I keep windows floating by default and only enable tiling when I need to. I'm using Bspwm but this is pretty normal functionality across the board.

I have Snapper set up to take btrfs snapshots from the past 12h + 3days. Whenever I want to undo all the shit I just did to my root drive I usually just restore a snapshot from 1 or 2 hours ago instead of manually reversing each change because it's easy and fast. However every time I do that it seems to create a new subvolume with the name root_backup_[timestamp]. Is it safe to delete these?

Im trying to use this "secondary router" with DHCP and firewall turned off, delegated to the primary router, so the secondary router acts as a switch

This works great over ethernet, but the wifi is so trash for some reason, it hangs for seconds at a time and takes 20 seconds to load up a website that takes a fraction of a second by ethernet cable, even if im sitting in the same room with perfect wifi reception

so i looked up the telnet credentials and got into a busybox thingy
what do i poke to check what could be causing issues here?

i was having the same issue when i had OpenWrt installed on this thing, i thought it was the retarded propietary broadcom chip not working well with openwrt but it seems to still be misbehaving even with the official firmware

TLDR: Vodafone's "sercomm AD1018" router wifi is shit, hangs up the internet for several seconds at a time even with full reception. Router works great over an ethernet cable though.

To answer my own question: Yes, it is safe to delete them after restoring a snapshot. Looks like when your restore a snapper snapshot it first gets copied into a new subvolume and then restored from it, leaving behind said subvolume after rebooting. Recovered a nice chunk of disk space by deleting them.

Anyone got good guides or write ups on how to best pirate shit on Linux? I'm running CachyOS for gaming, PopOS for just general use because I love it so much. Repacks sometimes works. I add the installer as a steam app, enable Proton compatibility, it usually installs, then I run the .exe through Steam doing the same thing. I've gotten Fable 3 to launch, but can't run. I can't get Fable anniversary to run at all.

Why can I not run Counter-Strike in native full-screen like I can on Windows? I'm on CachyOS.
I've tried looking this up, most places tell me it's a Window Manager issue. Most places seem to say that switching to X11 will enable native fullscreen, but it doesn't. I have installed an set X11 as my desktop session, same issue, I can't run it native full screen. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if the things I'm reading are wrong.
Other places have told me that nvidia-settings has a setting to override windows manager for applications. It's been a minute since I read that, but I just looked again I don't see any setting like that. Maybe I'm retarded and don't see it?
Is there any negative to playing video games in Windowed Fullscreen? Is input lag or frame times effected? I really dont' know I'm retarded.

My old Fedora Thinkpad is reporting problems and not starting properly (I just get some “emergency mode” terminal) that tells me that “fsck exited with status code 4”, but scrolling through journalctl, it also says some of my RAM is broken and stuff like that. I haven’t dropped the laptop since yesterday, so I assume it must be a software problem, but the old kernel won’t boot either now.

I don't think anyone bothers maintaining anything the way you're describing. Ext4 is non-fragmenting so the issues Windows has with NTFS don't happen. Btrfs (which I think Fedora uses by default) has it's own CLI tools for checking data integrity and defragmenting it is not recommended at all.

ext4 has fragments like every other modern filesystem. It even has its own defrag program, e4defrag.

Linux used to have dramatically better block allocation than Windows before Vista. You could write the same files to an empty disk with ntfs-3g in Linux and it would look clean on a fragmentation map, switch back to Windows and the literally the same operation would look like shit. These days they're pretty similar but Windows still has scheduled defrag because so many people grew up conditioned to constantly defrag Windows. You shouldn't need to defrag either OS unless you let disks run >90% full for a long time.

I've fixed the problem! It wasn't bad RAM, but the file system had fucked up somehow. The solution was to do ``fsck /dev/mapper/fedora-root``. After saying Yes a bunch of times because I hadn't done -y in that command, everything started up as normal and I'm back online. Hurray!

Could be a couple of reasons/solutions.

If you've set up your PC to automatically log you in without asking for a password then gnome-keyring/kdewallet won't automatically unlock on boot. Which means ssh keys, wifi passwords, etc. won't be available to you assuming they're handled by gnome-keyring/kdewallet. I think recent versions of GNOME no longer use gnome-keyring for ssh keys, but I could be wrong. I haven't used passwords for ssh keys in a long time so I never needed to unlock anything.

Check if ssh-agent is running on startup. If it isn't you need to set that up. You can enable ssh-agent persistence with systemd. Try starting the service manually through systemctl, then log out and log back in and see if it's still running. Worst case scenario you'll have to write your own config file to execute something like "ExecStart=/usr/bin/ssh-agent -D -a %t/ssh-agent.socket" on startup.

Most likely thing is that you forgot to add your keys somewhere, for example in the ssh config file. Try adding this to ~/.ssh/config:

Host *
    AddKeysToAgent yes
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/your_key

This is just a quick and dirty solution to see if it works. If you only use the key for specific domains then remove the last line from the above snippet and set up the config file correctly.

I'm trying to install the guhnome 50 RC and unfortunately, I -have- to enable the testing repositories, at least extra-testing for one single fucking package that somehow is a dependency for half of them. The problem is they broke compatibility because they are changing the X11 ABI. The fix for that is to not break things.

XLibre have good reasons for what they're doing but it's not compatible with a maintenance-only "Do not break what we have" mindset. Sometimes breaking things is needed to take the project forward but that's not what all of the deployments relying on X.org want. They want stable maintenance patches that just keep things ticking along.

Just be aware that if there are reverse-dependencies you may have to build them too and re-build existing packages that depend on it.

If it's a simple library that not much depends on and doesn't have large reverse-dependencies (rebuilding all of KDE would be a nightmare, for example, the Arch devs have scripts for that!) then this will just work without headaches though.

It's not a skill issue though. Have you never encountered suspended tabs or crashed tabs, etc, before. Even if Electron is its own browser there is value in that, because it's not just the browser part but its embedded Node.js too. It can do things like re-load the app if it crashes or send a notification to notify you. Web apps don't do any of that shit because they literally can't.

I just don't see the point in using an Electron wrapper made some random person who I don't trust, when I can just run the web app in my default browser, which I do trust. Also of course if you have your default browser running, and an Electron app, then that's two web browsers eating up your RAM, instead of just one.

And yes, I agree with you that there is some trust issues with third-party apps. Microsoft used to have their own native app but they stopped developing it because they don't care if the browser is a shit experience. It's good enough for them, even better if it causes so much grief that somebody decides to go back to Windows.
