the 4k IPS or OLED screen for better colors.
If you can snipe a P15 Gen 2 however go with that one since even the 1080p screen on it claim 100% sRGB (I have the 100% sRGB screen optio on a T14 Gen 5 and it looks very nice)

A clit is basically just as small penis, why would it disgust you?

cause it's gross and attached to an even grosser vagina.

Best thinkpad model choice for $150 on eBay in the USA? I almost got a gen 6 x1 carbon for 140 but the listing ended.

T480s is as well-built as X1C6 and has the advantages of a RAM slot and a replaceable keyboard. You might also find lower specced T495 or T14G1A which could be worth the downgrade in sturdiness if you need better graphics.
>>
are t14 keyboards good?
>>
>>108262974
It's fine.
The older keyboards feel better but they're not as bad as other laptops.
>>
>>108262974
T14 G1-G2 are the same as you'd expect from older models like T460s-T490(s) or X1 Carbon before 7th gen. A far cry from T430 and earlier, definitely doesn't feel like a desktop keyboard anymore, but still pretty comfortable.
T14 G3+ are noticeably shallower and at least the two that I've used (might depend on manufacturer) were flexy around the nipple and near the edges.

IdeaPads are "consumer" hardware. They're not built as well as "business" class machines. The cooling is worse, component failure is more frequent, hinges and keyboards don't stand up to as much abuse, and parts are harder to source. Weirdly, they do often have nice screens and higher specced GPUs.

The calculus of /tpg/ favors parts availability, repairability, low cost (for 3-5+ year old or significantly older hardware) and ruggedness above all. Bottom line, you can run an IdeaPad, but you need to baby it. Keep the fans dusted and clean. Open the lid slowly and carefully from the middle. Don't pick it up by the corner. Don't drop it or spill anything on it. Mind your warranty period, you might need it.

For your use case you don't need anything THAT flashy. You could get by with a used business class machine that's a few years old for the same or less money you could abuse.

thinkpads are shit and cost way too much for what they actually offer.

just purchased a used precision 5530. has been pretty comfy

oh, so that's why people like ThinkPads so much...
P is also good, right? 14s

P14s is two different models. AMD version is lighter, more plasticky, but has an easily replaceable keyboard. Intel has a mostly metal chassis and dual fans but is infected with the unified keyboard-palmrest of most other laptops. If I was to buy a ThinkPad new (if I wasn't poor) I'd probably pick one of these two or a P1, which is essentially a larger P14s Intel with better GPU options.

I'm trying to get my hands on a p14s g2 AMD refurb still.
shame it's plastic but whatever. p1 is a lot more expensz

unified keyboard palmrest?

heard that the wifi card on AMD P14s is not very good.
which one can I get from Ali to replace it? signal is SHIT in my room
or should I just use my old phone as a repeater?
>>
>>108268886
I actually prefer plastic because generally speaking it should be easier to replace parts, not get as warm and absorb impacts better without denting.
Also Lenovo's generally high build quality counters a lot of the disadvantages often associated with plastic laptops like loose hinges and a wobbly screen.
