build is nicer than the gen 2 i use at work and honestly either of their screens aren't all that bad. the anti-glare is a welcome bonus.

strange though that it comes in 256gb only, ours came loaded with 1tb... tho i guess that's if u deal with lenovo directly. but both ssds are replaceable inside

ah but then again there's the whole ram/ssd shortage thing i forgot about which probably explains the lack of storage options... ye my co-worker's unit came with higher capacity when it was issued to him last year

Hmm, I really should've bought a T480 back when they were comparatively cheap, my X230 is starting to show its age.

I thought about buying one just as I had heard about libreboot being ported to it, but I was preoccupied elsewhere. It looks like the rise in price is due in part to the flash chip shortage. Should the RAM shortage even be heavily affecting SODIMM DDR4? I can understand DIMM RAM being more expensive as people panic-buy to substitute DDR5, but I can't imagine many panic-buying SODIMM.

There's also the consequence of everyone hyping it up.
>>
>>108395544
prices for even single 16gb ddr4 sodimms shot past $130 last i checked. definitely doesn't help that ddr4 isn't even that slow compared to ddr5 that anyone lookin to add more sticks there got fucked in the bum too

One thing that pisses my off particularly about T480 eBay listings is when they come without any RAM. Storage I can understand, but what I assume is them taking the RAM out to sell separately is coin-clipping behavior.

>>
>>108397007
just get a ch314a ng its like $15, rasp is gorillion times more work.
>>
>>108397243
I already have one, just that it's mentioned in the Libreboot documentation that it's not recommended to use it for it's lack of safeguards, even if the 5v issue has been resolved on your particular revision. It *might* not insta-rape your flash chip on a ThinkPad, but I plan on using it on other boards too.

Also, from what I've read with regards to flashing with a Pico, it's just a matter of connecting it as flash storage, and then copying a uf2 file to it and using it like you would any other SPI programmer.

I bought a Lenovo T480 with 16GB RAM, now I was looking at the Task Manager in Windows 10 and Firefox is taking 3.5 GB of RAM but it says that it's taking 49% of the total memory above, why? 3.5 GB out of 16 GB should be 21% of the total memory used, not 48%. Any idea what's going on here?

I'm quite new here
Is a t430 worth it in 2026? My current crappy acer laptop while being rather newer has horrible battery and is frequently breaking (non functional touchpad for example) I was considering a t430 because I can buy one for $199 NZD ($115 USD) which is rather cheap for a lot of these I've seen.
It has the dual core i5-3320M, 500gb HDD and 8gb RAM, is it worth it? Or should I just get my current one fixed up.
>>
>>108402350
it's good enough for basic tasks, but are there really no better models within that price range? this thing still is pretty old

>>
>>108402442
I don't know enough about thinkpads to know which would be a better choice. Most of the thinkpads I stumble across are really expensive and I don't have much money
Looking through the lowest buy now options all the cheaper ones are either broken in some way or they're crappier than the t430, but I don't know enough to make a proper decision.
I looked up t480 and they're all around $600-700 NZD and the only working t450 is $449 NZD
I don't want to buy from places like Ebay because then I have to pay hundreds of dollars in shipping fees a lot of the time.
>>
>>108402709
huh well shit. for one anything newer than 2011-2012 would serve u better, but those prices sure are hard to deal with. if the acer’s significantly newer i feel you’d be better off just swapping out the faulty parts if you’re able, genuine cells for t430s are already long gone at this point
>>
>>108391159
any reason to not get an x280? seeing them like 200 dollars on ebay. If not that one which would be better thats as thin?
>>
>>108403132
>No room for a SATA drive
>Soldered RAM only up to 16GB; if it fails, you're fucked
Those are the only points I can think of. First might not be an issue for you, and I don't know how much of a real concern RAM failing is.

I was actually looking to buy one too, but a T480 looks more appealing for the fact it addresses the above concerns--though I certainly prefer the X280's smaller form factor. Maybe I'm just making an issue out of nothing; maybe it's just a matter of me refusing to get with the times. Don't all modern laptops come with soldered RAM?
>>
>>108391159
Is an i7-3840QM recommended for a t430 with a default delta fan?
>>
looking at a T470 that with parts would be about 90 bucks. is that worth it for a first TP? Migrating from an Acer with garbage hinges.
>>
>>108403187
>I don't know how much of a real concern RAM failing is.
It's not. Soldered ram is actually more reliable. It's just that it's a bitch to fix and probably not worth it for something that old.

>>108403572
You're in the ballpark. It's a 7th gen Intel right? I wouldn't get one that's cucked with a 6th gen CPU - you might as well consider a T460 at that point. Unless TPs are rare/expensive where you're at.
>>
So, what will we use once the T480 dies?
>>
>>108403926
>It's not. Soldered ram is actually more reliable
Roly? Hmm, I guess in that case I could just buy a lot of them in the off chance one of them fails. 16GB maximum is still a shame, especially so considering a small form factor is nice. I guess I can make do and do everything else on my desktop.

Has anyone tried Kingsener batteries for the X280/T480? How long have you used them, and how are they holding up?
>>108404057
Me personally, I only really upgrade whenever coreboot/libreboot has a port to a new board that's a big improvement over what I have at the time. xx80 might be the most modern board supported for a while. Hope neither project dies in the future as a result of hard-coded spyware bullshit.
>>
>>108404057
will probably just buy my e16 off my office if that ever happens
>>
>>108402767
The acer laptop is a travelmate-p23 of some sort, forgot to add earlier.
I figure I could probably just get the parts replaced again. this is the second time I'll have to get it fixed, first time the thing just wouldn't fucking turn on half the time which pissed me off (and the battery was screwed)
>>

>keyboard without PgUp and PgDn
That certainly stinks but I could tolerate it.

Might consider a T14 gen 7 when my old ones eventually drown in bloat. Looks like a return to form in many ways, though it still has avoidable flaws like the awful 1.5/1.35mm keyboard and soldered wifi.

I have TP 13 Gen 2, with i5-7300U and T480S. TP 13 on Sony MDR headphones sounds excellent, music, movies, YT, any media sounds better. Recently had a chance to fix and get to know Appleslop. Macbook Pro 2017 has much better speakers, but TP 13 still moggs in headphone department as I can hear notes in music works I’ve never heard before on different devices. Apple sounds very neutral, probably by design. Unfortunately, I have to upgrade, but TP 13 will be very missed and I don’t want to get inferior machine. I ditched thinkpads in 2013 when I started hating every new model after the T/X430, specifically the weird transition period where they all became 16:9 and they started dropping socketed everything while inexplicably getting thicker despite not having an ultrabay anymore.
