Hi, I’m mainly a Mac user for work, and I only use Windows on my gaming PC at home.

My work involves low level software analysis and reverse engineering, and recently I’ve been doing a lot more work with Windows based tools. Transferring files from my M2 Mac to a crappy Dell Latitude using an external SSD is getting really annoying and time-consuming.

So I’m looking to pick up a ThinkPad as a dedicated Windows work machine. so I’m currently deciding between a T480 and a T14 Gen 2 (Intel).

From what I’ve seen, the T14 Gen 2 has Thunderbolt 4 and newer hardware, but the T480 is cheaper and more upgradeable.

For my use case (RE, tooling, moving large files, etc.), which one would you guys recommend? Any downsides I should be aware of?

Same. I only use Windows as a gaming OS at this point.
And I rarely play games anyways

lt now? all the good thinkpad models are 13+ years old, you're only asking because you think you'll fit in with the epic hacker club by donning part of the uniform

when, in 2014? unless you're trying to play a game with spyware ass anti-cheat there's really not any games that won't run through proton or wine in current year.
ever since ~2018 WINE really started figuring their shit out, and steam being able to throw basically infinite money into proton as well, you really should never have an issue running any game at the same or even better performance as Window$
>>
>T480 is cheaper and more upgradeable
Latter point is trve, but recently, they've been listing for way more than what they're worth--certainly more than what they were selling for a few years ago, and that's before the flash chip shortage. It's a consequence of everyone shilling the T480. It's an okay machine, but if you don't care much for upgradabability or Libreboot compatibility, then you benefit from a newer model.

No, it’s just a good business laptop. It’s not about fitting in. The only good business laptops are Panasonic Toughbooks and ThinkPads. The only reason I choose a ThinkPad over a Toughbook is because it’s cheaper.
>>
>>108496064
Yeah, I know, but as I mentioned, this is for my work.
>>
>>108496054
Yeah, I think the T480 is overpriced too. However, I found one in good condition and at a cheap price. But I think I’m going to get the T14 Gen 2. It’s more powerful and still has the classic keyboard.

Poast teh specs.
>>
>>108496308
again, unless they have a cancer anti-cheat you can run it. the game itself will work the same or better than windows.
if you're playing some riot games shit where they have a kernel level (LMAOOOOOOO) anti-cheat, then no it won't run.
but games with EAC/easy anti-cheat, the devs have a check box they can click to enable linux like Lost Ark.
for anyone interested you can see which games will run on linux here

i really don’t care. Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, Battlefield 6, GTA V Online, Rust (only works on unprotected servers), and more. i don’t care if they can flip a switch to enable Linux support if i can’t play, it’s trash for online games. i’m not hating on Linux; i dual boot Windows and Fedora on my main setup, but it’s still bad for online gaming. that’s why i use Windows as my main gaming OS.
>>
>>108496499
>it’s trash for online games
works on my machine.
been on linux 4 years now and haven't had a game not work, there was a short time earlier this year where they were changing wine and the 32bit programs were fucked but just rolled back wine to previous version til they finished rolling out the new 32bit emulation.
i don't play shooters though which are obviously going to have more cheaters so i get the different level of AC for them.
>>
>>108496623
Until that issue is resolved, I will continue to play games on Windows.
>>
>>108496646
the issue of cheating in shooters will never be solved.
but more seriously, most games don't enable their AC to work on linux because they don't want to have to hire people to do support for linux and windows and mac.
easier to just block everything that isn't windows so everyone is working on same platform, other games are more understanding and will enable stuff but with a "we don't officially support linux/mac"
>>
>>108496693
No, I’m referring to the issue of multiplayer games not supporting Linux.

please do not fall for the meme. modern stinkpads are fucking garbage, and the last decent ones are becoming so antiquated that they barely even serve the purpose of being a linux autism anime watching machine anymore. i have a t14 gen 1 and it's a complete piece of shit
>>
>>108497000
And why is that? The T14 Gen 1 is a solid device.

I could ask you why you didn't use the thinkpad thread, but others have already asked you that.

Just buy a recent model.
You obviously dont care about privacy, so there is no benefit for you choosing a model with coreboot support.
>>
>>108495019
Just get a Mac. Why subject yourself to garbage battery life and ad-infested slop OS? The fastest single core performance in the world, 24 hour battery life, and a cozy polished UNIX are waiting for you anon. You don't have to use slop any longer.

I ordered the T14 Gen 2, and honestly I don’t care about Intel ME or coreboot stuff and most normal people shouldn’t either. Unless you’re a journalist or activist who’s actually being targeted, it’s overkill. 99% of people don’t need that level of paranoia because no one cares enough to spy on them. I get doing it for fun or learning, but actually needing it? Not really.
>>
>>108499972
Stop needing that.
