What kind of not-lego are you looking for?
Are you a MOC-manchild or do you need something for kids to play with? If you're the first, head over to reddit, there's plenty of subs for retarded manchildren who are too dumb for even todays lego, where the instruction are meant to be understood by lobotomized 4 year olds.
If the latter, i have ordered a bunch of random, no-brand parts and things, and they've all been somwhere between good and adequate. I've got some MouldKing and Cada Technic stuff which easily is better than lego (not only cheaper), but it also suffers from the same issues as lego: It's more display models to be put on display in a man cave and not a toy to play with and to learn about gears and stuff. There's some education sets though (lego has those too, but they're essentially lego price + 300% markup, 'cause it's for schools, fuck that) which are technic as its meant to be.
XingBao is interesting, they do a nice mix of normal lego and technic which is quite playable, but their quality (both stones and "built quality" of the final truck or so) isn't too great. Not exactly bad, but not great either.

Still plenty of stuff left that's cheaper, higher quality or simply not available "locally". But you're right, it's not as simple anymore as in ye goode olde days.
To compare to the not-lego example above: In Germany, there's bluebrixx who are doing their own sets out of chink parts, but also sometimes just straight resell Cada or XingBao, if you get stuff on sale, it might be cheaper there, so it's worth checking. But e.g. some MouldKing stores ship their stuff from EU, so that's quite the gray area.

Aliexpress is like 90% of all my purchases, but not everything works. I wouldn't buy anything that uses a battery from aliexpress. I bought an ebike and the battery died in less than a year, I also keep buying hand held vacuums and they keep dying in a few months. I have had flashlights dying on me too (I'm really into hiking at night). But for everything else ali is great. You can buy things like tray CPUs and refurbished GPUs which work great. And of course, technology apart you can buy all sort of plastic shit from them. I collect anime figurines and the ones from aliexpress cost like 3 time less than the retail ones and it's the same exact shit.

this is my experience as a European anon. CPUs, ram and older refubrished GPUs are great on Ali. Anime figurines are great, you can find them under 10€ in aliexpress when they are sold locally for 30€. Car and motorcycle accessories are also worth it. Outdoor shit is also really good in aliexpress, even if they are more expensive now, you can find thing like dirt cheap tents and other camping material which just works. Also gun related accessories are way cheaper than brand name things. You can also get plastic lifting weights for cheap.

Clothes are not worth it, Shein is better because their shit quality is also ridicously cheap. Electrodomestics aren't worth it on Ali, you can find cheaper things in physical stores and the Ali batteries are bad. And heavy shit is almost never worth it due to the increased shipping costs.

That's my experience with aliexpress, they are basically good for niche things and plastic shit.
