I'm the "1080p on native 4K" anon OP from the old >>108146238 thread.

Just wanted to update and say that I finally took one of my 1080p laptops to my parents house and tested it on their midrange native 4K tv set.
Unfortunately my concerns have been confirmed. 1080p source in a midrange native 4k screen looks like shit for desktop use and web browsing. Text looks blurry as hell with the screen's 1080p -> 4K upscaling, using shitty interpolation rather than integer nearest neighbor scaling. I'm not a complete idiot and I'm used to these things. I made sure the TV was in PC mode + Just Scan mode, and tried both my high end HDMI 2.1 compliant cable, and my parents shitty Walmart/Amazon-tier no-name HDMI cable they use for their satellite receiver. Also tried different ports on the tv and made sure I tried the recommended port for PC use. It made no difference. Also messed with the TV advanced picture settings, sharpness, clarity, etc.

Now, with all that said, I have to say 1080p on native 4K really looks significantly better than a 720p or 768p source on a native 1080p screen. And I guess it's perfectly fine for video games and movies. But for desktop use and web browsing it remains vastly inferior to a native 1080p screen, and this anon >108148750 was full of shit (I've seen similar takes on the internet). The problem is that the vast majority of 4K TVs and monitors still won't do integer scaling from 1080p, not even as an option in advanced settings, and will use shitty interpolated upscaling by default instead that adds lots of blur.
Only a few high-end 4K TVs and monitors will use integer scaling. Doing interpolation in 1080p -> 4K scaling as standard might make sense in very large screens like 50-inch and larger because of PPI issues, but in 43-inch screens and smaller it's retarded.

Now I'm considering my options but I'm leaning towards getting a native 1080p screen, even with the risk of getting a shit panel. Thanks to anons that tried to help.

anon everything looks better at it's native resolution I thought this was obvious. 4k screens are standard now because they're fucking amazing, I suggest you leave 1080p behind like the rest of us, that appears to be your weakpoint.

Maybe, however the main issue specifically for 1080p -> 2160p scaling (also 720p -> 1440p scaling btw), is the kind of upscaling the vast majority of TVs and monitors use.
4K is exactly 4x more pixels than 1080p, with 2x on the horizontal and 2x on the vertical axis. This means nearest-neighbor integer scaling is possible and theoretically it can look as crisp as in a native 1080p panel of same size, or very close.
However instead of doing integer scaling, almost all TVs and monitors add some shitty and unnecessary bilinear interpolation, making the picture blurrier. Obviously you need some sort of interpolation when upscaling resolutions that don't scale to integers (such as 720p -> 1080p, 1080p -> 1440p, or 1440p -> 2160p), but not for 1080p -> 2160p. Only some very high end models use integer scaling for these resolutions (or offer it as an option in the device settings).
It's puzzling because it's something extremely simple to implement in code and features, and integer scaling is computationally cheaper than interpolation.
My only guess is that they do this shit to discourage the goyim from using TVs as PC monitors because monitors have higher profit margins.

One thing you can do is a software solution. Use:
xrandr --output DP-2 --mode 3840x2160 --rate 144 --filter nearest --scale 0.5
and the desktop and applications will run at 1080p but when it will get displayed on the monitor it will get scaled with nearest neighbor to 4k

What the fuck kind of PC does not have 4K-capable output? A Core2Duo?

All my hardware is capable of 4K anon, except my GPUs wouldn't be able to natively render most games at 4K with acceptable framerates but that's obviously the smallest of issues.
In case I go for 4K desktop and upscaling games at source, that's one of my concerns btw. I use AMD GPUs and I've heard AMD drivers often shit the bed when using integer scaling, especially when using borderless fullscreen and alt-tabbing in and out of games

It's not an issue if you use linux: >>108230322
this works on every gpu

Dunno what you are foing but did you try any of the resultions between 1080p and 4K? If not why not? I mean I have shitbox with a GT 1030 on it that does 3840 x 2160 beside a tv downstairs and is fine even on a 4K TV. That to one side, 1080p media generally looks fine on 4K TVs as does most stufff upscaled to 720. Xbox 360s look great on 4K TVs as long as they are set to 1080p, so do upscaled PS2s

I;m not sure what your trying to say. Is 4K generally worth it? NO there is fuck all media or software that takes actual advantage of it that is any good including most rips on the internet the vast majority of media was made at lower resolution. Some TVs do upscaling better than others but the one I have downstairs oin the room is a bog standard normende cheapo

it's not an issue on windoze wither, anon is tarded

Try it on 720 and see if the TVs upscaler likes that better than 1080

there is still no option to set integer scaling or nearest neighbour on wayland and no

it does not work, it displays it in upper left corner
winblows doesnt have this problem & looks way better on my tv, 1650maxq btw

wlroots compositors let you do that, you're probably using GNOME or something

Get a 30-32" 1440p monitor, there's plenty of good panels for those

Go to your GPU driver panel and disable HDMI Overscan. You are welcome.
